WINTER 2021

Goodbye 2021 – Have you met anyone who is happy to see 2021 “go in the books” and at the same time wonder how 2022 will treat us? Not just 2021, but the last two years have not gone unnoticed for being tough on all of us. With the loss of loved ones, business and economic struggles, cabin fever, learning loss, and the negative impact on our social and psychological well-being, we are definitely in need of a change of pace. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t faced a challenge or two in their life. President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said “A smooth sea never made for a skilled sailor.” Sometimes the best things come from the worst situations. Who can disagree with that concept? Working our way through a challenge supports character development and personal growth. But what if the challenge is so overwhelming that you don’t know where to begin or you don’t have a support system to help you navigate the circumstances? Our mini-grant recipients and their programs are wonderful examples of community-based organizations that support children and youth as they face challenges daily or teach skills to help them avoid difficult challenges. Hello 2022 As we move into 2022, the Aaron Judge ALL RISE Foundation has plenty to be excited about.  Our first NYC Gala will be held on January 26 to introduce Aaron’s foundation to the community. Sponsorships are available starting at $10,000. Single Tickets will go on sale in early December. Go to aaronjudgeALLRISEfoundation.org for detailed information about the evening.  Our Leadership Webinar Series will begin its 2nd year with a strong cast of participants to address leadership in various environments.  New connections and collaborations are being developed to strengthen our reach and to develop our programs to a higher level.  The Mini-grant program will continue to identify and provide $2,500 grants to local organizations that support children and youth in unique and traditional ways.  AJARF will encourage adults to set aside valuable time, just five minutes, to “Have a Catch” with children which will create opportunities to develop and build positive relationships. Meeting Mason When you are a kid, you dream of being a Major League Baseball player. You think about standing in the batter’s box facing a Cy Young caliber pitcher. You imagine diving to field a ball for the 3rd out in the World Series. You hope that one day you will be mobbed by your teammates for driving in the winning run, as I was on the last day of this past season. As a kid, these are the things you imagine would be special. What you can’t imagine are all the other opportunities that come with playing baseball at the highest level. I had no idea what it would feel like to take the field at Yankee Stadium and hear the famous ‘roll call’ from the bleachers behind me − or how I would fill up with pride seeing someone wear a jersey with my name and number. It’s still surprising and humbling to me when a young fan says he wants to play like me. There are moments each day that I never would have expected, and yet they are all part of the connectedness I feel with fans around the country. This summer, I had a special opportunity I never imagined. I met Mason. You may have seen a video of Mason, opening baseball cards with his dad, a ritual they have taken part in since Mason’s first cancer diagnosis. In the video, the father-son duo took a moment to pray that the next pack would hold a special one-of-a-kind card. It did. The card was my 2021 Topps Diamond Icons 1-of-1 card. The two erupted in screams in the video and touched people around the world. As a kid, I am not sure I ever imagined there would be a baseball card with my picture on it, let alone a Topps Diamond Icons 1-of-1 card. I can’t find the words to share how touched I was to see the joy that card brought to a kid that has had such a tough fight. A fight, I am sure, he and his family never imagined. With the help of a lot of people, and some luck, the following week I was able to meet Mason and sign that card. While the card may have featured me, this meeting wasn’t about me. It was about Mason. Mason is the one that I would like to be like. He has battled back from cancer four times, and yet moves around with that contagious smile on his face. He is more than a survivor. Mason is a leader that shows the world how to tackle any problem - with grace, with warmth, and with grit. Unfortunately, my baseball season didn’t end like I would’ve wanted. Yet, I will get back to work, making sure I am ready to help the Yankees get all the way to the end of the playoffs next year! I will work hard, I will pray, and I will think of Mason. We need more Masons.

LEADERSHIP Webinars Continue to Engage Our 2021 Webinars are in the books, and in the process, we learned a lot about leadership! We kicked off the Leadership in the Clubhouse with Aaron and Zach Britton who shared their early experiences. Phil Boyte and Beth Houf – Leadership in the Classroom – taught us about looking at problems from a student’s point of view. Our next meeting – Leadership in the Boardroom – we heard that diversity comes in lots of formats, and we each need to open ourselves to people who think differently. Lastly, Leadership in Philanthropy brought together Amber Sabathia and Sharlee Jeter, members of our Yankee family, who shared lessons they have learned while leading their own non-profit organizations. Our 2022 Series is right around the corner and kicks off on February 1, with Leadership in the Clubhouse. Aaron and a special guest will take a look at how athletes can use social media to create positivity. Join us for our exciting 2022 webinars.

One of our recipients, Erin Mulligan (she/her/hers), is a 21-year-old expert on tailoring her social media environment to match her true self. She emphasizes the importance of following accounts that pertain to a person’s own interests to find like-minded people, and warns others, including her 13-year-old sister, not to get caught up in the inauthentic side of social media. She focuses on the joyful side of the platforms and makes a point to spread positivity by leaving uplifting messages as “you never know how much a simple comment can mean to someone.”

NEXT UP!

#ALLRISE2HELP is a joint campaign with AJARF and #ICANHELP, which encourages online users to spread positivity and use the internet responsibly. When spreading positivity and using the hashtag #ALLRISE2HELP on social media, a user can receive a special edition Power-Band bracelet! To date we have distributed bracelets to California, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Nevada, Kentucky and Pennsylvania.

Congratulations Mini-Grant Recipients! FRESNO POLICE CHAPLAINCY FRESNO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

SHELTERING ARMS CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES BRONX COUNTY, NEW YORK

This ALL RISE Mini-Grant will support the STEM Nova program, designed to encourage natural curiosity and sense of wonder by giving Scouts opportunities to participate in activities, such as robotics and aviation. The hands-on learning with real-world applications encourages development in a variety of areas, including 21st-century skills and STEM. These skills such as media literacy, communication, problem solving, and collaboration, ensure youth will thrive in a world that is constantly evolving. The BSA mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Partnering with Law enforcement, Fresno Police Chaplaincy strives to bring hope to the community through education mentorship, and counseling services. This ALL RISE Mini-Grant will support Project STEALTH, which was created to positively impact both youth and families by providing leadership development opportunities to help teens develop positive self-awareness. Boys and girls are paired with adult mentors who help them discover ways to handle anger, develop leadership skills, increase their self-awareness, and resolve conflicts. Lastly, Project STEALTH also takes students on field trips to expose them to different environments.

With an unwavering commitment for the past 200 years to foster a society where every child and family will have the opportunity to succeed and thrive, Sheltering Arms continue to work with the most challenged communities to offer a range of services. These include educational opportunities for economically disadvantaged children, casework services for homeless youth, and stigma-free mental health services in communitybased settings. This ALL RISE Mini-Grant will support ongoing mentoring and community service projects for at-risk youth in hopes of inspiring youth to become responsible citizens.
