ALL RISE for Gratitude As fall gives way to winter, temperatures drop,

leaves change to yellow and orange, eventually our trees will be bare. Then before we know it the temperature begins to rise, trees start to bud and give way to new foliage. As seasons come and go, I find myself pausing to reflect on days gone by and dreaming of tomorrow. One word keeps popping up in my mind: gratitude. Early in my teaching career, I discovered the great value of surrounding myself with mentors that were supportive, positive, and experienced. They stressed the importance of creating a positive classroom environment conducive for learning, gave me tips for handling challenges, and shared curriculum. Without this support, I’m not sure I would have been able to retire with nearly thirty years as a teacher and Director of Student Activities. With deep gratitude, I remember how these mentors sacrificed time, shared their expertise, and supported a young colleague. Frank, one of my leadership mentors, was a soft spoken, wise, and caring man. He shared a lesson with me that became an annual tradition in my classroom. Each December I would read “The Giving Tree” written by Shel Silverstein, to my Student Council and Leadership classes. This story, a parable about an apple tree and a boy, is sad yet comforting. The students would share their interpretation of the parable and we would discuss giving, receiving, gratefulness, friendship, and compassion. Each student was given a red apple ornament to show my

gratitude for each individual and their commitment to affect the culture and climate of their school in a positive way. Each day, ALL RISE Foundation pauses to appreciate the outpouring of support, words of encouragement, willingness to help, and donations. Our gratitude is heartfelt. We are thankful to have support from fans, friends, family, communities, small businesses, and corporations. Grateful for partners who have committed to sharing Aaron’s mission and contributing to our programs. All of the support we have received has inspired us to increase our reach. Research shows that there is a positive connection and correlation between gratitude and giving. It feels good to be grateful. Our gratitude continues to grow, along with our programs and initiatives. Expressing gratitude is more important than ever. This winter will be like no other we have experienced. Even as family, friends, and our communities have been negatively affected by an unprecedented COVID-19 crisis, we have the opportunity to focus on hope for better times and embrace a new normal. Grateful Just 48 hours after the loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, I was asked what I was grateful for. It took me a moment to answer, but after thinking about it, I realized that today I am, as always, grateful for the people in my life: My family and my friends. Most of you know I was adopted. My parents chose me, and I am truly blessed for that choice. As I have said before, I know I would not be a New York Yankee if it wasn’t for my mom. She taught me the difference from right and wrong, how to treat people and how to go the extra mile and put in extra work. She's molded me into the person that I am today. That helped me live to a higher standard, to make sure if I make plans, I stick to them. I had to finish my homework before I could play. Work comes first, and that lesson has stayed with me. Not everyone has someone teaching them those lessons, but those lessons make a huge difference. When you are watching professional athletes, you are watching people with elite abilities, but you rarely see how hard these athletes work to maintain and hone those abilities. The part you see is only a small part of the work they do for a living. No matter our circumstances, we have to do something every day to make ourselves better. That is my approach on and off the field, thanks to my family. When my career began in baseball, I knew if I was successful, I would start a foundation to help those who didn’t have the teachers I did. ALL RISE comes from that idea. Our team wants to provide the resources to help children and youth succeed, whether that is from providing leadership seminars, or funding kids working with 4H, snacks for boys and girls trying not to fall behind in school or learning leadership through First Tee. In this season of gratitude, I am grateful for my family, for the opportunities they gave me, and for opportunities this foundation is giving to other kids. With my mom, Patty Judge as President, guiding the ALL RISE team, I feel certain there are more kids that will have the chance to learn lessons that I did. We are continuing to grow our initiatives, so, please stay tuned for all that is coming in 2021. It is going to be a big year. ALL RISE!

OFF THE FIELD – IN THE COMMUNITY Aspiring Leaders Program

We are pleased to be the presenting sponsor of the 2020 Emergency Food Bank of Stockton / San Joaquin annual Run & Walk Against Hunger! This year, due to COVID-19, the event will be virtual, but the need for the support of the food bank is larger than ever. The Emergency Food Bank has seen a notable growth in demand for support from the community and this event helps the Food Bank continue to serve those in need throughout the year. During this season of Thanksgiving, we are especially grateful for organizations such as The Emergency Food Bank - and for the opportunity for us to give back to our community through this great community event!

Our Aspiring Leaders Program is designed to support youth and children to develop leadership skills which will enable them to reach unlimited possibilities and to become responsible citizens. Since May of 2019, our Aspiring Leaders Program has reached nearly 400 students in San Joaquin County, California. These students and advisors participated in leadership conferences presented by California Association of Directors of Activities. Due to the impact of COVID-19 on large gatherings, 23 students and 3 advisors recently participated in a virtual leadership conference. We are excited to announce that in 2021 our Aspiring Leaders Program will expand into Bronx County, New York and Fresno County, California. Since it is virtual this year, Aaron will miss the in-person run, which has been his family Thanksgiving tradition for nearly 10 years, but will participate virtually along with the community! Due to COVID-19 our communities are being hit hard. This compounds the pre-COVID community needs related to food insecurities, health, and nutrition. The Emergency Food Bank of Stockton offers a variety of programs that address these concerns. They provide food for the hungry to improve the health and well-being of San Joaquin County including children and youth, our most vulnerable.

An old fashioned term for a pitcher. In the early years, pitchers would often twirl their arms in a circle one or more times before delivering the ball, literally using a “windup”, in the belief it would reduce stress on their arms. The terms “twirler” and “twirling” faded along with that motion. The modern term “hurler” is effectively the substitute term. 3

RISING UP

First Tee Receives Mini-Grant First Tee of San Joaquin is the recipient of a $2,500 Mini Grant. The Mini-Grant will be used to provide underserved youth “Golferships” to participate in First Tee programs. Participants are taught golf basics related to grip, stance and swing. Volunteer coaches work in small groups to develop chipping, putting and full swings. The core values of First Tee - Respect, Courtesy, Responsibility, Honesty, Integrity, Confidence, Sportsmanship, Perseverance and Judgement - align nicely with the mission of the Aaron Judge ALL RISE Foundation.

Mini-Grant Award Program Expanding The ALL RISE Foundation Mini-Grants are awarded three times a year (Spring, Fall, Winter).
