Gearing up and Having Fun When I was a kid, about ten, my dad saw an ad in the paper for the Manteca Stealers, a youth travel team, that was holding tryouts. While I had been playing locally for a while, this sounded like a new opportunity to ‘up’ the competition. I thought it sounded like fun. When we arrived at the ballpark though, there were more kids than I had ever seen at a tryout, and I started to get really nervous. I looked at my dad and wondered aloud ‘what if I am not good enough?’ My dad reminded me that it was ok to just go and have fun and to try. You can’t know if you are good enough if you don’t give it a shot. I went out, joined the other kids on the field, and made the team. I ended up playing on that squad for four more years.

Years later, when I had my first invite to spring training, I walked into the New York Yankee clubhouse and for the first time really felt like a Yankee. There was Alex Rodriguez and Brett Gardner in this place with so much history. I once again had that feeling that this was bigger than anything I had experienced before. It didn’t occur to me that I would be sent back to the minor league side in two weeks, no matter what I did on the field. Those two weeks gave me a taste for what I was working for, and I am reminded of that each time I report for spring training.

As I gear up for the 2022 season, my approach has to be the same as it has been in years past. I can’t control the pandemic, or even the lock-out, all I can control is how I get ready for the season, and it doesn’t matter when that comes. I can control the work I put in and my attitude when I step into the clubhouse and onto the field.

At the end of a season, I set up my work-out calendar for the winter. I review everything that went well and not so well, and I determine what I need to do to feel ready so I can be confident when I step into that clubhouse in the spring. These workouts are tough but having them set for the winter pushes me to make sure I complete my reps every single day. This mirrors my in-season life by setting up “game-time” where I can focus on my work, just like everyone else. I don’t know what the 2022 season has in-store. All I know is that I will be showing up with my teammates, ready to chase that ring.

LEADERSHIP On Feb. 1, we kicked off our second season of Leadership webinars with Aaron and his guest Blake Snell giving insight into how they stay focused and ride the waves of a long season and work to stay positive. This year our leaders aren’t just focused on success in the traditional way of looking at things, but also in making the world a better place for all. As we grow this series, we are finding that more and more kids are joining in to learn about leadership in many forms. “It isn’t enough for me to be a good athlete, if I’m not also finding ways to give back,” says our founder, Aaron Judge. Our guests in this series are sharing how they are working to shape their surrounding communities. Michael Crooke, Avamore Professor of Practice at University of Oregon and former CEO of Patagonia, and Lisa Friedman of Tall Order are two leaders that see giving back as good business. They join us in May for Leadership in the Boardroom. 2022 also sees the addition of a new topic, Leadership in the Digital World coming March 23rd, and features some young leaders with Olivia Van Ledtje, of LivBits, Kristy Drutman of Browngirl Green, Matt Soeth, Head of Community at Spectrum Labs AI, Founding member of the Trust and Safety Collective. Kid’s Day is celebrating its 35th anniversary. A timehonored tradition, Kid’s Day inspires thousands of central valley residents to support patients and families treated at Valley Children’s Hospital, Madera, California. AJARF Founder Aaron Judge is proud to be part of this annual event.

RISING UP Congratulations Mini-Grant Recipients! Giving Opportunities to Kids (GOT Kids), San Joaquin County, California provides opportunities beyond the classroom experience to help children explore and develop their talents, interests, and skills. GOT Kids has been serving Lodi and Stockton students since 2012 through anti-bullying programs, STEM and visual arts field trips, early literacy campaigns, and providing essential school supplies and clothing for students in need. This grant will help fund their annual three-day science camp where students will participate in a service project and receive science, kayaking, and fly-fishing lessons. Valley Children's Healthcare, Fresno County, California provides high-quality, comprehensive healthcare services to children. The Laval Angel Fund has supported more than 800 families in the last six years by easing burdens that occur during their child’s medical treatment through financial and emotional support. This grant will help ease some of the financial challenges that families face with increased expenses associated with their child’s stay. The availability of this support allows families to focus on the health and welfare of their child. This mini-grant made possible with the support of Provident Payments, Inc. and the Gregg Raymundo Family. First Tech Fund, Inc, Bronx County, New York was founded in May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has amplified the pre-existing inequalities in technology access and education across America. First Tech Fund created a year-long fellowship experience for 52 students that provided each student with a laptop, unlimited Internet access, a mentor from an industry they expressed interest in, access to monthly virtual programming that teaches them life-long skills, such as public speaking and financial literacy, and internships. This grant will support Bronx students with unlimited internet and devices for a minimum of a year. This mini-grant made possible with the support of Glu Mobile.
