The March 2020 cover features the Reverend Canon Lisa Barnett at St Mary’s Church in Causeway, Horsham There’s a hint of “please don’t put me on the cover” behind Lisa’s smile, but seeing as the Parish Church has waited nearly 800 years for its first female vicar, it felt like the right choice! Toby placed a studio light along the aisle, using the stunning east window as a backdrop. Ben was wandering around, so had to hide behind the organ for the shot. New Housing? Not In My Back Yard! I like the acronym NIMBY. People tend to distance themselves from the term, like it’s the planning equivalent of shopping at Poundland. “I am not a NIMBY! While it’s true that my house would overlook the development in question, my reason for objecting is that I’m genuinely concerned about the newts!” But we shouldn’t be insulted by the label. In fact, I myself am a NIMBY when it comes to the Local Plan. I live in Ashington, where 600 new homes could be built. Hopefully, residents who have studied the proposals in depth will present arguments as to why this is unfeasible, perhaps citing infrastructure, traffic, noise pollution or environmental concerns. My thought process though is purely emotive. I just don’t want more bloody houses. Not in my back yard. I love walking my dog in the tranquil woods and fields around the village. I love seeing children out riding their bikes and scooters. I love going to the village shop and being held up by a neighbour whose fence has blown down in the storm. Village communities like this should be protected, as that is the lifestyle we have sought. Quite frankly, I don’t want my village to go down the same road as Southwater. If I were still living in Horsham, I would have equally passionate reasons for objecting to further development around the town. Perhaps I love popping to the Carfax for a foamy latte with friends and telling them all how my child’s reading age is off the chart. Maybe I love coming home to a safe place to live after a tough commute to the city. Quite frankly, I don’t want my town to go down the same road as Crawley. At the opposite end of the scale, if I was living in a truly rural community, I would be eager to protect my way of life. I might love the daily
sight of buzzards perched on my gatepost, or looking out at views that are exactly as I remember as a child. Perhaps I love popping to the pub for a pint of bitter and chatting to a farmer who spent the day trying to repair his 1967 Massey Ferguson tractor. Quite frankly, I don’t want my hamlet to go down the same road as Ashington. Something has to give. Horsham District Council has produced a draft Local Plan, setting out where new houses will be built over the next 17 years, in order to meet the demands set by the government. There’s a public consultation underway, which lasts until the end of March. After it considers the responses, a final version of the Local Plan will be produced by HDC. Whatever decisions is takes, the Council will not be popular. Firstly, questions are being asked about where the housing projections come from in the first place. Questions like ‘why is the government aiming for 300,000 new homes per year when it’s trying to reduce net migration to 100,000 a year?’ And ‘why is the south east bearing the brunt of new homes when the government has vowed to invest heavily in the north?’ In an article in The Telegraph, the Director of Consulting at Oxford Economics and a former Treasury economist said the housing projection was “way over the top.” Meanwhile, one Conservative MP, Anne Marie Morris, has written in a newspaper column that the formula for working out the number of houses in Local Plans was “flawed.” Perhaps Horsham District Council will be tempted to be vague in its initial commitment, in the hope that the figures are soon revised. However, that could be a dangerous game to play with the government putting pressure on councils who don’t meet housing demands. So, HDC is between and a rock and a hard place.
It can be difficult for the public to know what exactly is going on with regards to housing in Horsham, and the local media is partly to blame. We can present the impression that we’re being bombarded with developments in every corner of the District. For example, when a developer first proposes 2,500 new homes, it will be front page news. A few months later, it’s a big story again when the planning application is submitted, then there’s more coverage when it’s debated and voted on by the planning committee at Horsham District Council. There might even be another article when that committee’s decision is agreed by the Full Council a few weeks later. And - as in the case of the Horsham incinerator - yet more headlines when all previous decisions are overturned by an independent Planning Inspector! The following headlines could easily appear over a two-year period in relation to the same site: New proposals for 2,500 Homes on Greenfield Land Plans Submitted for 2,500 Homes on Greenfield Land Council Officers Recommend Approval for 2,500 New Homes on Greenfield Land Councillors Reject Plans for 2,500 Homes on Greenfield Land Planning Inspector Gives Green Light to 2,500 New Homes on Greenfield Land. So, bear in mind that when you see these headlines, they’re often related to the same sites, be it North Horsham, Adversane, Broadbridge Heath or Billingshurst. But the overall effect they have can leave you with the impression that developers are steam-rolling over our land and there’s nothing you can do about it. You can though, and the little corner of the planet you call home is worth fighting for. So, go on. Be a NIMBY!

Everybody Flies, the latest documentary by Horsham-based Fact Not Fiction Films, was due to screen for seven consecutive days at the town’s Everyman cinema from 28 February. Everybody Flies is a personal project by the production company’s founder, Tristan Loraine. Former airline captain Tristan uncovers facts about the air we breathe on commercial aircraft and reveals how cabin air may contain dangerous toxins. West Sussex County Council has revealed plans for a £21million fire service learning and development centre and 24-hour fire station development on land at Highwood Mill, Horsham. The station will incorporate all the best practice around firefighters’ health and wellbeing, as well as a learning and development centre with residential accommodation. A public exhibition showcasing the plans is held at Horsham Library from 4 - 11 March. Drop-in sessions will be held on Thursday 5 March at 4 - 7pm and Saturday 7 March at 9am - 12pm. A planning application will be submitted in the spring.

After an absence of over 400 years, the beaver is coming back to Sussex, with two pairs being introduced at the rewilding project on the Knepp Estate, West Grinstead. The Sussex Beaver Trial, a partnership led by Sussex Wildlife Trust, will see the beavers released in Knepp’s Southern Block in late spring or in the autumn. They will have access to 250 hectares of land, including extensive swathes of willow, available to

Horsham town centre will host a Passion Play on Good Friday 10 April, at 12pm and 3.15pm. Wintershall Events has performed The Passion of Jesus in Trafalgar Square on Good Friday since 2010, attracting over 20,000 visitors. This year, Passion Plays will also be held in selected other locations, including the Carfax. The Horsham Passion Play will be a full-scale re-enactment of
the Passion, featuring a moving crucifixion and resurrection. The Christian message embraces all denominations but is also for those of different faiths or none. Educational and historical, it is an opportunity to tell the real story of Easter. The production is a community effort, with contributions from churches and Horsham District Council. Costumes and props are being made by volunteers
and partners including Horsham Men in Sheds. On Good Friday, the event starts at 10.30am with the town hosting marching Roman soldiers and the Big Church Day Out providing music on Carfax Bandstand. The 2019 Midnight Walk
The St Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk will be held on Saturday 6 June. The walk starts at The Bridge Leisure Centre in Broadbridge Heath with 20, 13, seven and two-mile family-friendly routes available. Last year, around 1,000 people took part to help St Catherine’s support more local terminally ill people and their families, with many walking in memory of a loved one. Gemma Morris of Southwater will be taking part in the Marathon Des Sables, the toughest foot race on Earth, on Friday 3 April. The race will see Gemma running 251km over six days in the beautiful but unforgiving terrain of the Sahara. Gemma has run the London marathon three times, as well as similar races in New York, Chicago and Berlin. Last August, she completed the 100km South Coast Ultra Challenge. Gemma is raising money for the Anthony Nolan charity in memory of her dad, Sid Challacombe, who lost his battle with cancer in 2005. After completing her biggest challenge to date, Gemma hopes to volunteer for the charity too. Residents are encouraged to have their say on the draft Local Plan, with a public consultation running until 30 March. magazine). The government requires all local authorities to build new homes in the coming years and the Horsham District will be under pressure to provide thousands. Developers have already put forward proposals for significant new housing projects in West Grinstead, Southwater, Adversane, Henfield and Billingshurst, as well as a new neighbourhood at Ifield. The
Council needs to decide which of these to proceed with, considering infrastructure, transport links and opportunities for jobs. HDC hopes to have a Local Plan ready for adoption in 2021. The Draft Local Plan is online at www.horsham.gov.uk/ localplanreview. A summary exhibition can be viewed at Horsham Library from 6 - 30 March. Responses must be returned by 30 March.
Southwater Parish Council’s own Neighbourhood Plan proposes to allow over 400 new houses. However, Keep Southwater Green - a campaign group opposing further development in the village - fears that as many as 1,200 houses could potentially be included in Horsham District Council’s Local Plan, which is now subject to review and public consultation (see above). On 28 February, a public hearing was due to be held in the village. It was ordered by the Independent Examiner of the Parish Council's proposed Neighbourhood Plan to ensure a proper examination of
the issues raised. The draft Neighbourhood Plan for Southwater proposes up to 450 new houses to be built on land used by Great House Farm. The land is owned by the Aubrey Fletcher Trust, although the farm has been run by tenant farmers from the same family for several generations. There are fears that as well as the loss of the farm and its grade II listed farmhouse, any new homes would pave the way for another 1200 homes that have been proposed by Berkeley Homes Ltd. www.facebook.com/ keepsouthwatergreen

Billingshurst Tennis Club was named Club of the Year at the annual Tennis Sussex awards at the Amex Stadium, Brighton, on 2 February. Club Chairman Richard Cordy received the award from Lesley Bull, Marketing Manager at RT Williams Insurance Brokers, who sponsored the event. Britaniacrest Recycling’s plans to build a recycling, recovery and renewable energy centre on land off Langhurstwood Road, Warnham, have been approved by a Planning Inspector. The proposals were initially rejected by West Sussex County Council and have faced strong criticism from campaign group, No Incinerator 4 Horsham (NI4H). However, in reviewing the bid, the Inspector has decided that
the facility for burn tonnes of rubbish that cannot be recycled, can go ahead. Chris Foss, director of Britaniacrest Recycling, said: “We’re delighted with the decision. The fact remains that there’s an urgent need in West Sussex and across the south for new waste infrastructure. The alternative is for more UK-based landfill sites, which is the least sustainable option for managing

Dead Ringers impersonator James Hurn stars in a homage to popular comedy show The Navy Lark, coming to the Capitol on Friday 8 May, 7.30pm. The Navy Lark sees James Hurn, Richard Usher and Mark Earby bring to life three classic episodes from the much-loved radio series, which ran for 1959 - 1977 and originally featured Leslie Phillips, Dennis Price, Ronnie Barker and Jon Pertwee. Horsham Matters Community Meals at held every month at St Andrew’s Church and the Christian Life Centre in Horsham. A group of National Citizen Service (NCS) teenagers have raised funds for an Opti Aura sensory projector for Maxwell Smith, six, from Pulborough. Led by Brinsbury College student Hollie Cheesman, the group completed the NCS programme last summer, organising social action projects including a music performance to raise almost £400. Maxwell has mitochondrial Tk2d, a rare genetic disorder which causes progressive weakness of his muscles. The light projector has been installed at his home and Maxwell’s father says that it is now an important part of Maxwell’s day.

The Kings Head in Billingshurst has been named TEA Drinkers’ Pub of the Year, in a competition run by Surrey brewery Hogs Back. The Hogs Back’s ‘Support Your Local, Go TEA Total’ campaign encouraged people to support their local pub during January, the quietest month of the year for the trade when the bestselling beer is Traditional English Ale (TEA). More than 220 pubs took part, displaying TEA Total posters and beer mats, with more than 130,000 people engaging with the campaign on social media. The King’s Head has been owned for the past six years by Oonagh and Colin Ganley.

The Drill Hall in Denne Road, Horsham, has been given a temporary reprieve. Earlier this year, the Council revealed plans to close the hall, feeling that it no longer met the needs of the community. However, its idea to turn the site into affordable homes while building a new community facility at Berkeley’s Highwood estate was not met with unanimous public approval. An online petition to save the hall attracted 5,800 signatures. In response, the Council has announced that the Drill Hall will continue unchanged for two years, as it assesses current and future provision of facilities. HDC says that £1million is required to bring the facility in line with modern standards. Hit the Downs MTB, an off-road cycling event, returns on Sunday 3 May with a new route on the South Downs. It starts at Adur Recreational Ground in Shoreham-by-Sea and riders can choose from 30km, 60km or 80km distances on a course that includes climbs and descents. The event raises money for St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House. On Christmas Eve 2019, I hit 60, never imagining that this birthday would come so quick. Only yesterday, I was at Knebworth enjoying Pink Floyd under the stars, watching Z-Cars and eating Spangles. I am Lydia Sanderson and last year I decided to hand over the reins at The Art Academy to a brilliant young woman, Lorna Beard. I vowed to spend the rest of my working life focusing on the things I love, as well as starting something new. Teaching art, developing my photography skills, painting and writing were essential ingredients. But what new venture did I want to embark on? Well, I wanted to learn to ride a motorbike! After contacting MTS Sussex, a motorcycle training school in Burgess Hill (www.mtssussex.co.uk), I spent a wonderful day completing a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course. I then acquired a little Yamaha 125, clocking up 900 miles in five months, having a glorious time zooming round West Sussex. Learning to ride a motorbike is nothing like riding a moped or anything else. It feels like riding a well-schooled stallion! It’s a challenge and involves skills which take time to develop, but

is one of the most rewarding experiences imaginable. On Sundays, I would spend hours riding in a ‘figure of 8’ at Tesco’s car park and slalom around rows of cones, before heading across the countryside and along the coast. The sights, smells (blossom, the sea, fish and chips!) and the feeling of freedom were truly awesome. During my training and at my many café stops, I met some of the friendliest, most helpful people of my life. After six months’ practice and having passed the Theory test, I returned to MTS Sussex and had a wonderful time completing the full training. I passed the Module 1 and 2 tests, gaining a full licence. They taught me with professionalism, always putting safety first and the instructors made my journey tremendous fun.
Many of my friends and family were full of doom and gloom when I mentioned motorcycling, sometimes recalling accidents and injuries. However, times have changed and gaining a motorcycle licence now bears no resemblance to the short tests of old. It is extremely difficult and requires an immense amount of courage and hard work which leads to a more confident, skilful and safer rider. Modern equipment and clothing is heavily protective and has the added bonus of being stylish, and there’s nothing like a good chat in a motorbike shop!

A NEW DA AFTER NEARLY 800 YEARS, HORSHAM HAS A FEMALE VICAR The Reverend Canon Lisa Barnett has become the first female vicar of Horsham, following her appointment as Team Rector of St Mary’s Church. Mother-of-three Lisa’s appointment was confirmed by the Bishop of Chichester, Dr. Martin Warner, during a licensing service at St Mary’s on Thursday 6 February. Rev Barnett replaces Guy Bridgewater, who left the
parish in late 2018 to take up a new post at Bath Abbey. St Mary's Church was built during the Norman period and small sections of the original building can still be seen in the tower, the west door and the north-west wall. However, the church we know today was built and dedicated to St Mary the Virgin in about 1247. The first known vicar of Horsham, Robert of Wallingford, was appointed in 1231 and nearly
eight centuries later, a female takes on the role. We met Lisa to discuss the challenge… You come to Horsham from a comparatively small church? After my ordination, I served as vicar of St Augustine’s Church in Scaynes Hill near Haywards Heath for eight years. It was a half-time post, as that's what I wanted after having children. It’s a lovely church that could fit into St Mary’s many times over.
Why did you move? My twins Amy and Cara are seven-years-old and my youngest, Ross, starts school this September. So, my husband Stephen and I felt it was a good time to move. People have told me that Horsham is an amazing place to raise a family, and although there was sadness about uprooting them, after eight years at Scaynes Hills, the timing felt right and I knew that Horsham was vacant.

AWN Did you know much about St Mary’s? As a Worthing girl, I knew a bit about the church, although the first time I came here I was quite overwhelmed. A couple of people had remarked over the years that I would be a good fit for Horsham or that they could imagine me at St Mary’s. I suppose that sows a seed...
Is there a formal process when applying for such a post? In Easter 2019, I told the Archdeacon that I would like to throw my hat into the ring. There is
a formal application process within the Church of England and I was one of three applicants. I was offered the position at the end of September, but wanted to stay in Scaynes Hill for Christmas. I felt it was important to finish well before embarking on a new adventure! My old congregation have been very loving. They previously supported me when I was the first priest in the diocese to take maternity leave and many came to my induction at St Mary’s.

You are the first female vicar of Horsham. Is that a big deal? Women were first ordained as priests just over 25 years ago and have been becoming vicars ever since, but it's fair to say that in this diocese we’ve been a bit slower to catch on. Consequently, the Bishop has been pro-active in supporting women and providing more opportunities to redress the balance. Still ,only about 14% of vicars are women and it's fair to say that nationally there are not as many women leading bigger churches. The church has been exploring the underlying issues behind that and we need to encourage women to put themselves forward. How did you feel when women were allowed to be ordained as bishops in 2014? It was wonderful, as there was quite a wait for it (the Church of England had previously voted against women bishops in 2012). Some with a more Anglo Catholic view argue that the Catholic Church is not ordaining women, so we shouldn't be doing it in the Church of England. Others look to the Bible for reasons why women shouldn’t be leading churches.
Then there are those who argue that we need to move in front of the Catholic Church on the issue and that the Bible needs to be interpreted carefully. You now encourage other women to be ordained... For a long time, I’ve been part of a team mentoring and supporting women considering becoming vicars. In my final year at Scaynes Hill, I went full-time by adding another vocational role as one of the Deputy Diocesan Directors of Ordinands (DDDO). I’ve stepped back to Assistant DDO but it's lovely to work with young women. We need and value role models and I'm aware that I have become an accidental role model just by showing people that you can be a vicar and a mother. People say, ‘you're a breath of fresh air.’ I think what they mean is that by being younger and female, you are different. Just through that, you influence others. You’ll be leading not one but three of the town churches… As Team Rector, I’ll support St Leonard’s Church (Cambridge Road) and Holy Trinity (Rushams Road). One of the things that I'm

conscious of is the need for us to work together. In the short-term, the clergy and lay readers will move across all three churches. When Guy (Bridgewater) was the vicar, his vision was for the churches to work independently and perhaps with five churches - which was the case at the time - that was necessary. Now there are only three churches, there is a need to snuggle in and explore a shared vision. Any other changes planned? Initially my role will involve a lot of listening. I don't want to meddle with things that are working well. You should let people get on with their roles and focus on elements that aren't working well. For me, it's a matter of getting to know people, as there are four services every Sunday and an astonishing number of volunteers and staff doing all sorts of things. It’s quite daunting! Do you have a vision for how you’d like the church to be? One of the church's unique selling points is that it’s a community of all ages and of diversity, which it should be. If a church is monochrome in its ethnic background, age of the congregation, or anything at all, it becomes a club for similar people. A church should be a diverse community where people looking in think, ‘What on Earth is keeping them together?’ What is keeping them together is their faith in Christ. Jamie Ampleford resisted the pressure to explore more contemporary forms whilst studying Fine Art. Instead, he paints and draws his own way, with a focus on achieving a perfect likeness in his portraits. Now, with a growing portfolio of work in an impressive array of materials, from graphite pencils to charcoal to acrylics, the Ashington artist is preparing to exhibit for the first time. Here, Jamie describes the journey in his own words…
FOOTBALL HEROES When I was young, I would draw caricatures of my favourite footballers, like Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho. Even then, the challenge of achieving a good likeness was the most important thing to me. Some people argue that it's about capturing
the character of a subject, but likeness is the key for me. Football and art have always been my two passions. I played for Ashington Cougars until joining Brighton and Hove Albion when I was 12. I was with the club’s Academy for four years until I was released. I was gutted and was considering my options when a friend suggested a football scholarship in America. So, after Sixth Form at Steyning Grammar School, I went to Prescott College near Phoenix, Arizona. Much of Jamie’s output focuses on stars of stage and screen
In the morning, I attended lectures and classes, whilst the afternoon was dedicated to training, with matches played two or three times a week. It was intense, as we were aiming for the National play-offs. In terms of my art development, the experience was very interesting. The course taught me about the relationship between colours, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in Hot Fuzz

which I hadn’t been aware of. I also learnt many technical elements that inform what I create today. I came home and then spent four years studying art at Reading University. It could be frustrating, as they tended to focus on contemporary art. We would study artists who might have exhibited a urinal at a gallery and I struggled to see anything amazing in that. They would try to turn you into a different artist, but I didn’t want that. I like it when you look at a piece of art and appreciate the skill and talent behind it. Dumbing down to please others didn’t interest me.
DRAWING LEGENDS Most of my improvement has come simply through experience of drawing and painting and I love working with different materials.

I use acrylics, ball point pens and even charcoal. However, working with graphite pencils is something I've done throughout my life and still enjoy. It's easy to grab a sheet of paper and do it, without the need for a big set-up. With portrait paintings, I still aim to achieve a good likeness, but they can be more impressionistic. With pencils, you can go into greater detail and I’m always exploring to find new ways to do that. Looking back at past work, I can see a big development and improvement in my skill levels, which motivates me to do more. Much of my output is focused on legends of music and film. Even a small drawing can take 20 hours, so I listen to a lot of music while working. There isn’t a genre that I love above all others, so I’ll often be listening to an artist and think about drawing them, be it David

Bowie, Bob Marley or Prince. I love gangster and crime films too, so I painted scenes or characters from Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Peaky Blinders and I’m currently working on The Godfather. However, the picture that took me the longest was a small scene of Carnaby Street in London. Occasionally, I incorporate words too. I recently painted The Joker and that included writing. Often, I play around with the composition on Adobe Photoshop to give me an idea of how it will look and
whether words enhance or detract from the work. When I’m unsure, I ask my parents! Whilst painting The Joker, I filmed myself on my mobile phone. I entered a competition which required me submit the art with a photo and time-lapse video. It was my first attempt at using timelapse technology and it wasn't the best quality, but people found it fascinating. I invested in better equipment and now record most of my projects. This idea has helped me build a following on social media, where videos tend to attract more views than photos. I think time-lapse gives people an appreciation of just how long it takes to complete one of these pictures. Jamie is building a portfolio of his work, from sketches to canvas paintings

Whilst I love painting icons, many of the commissions I receive are pet portraits. Also, I was recently asked to paint a jumbo jet taking off from Gatwick Airport as a present for someone retiring from the aviation industry. I composed the image in Photoshop first before the final design was approved, so it’s useful to have that technology available. My aim is to build up a portfolio and make a career as an artist. I recently joined Horsham Artist Open Studios (HAOS) and will be involved in the group’s Art Trail later this year, as well as the Steyning Art Trail. Before then, I’ll be attending the Sussex Art Fair at Goodwood. That will be the first

“Time-lapse videos give people an appreciation of just how long it takes.” time my work has been exhibited publicly, as since finishing university, all my commissions have come through social media or from family and friends. It'll be interesting to gauge the reaction of the public, as seeing work up close is very different to seeing it on a computer screen. All artists go through phases. At Sixth Form, I created a large abstract portrait inspired by graffiti art. That’s something that I’ll probably revisit, as art takes you down different routes.

The Horsham Video Production Firm that Formed a Film Festival
The Horsham Film Festival was held for the second successive year at The Capitol Theatre in February. The festival is organised by production company Silvertip Films, which produces corporate video, event coverage and promotional content for clients both locally and further afield. AAH meets Director Geoff Cockwill and Corporate Video Producer Mike Watts to find out more about the business and the film festival…
Starting Out Geoff founded Silvertip Films in 2005, adopting the name he had used while shooting several low budget short films after university. These included Attack of the Lobstermen from Mars, a homage to B-movie monster films, which Geoff wrote and made with a friend.
WHAT’S ON AT THE CAPITOL
Initially based in Cranleigh, much of the early professional output revolved around live music, with films focused on a tribute act and a girl band leading to similar commissions. The business moved to Godalming and later Horsham, evolving to include corporate and video marketing content. “Much of our professional work now is promotional videos,” says Mike. “There’s a wide remit, as it might include interviews with company directors, customer testimonials and case studies, product and venue promotions or even safety videos. Most are produced for websites or digital advertising.” Silvertip Films has - on several occasions - partnered with Horsham District Council to capture the atmosphere at popular events, including Piazza Italia and AmeriCARna. www.thecapitolhorsham.com

With experience, you learn ways to tell a story, develop interview techniques and various ideas for getting a message across. A phone might give you good images, but that doesn't mean you can craft a good video.”

Film Festival Geoff has dreamed of forming a film festival for many years and it was the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 that presented a chance to make it happen. With their application for a YoC grant approved, Silvertip drummed up interest, initially fearing they might struggle to attract submissions. But the entries flooded in, allowing them to present awards in several categories. After the success of the inaugural awards in 2019, it was natural to stage a second event. “It was intended to be a one-off,” says Geoff. “But we had so much support beyond our partnership with Horsham District Council that the festival took on a life of its own. We had strong backing from sponsors and media support from The District Post too, while General Manager Nick Mowat and all of his team at The Capitol have been fantastic. “If we were driving it on alone, the festival wouldn’t have happened this year. As it transpires, many people are enthusiastic about independent film and willing to help rising talent.

“When judging, we appreciate that some elements might not be as good as others,” says Mike. “Often the sound is poor, particularly if it has outdoor scenes. We know that, as we face the same issues and overcoming them is part of the learning process. But we don’t ignore somebody just because they don’t have access to good sound or camera equipment. Our focus is on the story, as you can achieve an emotional response whether shooting with the latest equipment or a VHS recorder.” Silvertip Films also recommend that up-and-coming directors make happier productions. “A lot of independent films are dark and tend to end on a depressing note,” says Geoff. “Perhaps it's an attempt to be taken seriously, but it’s important to remember that people go to the cinema to escape from real life and be entertained. That’s what film is about.”

OVER 18 BEST DRAMA This is ME (Josh Pickup) This was Josh’s first film, yet he created a well-written, metaphorical piece that was very polished. It had emotion with a strong turn from the lead actress and reflected well the struggles of ME sufferers. We liked that it ended on an optimistic note!
BEST ANIMATION GRIT (Matt Thomas) This was a great action short, filmed in stop-motion effect. It featured block monsters smashing through walls and sliding down rails and took six months to make. It was exciting and immediately drew our attention. The effects were so impressive that we initially thought it was rendered with CG.

BEST COMEDY Quiet Carriage (Ben S. Hyland) This was a clever production. It starts with a scene on a quiet carriage, with a woman on her mobile phone and a man sat nearby, agitated by her. The story follows the two characters through their life together and she’s always on her phone. There is something about it that we can all relate to, and there's a great twist!
YOUR DISTRICT AWARD The Super Fan & Me (Mark Jende and Lewis Harper) This is a documentary about an obsessive Doctor Who fan. He has left his wife and kids behind and moved to Horsham, the sole
reason being it was the home town of original Daleks designer, Ray Cusick. He embarks on a campaign for a 300-foot concrete Dalek statue to be built on Denne Hill. As a Doctor Who fan, I found it funny, but everyone else laughed too, so it transcended the source material.

One of the most popular winners at the Horsham Film Festival was Jake Payne in the Under-18s Award. His ambitious yet tragic story, The Last Battle, follows a unit of British soldiers as they come up against German divisions at Normandy. Jake was only 12-years-old when he directed his friends, neighbours and even younger brother Elliott. We met the young cast after the awards night and spoke to Jake about his exciting, emotional short film...
Was this your first attempt at a movie? I have previously made films that were only two minutes long, shot on my phone and edited with iMovie. They were also war films, shot around the corner from my house, where there’s a ditch that can be made to look like a trench. What is it that you like so much about war films? I've grown up watching them as my dad is a fan. My favourite is Saving Private Ryan. The Last Battle is about British soldiers who landed on Gold Beach on D-Day in 1944. The men get separated from their unit and must navigate their way back, but along the way they run into
German divisions. I knew about Gold Beach from another war movie, The Longest Day. It doesn’t end well for the heroes in the film though... I wanted a mix of action and human emotion, as that’s what defines a good war film. You need gore, but there needs to be a touch of humanity too. None of the British soldiers survive as I wanted it to be realistic. In those early waves of attacks, our men were likely to die as they were horribly outnumbered. So, it’s a story about the fallen.

“This was the first time we have entered anything at a festival and I didn't believe we could win.” The film is well shot. What equipment did you use? My dad is a cameraman and fortunately he has access to good equipment. I came up with the ideas and told him what I wanted to happen and the job of the cameraman is to find the best way to film it. So, I was in charge! He just stood there and pressed record!

What was the hardest part? We shot it on the two hottest days of the year. The heat meant we were getting tired and stressed out, so I had to cut a lot of the script or it was going to be too much for everyone. The editing process also took time. It was three months before the final cut was ready. Where did you find the uniforms? We live near Capel and every year there’s a military show in the village. I went with my dad to look for army uniforms and found a man practically giving them away. We had already established a ‘Go Fund Me’ page and through that we raised about £150. Friends and family contributed too, boosting the budget to £200, meaning we could buy costumes and toy guns for the entire cast. It must have been fun for you all? For quite a few of the cast, it was their first acting experience. Jude wants to be an actor one day and Tom is already a member of Stagecoach. We also had Elliott, Jack, Cam, Keegan, Ollie, Charlie and Nick. Some are involved in the

documentary I’m now putting together about the Americans landing at Anzio as they tried to take back Rome during the war. There was a film made about it in 1968. And what is your next project? It’ll be a horror about a clown called Jester. Cam is going to play the central character, with Jude playing the clown. Hopefully, we can enter next year’s Horsham Film Festival too and claim back-to-back wins!

THE HORSHAM CHARITY THAT RECOGNISES YOUNG TALENT
Outstanding young sportsmen and women were recognised at the annual Set4Success awards, held at Christ’s Hospital School on 31 January. Twenty-four applicants representing sports ranging from football, netball and hockey to baseball, karate and motocross received a Set4Success award, which includes a financial contribution towards coaching and expenses, as well as free use of fitness facilities, courtesy of Places Leisure. Set4Success is a charitable organisation, created by the Rotary Club of Horsham in 2010 and run in partnership with representatives of Horsham District Council, local schools, businesses and sports and leisure providers. To be eligible for an award, candidates must be aged 11 - 18, live or attend school in
the district and be competing at a high level. To date, S4S has supported more than 200 people, with previous winners including hockey player Lucy Wood (a Commonwealth Games silver medallist) and golfer Marco Penge, now playing on the PGA EuroPro Tour. This year’s recipients are Fynn Talley (football), Gavin Cherubini and Ace White (Muay Thai), Andrew Harrison (badminton), Esme King (motocross), Jodie Cherubini (Brazilian jiu jitsu), Madeline Giller (netball), Isabella Hayes (triathlon), Cecily Turner (water polo), Charlie Denton (karate), Emily Oliver (pentathlon), Alex Richer (cross country/ athletics), Mame Sow (athletics), Leo Walker (shot put/discus), Anna Sayers and Millie Weeden (swimming), Siena Keijasers (hockey), Cameron Weir and
Albert Maskell (frisbee), Ranjuo Tomblin and LeAnne Tomblin (synchronised swimming), Maddy Barnes (shooting) and Louis Dean (baseball). Set4Success also presents an award for Outstanding Achievement, sponsored by Christ’s Hospital School. This year’s recipient is Fynn Talley, currently on a two-year apprenticeship at Brighton and Hove Albion FC. The goalkeeper has represented England at junior level. Fynn was away with his club, so his parents attended the on his behalf. Hosting the ceremony, S4S Committee Member Mike Sutton paid tribute to the charity’s founder, John Le Rossignol. John used his extensive local network to mobilise businesses, schools, clubs and Horsham District Council as he organised the first

ceremony in 2011. That year, S4S gave out eight awards, but one year later, that number had risen to 19 thanks partly to the effect of the London Olympic Games. Mr Sutton said: “John was a big man with a big heart. We would not be sitting here without him and the 140 previous award winners would not have been recognised without his vision. One week before John passed away, last year's Outstanding Achievement winner, Emily Orman, signed her first professional contract with Chelsea, which is John's team. I can't think of a more fitting way to represent his legacy to Set4Success.”

INSPIRING TALK Further motivation was provided by guest speaker and Set4Success patron Mike Goody. As a teenager, Mike was a talented swimmer, competing at a national level until he pursued a career in the Armed Forces. While serving in Afghanistan in 2008, Mike was struck by a roadside bomb and he ultimately lost a leg. He struggled to cope mentally, suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, his love of swimming helped him turn his life around.

It Pays to Plan When Seeking a Mortgage Getting a mortgage when you are self-employed is not the issue some people are led to believe. Lenders are quite happy to lend to those who are self-employed and have a good track record. The majority of lenders require two years accounts and will tend to average your last two years figures. However, there are also some lenders who will look to assist you even if you are in your first year. Some will also consider just last year’s figures, even if you have been self-employed for longer. Generally, the longer you’ve been self-employed and the more years accounts you have, the larger number of lenders you will have who are willing to assist. Some lenders do not require to see your full accounts but will require an accountant’s certificate to be completed. This differs lender to lender. Some will require a full set of accounts and/or an accountant’s certificate! Some will require this and/or tax year overviews and more. They may also require to review business bank statements to review day to day cashflows and possible projections for future income, including potential contracts, etc.

This can also change depending on the make up of your selfemployment, whether a sole trader, partnership, Ltd company director and so on. Deposit requirements can range lender to lender, but the bigger deposit you have, the greater the number of deals will be available to you. Plan ahead. Six months ahead of your mortgage application, make sure you have your house in order. Check your bank statements are in good order, check you have the right accounts and relevant paperwork from your accountant. Don’t have too many credit searches in a short amount of time as this could affect your credit score. Ensure you are on the electoral role and have decent breathing space on card limits and loans. All of this should put you in a good position before the lender even looks at their ability to lend to you!

FYNN TALLEY PROMISING BRIGHTON ‘KEEPER WINS S4S MAIN PRIZE Set4Success also presents an award for Outstanding Achievement, sponsored by Christ’s Hospital School. This year’s recipient is 17-year-old Fynn Talley, who plays for Brighton and Hove Albion FC. The goalkeeper has also represented England at U16 and U17 level. AAH travelled to Brighton’s American Express Elite Football Performance Centre to meet the former Weald School pupil... Tell us about your early footballing days… I joined my local club, Pulborough, when I was about seven, but as they didn’t play matches, I joined Worthing Town. Initially I was a striker, but one day our ‘keeper was injured and the manager decided to put the tallest player in goal. I never looked back!
As a boy, who were the players you looked up to? I thought Joe Hart was unreal, especially when he played for England. I once went to watch a training session at Wembley and he signed my T-shirt and gloves. I've never forgotten that. You were eventually spotted by a talent scout… An Arsenal scout watched a game and invited me for a sixweek trial. They signed me when I was 11 and I was in the youth academy for several years. I improved a lot thanks to Lee Smelt, a fantastic goalkeeping coach. We trained three times during the week with matches most weekends, so it was a big commitment. How did your journey at Arsenal end? I enjoyed every moment, but Arsenal is a very big club and I felt that the pathway to the Senior squad wasn’t good. They
have the money to bring in players from anywhere in the world when they need to and there were many other ‘keepers at the club too. So, I chose to join Brighton and Hove Albion at the end of the Under-14 season as they have a great goalkeeping department and have shown they will offer a pathway to the first team if I’m good enough. You’re currently playing for the U18s at Brighton… I’m still in the U17 age group, playing as a first-year scholar at U18 level. There is a northern and southern league and usually the winners of each will play against each other in a final. We have a good squad at Brighton and are doing well in the southern league. Last year, at U16 level, we played in a tournament against other Category 1 academies and reached the semi-final, losing to Arsenal. We also pushed them all the way in the U18 FA Youth Cup in February, losing 4-3.
You’ve also had the chance to travel as a footballer… With Brighton, I have been to Iceland for a tournament and we went on a pre-season tour to Portugal. During my time at Arsenal, I visited Germany, Belgium and Holland, playing in tournaments against Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Ajax. One of my proudest moments was being selected for England at U16 and U17 level. I travelled to Florida with England U16s for the Nike International Friendlies, where we played United States, Brazil and Holland. I made my debut against Holland, which was an incredible experience. What is your routine like? I have breakfast at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre every morning, apart from Sundays. There’s academic lessons in the morning as we’re working towards a BTEC. Then we train until lunch, although Wednesday

is a recovery day, with gym sessions or psychology in the afternoon. Whenever possible, we watch first team games too. Do you have opportunities to learn from the top players? We have trained with the first team a few times. I love it as the intensity is much higher. It would be great to be a part of that in future. When a player makes the jump to the first team, it gives all of us a boost. You think, ‘if they can do it, why can't I?’
Your next target is the U23s… The aim is to play in the U23 side and impress enough there to progress to the first team. That’s the dream. I am a good shot stopper and because of my height I deal with crosses very well. I’m 6’5” and being tall certainly helps when you’re a goalkeeper. My distribution is one aspect that I need to work on, as the game is changing and Brighton like to play out from the back.

“I am a good shot stopper and because of my height I can deal with crosses well.” You’re currently on loan at Burgess Hill… The club loans players to men’s teams to give them experience of competitive football. Burgess Hill play in the BetVictor Isthmian League, which is very different as teams tend to hit long balls, so I can't play out like I do at Brighton. But players are strong and it's physically demanding, which makes it good experience for me. So far, I’ve only played six games for Burgess Hill and the loan is short term. I wouldn't mind staying longer as match experience is important, but it's up to the club.
And we mustn’t forget Set4Success… It was one of my former teachers at The Weald who first told me about it. I applied a couple of years ago and won an award, so this was the second time I entered. I couldn't make it to the ceremony, as I had an away fixture for Brighton the following day, but my parents attended. We had no idea I would receive the award for Outstanding Achievement! I'm very grateful, as there were some excellent recipients this year, and I’m honoured by the recognition. I’d also like to thank my parents, as when you’re at an academy, it’s a big commitment, as football can become a way of life for your whole family.

SIBLINGS IN SYNC ARTISTIC SWIMMING PAIR LEANNE AND RANJUO TOMBLIN LeAnne, 15 and Ranjuo Tomblin, 14, are the first recipients of a joint award at Set4Success. The Horsham siblings only joined the Atlantis Flamingos – the synchronised or artistic swimming branch of the successful club – in 2017. Yet they have already enjoyed national success and are established as leading competitors in the Mixed Duets category. AAH met them during a training session at The Pavilions in the Park...
Did you both start the sport at the same time? Ranjuo: I went to swimming lessons where I was coached by Francesca Casagrande, who runs Atlantis Flamingos. She suggested that I try out and because I’d previously spent a couple of years at Horsham Gymnastics Club, I took to it straight away. LeAnne used to watch me and joined the club a few months later. Is being brother and sister an advantage? LeAnne: One good thing is that we always make practice! You see people who can’t practice routines as their partner can’t train at the same time. We also do a lot of land training at home.
We don’t have a pool, but we rehearse to get the timings right. There are downsides too, but we get on well, so it’s mostly okay! You’ve been successful already… LeAnne: We won the Mixed Duet category at the south-east competition. At the English Championships we were second overall, but the leading team in England. As well as Mixed Duet, we sometimes join other club members for Team routines in the ‘Free’ category, with six people in the routine together. They can include Solos and Combos too, as the rules are open to artistic interpretation.

How are routines judged? Ranjuo: It depends, as sometimes at competitions you need to include specific technical elements. Normally, marks are given for artistic impression, difficulty and execution. Like diving, if a routine is hard, you can gain more points. But it you don’t execute the routine correctly, you’ll lose more. Artistic impression considers things like facial expressions and how the routine flows with the music, so there’s a lot to think about. Is Artistic Swimming difficult? LeAnne: There is a grading system, from Figure Grade 1 to Figure Grade 6. Grade 1 has basic manoeuvres like the stationary back layout, the hanging vertical (handstand in water) and the inverted split position. As you move through the grades, they become harder. We have both passed Figure Grade 5, which involves complex moves like the submerged vertical twist spin and the barracuda, where you thrust your body vertically out of water.
“Men aren't permitted to compete at the Olympics, although we hope that will change by 2024.” Only one more grade to go... LeAnne: Very few achieve Grade 6 as you need to pass Bronze, Silver and Gold awards at Grade 5 first. Ranjuo is already on Silver. Passing Grade 5 was important, as it’s a requirement at national competitions in the 15 - 18 age category. Ranjuo is still in the 13 - 15 category. Next year, he’ll have to compete with another partner in his age group. Unfortunately, there are no boys at Atlantis Flamingos in my age group, so I’ll have to wait for my

brother to move up! However, there are events where we can still compete together in Mixed Duet, with our next target being the National Championships in April. How does it feel to be Set4Success winners? LeAnne: This was the first time we’ve applied for an award, so it was great to be recognised. The free gym membership from Places Leisure is especially useful for us and the money helps too as it
costs our parents a lot to travel to some events that are further afield. What are your sporting aims for the future? Ranjuo: We would love it if the Mixed Duet was accepted into the Olympics. Currently, men aren't permitted to compete in Artistic Swimming at the Games, although we hope that will change by 2024. More boys are trying it and at Flamingos we have
a few younger boys now. Swim England is very supportive too. I was recently selected as one of the first two boys to be recruited to the Swim England Artistic Swimming Talent pathway. As a member of the national youth squad, I’ll be aiming to perform in the Mixed Duet at the FINA World Youth Artistic Swimming Championships next year. Beyond that, we would both love to represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games.

PERSISTENCE PA ALEX RICHER TYPIFIES THE SET4SUCCESS SPIRIT
In many ways, cross-country runner Alex Richer typifies the Set4Success spirit. Results have not come easily for Alex, 17, but determination has seen her rise through the ranks to earn selection for national competitions. The Mannings Heath runner’s application for a Set4Success award wasn’t successful in a previous year. However, after a fine season that saw her win the Sussex Cross-Country Championship and finish a respectable 15th in the UK Championships, Alex is a proud recipient of the award.
Alex cites Laura Muir as an inspiration and it’s easy to see why. She said: “I see a bit of myself in her as she never gives up and I admire that. Never leave anything on the track!”
Starting out Unlike many athletes, Alex didn’t grow up dominating her school sports day. While always active, her passion for running came after she joined her mum on jogs close to home. “There's a lot of forest trails around us, so we used to run together a couple of times a week,” said Alex. “Initially, I wasn't very fast and mum had to
slow down for me. After a while, I was running ahead and she suggested I join Horsham Blue Stars Harriers.” At Blue Star, Alex met other talented middle and long distance runners and through regular training, her times improved. However, sometimes she would push too hard and this led to injuries. It was in this respect that the expertise of Alan Sweatman, Elspeth Turner and others at the club proved invaluable. Alex said: “It is very easy to do too much of the wrong type of training. The coaches taught me to discipline my training regime
and exercise routines. They also gave me the right mental mind-set when I had setbacks and introduced me to hill repeats (reps) running, which helped me improve.”
Results Pick Up It was only after joining Blue Star Harriers that Alex entered competitions across the county. By her own admission, Alex didn’t make many waves initially, typically finishing in the middle of the pack. But her commitment ensured steady progress and Alex was soon prominent at the sharp end.

She finished third at the Sussex Cross Country Championships to earn selection for Sussex at the UK Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at Loughborough, where she finished 50th. A year later, she was Sussex champion and finished 15th in the UK Championships. “For a while, people didn’t take much notice of me as I wasn’t on their radar,” said Alex. “But I kept going and have become a good competitor. I won the Sussex Championships, was 5th at the South of England Cross Country Championships and 3rd at Sussex Schools Cross Country Championship, gaining selection for the English Schools competition in Leeds. I finished 20th, but was in the lower year of the two-year age bracket, so I was happy with the result.”

The Future Alex is one of the smaller runners on the circuit, but she says this is not necessarily a disadvantage. “Cross Country can be very mucky, like running six kilometres in a mud bath,” she said. “But I don’t mind as when you're sliding around, being smaller can help, as you’re more agile.”

Alex plans to continue running and has the ultimate dream of representing Great Britain at the World Cross Country Championships, before moving into longer distance and marathon events. After college, she hopes to study Sports and Exercise Science at St Mary's University, which has a team of coaches
Receiving a Set4Success award has given Alex further impetus to continue with the sport. She said: “The ceremony was great, as it recognised people from many different sports. I train with Issy Hayes, who is a triathlete and has won the Outstanding Achievement award two years ago. So it was nice that we were all there to receive support from beyond our own circle of family and friends.”

Column by RSPB Pulborough Brooks The sun is low over the western horizon and the sky painted with the glorious pink and orange hues of sunset. Dark silhouettes fly overheard calling ‘jack, jack’; the Jackdaws and Rooks are heading to bed. As the light fades further you can hear the noisy Blackbirds – not the mellow song of the morning but the harsher ‘chink, chink’ calls that signal dusk. And then it becomes twilight, or ‘Owlight’ if you will, and the Tawny Owl begins to call. Perhaps the easiest owl to locate at this time of year is the Tawny Owl. They are a challenge to see, but you can certainly hear them. Male and female Tawny Owls do so by performing a duet which is one of the best known of all British wildlife sounds. The male gives a long quivering hoot which is followed by the females sharper response. This duet tells any other owls that are around that the territory is well and truly occupied by a breeding pair.

Tawny Owl breeds relatively early and you could expect to see the lovely fluffy youngsters in April or May. Balls of grey-brown downy plumage may be spotted near to the nest hole or box as the young owls ‘branch’ – exploring the nearby trees – well before they can fly.
