Safety in Every Season: Protecting Those Who Protect You As the air turns crisp and our Central Pennsylvania landscapes shift into vibrant autumn hues, our focus at AAA Central Penn naturally turns to the changing conditions on our local roads. This season, as we navigate shorter days, falling leaves, and busier school zones, we are renewing our unwavering commitment to traffic safety — a mission that has been at the heart of AAA since our founding in 1902.

Innovating for Roadside Safety One of our most critical priorities remains the “Slow Down, Move Over” initiative to protect roadside workers and emergency responders. To improve visibility, we are piloting roadside service vehicles that feature variable message boards providing clear, illuminated directions to passing motorists. The boards help ensure our roadside technicians, and the AAA members they are serving, stay safe while at the side of the road. Additionally, we have implemented the HAAS Alert Safety Cloud, a cutting-edge system that sends real-time digital alerts directly to vehicle GPS systems and dashboard displays. This technology gives drivers an earlier warning to slow down and move over well before they reach a AAA Central Penn roadside service vehicle.

Eyes on the Road Safety also requires a focus on what is happening inside the vehicle. With Pennsylvania’s new hands-free cell phone law now in effect, it is more important than ever to eliminate distractions and keep your eyes on the path ahead to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. To lead by example, our fleet trucks now feature Surfsight AI-enabled cameras. This sophisticated technology detects signs of distracted driving in real time, helping us maintain the highest safety standards for our roadside assistance technicians and the communities we serve.

Honoring Our Heroes While we invest in technology innovations to improve road safety, we never forget the human cost of roadside incidents. Each year, we support the Wall of the Fallen ceremony in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This solemn event honors the brave technicians across the nation who were killed in the line of duty. Destination Dishes Cincinnati Chili By: Liv Carberry

It wasn’t until my senior year of college when my roommates asked me why I was eating taco meat on spaghetti that I realized Cincinnati Chili is not a typical dish in everyone’s family dinner rotation. Despite its name, Cincinnati Chili is not like normal chili. Although it may display some similarities in appearance and ingredients to regular chili, this dish’s consistency is more comparable to a bolognese or meat sauce and is traditionally enjoyed over spaghetti (though it’s delicious on just about anything). My mom’s family was originally from Kentucky, moving through Cincinnati before eventually settling in Hershey, Pa. Growing up, Mama’s home (my granny’s house) was often where me, my parents, aunt, uncle, and three cousins would all gather for family meals. Cincinnati Chili was always one of my favorite family suppers and was also a favorite of my late aunt Paula. Every October, I make this dish on Aunt Paula’s birthday to honor and celebrate her. The recipe below is a modified version of the recipe given to me by Mama, who clipped it from a Cincinnati newspaper years ago. During this season of coming together to give thanks and reflect on what we’re grateful for, I’m so grateful for the many memories I have of Mama’s kitchen surrounded by so much love. I hope you all find yourself sharing this with your loved ones too.

Cincinnati Chili

Ingredients • 2 pounds ground beef, preferably 80% lean • 1 ½ medium sweet onions finely minced, plus ½ cup set aside for toppings • 6 cloves garlic, finely minced or grated

• ¾ tablespoons salt, plus more to taste • 1/3 cup active dry yeast • 2 tablespoons chili powder • 2 tablespoons sweet paprika

• 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1 teaspoon oregano • 1 teaspoon ground white pepper (can substitute black pepper if necessary)

• 1 teaspoon ground allspice

• ½ teaspoon ground cloves

• 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

• ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, plus more to taste

• ½ teaspoon ground ginger

• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• ¾ cup tomato paste (one 6-ounce can) Accompaniments: spaghetti, chopped onion, shredded mild cheddar, kidney beans, oyster crackers

• 3 bay leaves

is broken up and mixture thickens, about 2 minutes. Add 1 more quart water along with the onions, garlic, tomato paste, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, bay leaves, salt, yeast, chili powder, paprika, allspice, cayenne, cinnamon, cumin, oregano, white pepper, cloves, and ground ginger and mix well.2

Bring to boil, stirring frequently. Lower heat to maintain a gentle simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until chili has thickened to a coherent texture, no longer soupy but not yet thick enough to stand a spoon in, and the flavors have melded, about 3 hours.

A Legacy of Leadership: Honoring 23 Years of Service from Lititz Elementary’s Safety Patrol Advisor, Bob White By: Doni Lee Fox For 23 years, the AAA School Safety Patrol at Lititz Elementary has been shaped by the steady leadership of sixth grade teacher Bob White. His connection to the program began long before he ever became an advisor — back in his own sixth grade year, when he proudly wore the belt and badge himself. That early experience stayed with him, inspiring him to guide new generations of young leaders when he joined Lititz Elementary in 2000. White doesn’t recall every detail of his very first group of patrollers, but he remembers the joy of watching students step into responsibility. “Each of the 23 years I have been the S.P. advisor is filled with many positive memories of instructing our fifth and sixth graders how to be a positive role model and leader,” he shared. While the program has remained largely consistent, one tradition stands out in his memory: the Safety Patrol Hall of Fame. Several of his students earned that honor over the years, and the awards banquet became a highlight — an opportunity to celebrate patrollers who went above and beyond their daily duties. But the moments that stayed with him most weren’t always the ones on stage. White speaks with particular pride about the quieter transformations — the shy students who entered the program uncertain and left with confidence. “Those are the stories that have impacted me,” he said.

Under his leadership, the program developed meaningful traditions that helped students grow. Patrol officers selected “Patrols of the Month,” maintained a display case honoring their peers, and prepared safety presentations for incoming kindergarteners. They also played a key role in the school’s annual Holiday Food Drive, helping pack donations for the local food bank. These routines taught responsibility, punctuality, communication, and the importance of being a positive role model — skills that followed students into middle school, high school, and beyond. White is quick to credit AAA for making the program possible. “Without the support of our AAA program, this program would not exist,” he said. “Supplying our belts, badges, award pins, etc. has been greatly appreciated over the past 23 years.” As he steps down from the advisor role and retires from teaching, the transition is bittersweet. “I will miss working with the kids and teaching them the leadership skills that will benefit them later in life,” he shared. Still, he looks forward to seeing the next advisor build upon the program’s strong foundation. His advice is simple: “Patience. Developing strong, responsible leaders takes time.” Looking ahead, White is excited for a new chapter in retirement — spending more time with family, growing his landscaping business, and enjoying life with his first grandchild, who arrived this July. His hope for every student who wore the belt is clear: “I hope they remember that everyone can make a difference in the life of someone.” After 23 years of service to the AAA School Safety Patrol program and decades of dedication as an educator, Bob White leaves a lasting legacy of leadership, mentorship, and service. The thousands of students whose lives he touched stand as a testament to the difference one committed teacher can make.

Spreading Gratitude One Card at a Time By: Doni Lee Fox AAA Central Penn is proud to launch a heartfelt new initiative to honor and thank our local veterans through the simple yet powerful act of handwritten cards. This community effort invites members, staff, and families to create personalized, handmade cards expressing appreciation for the service and sacrifice of those who have protected our freedom. Whether it’s a thoughtful message, a colorful drawing, or a simple “thank you,” each card serves as a meaningful reminder to our veterans that their dedication is recognized and valued. Handmade cards add a personal touch that makes each message even more special and impactful. Community members are encouraged to participate by creating cards at home, with friends, or as part of group activities. Cards are distributed throughout hospitals, clinics, and vet centers to bring comfort and brighten their day. Please include only first names (school name and grade are acceptable), and the cards should not contain political messages or personal contact information, and not be placed in envelopes. Completed

cards can be dropped off at any AAA Central Penn branch during regular business hours, making it easy for everyone to get involved. Through this initiative, AAA Central Penn continues its commitment to giving back and strengthening the communities we serve. Together, we can share our gratitude and brighten the day of those who have given so much.

Supporting Those Who Served — and the Pets They Love By: Doni Lee Fox AAA Central Penn is collecting pet supplies for local veterans through our partnership with Military Pet Share. The nonprofit helps veterans facing financial hardship cover basic pet care needs, freeing up resources for other essentials and keeping families intact. Donations such as pet food, treats, toys, and basic supplies will go directly to veterans in our community who need a helping hand. Military Pet Share currently serves nearly 200 families across Lebanon and Dauphin counties each month, covering everything from food to veterinary care and preventatives, but relies heavily on community donations to keep up with demand. The collection drive runs Monday, October 13 through Friday, November 19. Donation bins will be available at all AAA Central Penn branches during regular business hours.

Duffels of Comfort: Bringing Care and Dignity to Foster Youth This September, AAA Central Penn is proud to support children in the local foster care system through our Duffels of Comfort collection drive. This initiative focuses on providing essential items to fill duffel bags that will be given to children entering or transitioning within foster care, helping ensure they have comfort, dignity, and a sense of care during a difficult time. Children entering foster care often arrive with their belongings in trash bags. Through Duffels of Comfort, we aim to provide them with a sturdy, reusable bag filled with thoughtful items. Donations may include personal care products, small comfort items, books, blankets, and other essentials that can offer both practical support and a sense of stability. Community members, AAA employees, and partners are invited to participate by donating items throughout the month of September. Alaska: The Great Land The 49th state is far too big, diverse, and magnificent for one article in one magazine to cover it. Still, we had to give it a try.

Few people can fully grasp how big Alaska is. For starters, it’s by far the largest of the states — at 665,384 square miles, it’s bigger than the next three largest states combined. It boasts 6,640 miles of coastline. That’s before you even count all the islands, bays, and inlets. There are 3 million lakes and more than 12,000 rivers. Seventeen of the 20 highest peaks in the United States, including Denali, the highest, are in Alaska. It’s home to more than 40 active volcanoes and more active glaciers than any other region in the inhabited world. The Alaskan wildlife is as astounding as the geography. There are the “Big Five” land mammals, of course — brown bears, moose, caribou, wolves, and Dall sheep. Included with the brown bears are the famous Kodiak brown bears, the Earth’s largest land-based predators. The arctic coast is home to polar bears. The tundra is home to musk oxen and the Arctic fox. The magnificent marine life includes humpback whales, belugas, orcas, harbor seals, and sea otters.

Where to Go Juneau Juneau is the only state capital that cannot be reached by road. Settled in 1880 when gold was discovered nearby, it’s surrounded by forests and glaciers. Travelers are likely to see humpback whales, orcas, eagles, and sea lions. You’ll want to see the massive Mendenhall Glacier, a 13.6-mile-long river of ice located just 12 miles outside of Juneau. Another of Juneau’s popular attractions is the Mount Roberts Tramway. It will transport you up scenic Mount Roberts to an elevation of 1,800 feet. At the summit, you’ll find shopping and dining. Grab a table at the Timberline Bar & Grill to enjoy traditional Alaskan cuisine, including reindeer and smoky bison, accompanied by expansive views.

Watch the sky for bald eagles. They’re common along Alaska’s coastal forests and salmon streams. Other native birds include puffins, the Arctic tern, trumpeter swans, snowy owls, great grey owls, and Alaska’s state bird, the willow ptarmigan, an Arctic grouse that turns from mottled brown in summer to snowy white in winter. Of course, Alaska is more than wilderness and wildlife refuge. There are cities and towns, too. They vary from vibrant coastal hubs, to urban centers offering art galleries and fine dining, to rugged wilderness outposts. Anchorage Home to the renowned Alaska Native Heritage Center and close to Chugach National Forest, Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city and a mix of city and wilderness. Brooks Camp at Katmai National Park and Preserve Brooks Camp is the campground located inside Katmai National Park and Preserve. It’s a world-famous destination for bear viewing, especially at Brooks Falls, where you can watch brown bears catch migrating salmon. You can also fish and hike. While there, take the bus to see the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, a vast ash field created in June 1912 by the eruption of the Novarupta volcano. The easiest way to access Brooks Camp is by seaplane.

Kenai Fjords National Park Kenai Fjords is famous as a place to see tidewater glaciers and the Harding Icefield. Take a boat tour and enjoy a full day of watching whales, porpoises, and thousands of colorful seabirds. Buy your tickets in advance, and choose a reputable tour provider.

When you’re in Ketchikan for the Lumberjack Show, be sure to stop for breakfast at the Alaska Crepe Co.

Hubbard Glacier is North America’s largest tidewater glacier. In fact, it’s larger than the state of Rhode Island. It is one of the few actively advancing glaciers in the world. The ice visible at its face can be as much as 500 years old. You must travel by boat to get to the glacier, which is about 200 miles northwest of Juneau.

Tracy’s Crab Shack Tracy’s Crab Shack in Juneau combines quick service with large portions of first-rate food. Expect to pay up to $100, but the portions are big enough to feed two.

The Hangar on the Wharf This pub and restaurant in Juneau has been going strong for 30 years. You won’t be able to miss the iconic blue building. Built in 1932, it originally served as an airplane hangar for small float plane operators.

What to Do See the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

North of Juneau is Skagway, an important saltwater port during the Gold Rush. When there, stop in at the Skagway Brewing Company. Try the spruce tip beer paired with their famous halibut fish and chips.

The famous race kicks off every March with a festival in Anchorage and a ceremonial start. The official start is in Willow, 70 miles away. The finish is in Nome. It’s a quintessential Alaskan experience, but a very cold one. If you’re truly up for an adventure, you might consider volunteering.

Take in the Fairbanks Midnight Sun Festival Each year in June, about 30,000 people gather for the Fairbanks Midnight Sun Festival. Alaska’s largest single-day event, the festival features 12 hours of non-stop street fair festivities in celebration of the summer solstice.

Experience the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show Many travel experts consider this a “must-see,” especially for families eager to enjoy a hearty good time. The captivating competition features remarkable demonstrations of power and agility and brings to life the storied history of logging in Alaska. Getting Around

By Sea

More than half of all visitors to Alaska arrive by cruise ship. About one-third of travelers fly into the state, primarily landing at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. A much smaller fraction of visitors either drives the Alaska Highway or arrives via ferry. Note that an estimated 80% of Alaska is inaccessible by the standard highway road system. Even travel to many towns relies on airplanes, ferries, and boats.

This is great for spotting wildlife, seeing glaciers, and accessing remote communities accessible only by water or flight. It also offers a pleasant combination of rest and exploration.

By Land

This is an ideal approach for families craving the flexibility to stop when they want, as well as active travelers who want to hike or kayak. It’s also a good way of seeing tiny, out-of-the-way towns.

There’s good reason to try multiple modes of travel when visiting Alaska. Each has something special to offer.

Mix & Match

Many Alaska tours combine modes. Typically its half cruise, half train. It’s our recommendation for those visiting Alaska for the first time.

What to Pack When packing, choose practical, comfortable clothes that can flex. For starters, select moisturewicking base layers. Then add a warm mid-layer like fleece or light down, especially if you’ll be near glaciers, rivers or at high altitudes. For the outer layer, a waterproof, breathable jacket is essential. Even summer outings can include wind, rain, sea spray, and foggy mornings. Pack waterproof pants, too, if you’re going to be undertaking any serious outdoor excursions.

Be sure you have sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Match them with waterproof socks or gaiters. Bring a warm hat, gloves, and scarf for glacier-viewing or early-morning tours. Summer temperatures are often in the 70s, but can also be in the 40s. Always be prepared for rain. Don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen. Also give some thought to protecting yourself from insects, especially when visiting in the summer. The mosquitoes, midges, and biting flies can be brutal. Tightly woven, light-colored, long-sleeved clothing and long pants will go a long way toward protecting you. If you plan on extensive hiking, camping, or exploring remote wilderness excursions, take along an over-the-hat head net to protect your face. Use an insect repellent, too, ideally an EPA-registered repellent containing 30–50% DEET or Picaridin. Fall 2026

Special Considerations Are you hoping to chase the northern lights or see the midnight sun? Would you like to see the salmon run? In such cases, you should choose your travel season and build your itinerary based on the availability of these key experiences. FAQs

Do I need travel insurance? We always strongly recommend travel insurance but especially when traveling to a place like Alaska, where weather can change rapidly and significantly, and outdoor excursions are going to be a major part of the trip.

How many days do I need? Trips of 7–10 days are common, but many people do two or three weeks. Some stay even longer. Err on the side of more rather than less. You will not run out of things to do.

How can I see the northern lights? The best time is between September and April. Fairbanks is a great place for viewing.

What’s the weather like? On average, summer temperatures range from the high 40s to the high 70s. It can reach the 80s in Fairbanks. Always prepare for rain.

Considering Using AI to Plan Your Proceed Next Trip? with caution. By: Laurie Harrington Considering using AI to plan your next getaway? It’s an attractive notion. After all, comparing prices and offerings from multiple sources can be a tedious task. And, there are certainly people with wonderful stories of how quickly and easily an AI bot was able to answer their travel questions or provide them with a detailed itinerary. A recent survey showed that 56% of travelers have used AI to plan at least one trip in the past 12 months. Yet, faith in AI remains low with only 8% of travelers saying they trust AI “almost always.” There’s good reason for that high level of caution in spite of the tricks that AI can perform. A string of recent news stories has illustrated how using AI to plan a trip can backfire …

Tourists in the Canary Islands traveled to Taganana, a secluded mountain village, to visit a historic hermitage. Upon arriving, they found that the church didn’t exist, although the viral AI video they saw made it look quite real.

An Australian travel operator landed in hot water after an AIgenerated article sent tourists to an out-of-the-way location in Tasmania looking for non-existent hot springs. The sincedeleted article urged travelers to explore Weldborough Hot Springs, one of the “7 Best Hot Springs Tasmania Experiences for 2026.” Weldborough, however, has never had hot springs.

In a case reported from Peru, two tourists were about to set off to find the “Sacred Canyon of Humanity” in the Andes Mountains before a local tour guide who overheard their plans stopped them from continuing to the non-existent locale. The guide pointed out that the trip would not only be disappointing, but also dangerous, as the tourists could find themselves lost at a high altitude without a phone signal.

Two travelers in Japan used an AI tool to plan a sunset hike up a mountain. After reaching the summit, they realized their AI guide had given them incorrect operating hours for the descending ropeway, and they were stuck in the dark.

Hallucination happens The phenomenon at work here is known as AI hallucination, and it’s alarmingly common. Random falsehoods can even appear buried within content that is largely true and accurate. Depending on what AI platform you’re using or the topic at hand, hallucination rates can range from 2% to more than 40%. Even at the low end, that’s problematic: Imagine that you’ve received 100 sentences outlining complex travel plans for an international trip, and two of them are completely fabricated. AI has other issues beyond hallucination. Platforms are not continuously updated, so any information offered up might be out of date. Operating hours are just one example. AI may also not be up to date on temporary road closures, live weather disruptions, or real-time airline ticket prices. Basic idea generation is an AI strength, so it’s not unreasonable to consult AI when you’re looking for ideas for travel destinations. It works best when you provide good guidelines, such as your particular interests and your budget. For example, to get some suggestions for destinations, you might type in something like this: • I have a $2,000 budget. • I want to travel for a week in October.

• I want warm weather. • I want to hike. • I want good food.

When we entered this information into ChatGPT, we quickly received recommendations for Madeira, Portugal; Oaxaca, Mexico; Malaga, Spain; Costa Rica; and Utah. In a world full of untold numbers of options, this is definitely a helpful start and a great short list to take to your travel advisor, who can confirm the destination is the right fit for you.
