Hicks announces pending resignation

By Jeff Tucker Record Staff Writer

Fifth Judicial District Attorney Janetta B. Hicks told the Daily Record Saturday she would soon step down as district attorney due to personal and financial concerns. Hicks, in the second-half of her second four-year term as district attorney for Chaves, Eddy and Lea counties, said she would resign effective May 31. “It is with a mixture of

satisfaction and regret that I announce my retirement,” Hicks told the Daily Record Saturday night in a statement she said she would release to all media on Monday. “I greatly appreciate the trust given me by the people of this district and my service as district attorney has been a high honor. After 25 years of public service, for personal and financial reasons, I have decided to step down.” Hicks was first elected Fifth Judicial District Attorney in 2008 after defeating

Terry Haake in the Republican primary and running unopposed in the general election. Hicks defeated fellow Republican Janet Ellis in the 2012 Republican primary and ran unopposed again in the 2012 general election. There are no term limits in New Mexico for district attorneys, so Hicks would have been eligible to seek re-election in 2016. Hicks currently has an annual salary of $110,000 and oversees 67 positions in the Fifth Judicial District

Attorney’s Office. Under state law, the governor will appoint a successor to Hicks, who will serve until the next election, in 2016. “I am proud of the staff at the district attorney’s office and the team effort and hard work that we have put in together,” Hicks said. “I am confident that Governor Martinez will find an able successor and hope that person comes from within my office.” Hicks, of Roswell, maintains her main office in Roswell. Some local Republicans

said Saturday they would like to see Hicks’ successor also come from Chaves County. “I personally would like to keep the seat in Roswell,” said Joan Boué, president of the Chaves County Republican Women. “I feel very strongly about that, but I also realize we, as Republicans, need to get the best qualified person that is going to meet the needs of the three counties that are

Hollywood director does New Mexico Military Institute By Bill Moffitt Correspondent The director who ordered “more mean” and “more green” on the set of “The Incredible Hulk” TV series wrapped up a week’s worth of shooting at New Mexico Military Institute following the school’s graduation exercises Saturday. Chuck Bowman played a variety of characters on the TV series “Adam-12” and “Dragnet” — each one different — before settling behind the camera directing for the late Hollywood legend Stephen J. Cannell. Cannell produced such

hit TV shows as: “MacGyver,” “In the Heat of the Night,” “Murder, She Wrote,” “Swamp Thing: The Series,” “The Greatest American Hero,” “The A-Team,” “Touched by an Angel,” and “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.” Bowman admitted that doing a documentary is a bit different from doing a scripted show. “You still have to plan

and schedule your shots,” Bowman said, “but once the camera starts rolling anything can happen.” Bowman did one docudrama based on real-life food air drops in Afghanistan. However, when the supply trucks arrived, bandits mobbed the scene forcing Bowman to do a hasty retreat reminiscent of George Kastanza’s fire escape scene in “Seinfeld.”

“People were all over me and I started backing up. I was elbowing everyone out of my way shouting: ‘Let me through, I’ve got the camera!’” The NMMI project is not Bowman’s first experience with military school situations. “I shot a pilot at West Point a few years ago and that was one of the highlights of my life,” he said. “I was there for two-and-ahalf months and we were at the shooting ranges and recreating war games (and things). “I had five actors and See SPOTLIGHT, Page A3
