Albuquerque man killed in crash near Tatum
Staff Report
TATUM — The New Mexico State Police reports that a 29-year-old Albuquerque man was killed Friday in fatal head-on crash on U.S. 380 near Tatum that led to the arrest of an Oklahoma man for homicide by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and several other charges. Police say alcohol may have been a contributing
factor in this crash. The Albuquerque man, Freddie Marquez, sustained fatal injuries in the crash, according to a released statement from the NMSP. He was transported from the scene to Nor-Lea Hospital in Lovington where he was later pronounced dead. Juan Esparza Montelongo, 31, of Woodward, Oklahoma, fled the scene on foot but was located approximately 1 1/2 hours
later and taken into custody. He was booked into the Lea County Detention Facility on the following charges: • Homicide by vehicle (under the influence of alcohol or drugs). • Great bodily harm by vehicle (under the influence of alcohol or drugs). • Accidents involving death or personal injuries (no death or great bodily harm).
• Leaving the scene of an accident involving damage to vehicle. • Failure of duty to give information and render aid. • Open container (first offense — possession). • Leaving the scene of an accident involving damage to vehicle. Montelongo was being held Saturday on a no-bond warrant and was expected to appear before a judge on Monday, a jail
officer said. The officer said he was not authorized to release Montelongo’s mug shot. A passenger in Marquez’s vehicle, Yantse Ramirez Dequesada, 32, of Albuquerque, sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from Nor-Lea Hospital. The initial investigation revealed a vehicle driven by Montelongo was westbound on U.S. 380 near
mile marker 210 when he attempted to pass a vehicle. Upon entering the opposite lane, he struck Marquez’s vehicle head-on. Police say the collision occurred around 3:50 p.m. The NMSP Crash Reconstruction Unit is assisting with this investigation. This vehicle crash is still under investigation.

Second Saturday at the Roswell Museum and Art Center was costume-making day for the kids. To the left, Ride Sturza, 11, crafts a shield of armor out of cardboard with a soldering iron. About 25 kids were at the arts and crafts workshop designing their costumes, and some of them might be entered into the costume contest during the UFO Festival July 2-5.

By Jeff Jackson Record Staff Writer Roswell’s connection to the Olympic Games at the youth and elite levels is a former Olympian himself. Although he has slowed down in recent years, Jan Olesinski has a long history of training Olympians as a coach at the New Mexico Military Institute starting soon after he twice represented Poland in the Olympics (1980, 1984) as a pentathlete. His subjects have included a 2004 bronze medal winner at the Athens Games and a trio of medal-winners in the Junior Olympics and international competitions. Olesinski takes pride in his training efforts that helped former NMMI cadet Mary Beth Larsen earn a pentathlon bronze in Greece, in addition to her competing in the 2000 Sydney Games, and
working with his daughter, Anna, and two brothers. One of those men, Nathan Schrimsher, is a candidate for next year’s elite-level Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. “I feel great because you’re doing your job. I can do only so much. I could tell them you have to stay with me, we have to train but I know that it’s not for me, it’s for them,” Olesinski said in his pool-side office at NMMI. “You have to tell them, like all kids, here we can do only an introduction, give them direction but after this you have to let them go. Same like when your kids are home. You raise them, go to high school, then college. But then you have to go. I can try to make them stay here but if I make them stay here and train with me it doesn’t help.” See SPOTLIGHT, Page A2

Books are art pieces just like statues and paintings, and one local collector is spreading the word. Six authors from Roswell and one from Santa Fe bounded together at the Roswell Public Library on Saturday for a four-chapter event titled “A Bookish Affair” organized by Eva McCollaum, a self-de-
scribed writing teacher and boutique publisher. “Roswell has a thriving community for artists and potters. If we can have that we should be able to have one for books as well, but we need to make that connection,” McCollaum said. “In order for writers to serve the community, they need to meet them,” she See LIBRARY, Page A3

At a news conference before they confirmed his death, Brown said the gunman had identified himself as James Boulware and had said he blamed police for having lost custody of his son and for “accusing him of being a terrorist.” The chief cautioned that it was possible the suspect didn’t give
