Obama gains Syria-strike support

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama gained ground Tuesday in his drive for congressional backing of a military strike against Syria, winning critical support from House Speaker John Boehner while administration officials agreed to explicitly rule out the use of U.S. combat troops in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack. “You’re probably going to

win” Congress’ backing, Rand Paul of Kentucky, a conservative senator and likely opponent of the measure, conceded in a late-afternoon exchange with Secretary of State John Kerry. The leader of House Republicans, Boehner emerged from a meeting at the White House and said the United States has “enemies around the world that need to understand that

we’re not going to tolerate this type of behavior. We also have allies around the world and allies in the region who also need to know that America will be there and stand up when it’s necessary.” Boehner spoke as lawmakers in both parties called for changes in the president’s requested legislation, rewriting it to restrict the type and duration of any military action

that would be authorized, possibly including a ban on U.S. combat forces on the ground. A new resolution was written Tuesday by Sens. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn. It could get a vote by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Wednesday. Menendez is the chairman and Corker is the top Republican on the panel. “There’s no problem in

“We’ll let the Legislature and courts decide after this what needs to be done,” Zamarripa said in a telephone interview.

His comments came shortly after District Judge J.C. Robinson issued an order requiring the clerk to issue marriage licenses “on a nondiscriminatory basis” to same-sex couples.

In a separate case, Los Alamos County Clerk Sharon Stover is fighting a similar court order and said she won’t immediately change her policy of denying marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Local, state law officials Locally filmed flick celebrate Solis’ retirement premieres tonight JESSICA PALMER RECORD STAFF WRITER

Officials from the city, state and county gathered at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center, Tuesday, to bid Roswell Police Chief Alfonso Solis farewell. Solis retired after being diagnosed with cancer. He will return to Las Cruces where his family lives. Representatives of every law enforcement agency attended, including Capt. Dina Orozco of the New Mexico State Police, Lt. Britt Snyder from the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office, members of the U.S. Marshals Service, Crime Stoppers President

Steve Wolfe and Richard Lucero of Neighborhood Watch. Mayor Del Jurney spoke first, proclaiming Sept. 3, 2013, Al Solis Day. He thanked Solis for opening up the lines of communication between City Hall and the police department and gaining cooperation between the various agencies, including the F.B.I and U.S. Marshal Service, which led to the first police round-up of suspected drug traffickers. Jurney then presented Solis with the key to the City. Secretary of the Department of Public Safety Gordon E. Eden Jr., traveled from Santa Fe to attend.

He discussed Solis’ long years of service to his country and New Mexico. Eden, like Solis, had served as the U.S. Marshal for the District of New Mexico, starting in 2002, and he reminded people what an important position it was, requiring presidential appointment and confirmation by the Senate. Solis served as President Ronald Reagan’s appointee from 1987 to 1992. Eden said until Solis took over the post that New Mexico was known in Washington as Area 51 since so little was known about it. “Roswell FM,” a locally filmed movie starring Brendan Fehr about a paranormal radio show will debut at the White Sands Film Festival in Las Cruces today. Fehr, who played Michael Guerin in the “Roswell” television series from 19992002, plays the lead character, Jay Rathbone. The independent film was written by Dave Spence and directed by Steven Griffen. Producers include Griffen, Spence, Alan Trever and Carl Lucas. Other main characters are played by Jason Lon-

don, of “Dazed and Confused,” and Mirelly Taylor. The movie is centered around Rathbone, a radio host at the station. “He’s the most normal and best one on the air,” Spence said. “He is the one who is keeping the station afloat. He loves his job and they love him.” Rathbone is staying with his sister and her odd-ball son. When her son is accepted to a good college, the three of them have to find the money to pay for tuition. Rathbone decides to take a job to help out his nephew, Spence said. “It’s about him trying to See PREMIERE, Page A3

Harvest Ministries founder Rubinstein passes the torch AMY VOGELSANG RECORD STAFF WRITER

“Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for the rest of his life.” It is this philosophy that led Pastor Rubie Rubinstein to end up under a bridge, handing out food to the homeless from the back of his pickup truck. But as the saying goes, it wasn’t just about providing food for the moment, but for helping people strive within the community.

This was how and why he started Harvest Ministries, and now, 10 years and eight months later, Rubinstein is passing the torch (or in this case a Hoover vacuum piece) to friend and former racetrack pastor, Mark Green.

“We prayed about it and talked about it (…) and it felt like the right thing to do,” Green said of his new position as executive director of the ministry. Although he has always been in ministry, this position gives him big

shoes to fill, according to the praise Rubinstein received from members on the ministry’s board. “I have always admired the gift that God placed on this man’s life,” said board member Perry Toles. But as Rubinstein put it, it’s more than having the gift of evangelism; it’s about having the heart of an evangelist. This is a trait that helped lead to choosing Green. What started as a small
