Council rejects mayor’s ETZ appointees

By Jeff Tucker Record Staff Writer

Amid an accusation of political bullying, the Roswell City Council Thursday night rejected Mayor Dennis Kintigh’s recommendations for new appointees to a zoning board slated to hear an appeal of a proposed medical marijuana growing facility. The city council voted 8-2 Tuesday night on a motion rejecting the mayor’s recommendations for new appointees to the Roswell-Chaves County Extraterritorial Zoning Authority. City Councilors Natasha Mackey and Juan Oropesa, who

were Kintigh’s choices for new appointees to the ETZ Authority, were the only two city councilors to back the mayor in the 8-2 vote. In a subsequent “housekeeping” vote, the city council voted 9-1 in favor of City Councilor Steve Henderson’s motion to retain City Councilors Tabitha Denny and Savino Sanchez Jr. on the ETZ Authority. Oropesa was the only city councilor to back the mayor in the 9-1 vote. “Alright, fair enough,” Kintigh said after the votes.

A family trying to raise money for their child’s funeral after a tragedy at Bottomless Lakes State Park recently suffered another loss after an armed robber stole a donation jar from a cashier’s counter when he couldn’t scare the cashiers into giving him any of the store’s money. According to Roswell Police Public Information Officer Todd Wildermuth, officers responded to the Family Dollar Store on the 900 block of East Second Street around 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, where cashiers told police a white male in his early 20’s entered the store and asked for cigarettes. Cashier Marcy Sanchez told the Daily Record it was just another average day at work. She was gathering some items she had purchased to make dinner for her family when she noticed the suspect in line with one customer ahead of him. Her co-worker refused to sell him the cigarettes because he couldn’t produce proper identification, Sanchez said, and thats when he pulled a large hunting knife and demanded money. “He demanded both of us give him money from the register,” Sanchez said. What the suspect didn’t know is that Sanchez had

RISD teacher eval results are released

ILEA-Roswell welcomes delegates

By Dylanne Petros Record Staff Writer Teachers in the Roswell Independent School District are getting better, according to evaluation results that were released. Superintendent Tom Burris released the results at Tuesday’s school board meeting and said the teachers in the district are better than the state’s average. Evaluations are comprised of three different sections, Burris said. Twenty-five percent of the evaluation comes from teacher observation, 25 percent comes from teacher attendance and student and parent surveys. The other 50 percent comes from student achievement, he said.

Right: Delegates from Ghana, Malawi and South Africa are welcomed to Roswell in a reception held at the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art Tuesday. The 25 delegates are here for four-weeks to be taught by the International Law Enforcement Academy-Roswell. ILEA-Roswell exposes “participants from around the world to critical foreign policy objectives of the Department of State and the latest techniques in criminal justice practice,” according to their official website. John Chavers, from ILEA-Roswell, said that even though there are five ILEAs in the world, the ILEA in Roswell is the only one that brings delegates from around the world. Chavers said ILEA-Roswell hopes to bring the “best and brightest from around the world.” Top: The delegate leader from Malawi waves the New Mexico flag as he makes his speech.

Last year, there were 186 teachers in the district who were rated effective. This year that number jumped to 270. “We grew quite a bit,” Burris said. RISD is even doing better than the state. This year the state has 78 percent of teachers rate as effective or better. RISD has 80 percent of teachers rated at effective or better. The state decreased 5 percent from last year’s score while RISD increased 14 percent. To get their score, teachers are evaluated using percentage points, Burris said, which is the amount of points earned over possible points multiplied by
