Commission denies junkyard man’s appeal

By Jeff Tucker Record Staff Writer After some heated discussion, the Chaves County Commission on Thursday denied an appeal from the owner of a debris-ridden property that county leaders last month ordered cleaned up. Ernest “Rod” Tricarico, owner of the property just north of the city of Roswell, appealed a resolution unanimously approved by the commissioners on April 16 that ordered Tricarico to clean up his property at 6105 N. Main St. The property is littered with several partially deconstructed mobile homes and debris. The resolution declared the property to be “a men-

wreckage or debris within 15 days. The resolution stated if Tricarico did not clean up the property himself, the county could move forward

and perform the cleanup and place a lien on the property for the cleanup costs. Tricarico, of Roswell, had 10 days to appeal the com-

missioners’ decision. He filed an appeal on April 23. The commissioners heard Tricarico’s appeal Thursday morning, and the discussion at times became

intense and heated. The commissioners said they had given Tricarico more than enough time to See JUNK, Page A3

Early actions can Clubhouse co-owner: Sparks, fire shot reduce mosquitoes out of electric panel at back of building By Jared Tucker Multimedia Journalist

Submitted They are tiny bugs that can be big nuisances, but everyone can take steps now to reduce the prevalence of mosquitoes in and around Roswell this summer. Local residents can help limit the number of mosquitoes by getting rid of places where water collects, which is where mosquitoes breed. The city’s Public Works Department encourages residents to be aware of several places and activities to consider in order to help eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites around their properties: Remove or empty all containers in your yard that might hold water (examples might be tires, wheelbarrows, buckets, cans, unused planters). Change water in birdbaths at least weekly. Empty children’s small

pools between uses. (This is important for child safety reasons as well.) Clean out home gutters for proper drainage. Tighten tarps over wood piles and equipment so water doesn’t collect in the folds. Avoid overwatering, and keep lawns and weeds trimmed. Notify the Utilities Department at 347-5421 for assistance if you have a substantial pool of standing water that persists for several days. Neil Roe said he was alone in his building, 20 minutes away from leaving his office for the day and returning to his co-owned restaurant to work the night shift when he smelled something burning and looked up to see smoke coming out of the ceiling. He grabbed his cellphone and began to call 911 as he ran to the back of the building where he found sparks and fire shooting out of an electric panel. His building, better known as “The Clubhouse,” was on fire. The Clubhouse, located at No. 3 Tierra Grande Boulevard nine miles west of Roswell, ended up burning to the ground Wednesday afternoon despite a multifire department effort to save the structure. “There was some grass on fire, right behind the building, apparently from some sparks,” Roe said. Roe said when he looked up at the building an elec-

He and one of his employees were able to get the grass fire out, but the fire had already spread into the walls and attic. While fire units were en route, Roe said he had time to get several items out of

his office before it was overcome with thick smoke. “I just quickly figured, what do I want to grab quick that might be useful to me because I’m going to maybe lose some stuff possibly,” Roe said. Roswell Fire Department
