Morsi offers nothing to defuse crisis

CAIRO (AP) — An angry Mohammed Morsi refused Thursday to call off a referendum on a disputed constitution that has sparked Egypt’s worst political crisis in two years, drawing chants of “topple the regime!” from protesters who waved their shoes in contempt.

The Egyptian president’s uncompromising stand came a night after thousands of his supporters and opponents fought pitched battles outside his Cairo palace, leaving at least six dead and 700 injured.

Speaking in a nationally televised address, Morsi accused some in the opposition of serving remnants of Hosni Mubarak’s authoritarian regime and vowed he would never tolerate anyone working for the overthrow of his “legitimate” government.

That brought shouts of “the people want to topple the regime!” from the crowd of 30,000 Morsi opponents — the same chant used in the protests that brought down Mubarak.

Morsi also invited the opposition to a “comprehensive and productive”

dialogue starting Saturday at his presidential palace, but gave no sign that he might offer any meaningful concessions. The opposition has already refused to engage Morsi unless he first rescinds decrees giving him nearly unrestricted powers and shelves the draft constitution hurriedly adopted by his Islamist allies in a marathon session last week. Morsi said the referendum on the disputed charter would go ahead as See EGYPT, Page A3

SANTA FE (AP) — Two outside political groups free from New Mexico’s campaign contribution limits spent nearly $4 million to influence legislative races, which ended up with Democrats retaining control of the House and Senate. According to a campaign finance report filed on Thursday, a political committee with ties to Republican Gov. Susana Martinez spent $2.4 million in the primary and general election campaigns. The group — Refor m New Mexico Now — paid for advertising and mailings in 31 House and Senate races, including several Democratic primary contests, according to Jay McCleskey, the governor’s political adviser. A Democratic-leaning political group called Patriot Majority New Mexico dumped almost $1.4 million into general election contests. The group was formed in August and received most of its money from labor unions. It backed about 20 House and Senate candidates, according

HONOLULU (AP) — Ray Emory could not accept that more than one quarter of the 2,400 Americans who died at Pearl Harbor were buried, unidentified, in a volcanic crater. And so he set out to restore names to the dead. Emory, a survivor of the attack, doggedly scoured decades-old documents to piece together who was who. He pushed, and sometimes badgered, the government into relabeling more than 300 gravestones with the ship names of the deceased. And he lobbied for forensic scientists to exhume the skeletons of those who might be identified. Today, the 71-year anniversary of the Japanese attack, the Navy and National

Farmers Market owner Bill Fenn, left, and General Manager Robert Garcia show off the store’s recent improvements and added amenities, Thursday.

Farmers Country Market, 2800 N. Main St., is having a two-week celebration — a grand opening — following an expansive and expensive renovation. Owner Bill Fenn, of Fenn Foods Inc., said he considers it an “opening” rather than a re-opening because “we basically built a new store.” “This particular location is the best location I own and we were underutilizing

it,” he said. “So, I decided we were going to do something and we were going to do it right.”

The renovation project started in February and ended at the end of October. With an additional 10,000 square feet, the store boasts an all new, spacious interior featuring décor and architecture inspired by souther n Europe and the Mediterranean. “Bill’s vision was to give Roswell this uptown feel with an uptown store,” said
