Gov. Susana Martinez wanted to make one thing clear to the city of Roswell, Saturday. In the afternoon she attended a rally at the First Christian Church along with Robert Corn, Candy Spence Ezzell and Cliff Pirtle, all of whom are running for office. They all addressed the crowd and spoke on key issues that affect the state such as education and the controversial Real I.D. Act. Martinez heavily endorsed Pirtle and Ezzell and urged voters to put the right people in office so they can move the state of New Mexico in a positive direction. She ended by assuring the crowd that she will never stop fighting for those who put her in office. As the crowd dispersed, several people stayed to chat with the candidates and some walked across the street to cast their votes. Many left satisfied with the words spoken during the rally. One of those individuals was Johnnie C. Stites, who said the governor’s words compelled him to vote that same day. He said he appreciated how all of her plans were laid out in plain English. “It made a lot more sense now than it has in the past,” he said. “When people say one thing, it ends up being the opposite. She’s pushing forward and whatever she wants to get done, I know it’s going to get done.” Festivities then moved to the Yucca Center on S. Richardson, and the pep rally-style meeting fired up constituents, including Georgia Perry, who was compelled to volunteer her time during these last few weeks of the election season. Roswellians are encouraged to trade in their alien costumes for zombie ones on Oct. 27 for the Zombie Walk Roswell and Thrill the World Roswell at Pioneer Park. Saturday was rehearsal for the event and though it was a somewhat paltry crowd, Juliana Halvorson, one of the event’s organizers, said she’s more than confident many will come out for the actual event. The dance starts at 1 p.m .and will be followed by the costume contest and Zombie Walk. The Zombie Walk will move south on Main Street and will cross over and end at the courthouse lawn. This is the second year of the events and Halvorson said they had an outstanding turnout last year. “Last year we had 185

BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanese protesters erected flaming roadblocks and gunmen roamed the streets Saturday in a city on edge after the assassination of a top security official in a powerful car bomb the prime minister linked to the civil war in neighboring Syria. The crisis raised a terrifying specter for Lebanese who fear their country could easily plunge back into cycles of violence and reprisal that have haunted it for decades. Friday’s blast in the heart of Beirut’s Christian area killed eight people, including the country’s intelligence chief, Brig. Gen. Wissam alHassan. It was the deadliest bombing in Beirut in
four years, shattering the country’s uneasy calm. The government declared a national day of mourning for the victims Saturday, but protesters burned tires and set up roadblocks in anger. Sharbal Abdo, who lives in the neighborhood where the bomb went off, brought his 6-year -old son, Chris, and 12-yearold daughter, Jane, to see the destruction Saturday. “They were very afraid yesterday,” he said. “They need to face this situation. It may be their future.” Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Saturday linked the bombSee BOMB, Page A3

The Spring River Park & Zoo was the place to be early Saturday mor ning at the eighth annual Buddy Walk. The sounds of the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Got a Feeling” could be heard all the way across the street as the day kicked off with aerobic-style exercise to high-energy music.
