No one knew what would happen because no one had ever done it. But from the edge of space, where risk outweighs reward for most, Felix Baumgartner made history. The Austrian pilot parted ways with the Earth’s surface Sunday from the Roswell International Air Center at approximately 9:30 a.m., seated in his capsule and taken skyward by a fragile, 55-story helium balloon. In his two-and-a-half hour ascent that was not without its share of tense moments, Baumgartner reached an altitude of more than 24 miles, the highest anyone has ever traveled by balloon. At this point, he said, there was only one thing he could do. “Trust me, when you stand up there on top of the world, you become so humble. It’s not about breaking records anymore. It’s not about getting scientific data. It’s all about coming home.” Baumgartner jumped from 128,100 feet above the New Mexico desert. He reached Mach 1.24 within the first 40 seconds of his free fall, becoming the first person to break the speed of sound without an aircraft. It happened 65 years to the day that Chuck Yeager became the first man to go supersonic See SKYDIVE, Page A3

Food drive to help nearly depleted pantry
With the holiday season just around the corner and many families throughout Chaves County in need, the Roswell Chamber of Commerce and the Roswell Daily Record have joined forces to sponsor The Salvation Army’s Emergency Call-Out Food Drive. The food drive, set to take place from Oct. 15 to Nov. 30, will allow The Salvation Army to restock its emergency food pantry that is used for low income families, adults with disabilities and the homeless. “This is not our usual fall seasonal appeal,” Capt. Beau Perez, corps officer, said. “This is due to special circumstances: the fact that our emergency food stock is just depleted.” According to a written project description provided by Capt. Mandy Perez, corps officer, 21 percent of Chaves County residents live at or below poverty

WASHINGTON (AP) — There they go again. Or do they? Will Mitt Romney miscount the number of unemployed, as he has before? Will President Barack Obama’s dubious claim of a peace dividend, bopped down in the last debate, rise again? When Obama and his Republican challenger debate Tuesday night, the media’s factchecking corps will be watching for problematic claims that have popped up repeatedly in the campaign, as well as brand new ones. You can play fact-check
Whac-a-Mole on debate night, too. You might have your hands full: The format, driven by questions from the audience, could shake things even looser than usual.
Executive Director of Roswell Refuge Michelle Royer recorded one victim’s story and received permission to publish it. The victim was willing because her husband had been in prison for the things he had done. The names have been changed to protect the victims’ identity.

To be sure, you’re not likely to catch one of them saying it’s daytime when it’s night. Shades of mistruth are more common than whoppers. Often, the offense is one of omission: an accurate as-far -as-itgoes assertion that ignores something really important, like the other side of the ledger. And, at times, the debaters tweak a statement
to make it closer to right. To assist in ar mchair fact-checking, here’s a guide to 10 of the leading misleading statements of the campaign: OBAMA: —The president has told the nation he wants to take “some of the money that we’re saving as we wind down two wars to rebuild America.” There is no such pile of cash. The wars were financed mostly with borrowing. So treating the end of wars as a financial bonanza just means conSee FACTS, Page A3
