The Missoula Children’s Theatre and some 24 local children performed a creative version of the classic “Jack and the Beanstalk” Friday and Saturday at the Roswell Community Little Theater. The children learned their lines and songs in less than a week after a few touring actors with the Montana-based company held tryouts Monday. “It went really well this week.” said Nick Wineman, with the Missoula Children’s Theater. “It’s pretty exhilarating. There are always points when you’re wondering if it’s all going to come together. The kids were fantastic. It was a whole lot of fun.” The Roswell theater hosted several parents and community members for the uplifting show as the children sang, danced and performed. The theater also served punch and cake after the final show. Children in grades kindergarten through high school were able to audition Monday and all were cast, Wineman said. HS director Burnett retires JILL MCLAUGHLIN RECORD STAFF WRITER
Roger Burnett said Friday he will miss the volunteers the most as he reflected on the past 14 years he spent as director of the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico. Several friends, volunteers and board members surrounded him with well wishes during his retirement party. “It feels strange,” Burnett said. “What I will miss most are the volunteers. There are some special people here, I’ll tell you.” Volunteer Vivian Lochemes returned the sentiment. “He’s a fantastic man and is going to be missed,” Lochemes said. Roger Burnett and wife, Pat, greet well wishers during Burnett's retirement party at the Historical Society for Southeastern New Mexico, Friday.
Fire trucks and police cars filled in the Lawrence Brothers’ parking lot on 2nd Street Saturday as the smell of burgers and hotdogs floated through the air. The day was warm, but it didn’t seem to hinder participation in IGA’s fourth annual Salute to First Responders cookout.
Ever since his son suffered two strokes, store director Blake Meek has held a special place in his heart for the men and women who are first on the scene at emergencies. In an attempt to repay and thank the first responders, Meek started up a cookout. Police officers, EMTs, fire fighters and all those who respond first in dangerous or See IGA, Page A2
