IT’S UNION RAGS BY A NECK!

NEW YORK (AP) — Union Rags picked up right where I’ll Have Another left off, coming from behind to catch a Bob Baffert-trained horse at the finish in a Triple Crown race. In Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, it was another photo finish decided by a neck. Just like the Preakness. The 3-year-old bay colt barreled through a slim opening on the rail to edge Paynter, dealing Baffert, jockey Mike Smith and owner Ahmed Zayat a third loss in this year’s Triple Crown series. “We needed every bit of the mile and a half,” winning trainer Michael Matz said. - PAGE B1

Fiddle & Griddle the newest of our fun things to do NOAH VERNAU RECORD STAFF WRITER

People from all over the country traveled to downtown Roswell this weekend to attend the very first Fiddle & Griddle Festival, enjoying an abundance of live musical entertainment and delectable foods. With 21 fiddlers and seven barbecue cook-off contestants vying for $28,000 in prize money, all of the action took place on Main Street, which was blocked off for the event from Second to Fifth streets on Friday and Saturday. “Everybody just pitched in and made it happen,” said Dusty Huckabee, festival organizer. “I think this is going to be an event that’s going to last for years to come. ... “With this festival, we’re going back to our

roots, which is farming and ranching. And that’s what built the Pecos Valley.” Cook-off contestants vied for BBQ supremacy in three categories: chicken, pork ribs and beef brisket. Zana and Dave Wood from Las Cruces placed first in the chicken and pork ribs categories, and captured the overall grand prize. The duo, whose team name is Burnt Wood, took home $3,200 in total prize money. Zana Wood said this was the couple’s first barbecue contest. “It’s a great event. I think it gets a lot of backyard barbecuers, which is what we are, interested in doing this. ... With the other contestants, the camaraderie — this is just amazing.” Cindy Wilson, head judge, commented, “The See FIDDLE, Page A3

Quoth, a Chihuahuan raven and resident of Spring River Zoo, visits the Home and Garden Show, Saturday.

The fourth annual Enchanted Living Home & Garden Show began Saturday at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center, with vendors from Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma and New Mexico. The show, which resumes today at 11 a.m., has about 20 filled spaces with representatives offering the latest in products and services, including flooring, appliances, win-

dows, doors, sunrooms, furniture, landscaping and creative decor. Trish Thompson, show director, said the show brings more opportunities to Roswell than just shopping. Mini-seminars are provided at individual booths, including Pampered Chef, which is on hand to offer food samples and share infor mation about creative menus and cooking. Thompson, who has been a part of the show each

year, said a huge benefit to those who attend are the ideas generated during seminars. “The show has been brought together to not only celebrate spring and summer, but also to offer knowledge — to provide answers regarding the home and garden. ... “A lot of people come in and want to set up appointments to meet with these people while they’re in See HOME, Page A3
