OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — It’s a warning as familiar as a daily prayer for Tornado Alley residents: When a twister approaches, take shelter in a basement or low-level interior room or closet, away from windows and exterior walls. But with the powerful devastation from the May 20 twister that killed 24 and pummeled the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore still etched in their minds, many Oklahomans instead opted to flee Friday night when a violent tornado developed and headed toward the state’s capital city. It was a dangerous decision to make. Interstates and roadways already packed with rush-hour See FLEE, Page A3

Elks golf tourney earns big money for charity
JILL MCLAUGHLIN RECORD STAFF WRITER The weather was perfect this year for the 104 golfers who took part in the Elks for Vets Charity Golf Tournament at New Mexico Military Institute’s golf course on Saturday. “This time of year it can get hot but the weather cooperated with us,” said head golf pro Crae Fields. “The course conditions
were perfect. Mainly, everybody had a good time.”
By the end of the tournament, the weather only reached 84 degrees and the players relaxed at the Roswell Elks 969 Lodge for lunch. This year’s tournament was a grand success, earning $29,000 for the South East See ELKS, Page A3

Everyone loved the revenue agents when they put away Al Capone, the Chicago underworld’s master of brutality and bribes, in a coup so spectacular it scared other gangsters straight.

Conservative Republican legislators in major states are trying to block efforts by more pragmatic governors of their own party to accept health insurance for more low-income residents under President Barack Obama’s health care law.
Unlike their congressional counterparts, who’ve misfired in repeated attempts to torpedo the law, state Republicans may
well sink the expansion of Medicaid in populous states such as Florida and Michigan. That would mean leaving billions of dollars in federal matching funds on the table and hundreds of thousands of the poor uninsured. Expansion opponents say it’s an issue that goes to their core beliefs. “It’s an ideological principle piece to us on the conservative side,” said state Rep. David Gowan, majori-
And they’re off! Three lucky shoppers dash for groceries
JILL MCLAUGHLIN RECORD STAFF WRITER Chandler Montgomery and his wife, Shauna, had a plan Saturday morning as they grabbed their cart in the Noon Optimist’s Dash for Groceries contest. First, they planned to fill it with dog and cat food to donate to the local humane society. Unfortunately, that was against the rules. Instead, as third-place winners, the couple with three children had only one minute to grab as much produce, dairy, cereal and other items before the buzzer.
“I went for the meat,” Chandler Montgomery said. He was rather successful. The couple managed to walk away with nearly $230 in free groceries as third-place raffle winners. “It’s pretty exciting,” See DASH, Page A2
