SANTA FE (AP) — New Mexico’s celebrated its 100th birthday Friday with a host of events that kicked off a yearlong Centennial party. Gov. DAWKINS WILL NOT PLAY SUNDAY

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Brian Dawkins’ biggest contribution Sunday in the AFC wild card playoffs will be with his talking and not his tackling. Hampered by a neck injury, the Denver Broncos’ emotional leader hasn’t practiced in weeks and was ruled out Friday for the first-round game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Still, Dawkins will be heard, even if it’s screaming from the sideline instead of barking out the calls. - PAGE B1

Kintigh, Wooley not happy with new District 66 JULIA BERGMAN RECORD STAFF WRITER

State Reps. Dennis Kintigh, RRoswell, and Bob Wooley, RRoswell, on Friday expressed similar sentiments toward the consolidation of their two legislative districts: disappointment. District Judge James Hall on Tuesday approved a redistricting plan, advocated for by Republican Gov. Susana Martinez and other GOP statewide officials, for the

“I am going to run. I’ve made no bones about it. I fought too hard to get here in the first place three years ago. It was a knock down, brutal battle and I intend to stay,” Kintigh said. Wooley said he also plans to run for the district at this time.

boundaries of state House of Representative districts. Under the plan, the two incumbents, who are officemates in Santa Fe and sit next to each other on the floor of the House, are lumped into District

66, which is currently represented by Wooley. When discussing the pairing separately, both representatives spoke highly of one another. “That hurts. That hurts because

Bob Wooley is one of the finest gentleman I’ve gotten to know,” Kintigh said, “It’s not a surprise. It’s been talked about really since June, the concepts have floated.” “Dennis and I are both disappointed that this happened,” said Wooley. “Neither one of us want to be put in this situation where we have to make a decision as to whether or not to run against each

Greg Odom

There are a growing number of music courses at Roswell High School, and they can all be traced to one person: Greg Odom. The high school band director has a simple goal: music. Seen as a learning tool that can positively and productively impact other aspects of one’s life, Odom has helped promote music for all, music for beyond high school and music as a way to integrate the school experience with real life. Odom moved to New Mexico from his native Kansas in 2002, to be the

band director at Sierra Middle School. Two years later, he was band director at Roswell High. Currently, he is the Fine Arts Department chair man at RHS, where he oversees choir, art, drama, orchestra and of course, band. Odom also teaches New Mexico history to ninth-graders. Aside from the customary marching band, concert band, and even a jazz band, Odom has increased

the musical of ferings at Roswell High to include a percussion ensemble, music appreciation and music theory. The percussion ensemble was entirely studentinspired; an experiment in combining what students love about their craft with what is taught in school. “I had a couple of students ... who had gone to see the show, ‘Stomp,’” Odom said. “They came to

me, wanting to do ‘Stomp’like songs.” The show, which Odom’s students saw in Albuquerque, combines percussion and choreography. The students’ excitement about the production inspired Odom to meet with them after school to learn some new repertoire. When Odom realized how much interest the students had in the new songs, he started the percussion ensemble. Music theory, Odom said, is a class that would have served him well had he had the chance to take it. See SPOTLIGHT, Page A2
