We also acknowledge those who have supported you along the way, especially your parents, guardians, families, friends and loved ones. Reaching this day has taken sacrifice and determination. For many of you, the journey has not been easy. There were pressures and moments of uncertainty. But you continued, and today we recognise what you have achieved.
You enter the world at a time of great complexity. Across the globe, many societies are living with conflict and socioeconomic strain. Many are also affected by division. Here in South Africa, we continue to face inequality, unemployment and the unfinished work of building a more just and inclusive society. These issues influence the daily lives of millions of people, especially those who continue to live on the margins. Yet there is still hope for humanity in those who continue to care for others and for the world we share.
That is why your education is so important. It is indeed for personal advancement, but it is also for service. It is part of the work of restoring dignity and widening opportunity. It is also for helping to build communities in which people can live with hope. Your degree is an achievement to be proud of, but it also comes with responsibility. As UWC graduates, you are part of a university guided by courage and critical thought. It is also a university with a strong sense of social purpose. Whatever path you follow from here, I hope that will remain with you. Use what you have learned with integrity. Do so with generosity and a clear sense of justice.

Ons erken ook diegene wat julle langs die pad ondersteun het, veral julle ouers, voogde, families, vriende en geliefdes. Om hierdie dag te bereik, het opoffering en vasberadenheid geverg. Vir baie van julle was die reis nie maklik nie. Daar was druk en oomblikke van onsekerheid. Maar julle het voortgegaan, en vandag erken ons wat julle bereik het.

Your graduation comes at a time when South Africa, and the world, continue to face serious challenges. We are living through a period of socioeconomic pressure and technological change. It is also a period affected by conflict, persistent inequality and climate instability. We are living through a complex time in which public trust and social justice remain urgent concerns. These realities form part of the world you are entering as graduates. Amid these issues, it remains possible to act with purpose and to help build a better future.
For that reason, your qualification is significant both as a personal achievement and as a public good. A university education equips you with knowledge and skills. It also develops your judgement, your ethical sense and your capacity to work with others in addressing the challenges of our time. 1960: The University College of the Western Cape opens its doors.

1978: UWC’s Cape Flats Nature Reserve is declared a National Monument (now known as a provincial heritage site).
1987: New Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Jakes Gerwel, declares UWC as the ‘university of the left’. The University deracialises and opens its doors to African students.
UWC inaugurates its longest-serving Chancellor, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who would serve for more than 25 years.
1990: UWC becomes the first university to award the late President Mandela an honorary doctorate upon his release from prison.
1994: Many academics from UWC join President Mandela’s government and are appointed to ministerial and advisory positions, including its Rector, Prof Gerwel, who became the Director-General in the Presidency.

1994: UWC’s leadership takes part in writing the higher education policy for the incoming government. The South African interim Constitution and final Constitution are drafted at UWC.
1995: UWC launches its first website – joining the internet age before other universities in the Mother City.
UWC launches the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) to engage in research, training, policy development and advocacy in relation to land reform, rural governance and natural resource management.
2002: Under the leadership of Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Brian O’Connell, UWC successfully resists being merged. Instead, its Dentistry Faculty is merged with that of the University of Stellenbosch, making UWC the only dentistry faculty in the Western Cape.
2010: 10 SARChI chairs awarded to UWC, the highest number awarded to any university in SA that year (as of 2018, UWC hosts 17 SARChI Chairs).
2012: UWC launches its Technology Transfer Office to help promote the development and protection of the intellectual property of the University’s research community, staff and students.

2015: Prof Tyrone Pretorius is inaugurated as the new Rector and Vice-Chancellor.
2016: UWC’s Centre for Humanities Research is awarded the Flagship on Critical Thought in African Humanities by the NRF.
UWC is ranked number 1 in Physical Science – not just in South Africa, but for Africa as a whole – in the 2016 Nature Index.
2017: A group of UWC students, led by Prof Nico Orce, conduct the second major African-led experiment at the CERN laboratory in Switzerland.

2018: The Faculty of Dentistry launches a state-of-the-art video conferencing system that allows students to watch live surgeries in class or at home – a first for South Africa.

2020: UWC’s South African National Bioinformatics Institute (SANBI), in collaboration with researchers from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), sequenced the first SARS-COV-2 genome in South Africa, providing a genetic “fingerprint” helped us understand - and contain - the spread of COVID-19.

2022: Professor Russell H Kaschula is appointed as the Research Chair in Forensic Linguistics and Multilingualism – a first in Africa.

The Effect of Trade Liberalisation on Economic Growth in Libya
Description:
This study examines the effect of trade liberalisation on economic growth in Libya in the context of prospective WTO accession. Using a mixed-methods approach, it combines econometric analysis of secondary time-series data from 1988 to 2017 with qualitative evidence from interviews and questionnaires. The findings indicate that trade liberalisation can positively influence economic growth by increasing openness, exports and participation in global value chains. However, Libya’s overdependence on oil, weak diversification and structural constraints expose the economy to external shocks. The study concludes that trade liberalisation should be accompanied by institutional reform, diversification and stronger domestic capacity to support sustainable growth.

School-level and out-of-school factors influencing academic performance of public secondary schools: A comparative study of selected Nigerian states
Description:
This study examines the school-level, out-of-school, and institutional factors influencing academic performance in public secondary schools in Abia and Oyo States, Nigeria. Using a qualitatively driven mixed-methods design, the research draws on interviews and questionnaires with ministry officials, principals, and teachers. The findings show that, although both states face infrastructural and resource constraints, Abia benefits from stronger administrative coordination, higher teacher motivation, more functional school governance structures, and greater parental engagement than Oyo. The study concludes that academic performance is shaped by the interaction of governance, teacher motivation, school conditions, and community support.

Gender Inequality and Food Security in a Changing Climate: A Spatial Analysis Using Nigerian General Household Survey Data
Description:
Stanley Egenti conducted his doctoral research in his home country, Nigeria, where he critically examined the interplay between gender inequality and food security in a changing climate. Sen’s entitlement theory, feminist political economy, spatial inequality and the institutionalist approach were engaged as the theoretical framework while adopting a quantitative research method. Using advanced statistical models, the candidate critically assessed the opportunities, challenges and constraints of gender inequality and food security. His thesis provides recommendations and alternative policy options. Examiners collectively agreed that the dissertation was produced with immense attention and resulted in advanced work at the PhD level.

The development and empirical evaluation of a workforce retention model for Nigeria’s healthcare sector
Description:
Timileyin Mobolaji Fashola’s thesis developed a retention model for Nigeria’s healthcare sector, focusing on doctors. It studied how psychological capital moderates the effects of psychological contract violations, career concerns, and uncertainty on doctors’ retention. The study addressed Nigeria’s doctor shortage by proposing an intervention based on positive psychology to boost workforce retention. Surveying 362 doctors using regression, PROCESS, and SEM, results showed that contract violations, career concerns, and uncertainty reduced retention, but high psychological capital reversed these effects and improved retention. This pioneering study suggests that policies that strengthen doctors’ psychological resources can enhance retention despite contractual issues and work uncertainties.

Assessing the Governance Model of Small-Scale Fisheries in the Western Cape: A Pathway to Sustainable Livelihoods or Precarity?
Description:
The thesis examines how political economy influences the governance of small-scale fishing after Apartheid, impacting the current state of fisheries resources, food systems, and livelihoods in these communities. Primary data collection included in-depth interviews, participant observations, focus group discussions, stakeholder engagement sessions, parliamentary meetings, in-depth interviews, reports, and life histories in Doringbay, Veldrif, Langebaan, Hout Bay, and Ocean View. The key species investigated were West Coast Rock Lobster and linefish like snoek, harders, cape bream. The key findings indicate that the current fisheries governance approaches, the implementation of the new small-scale fisheries policy, and the commercialisation and marketisation economic strategies all failed small-scale fishers and increased their marginalisation and exclusion in governance processes and benefiting from economic opportunities.

This doctoral study developed a participatory community-based assessment framework to strengthen community participation in development planning and promote sustainable livelihoods. Using an exploratory embedded single-case study in Kokong village, Botswana, the research integrated the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework, Asset-Based Community Development, and Community-Based Participatory Research. Through semi-structured interviews, participatory workshops and thematic analysis, the study identified key factors shaping community participation and produced an applied conceptual framework to guide communitydriven planning and participatory development practice in marginalised rural contexts.

Development Planning in Nigeria: An assessment of legislative constituency projects (LCPs) in the Niger Delta (ND) 1999-2019
Description:
The thesis is a contextual investigation of community participation in the development trajectory of the oil-dependent Niger Delta. The study found, amongst other constraints, an absence of formal participatory frameworks, unilateral, bureaucratic development decisions, socio-economic vulnerabilities, information gaps, and power asymmetries, which collectively undermine community participation. This thesis shows that mere information sharing is not participation, as participation must ultimately be based on decisions collectively taken during community participation processes. The study found that community participation is largely informal and not an institutionalised, grassroots-driven process in the Niger Delta. Accordingly, the thesis recommends a bottom-up, formalised community participatory framework.

South African infrastructure development: Potential partners, obstacles, and growth prospects
Description:
The study assessed how mission-critical infrastructure investment influences economic growth in South Africa. It also evaluates potential long-term infrastructure partners within a complex geopolitical and macroeconomic environment, and reviews financing options, with emphasis on private and public sector participation and collaboration. Econometric modelling show that private infrastructure investment positively and significantly affects economic growth in both the short and long term. Moreover, investments in freight transport, ICT and energy infrastructure have the strongest short-term growth effects. In the context of geopolitics, the study highlights the importance of South Africa’s strategic neutrality, strengthened multilateral cooperation, and diversified financing mechanisms, including domestic institutional investors and public–private partnerships.

Perfect Mazani conducted doctoral research on exploring the role of solidarity within diverse migrant communities and its impact on their resilience and food security in South Africa. The research project was situated within the conceptual framework of Social Capital and Resilience Theory, and a mixed methods research design was adopted for the study. Using thematic analysis and innovative statistical models, the study provided key insights into the significance of solidarity in diversity. The research makes a remarkable contribution to a broader understanding of migrant solidarity associations as key drivers in strengthening resilience and improving food security in South Africa.

Economic imperatives of academic achievement and student retention in South African higher education institutions
Description:
Student retention and academic achievement remain critical global challenges, with persistent dilemmas in resource allocation. This study, using PLS-SEM, investigated how South African universities can optimise resource allocation across student, academic, social, and institutional support interventions to enhance student retention, academic achievement, and economic benefits. Apart from positive relationships, the study found a negative effect of institutional interventions on academic achievement, suggesting potential inefficiencies in resource allocation. The study suggests future research to employ longitudinal, multi-institutional designs to assess the sustained effects of theory-driven models for optimising student support on academic achievement and student retention.

Rethinking terrorism in Mozambique: A critical analysis of the use of the terrorism term to describe the violence in Cabo Delgado
Description:
The study critically examines the use of the term “terrorism” to describe political violence in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. It does not accept the terrorism framing as neutral or commonsensical, but investigates the confluence of factors that made such a framing possible, what responses to the conflict this framing legitimises, in whose interest and to whose detriment. Labelling political violence as terrorism securitises violence, in turn justifying emergency and unconventional measures to mitigate the perceived threat. The securitisation of violence can have serious consequences. In the case of Cabo Delgado, these include obscuring root causes of the conflict, militarising responses, internationalising the conflict, the violation of human rights, and delaying peace processes.

An investigation into more efficient Water, Energy and Food nexus applications to enhance food security and sustainable livelihoods for the poor in the Philippi Horticultural Area, Western Cape
Description:
This thesis investigates how more efficient Water, Energy and Food (WEF) nexus applications can strengthen food security and sustainable livelihoods for poor communities in the Philippi Horticultural Area, Cape Town. Using a qualitative case study approach, it combines literature review, semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions to examine resource interdependencies, governance constraints and stakeholder experiences. The findings show that although informal nexus practices exist, implementation is hindered by fragmented governance and weak coordination. The study concludes that integrated, participatory WEF strategies can improve resource efficiency, farmer resilience and poverty reduction in the PHA and similar contexts.

The three proteas symbolise Teaching, Culture and Education.
The stepped pattern represents the steps that lead to the Greek temple. This is the international symbol for academia and our recognition that we are a part of it.
The laurel leaves indicate competition and victory.
The diamond-shaped protea petal represents strength of character, ethics and faithfulness to oneself and others.
The continuous pattern that extends from the front to the back speaks to Respice Prospice, which means to look back, to look forward. Take what is good from the past and build the future.
The beaded effect is meant to reflect African craft and creativity.
The colours that make up the band are derived from those that represent the seven Faculties that make up the University.
