We also acknowledge those who have supported you along the way, especially your parents, guardians, families, friends and loved ones. Reaching this day has taken sacrifice and determination. For many of you, the journey has not been easy. There were pressures and moments of uncertainty. But you continued, and today we recognise what you have achieved.
You enter the world at a time of great complexity. Across the globe, many societies are living with conflict and socioeconomic strain. Many are also affected by division. Here in South Africa, we continue to face inequality, unemployment and the unfinished work of building a more just and inclusive society. These issues influence the daily lives of millions of people, especially those who continue to live on the margins. Yet there is still hope for humanity in those who continue to care for others and for the world we share.
That is why your education is so important. It is indeed for personal advancement, but it is also for service. It is part of the work of restoring dignity and widening opportunity. It is also for helping to build communities in which people can live with hope. Your degree is an achievement to be proud of, but it also comes with responsibility. As UWC graduates, you are part of a university guided by courage and critical thought. It is also a university with a strong sense of social purpose. Whatever path you follow from here, I hope that will remain with you. Use what you have learned with integrity. Do so with generosity and a clear sense of justice.

Ons erken ook diegene wat julle langs die pad ondersteun het, veral julle ouers, voogde, families, vriende en geliefdes. Om hierdie dag te bereik, het opoffering en vasberadenheid geverg. Vir baie van julle was die reis nie maklik nie. Daar was druk en oomblikke van onsekerheid. Maar julle het voortgegaan, en vandag erken ons wat julle bereik het.

It is also a period affected by conflict, persistent inequality and climate instability. We are living through a complex time in which public trust and social justice remain urgent concerns. These realities form part of the world you are entering as graduates. Amid these issues, it remains possible to act with purpose and to help build a better future.
For that reason, your qualification is significant both as a personal achievement and as a public good. A university education equips you with knowledge and skills. It also develops your judgement, your ethical sense and your capacity to work with others in addressing the challenges of our time. 1960: The University College of the Western Cape opens its doors.
1970: The institution gains independent university status and is allowed to award its own degrees and diplomas.

1978: UWC’s Cape Flats Nature Reserve is declared a National Monument (now known as a provincial heritage site).
1987: New Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Jakes Gerwel, declares UWC as the ‘university of the left’. The University deracialises and opens its doors to African students.
UWC inaugurates its longest-serving Chancellor, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who would serve for more than 25 years.
1990: UWC becomes the first university to award the late President Mandela an honorary doctorate upon his release from prison.
1994: Many academics from UWC join President Mandela’s government and are appointed to ministerial and advisory positions, including its Rector, Prof Gerwel, who became the Director-General in the Presidency.

UWC launches the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) to engage in research, training, policy development and advocacy in relation to land reform, rural governance and natural resource management.
2002: Under the leadership of Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Brian O’Connell, UWC successfully resists being merged. Instead, its Dentistry Faculty is merged with that of the University of Stellenbosch, making UWC the only dentistry faculty in the Western Cape.
2010: 10 SARChI chairs awarded to UWC, the highest number awarded to any university in SA that year (as of 2018, UWC hosts 17 SARChI Chairs).
2012: UWC launches its Technology Transfer Office to help promote the development and protection of the intellectual property of the University’s research community, staff and students.

2022: Professor Russell H Kaschula is appointed as the Research Chair in Forensic Linguistics and Multilingualism – a first in Africa.

Characterising the Antiviral Properties of the Small Molecule, M4
Description:
For her doctoral research, Jihaan Adonis investigated new ways to combat influenza viruses that are becoming resistant to existing antiviral drugs. She studied a novel compound, M4, which was shown to block all influenza viruses known to infect humans. Unlike current drugs that target viral proteins, M4 works by acting on a host protein, STARD7, which the virus hijacks to support its growth. This research provides the first evidence that STARD7 plays a key role in influenza virus replication and highlights host proteins as promising targets for future antiviral therapies.

Establishing a framework for social accountability in psychology education in South Africa
Description:
This study developed a framework for undergraduate Psychology education in South Africa designed to achieve equitable mental health services for marginalised communities. The study assessed current education practices, student perceptions, and academic experiences. The findings highlight the need for Psychology education to engage with contextual factors that affect mental health in the community and embed African knowledge systems. The proposed framework emphasises inclusion of experiential learning, stakeholder partnerships, and alignment between higher education and the health system to produce graduates who are capable of addressing priority mental health needs by promoting access to basic mental health services.

Hydroacoustic technology: Sound science for managing South Africa’s forage fish resources
Description:
We use light and radio-waves to look up at the cosmos: we use sound waves (hydroacoustics) to look down into the ocean. Janet’s nine-chapter thesis integrates 40 y of hydroacoustic, biological and fishery data to provide a thorough assessment of SA’s pelagic fish survey programme. It identifies and corrects major sources of acoustic bias to reduce systemic error and improve long term use. It quantifies fish biomass in the hard-to-access, unsampled near-shore zone, developing species-specific bias corrections. It also presents mesopelagic biomass estimates based on refined target strength relationships. Species- and year-specific spatial analyses reveal strong distributional shifts in key species driven by environmental variability, fishing pressure, survey design and stock structure.

Does Mondia whitei play a role in the treatment of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia?
Description:
Mondia whitei is an African medicinal plant used for ailments such as sexual dysfunction or urinary infection. It has also shown cytotoxic effects in prostate cancer. This study explored its potential in treating prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Eurinah Koeras tested the extract on TM3 Leydig, TM4 Sertoli, LNCaP prostate cancer, and PWR-1E non-tumorigenic prostate epithelial cells. The extract showed dose-dependent effects: it increased testosterone in Leydig cells, boosted Sertoli cell activity at low doses but was inhibitory at higher doses, and reduced viability and PSA levels in prostate cells. Results suggest cytotoxic activity in prostate cancer and a biphasic effect in BPH. Yet further studies are needed. Eurinah won several SANORD and 3MT awards for her work.

Assessing the effects of bush encroachment on streamflow rate using remote sensing in the Letaba catchment, South Africa
Description:
This PhD research presents a high-resolution assessment of the hydrological impacts of woody plant encroachment in the Letaba River catchment, South Africa, by integrating advanced geospatial analysis with process-based hydrological modelling. It systematically quantifies long-term land use and land cover dynamics and evaluates corresponding streamflow responses under varying environmental conditions. The results reveal a pronounced expansion of woody vegetation, a concomitant decline in grassland, and a measurable reduction in streamflow primarily driven by increased evapotranspiration. The study significantly advances the understanding of coupled land–water interactions in semiarid systems and provides a robust scientific foundation for informing integrated and adaptive land and water resource management in the context of ongoing ecological transformation.

An integrated reservoir geomechanical characterisation and simulation study on feasibility of CO2 storage in a mature hydrocarbon field, Bredasdorp Basin, offshore South Africa
Description:
Global efforts to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere to slow down or rather stop climate change, do accelerate and technology to put CO2 into depleted gas fields is growing fast. This study has looked at using part of the depleted gas field in the rocks beneath the ocean near Mosselbay. Understanding the effect of pumping CO2 into these empty reservoirs helps to understand the many risks associated with that process as the increased pressures may release stresses that may result in earthquakes, which in turn can cause tsunamis. She found that our depleted gas fields present promising opportunities, though their geological complexity poses challenges. The work about CCS appraisal in our offshore basins is published in 3 papers and provides a guide for pilot projects and regulatory planning.

Evaluating the distribution and development of gully erosion and its implications for land productivity in Zimbabwe at various spatial and temporal scales
Description:
This work presents a national-scale assessment of gully erosion dynamics using multisource remote sensing, machine learning, and cloud computing. Integrating optical satellite imagery, in-situ observations, and erosion modelling, it captures spatial–temporal variability often missed by conventional methods. Results indicate substantial variation in soil loss across sub-catchments, strongly driven by varying land management practices. Remotelysensed derivatives and geospatial models improve erosion susceptibility mapping, while the Weight of Evidence approach confirms the influence of key environmental drivers on gully formation. The study provides a robust, scalable framework for monitoring soil erosion in data-scarce, semi-arid environments.

Nuclear structure studies and source calibration tests relevant for 136Xe neutrinoless double beta decay
Description:
The current description of nature at its most fundamental level leaves several profound questions unanswered. For example, equal amounts of matter and antimatter produced in the very early Universe ought to have annihilated each other, leaving a cold and dark void, with no galaxies or life-forms. This is clearly not the case. Jespere Ondze’s doctoral research contributes to global efforts to explain the matter-dominated Universe, through studies related to an unobserved process called neutrinoless double beta decay (0nbb). In collaboration with Stanford University, Jespere performed vital calibration and simulation studies relevant for a next-generation 0nbb detector. He further conducted independent spectroscopic measurements to benchmark theoretical calculations essential for this field.

Predictors of the time to sputum culture conversion and the intensive phase treatment outcome in patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis
Description:
This retrospective study analysed 1,162 drug-resistant tuberculosis patients treated in South Africa (2009-2015) to identify predictors of sputum culture conversion and treatment outcomes. 73.41% achieved successful conversion with a median time of 3 months. Risk group classification was the sole independent predictor of stable conversion; low-risk patients had 74% reduced hazard compared to high-risk (HR: 0.26, p=0.0011). HIV-positive patients converted faster than HIV-negative (49.6 vs 58.1 days, p=0.0009). Isoniazid mono-resistant tuberculosis patients had 7.28-fold higher odds of unfavourable outcomes (p=0.0034). 6 antiTB drugs correlated with earlier conversion (1.90 months average). Recommendations: Larger prospective studies needed to validate these predictors and optimise treatment strategies.

Characterisation and evaluation of Pelargonium sidoides endophytes and root-derived bioactive compounds as natural preservatives of food
Description:
This research advances postharvest food preservation by integrating microbial ecology, phytochemistry, and biopolymer science. This study characterised spoilage microorganisms associated with fresh produce, profiled antimicrobial metabolites from Pelargonium sidoides roots, and investigated the diversity and activity of associated endophytes. By developing extract-fortified chitosan edible coatings, the study demonstrated significant suppression of microbial spoilage and extended shelf life of fruit under ambient storage conditions. The work provides a scientifically grounded, biodegradable preservation strategy that contributes meaningfully to sustainable food security research.

This PhD investigated the effects of in-utero nicotine and alcohol exposure on vascular intima-media thickness, endothelial function, and early cardiometabolic risk in children living in a low-income setting. The work generated six publications, including four in Q1 journals, as well as a book chapter and a systematic review. One additional article has been accepted and another submitted for peer review, contributing important evidence on developmental risk pathways and early-life vascular health.

Probing Cosmology with the MeerKAT interferometer
Description:
Neutral hydrogen intensity mapping is opening a new window on cosmology with radio telescopes. This thesis constitutes a substantial and original contribution to the field, demonstrating how the faint neutral hydrogen signal can be recovered from MeerKAT interferometric data without relying on direct galaxy detections. It presents a large and coherent body of work in which novel analysis methods are developed, rigorously tested, and validated against MeerKAT observations. The results provide important new insight into the recovery of the HI power spectrum and will help shape future intensity-mapping studies with MeerKAT and the forthcoming SKA surveys.

Advanced analysis of human sperm using computer-aided sperm analysis and flagellar applications
Description:
While conventional semen analysis provides insight into male fertility and overall reproductive health, it often is subjective. Technological advances have introduced more objective approaches, such as computer-aided sperm analysis (CASA) and flagellar analysis and sperm tracking (FAST), to assess sperm motility. This study used both CASA and FAST to assess how physiologically-relevant environments influence the functionality of sperm subpopulations and to highlight relationships with structural features of the flagellum (e.g. sperm centrioles). The results denote that, with optimal capturing properties (frame rate and chamber depth), FAST offers complementary discernments that could improve semen analysis, potentially leading to better treatment choice in assisted reproductive techniques.

The three proteas symbolise Teaching, Culture and Education.
The stepped pattern represents the steps that lead to the Greek temple. This is the international symbol for academia and our recognition that we are a part of it.
The laurel leaves indicate competition and victory.
The diamond-shaped protea petal represents strength of character, ethics and faithfulness to oneself and others.
The continuous pattern that extends from the front to the back speaks to Respice Prospice, which means to look back, to look forward. Take what is good from the past and build the future.
The beaded effect is meant to reflect African craft and creativity.
The colours that make up the band are derived from those that represent the seven Faculties that make up the University.
