MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR

HEADER SUB-HEADER

Welcome to this important day in the life of the University of the Western Cape. Today we celebrate you, our graduands, and we honour the discipline and perseverance that have brought you to this point. We also acknowledge those who have supported you along the way, especially your parents, guardians, families, friends and loved ones. Reaching this day has taken sacrifice and determination. For many of you, the journey has not been easy. There were pressures and moments of uncertainty. But you continued, and today we recognise what you have achieved.

You enter the world at a time of great complexity. Across the globe, many societies are living with conflict and socioeconomic strain. Many are also affected by division. Here in South Africa, we continue to face inequality, unemployment and the unfinished work of building a more just and inclusive society. These issues influence the daily lives of millions of people, especially those who continue to live on the margins. Yet there is still hope for humanity in those who continue to care for others and for the world we share.

That is why your education is so important. It is indeed for personal advancement, but it is also for service. It is part of the work of restoring dignity and widening opportunity. It is also for helping to build communities in which people can live with hope. Your degree is an achievement to be proud of, but it also comes with responsibility. As UWC graduates, you are part of a university guided by courage and critical thought. It is also a university with a strong sense of social purpose. Whatever path you follow from here, I hope that will remain with you. Use what you have learned with integrity. Do so with generosity and a clear sense of justice.

Ubuntu recognises that our lives are bound up with those of others. In a time when many people still feel excluded or unheard, that understanding still holds. The world needs graduates who are capable and thoughtful about how they use their knowledge and how their choices affect others. Congratulations on all that you have achieved. May you go forward with confidence and a sense of responsibility to others. God bless.

Ungena kwihlabathi ngexesha lobunzima obukhulu. Kwihlabathi liphela, uluntu oluninzi luphila ngongquzulwano kunye noxinzelelo lwentlalo noqoqosho. Abaninzi nabo bachatshazelwa kukwahlukana. Apha eMzantsi Afrika, siyaqhubeka nokujongana nokungalingani, intswelangqesho kunye nomsebenzi ongagqitywanga wokwakha uluntu olunobulungisa ngakumbi noluquka wonke umntu. Le mibandela ichaphazela ubomi bemihla ngemihla bezigidi zabantu, ingakumbi abo baqhubeka bephila elunxwemeni. Ukanti kusekho ithemba ngoluntu kwabo baqhubeka benyamekela abanye kunye nehlabathi esikulo.

Yiyo loo nto imfundo yakho ibaluleke kangaka. Ngokwenene yeyokuhambela phambili komntu, kodwa yeyokukhonza. Kuyinxalenye yomsebenzi wokubuyisela isidima nokwandisa amathuba. Kukwanceda ukwakha uluntu apho abantu banokuphila ngethemba. Isidanga sakho yimpumelelo onokuzingca ngayo, kodwa ikwaza noxanduva.

Daarom is jou opleiding so belangrik.

In ’n tyd wanneer baie mense steeds uitgesluit of ongehoord voel, geld daardie begrip steeds.

Dear Graduands,

MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR

HEADER SUB-HEADER

Few moments in university life speak more clearly to the purpose of higher education than graduation. It is a time to celebrate achievement. It is also a time to recognise discipline and perseverance, and to acknowledge the support of families, friends, lecturers and mentors who have walked this journey with you.

Your graduation comes at a time when South Africa, and the world, continue to face serious challenges. We are living through a period of socioeconomic pressure and technological change. It is also a period affected by conflict, persistent inequality and climate instability. We are living through a complex time in which public trust and social justice remain urgent concerns. These realities form part of the world you are entering as graduates. Amid these issues, it remains possible to act with purpose and to help build a better future.

For that reason, your qualification is significant both as a personal achievement and as a public good. A university education equips you with knowledge and skills. It also develops your judgement, your ethical sense and your capacity to work with others in addressing the challenges of our time. At UWC, we believe that higher education should prepare graduates who can think critically, act responsibly and contribute meaningfully to society.

You have reached this day through sacrifice and determination. Many of you had to overcome various obstacles. That experience will have influenced what you know and who you are becoming. The strength you have shown in completing this journey will serve you well. As UWC graduates, I hope you will take with you a strong sense of social purpose and thoughtful engagement. Use your education with purpose and in ways that widen opportunity for others. In a society still facing deep inequality, that responsibility should be taken seriously. Congratulations on your achievement. We wish you every success in the years ahead.

Liewe UWK-gegradueerdes,

Om daardie rede is jou kwalifikasie betekenisvol, beide as ’n persoonlike prestasie en as ’n openbare bate.

Thesis:

Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) students’ experience of reflective practice as part of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) within two Higher Education Institutions

Description:

This study examines PGCE students’ reflective practice during Work Integrated Learning at two higher education institutions. Informed by Shulman’s Pedagogical Reasoning and Action Model and Bourdieu’s sociocultural theory of habitus, field, and capital, it reveals a persistent gap between university theory and classroom realities. Despite emotional exhaustion and time pressures, students demonstrate agency through spontaneous strategies like reflection-in-transit and peer mock-classes. Critical opportunities for reflection remain underutilised in triadic mentoring and microteaching. Recommendations include extending the PGCE to 18–24 months and integrating reflective practice longitudinally across modules and placements for deeper theory–practice synergy.

Pre-Service Teachers’ Preparedness, Adoption and Integration of ICTs for Technological Pedagogical Practices at a Higher Education Institution in South Africa

Description:

The study explored pre-service teachers’ preparedness to integrate ICT into teaching at a higher education institution. Using the mixed-method design, data were collected from 300 Bachelor of Education students a higher education institution. The theories used in the study were the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Technology Acceptance Model and Technology Integration Planning model which together guided the development of a new framework, the Pedagogy, Technology and Content (PTC) model. This model links pedagogy, technology and content to prepare pre-service teachers to teach with ICT in classrooms. Findings show that technological knowledge and access to ICT resources promote ICT integration, while limited infrastructure and lack of training hindered ICT integration.

Thesis:

Identity, and emergent counter-narratives of teachers of Afrikaans

Description:

This study on Afrikaans teachers’ being and belonging, using critical race theory, offers a decolonial interpretation of the current realities of language teaching. The relationship between Afrikaans and race represents inequalities embedded in language ideology. Teacher counter-narratives provided an alternative lens to examine pedagogical experiences. Findings reveal curriculum tensions between a dominant standardised Afrikaans and the excluded Kaaps and reflect struggles over power, identity and linguistic justice. The silence governing race and language teaching, particularly for subaltern communities, compromises teacher agency and learner achievement. Teacher voices are essential to disrupt norms and values that impede the transformational agenda of language-in-education.

Thesis:

Intermediate Phase teachers’ attitudes towards using technology in English First Additional Language classes at selected schools in low income communities in the Western Cape

Description:

This is a case study aimed at investigating teachers’ attitudes to ICT in low-income communities. The study utilised the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as its framework, highlighting ‘perceived ease of use’ and ‘perceived usefulness’ as key factors influencing technology adoption. The research involved interviews with IP teachers and SMT members as the main source of data generation. The findings demonstrate that, while many teachers expressed positive attitudes towards ICT, its actual use was conditional on perceptions of ease of use and usefulness. The study provides critical insights for stakeholders seeking to promote equitable, sustainable and effective ICT integration in disadvantaged educational settings, but particularly in the aftermath of Covid 19.

Access, barriers and successes of educational pathways for out of School youth. Applying the capability theory

Description:

The candidate’s study investigated the impact of a private, non-profit educational institution, on young people’s ability to access alternative post-school pathways. New theoretical insights were generated through detailing the relationship between the Capability Approach (CA) and Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) among youth at a post-school educational institution. The research contributes new knowledge by showing how a non-profit postschool institution can mediate capability growth, while emphasising that sustainable youth transitions require coordinated educational, labour market, and social policy responses.

UWC GRADUATION ATTIRE

MEANING AND SYMBOLISM

HEADER SUB-HEADER

The three proteas symbolise Teaching, Culture and Education.

The stepped pattern represents the steps that lead to the Greek temple. This is the international symbol for academia and our recognition that we are a part of it.

The laurel leaves indicate competition and victory.

The diamond-shaped protea petal represents strength of character, ethics and faithfulness to oneself and others.

The continuous pattern that extends from the front to the back speaks to Respice Prospice, which means to look back, to look forward. Take what is good from the past and build the future.

The beaded effect is meant to reflect African craft and creativity.

The colours that make up the band are derived from those that represent the seven Faculties that make up the University.
