MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR
HEADER SUB-HEADER
Welcome to this important day in the life of the University of the Western Cape. Today we celebrate you, our graduands, and we honour the discipline and perseverance that have brought you to this point. We also acknowledge those who have supported you along the way, especially your parents, guardians, families, friends and loved ones. Reaching this day has taken sacrifice and determination. For many of you, the journey has not been easy. There were pressures and moments of uncertainty. But you continued, and today we recognise what you have achieved.
You enter the world at a time of great complexity. Across the globe, many societies are living with conflict and socioeconomic strain. Many are also affected by division. Here in South Africa, we continue to face inequality, unemployment and the unfinished work of building a more just and inclusive society. These issues influence the daily lives of millions of people, especially those who continue to live on the margins. Yet there is still hope for humanity in those who continue to care for others and for the world we share.
That is why your education is so important. It is indeed for personal advancement, but it is also for service. It is part of the work of restoring dignity and widening opportunity. It is also for helping to build communities in which people can live with hope. Your degree is an achievement to be proud of, but it also comes with responsibility. As UWC graduates, you are part of a university guided by courage and critical thought. It is also a university with a strong sense of social purpose. Whatever path you follow from here, I hope that will remain with you. Use what you have learned with integrity. Do so with generosity and a clear sense of justice.
Ubuntu recognises that our lives are bound up with those of others. In a time when many people still feel excluded or unheard, that understanding still holds. The world needs graduates who are capable and thoughtful about how they use their knowledge and how their choices affect others. Congratulations on all that you have achieved. May you go forward with confidence and a sense of responsibility to others. God bless.
Daarom is jou opleiding so belangrik.
In ’n tyd wanneer baie mense steeds uitgesluit of ongehoord voel, geld daardie begrip steeds.

Dear Graduands,
MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR
HEADER SUB-HEADER
Few moments in university life speak more clearly to the purpose of higher education than graduation. It is a time to celebrate achievement. It is also a time to recognise discipline and perseverance, and to acknowledge the support of families, friends, lecturers and mentors who have walked this journey with you.
Your graduation comes at a time when South Africa, and the world, continue to face serious challenges. We are living through a period of socioeconomic pressure and technological change. It is also a period affected by conflict, persistent inequality and climate instability. We are living through a complex time in which public trust and social justice remain urgent concerns. These realities form part of the world you are entering as graduates. Amid these issues, it remains possible to act with purpose and to help build a better future.
For that reason, your qualification is significant both as a personal achievement and as a public good. A university education equips you with knowledge and skills. It also develops your judgement, your ethical sense and your capacity to work with others in addressing the challenges of our time. At UWC, we believe that higher education should prepare graduates who can think critically, act responsibly and contribute meaningfully to society.
You have reached this day through sacrifice and determination. Many of you had to overcome various obstacles. That experience will have influenced what you know and who you are becoming. The strength you have shown in completing this journey will serve you well. As UWC graduates, I hope you will take with you a strong sense of social purpose and thoughtful engagement. Use your education with purpose and in ways that widen opportunity for others. In a society still facing deep inequality, that responsibility should be taken seriously. Congratulations on your achievement. We wish you every success in the years ahead.
PROF ROBERT J. BALFOUR RECTOR AND VICE-CHANCELLOR UNIVERSITY OF THE WESTERN CAPE
Om daardie rede is jou kwalifikasie betekenisvol, beide as ’n persoonlike prestasie en as ’n openbare bate.

The promise of mutability or another turn in the widening gyre? The pursuit of transitional moments as refracted through South African Theatre and Iranian Theatre and Cinematography
Description:
Elham Hosseini’s comparative study explores connections between the work of seven South African playwrights and eight Iranian film makers in which the idea of transition is examined. The comparative approach provides a new understanding of the politics of culture and the culture of politics in both South African and Iranian contexts. The contrast between the generally explicit and spectacular aspects of South African theatre and dramatic literature and the more covert and allegorical modes associated with Iranian cinema, provides an innovative research platform by highlighting synergies and contrasts between the socio-political and cultural contexts in which the works were produced, as well as their thematic similarities in responding to the transitional process of the time.

From Surviving to Thriving: Strategies to navigate postgraduate education for academic woman of Colour, in the Design field
Description:
This study examines the challenges faced by womxn of colour pursuing postgraduate studies in design education in South Africa — a discipline shaped by Eurocentric, patriarchal, and colonial legacies. It explores how university culture perpetuates systemic violence and undermines the spiritual and emotional well-being of marginalised students, particularly those whose ancestors were displaced by apartheid. The study employs collaborative autoethnography and draws on decolonial, Black feminist theories, critical race theory and hydrofeminism. Working with ballet and ocean swimming as embodied metaphors for navigating academic pressures and violences, the study calls for a radical reimagining and decolonising of design education towards socially just academic environments, where all can flourish.

Next to nothing: A novel
Description:
Next to Nothing, portrays the struggles of three undocumented Zimbabweans during COVID-19. All came to South Africa in search of economic survival and political asylum, but they find themselves facing impossible odds during lockdown, when financial safety nets and government interventions, exclude them. The reflective component examines the myth of Ubuntu hospitality as well as the ongoing problems of institutional and casual xenophobia in South Africa. It asks how the unique imaginative strategies offered by fiction, might help to improve empathy towards ‘the other’, challenge dehumanising misconceptions around African migrants, and ultimately cause social and political change. This PhD makes an essential contribution to Zimbabwean diaspora literature, not just in South Africa, but globally.

A study of linguistic imperialism and forensic linguistic dynamics in selected Eastern Cape criminal courtrooms
Description:
This thesis investigates interpreter-mediated communication in criminal court proceedings involving isiXhosa-speaking participants. Situated at the intersection of Forensic Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Language Policy Studies, the study draws on theoretical perspectives from linguistic imperialism, language ideology, and interactional sociolinguistics. Particular attention is given to the role of court interpreters as active participants in legal interaction rather than neutral transmitters of speech. Using a qualitative discourse-analytic methodology, the research analyses a corpus of interpreter-mediated courtroom interactions alongside lawyer–client consultations prior to trial. The thesis advances theoretical debates in forensic linguistics by demonstrating how interpreter mediation functions as a site where institutional language ideologies and power relations become embedded in legal discourse.

A cloud-based knowledge management tool for small and medium microenterprises in the mining industry of the North West Province in South Africa
Description:
While they are the backbone of South Africa’s mining sector, SMMEs in the North West province often face operational stagnation due to fragmented knowledge management. These SMMEs provide ancillary services and products to the mines, boosting community livelihoods. This quantitative study, involving 120 owners and managers, addresses these challenges by examining cloud computing as a strategic enabler for knowledge transfer and retention. The study integrated the Technology–Organization–Environment framework with Ba theory to develop a model for the adoption of cloud-based KM, ensuring business continuity, sustainability, and competitiveness in a vital global industry.

Exploring accountability among male gender activists against gender-based violence in South Africa
Description:
The study examined how selected South African men engaged in gender-based violence prevention work negotiate accountability amidst the dominant framework of patriarchy and violent masculinity. The analysis of the qualitative interviews reveals gendered nuances embedded in their lived experiences of activism, how they challenge themselves to unlearn patriarchal norms and relations in order to be effective in their activism towards violence prevention and equitable gender relations. We are challenged to rethink accountability and engage with it as a relational, fluid, ethical, caring and as an everyday lived and negotiated practice. Existing approaches, assumptions and frameworks on men, masculinity, gendered violence, and male activism in violence prevention are also open to reconceptualisation.

The Namib, Kalahari and Karoo: Reading the desert in selected southern African literature
Description:
Dr Rawlins has expanded the horizon of African ecocriticism by studying literary representations of southern African deserts. Thus, the thesis inaugurates African desert humanities. The originality of the PhD is constituted significantly by the development of the concept of the garocentric , derived from an indigenous Khoikhoi root, meaning dry or arid. By the garocentric imaginary, Dr Rawlins captures the distinct range of genres, modes and media that emerge out of aridity. The stereotype of the desert as space of absence and lack is debunked. Instead, the desert is shown to be teeming with resilient life forms. It emerges as a place of physical and spiritual transformation, a deep space where cultural heritages are unearthed; and a globally connected space threatened by capitalist colonialist extractivism.

The impact of social media on undergraduate and postgraduatestudents’ academic writing in the Writing Centre at a University of Technology in South Africa
Description:
Ms Nkohla’s research is distinguished by its focused exploration of how social media use intersects with academic writing practices within the context of Writing Centre support. The findings reveal that both undergraduate and postgraduate students recognise the dual impact of social media on their academic writing, acknowledging its potential to support learning and writing practices while also promoting informal writing habits. However, the nature and complexity of these challenges vary, pointing to deeper systemic issues that call for more nuanced and digitally responsive academic literacy approaches in higher education. Within this context, the Writing Centre is uniquely positioned to play a bridging role by supporting students in navigating the shift between everyday social media writing practices and the conventions of academic discourse.

Fixedscapes, mobilescapes and the minibus taxi industry in Gauteng Province: A semiotic landscape analysis
Description:
The study analyses the minibus taxi industry in Gauteng Province as a dynamic semiotic space shaped by fixed and mobile landscapes. Drawing on a social semiotic approach to multimodality, it uses photographic documentation and interviews conducted around taxi ranks and urban hiking points. The findings show that landmarks, hand signs, oral cues, and soundscapes work together to support navigation, negotiation and social interaction. Oral communication remains central despite the presence of visible signage, supported by systematic non-verbal signalling. While English continues to dominate commercial signage, indigenous African languages play increasingly prominent roles in regulatory and communicative contexts. The study has implications for urban planning, language policy, and signage practices.

MEANING AND SYMBOLISM
HEADER SUB-HEADER
The three proteas symbolise Teaching, Culture and Education.
The stepped pattern represents the steps that lead to the Greek temple. This is the international symbol for academia and our recognition that we are a part of it.
The laurel leaves indicate competition and victory.
The diamond-shaped protea petal represents strength of character, ethics and faithfulness to oneself and others.
The continuous pattern that extends from the front to the back speaks to Respice Prospice, which means to look back, to look forward. Take what is good from the past and build the future.
The beaded effect is meant to reflect African craft and creativity.
The colours that make up the band are derived from those that represent the seven Faculties that make up the University.
