MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR
HEADER SUB-HEADER
Welcome to this important day in the life of the University of the Western Cape. Today we celebrate you, our graduands, and we honour the discipline and perseverance that have brought you to this point. We also acknowledge those who have supported you along the way, especially your parents, guardians, families, friends and loved ones. Reaching this day has taken sacrifice and determination. For many of you, the journey has not been easy. There were pressures and moments of uncertainty. But you continued, and today we recognise what you have achieved.
You enter the world at a time of great complexity. Across the globe, many societies are living with conflict and socioeconomic strain. Many are also affected by division. Here in South Africa, we continue to face inequality, unemployment and the unfinished work of building a more just and inclusive society. These issues influence the daily lives of millions of people, especially those who continue to live on the margins. Yet there is still hope for humanity in those who continue to care for others and for the world we share.
That is why your education is so important. It is indeed for personal advancement, but it is also for service. It is part of the work of restoring dignity and widening opportunity. It is also for helping to build communities in which people can live with hope. Your degree is an achievement to be proud of, but it also comes with responsibility. As UWC graduates, you are part of a university guided by courage and critical thought. It is also a university with a strong sense of social purpose. Whatever path you follow from here, I hope that will remain with you. Use what you have learned with integrity. Do so with generosity and a clear sense of justice.
Ubuntu recognises that our lives are bound up with those of others. In a time when many people still feel excluded or unheard, that understanding still holds. The world needs graduates who are capable and thoughtful about how they use their knowledge and how their choices affect others. Congratulations on all that you have achieved. May you go forward with confidence and a sense of responsibility to others. God bless.
Daarom is jou opleiding so belangrik.
In ’n tyd wanneer baie mense steeds uitgesluit of ongehoord voel, geld daardie begrip steeds.

Dear Graduands,
MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR
HEADER SUB-HEADER
Few moments in university life speak more clearly to the purpose of higher education than graduation. It is a time to celebrate achievement. It is also a time to recognise discipline and perseverance, and to acknowledge the support of families, friends, lecturers and mentors who have walked this journey with you.
Your graduation comes at a time when South Africa, and the world, continue to face serious challenges. We are living through a period of socioeconomic pressure and technological change. It is also a period affected by conflict, persistent inequality and climate instability. We are living through a complex time in which public trust and social justice remain urgent concerns. These realities form part of the world you are entering as graduates. Amid these issues, it remains possible to act with purpose and to help build a better future.
For that reason, your qualification is significant both as a personal achievement and as a public good. A university education equips you with knowledge and skills. It also develops your judgement, your ethical sense and your capacity to work with others in addressing the challenges of our time. At UWC, we believe that higher education should prepare graduates who can think critically, act responsibly and contribute meaningfully to society.
You have reached this day through sacrifice and determination. Many of you had to overcome various obstacles. That experience will have influenced what you know and who you are becoming. The strength you have shown in completing this journey will serve you well. As UWC graduates, I hope you will take with you a strong sense of social purpose and thoughtful engagement. Use your education with purpose and in ways that widen opportunity for others. In a society still facing deep inequality, that responsibility should be taken seriously. Congratulations on your achievement. We wish you every success in the years ahead.
PROF ROBERT J. BALFOUR RECTOR AND VICE-CHANCELLOR UNIVERSITY OF THE WESTERN CAPE
Om daardie rede is jou kwalifikasie betekenisvol, beide as ’n persoonlike prestasie en as ’n openbare bate.

Culture, crisis and epistemicide: What Southern African communities can teach the world about living in an age of crisis
Description:
Knowledge systems have created extreme depravation while simultaneously it has created extreme wealth for a few. While these defects are not unique to the dominant knowledge system there may be something unique about the problems incurred by this particular knowledge system. By learning from elders in the Southern African community often known as “Khoi-San”, this dissertation documents that there are other ways of understanding land tenure, property rights and human relations. By learning from the Southern African Knowledge System (SAKS) progressive people can propose and implement reforms to the CKS which would ultimately result in a world where human rights are not just rhetoric but part of a universal social contract.

Redefining the roles and relationships of men in their families and communities during Covid-19: A time of crisis in Ocean View, Cape Town
Description:
In his thesis, Redefining the roles and relationships of men in their families and communities during Covid-19: A time of crisis in Ocean View, Cape Town, a social construction lens is used to explore the redefinition of men’s family relationships. Disruptions during the pandemic highlighted vulnerabilities and shifting dynamics affecting employment and men’s perceived provider roles. This qualitative study involved 25 semi-structured interviews with men which uncovered tensions between evolving masculinities with increased domestic responsibilities and persisting patriarchal structures. Within Ocean View’s history of marginalisation, the study contributes to understanding how crises can be catalysts to renegotiate gender identities and reach more equitable gendered power relations.

Under the Hanging Tree: Everyday Life and Historical Memory in Central Namibia
Description:
This practice-based thesis explores inter-generational trauma arising from the Herero genocide in central Namibia under German rule. The feature film that accompanies the historical research brings us into an acoustic, visual and cinematic encounter with multisensory memory attached to landscape and storytelling. The duality of the leadwood tree, Omumborombonga in otjiHerero, arises from its centrality to traditions of origin where the tree gave birth to Herero progenitors many centuries ago and yet served as the gallows in the wake of General von Trotha’s Extermination Order in 1904. Under this hanging tree, Perivi Katjavivi’s long camera takes make for a new archive with script, actors and audiences, while his microphone engenders new theories of an acousmatic life force.

Rethinking organic waste: An investigation into urban food waste practices in two neighbourhoods of Cape Town
Description:
This study examines food waste generation, disposal, and management among low- and middle-income households in Cape Town, South Africa, using urban political ecology (UPE) framework to analyse socio-economic, spatial, and infrastructural factors. A mixed-methods approach, using both qualitative and quantitative research, was used to collect primary data. The findings reveal considerable differences in the socio-economic profiles of the study areas as well as in household food waste generation and management practices. These results are relevant for policymakers and urban planners seeking to develop targeted interventions and policies to improve food waste management in comparable urban contexts. This thesis contributes to the scholarship on urban solid waste management in South Africa and presents recommendations and policy options to improve food waste management.

Embodied care pathways: Feminist restorative therapeutic approaches for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse in marginalised contexts
Description:
Extensive research has shown that childhood sexual trauma can affect people well into adulthood, shaping their emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Yet access to care after such trauma is often difficult in under-resourced Cape Flats communities still shaped by apartheid injustice. In her PhD, clinical psychologist Leona Morgan worked closely with 13 adult women survivors of childhood sexual abuse, listening deeply to their experiences. Her findings, published in four leading international journals, show that healing does not happen through biomedical treatment alone, but through community support, faith, and safe spaces where survivors’ embodied experiences are honoured. In a country where gender-based violence has been labelled a shadow pandemic, her research calls for policies that support community-based and culturally meaningful care for survivors.
The degree is jointly conferred by the University of the Western Cape and Ghent University.

The expulsion of Igbo people from Equatorial Guinea: 1950-1979
Description:
The thesis explores a largely understudied history of a labour migration in West Africa that traverses the period of Spanish colonial rule in the island of Fernando Po through to independence of the nation-state that became known as Equatorial Guinea of which it is a part. The through a combination of archival research and a re-reading of existing studies, the thesis outlines the context of mostly Igbo migration during the colonial period, and the subsequent expulsion of this migrant group under the postindependence rule of Francisco Macias Nguema. The study chronologically traces the paradigm shifts in the policies the postcolonial leadership, demonstrating the continuities of styles of rule inherited from the Spanish colonial period, offering new insights on this history.

That night, this life: Essays from a South African story
Description:
Gillian Rennie’s PhD thesis, That Night, This Life: Essays from a South African Story, is a blend of creative non-fiction, life writing, memory studies and literary investigation. It comprises a collection of essays based on the life of Neville Beling who was shot and permanently injured in a political attack on the Highgate Hotel in East London in 1993. Rennie uses the literary genre of the essay to reveal shifting truths in the broad narrative of South African history. She draws on theories of performativity and affect as they relate to the role of a personal narrator. Inhabiting this role on the page raises complex ethical considerations, which she investigates through practice. In so doing, Rennie invigorates new ways of understanding ethical narrative practice and ethnography

UWC GRADUATION ATTIRE
MEANING AND SYMBOLISM
HEADER SUB-HEADER
The three proteas symbolise Teaching, Culture and Education.
The stepped pattern represents the steps that lead to the Greek temple. This is the international symbol for academia and our recognition that we are a part of it.
The laurel leaves indicate competition and victory.
The diamond-shaped protea petal represents strength of character, ethics and faithfulness to oneself and others.
The continuous pattern that extends from the front to the back speaks to Respice Prospice, which means to look back, to look forward. Take what is good from the past and build the future.
The beaded effect is meant to reflect African craft and creativity.
The colours that make up the band are derived from those that represent the seven Faculties that make up the University.
