Eligibility: Businesses registered and operating in Vermont are eligible to submit applications to this grant program. The goal of the Vermont EPSCoR Phase (0) grant program is to support business or industry projects that have a strong potential for success in federal SBIR/STTR competitions. Specifically, the program is intended to support preliminary proof-of-concept feasibility studies in preparation for federal SBIR/STTR applications. This grant program is jointly funded by NSF and NASA with one award expected in an area of interest to NASA. Informational Webinar: The Vermont EPSCoR Office will hold an informational webinar on December 4, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. The purpose of the webinar is to review program requirements, recommend application strategies for success and address questions. Advance registration is not required.

LEARN THE SKILLS. BUILD THE FUTURE.

For more information and event updates, scan this QR code: Funding provided by NSF OIA 2242829 The EPSCoR funding has allowed SpikeSense to assemble an early proof-of-concept and initially explore the capabilities and potential performance of our hyperspectral imaging approach, something we would not have been able to do without it. The early assembly and testing of the proof-of-concept provides clarity and highlights the key areas that need significant R&D in order to move ahead to a full prototype and then product. This clarity is strengthening our proposals to government agencies and other funding sources as we move forward. — Dr. Eric Gallo, SpikeSense Labs owner

Real Jobs. Real People. Saturday, October 24, at Hula in Burlington GET FREE TICKETS AT TECHJAMVT.COM.

W

hen applying for or posting a job these days, you never know if you’re interacting with an AI agent or a real person. Worse: Sometimes those AI entities aren’t who they appear to be. Scam jobs and scam applicants confuse employers and job seekers alike. One way to avoid this scenario? Meet in person and make a connection at the Vermont Tech Jam. This annual career and technology expo is the only time you’ll get to see local employers, entrepreneurs, a résumé coach and STEMprepped students all under one roof. At the Tech Jam, you can: • Talk with 40-plus exhibitors, many of whom are hiring. • Meet representatives from companies making tangible products — think BETA Technologies, Hazelett and Rigorous — at the 11 a.m. presentation. FILE PHOTOS: SAM SIMON

• Check out demonstrations from Vermont’s studentpowered FIRST robotics teams and learn about Burlington-based Hack Club, run by and for teens from across the country. • Consider going back to school: Representatives from the University of Vermont, Community College of Vermont, Champlain College, Norwich University and Vermont State University will be on hand to explain your options. • See a 1 p.m. presentation and interview with Hany Farid, a Dartmouth professor recently featured in the New York Times, who explains how advances in AI are making it difficult to spot deepfakes.

Our Hosts at Hula

A hub for remote workers and businesses, a venue for events

W

hen it first started, the Vermont Tech Jam changed locations every year — from Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center to the Champlain Mill to Memorial Auditorium. It wasn’t until 2021 that the Jam landed at the perfect home: the Hula coworking campus and innovation hub in Burlington. The 14-acre lakefront property, once owned by Blodgett Ovens, consists of several buildings, including the Burlington Surf Club. The crown jewel, Building 50, was once home to the factory floor. Today this two-story space is suffused with natural light, accentuated with an abundance of greenery, and powered by renewable energy, including geothermal heating and cooling. Tenants such as Accessible Web, Glavel Want a guided tour? and OhMD have offices there, while Hula is offering three remote workers share desks, counters, 20-minute sessions, sofas, conference rooms, a kitchen and with information about soundproof privacy pods — as well as coworking memberships, breathtaking views of Lake Champlain. at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 Hula is also home to an in-house venture and 2:30 p.m. To join one, fund investing in Vermont-based meet at the fountain. companies. Tying it all together is an easygoing surfer vibe. For the sixth year, Tech Jam exhibitors will set up in “the channel” in Building 50. FIRST robotics teams will be in “Isthmus.” Presentations will take place in “Reef.”

Totally Unreal

How Deepfakes Are Changing Everything With Hany Farid

A

I-generated images, video and audio clips that masquerade as real are easier to make than ever before, and they’re becoming more and more convincing. These “deepfakes” are duping people, especially on social media. Even digital forensics professionals have a hard time distinguishing what’s real from what’s not. Case in point: Hany Farid. In June, the New York Times published a profile of the computer science professor declaring that “The World’s Leading Deepfake Expert No

Longer Trusts His Own Eyes.” Farid recently left his teaching position at the University of California in Berkeley, bought a farm in Vermont and rejoined the faculty of Dartmouth College, where he taught from 1999 to 2019. Farid is also a cofounder of GetReal Security, where he’s the chief science officer. The firm specializes in authentication and verification of digital media. One of the posts on the GetReal website warns recruiters to be wary of virtual interviews, because candidates can now

conceal their identity. Called “Anatomy of an AI Imposter: Inside a Hiring Scam,” it details how a man interviewing for a remote-work job almost fooled an employer. The interviewer, who had a background in Asian languages, realized the supposedly Polish candidate had a Korean accent. When called out on it, the candidate quickly ended the call. In fact, according to Farid, this is a common occurrence. A few weeks ago he appeared in a 10-minute segment on “CBS News Sunday Morning” titled “Detecting Deepfakes, In

a World Where Even Reality Is Suspect.” He discussed these hiring scams, in which American employers accidentally hire tech workers from North Korea. Farid told reporter Ted Koppel, “Just about every single Fortune 500 company has hired one or more of these, whether they know it or not.” At the Tech Jam, Farid will do a short presentation about the state of deepfakes and our ability to detect and combat them, followed by an interview with Seven Days staff writer Hannah Bassett. He’ll also take questions from the audience.
