CUS MAKE STRONG START IN VINNIE MURRAY CUP January 12, 2017 / 6:03 pm / Site Editor

Catholic University School cruised into the Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Vinnie Murray Senior Cup second round at Donnybrook on Thursday. The feeling out process didn’t last too long, despite the prominence of St Conleth’s centre Ross Murphy and flanker Oisin Allen. A sizzling surge from CUS prop Harry Opperman opened the way for a fine finish by right wing Kevin Minihane which was expertly converted from the touchline by captain David O’Leary in the eighth minute. It was centre Liam Howley who carved out the second for flanker Eoin McLoughlin, and number eight Adam Fleming followed suit for O’Leary’s third conversion in the 22th minute.

Any doubt about the outcome was removed when hooker Jacob Maguire burst over and Fleming provided the fifth from close range in the 46th minute. Centre Dylan Collum dived in for the next one for replacement Ronan O’Leary to convert not long after St Conleth’s came agonisingly close to breaking back. Hooker Maguire drove over for the seventh before St Conleth’s finally breached the barrier to their first try through prop Mati Remi for wing Gavin Nugent to make it 47-7 from the conversion. Out-half David O’Leary guided CUS into the Bank of Ireland Vinnie Murray Cup semi-final at Donnybrook on Wednesday. This was an example of how all the raw talent in the world can’t make up for the well-drilled coaching and organisation that comes with the day-in, day-out dedication to any sport. It was clear Good Counsel, a renowned gaelic games nursery, were blessed with quality in their centres Mikey Dwyer and Morgan Purcell and number eight Daniel Murphy. They just lacked the cohesion to cause CUS enough problems at the ruck and the set-piece where practice can make almost perfect. Gradually, the Dublin school got into its patterns of play for their captain O’Leary to strike a 13th minute penalty and convert a try from full-back Ronan O’Leary, showing lovely evasion skills in the 23rd minute. The killer blow came just before the break when David O’Leary dived over under the posts, got up and added the extras for 17-0 at the interval. From there, the New Ross boys had to be credited with never lying down as their individual flashes were undone by the winner’s collective work, led by number eight Adam Fleming and the influential O’Leary.

His second penalty was improved by a penalty try when wing Liam Stafford got back to hold Fleming up over the line in an exceptional piece of defence. Referee Susan Carty arrived on the scene to award a penalty try for a high tackle. Out-half O’Leary kicked the conversion and shot a late penalty to conclude business for the evening. Read the preview for the Bank of Ireland Vinnie Murray Cup semi-final between Kilkenny College and CUS (Wednesday, Donnybrook, 2pm). Kilkenny College had to absorb the disappointment of not making it directly into the Senior Cup through the League and refocus on the Vinnie Murray. It may be no bad thing as they have had the chance to build form and cohesion from their quarter-final against Wilson’s Hospital. Kilkenny looked very impressive in putting down eight tries with the direct approach of number eight Reuben Pim, flanker Stuart Dudley and hooker Stephen Gray backed up by the balance of out-half Josh Miller’s tactical appreciation. The outstanding presence of the serious gas on the outside of wings Tamalori Awonusi and, in particular, Luke Sonilenla, an impressive physical specimen, is an exciting outlet for their attacking strategy. CUS are well-coached by former British & Irish Lion Eric Miller in dishing up 77 points in their first two

rounds for the concession of just seven. The defence and attack are working in relative harmony as number eight Adam Fleming leads them in both areas. The cool play-making of their captain David O’Leary is at the core of what they do well, moving forward with a clear plan. Prop Harry Opperman, hooker Jacob Maguire, flanker Sean Mullen and Fleming should not be underestimated in what is a unit in which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
