Dear TGO Community, On September 3, we held our quarterly Employee Appreciation Luncheon. Our team gathered for an informative wildlife safety presentation from Alligator Robb, followed by a wonderful lunch. You’ll find a recap of the luncheon inside. Congratulations to Nolan Barry on being our Employee of the Quarter! Nolan has worked on the golf course for the past six years while attending the University of Central Florida. This summer, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. We are incredibly proud of Nolan’s accomplishments and grateful for his years of hard work, dedication, and service to TGO. Please join us in congratulating Nolan on this well-deserved recognition! Our teams are fully engaged in detailed preparations for the upcoming season while continuing to manage the challenges Mother Nature has brought over the past few weeks. Despite the unpredictable weather, our staff has remained focused and is working hard to ensure our community is ready to welcome back our seasonal residents. As you travel throughout the community, you will notice landscaping improvements taking place. A considerable number of new plants are around the Pavilion, the putting green, and behind the Blue Heron. These landscaping enhancements are improving the appearance of these highly visible areas and create a more welcoming environment for our residents and guests. In addition to the new landscaping, our teams continue to perform routine maintenance, property cleanup, and other seasonal preparations throughout the community. We appreciate everyone’s patience while this work is underway and thank our employees for their continued work. We look forward to completing these improvements and having the community looking its best for the upcoming season. We are pleased to announce that the new pavers for the Manor Pool improvement project have arrived. Installation is set to begin during the week of September 21. The project is expected to take two to four weeks to complete. This may vary depending on weather conditions and any unforeseen circumstances that could affect the installation schedule. During construction, residents will notice increased activity, equipment, and temporary disruptions around the Manor, tennis courts, and fitness areas. Please use caution when near the work zone and follow any posted signs or temporary access restrictions. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation while this project is underway. We look forward to providing residents with a refreshed and improved pool area. Best regards,

Uphill and Downhill Lies: Just Change the Setup We may not have many hills at The Great Outdoors, but when your ball comes to rest on one, here’s how to conquer it with a simple setup adjustment.
Uphill Lies: Narrow Your Stance On an uphill lie, narrow your stance slightly. This helps you push off your right foot sooner, allowing your body to work “up the hill” through the ball. A stance that is too wide can make it difficult to move forward and leave you stuck on your trail side. Downhill Lies: Widen Your Stance On a downhill lie, widen your stance slightly. The wider base helps keep you from standing up too early, allowing your body to work down through the ball. Maintain your posture and resist the urge to lift the ball into the air. Remember: narrow to work up the hill, widen to work down the hill. Let your setup help you make your normal swing. Top: Uphill Lie - A slightly narrower stance helps you shift forward and swing naturally up the slope through the ball. Bottom: Downhill Lie - A slightly wider stance provides stability, helping you maintain your posture and swing down through the ball.

Meet Nolan Barry - TGO Employee of the Quarter For the past six years, Nolan Barry has been part of the team that keeps TGO’s golf course looking its best and ready for play each day. His dedication and hard work have now earned him recognition as TGO’s newest Employee of the Quarter. Nolan’s workday begins long before most residents are thinking about their first tee time. He and the rest of the golf course crew arrive at 5:30 each morning, taking advantage of the early hours to prepare the course for the day ahead. His responsibilities include mowing, daily course setup and the many other jobs necessary to maintain the golf course. By the time the first golfers are making their way around the course, Nolan and his coworkers have already put in several hours of work. Nolan came to TGO six years ago after the outdoor recreation school where he had been working closed. Needing a new job, he found himself choosing between two opportunities - Home Depot or the TGO golf course. Fortunately for TGO, he chose the golf course. Originally from New Hampshire, Nolan moved to Florida when he was 18 and now lives in Mims with his wife, who is a Montessori school teacher in Ocoee. When he isn’t working, Nolan enjoys spending time outdoors, particularly fishing. He frequently fishes the Indian River and also enjoys playing golf, watching movies and reading.
But there’s another side to Nolan’s story that many people at TGO may not know. While working at the golf course, Nolan has also been pursuing his college education. He began his studies at Eastern Florida State College before transferring to the University of Central Florida. Just three weeks before being interviewed for this article, Nolan completed his degree in mechanical engineering. Completing an engineering degree while maintaining an early-morning work schedule is quite an accomplishment. Nolan’s typical workday begins at 5:30am and ends around 1:30pm, requiring him to balance his responsibilities at TGO with the demands of his education. That determination and work ethic are qualities Nolan has also brought to the golf course throughout his six years at TGO. Whether he is helping prepare the course before sunrise, or working toward his own goals away from TGO, Nolan has demonstrated the kind of dedication that makes his selection as Employee of the Quarter well deserved. Congratulations to Nolan Barry, and thank you for everything you do to help keep TGO’s golf course looking great.

Featuring Special Guest Speaker Alligator Robb When it comes to alligators, few people know them quite like Frank “Alligator” Robb. A longtime Florida wildlife professional and crocodilian specialist, Robb has spent decades working hands-on with alligators while helping communities better understand these powerful, and often misunderstood animals. His expertise has taken him well beyond Florida. Robb gained national attention in 2019 when he successfully captured “Chance the Snapper,” an alligator discovered in Chicago’s Humboldt Park Lagoon. But much of his work remains focused right here in Florida, where encounters between people and alligators are simply part of life. Robb’s approach combines experience, research, education and respect for the animal. He emphasizes understanding alligator behavior and learning how people can safely share the environment with them. Robb visited The Great Outdoors as guest speaker at our quarterly Employee Meeting, providing excellent information about the alligators, turtles and snakes that share our lakes, ponds and waterways.
“Alligator” Robb’s recent visit to The Great Outdoors gave our employees an up-close look at some of Florida’s most fascinating wildlife, and a few creatures most of us would rather not encounter unexpectedly. Robb began his presentation by introducing a collection of live animals, including approximately six types of snakes, four varieties of turtles and, of course, alligators. He discussed each animal, explaining how to identify different species and which ones could pose a danger. With the snakes, he talked about recognizing venomous species, what to do if someone is bitten and, just as importantly, what not to do. The presentation eventually turned to Robb’s specialty - alligators. Using photographs and videos along with his live animals, he explained the difference between normal alligator behavior and behavior that should raise concern. One interesting example involved maintenance work around lakes and ponds. Robb explained that the sound and vibration of equipment such as weed trimmers can sometimes attract an alligator. A gator approaching that activity isn’t necessarily displaying aggression. However, an alligator that continues following a person as they move away is a different situation and should be treated with caution. Robb also demonstrated how alligators respond to certain sounds. In one video, he used a particular call to coax an alligator from a swimming pool, showing just how responsive these animals can be to sound and vibration. Perhaps the most memorable part of the program came when Robb took the animals around the room, allowing employees to see them at close range. The progression went from small snakes to considerably larger ones, followed by turtles and alligators. Some attendees even had the opportunity to hold a young alligator. The program offered more than a close encounter with wildlife. It provided useful information about understanding - and safely working alongside our wild neighbors.

Around Brevard County... Bowen Aquarium Moves Closer to Reality
After years of planning, Brevard County’s long-awaited Bowen Aquarium is moving closer to becoming a reality at Port Canaveral. The East Coast Zoological Foundation, which also operates Brevard Zoo, has announced an official groundbreaking date of December 2, 2026. The $140 million aquarium and conservation center will be built on 14 acres along the Banana River at Port Canaveral. Aquarium officials say construction is expected to take approximately 24 to 30 months, followed by additional time to allow the animals to acclimate to their new homes. That puts a likely opening sometime in 2029, although an official opening date has not yet been announced. The project’s design is now complete, and PCL has been selected as construction manager. However, some important details still need to be finalized. In August, aquarium officials reported that modifications to the lease agreement with the Canaveral Port Authority were still being worked out, with approval targeted for September. The lease is an important part of completing the project’s financing. Bowen Aquarium will be much more than a collection of large fish tanks. The facility will focus heavily on Florida wildlife and the Indian River Lagoon, featuring species such as bull sharks, sea turtles, river otters, stingrays and American alligators. Plans also include facilities for sea turtle and manatee rehabilitation, research and education, along with a working seagrass nursery. Fundraising also continues. Earlier this year, $74 million had been secured toward the $140 million goal, and the aquarium’s current fundraising website indicates the campaign has now reached approximately 57 percent. Once completed, Bowen Aquarium is expected to welcome more than 500,000 visitors annually, creating another major destination for Florida’s Space Coast while placing conservation of our local waterways at the center of the experience.
Brightline is Coming to the Space Coast
In August, the Federal Railroad Administration selected the Cocoa Multimodal Station and Rail Project for approximately $57.5 million in federal funding, a major step toward final design and construction. The station is planned near US 1, SR 528 and Clearlake Road in Cocoa. The project will include a new passenger station, parking and circulation areas, along with approximately four miles of additional double railroad track. Brightline will partner with the City of Cocoa to construct the station and is expected to operate and maintain it. Officials are currently targeting completion around 2030, although an official opening date has not been announced. For Titusville and TGO residents, the Cocoa station will provide a convenient new way to travel throughout Florida. Passengers will be able to board in Brevard County and travel west to Orlando International Airport or south to West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Aventura and Miami. The station could also provide an important boost to North Brevard tourism. The planned location is approximately 17 miles from Kennedy Space Center and 10 miles from Port Canaveral, potentially bringing more visitors into the Space Coast and Titusville area. The Space Coast is now one major step closer to having a passenger rail connection of its own.

Wildfires are no longer a distant, seasonal threat — they are a year‑round reality for millions of Americans living in the wildland–urban interface (WUI). As development expands into forested and brush‑covered areas, the risk grows not only from natural ignition sources like lightning but also from everyday human activity. Fortunately, decades of research show that wildfire disasters are not inevitable. With the right strategies, homes and communities can dramatically reduce their vulnerability. This article explains the science behind home ignition, outlines practical steps for homeowners, and highlights community‑level programs like Firewise USA®, which help neighborhoods work together to reduce risk. Understanding How Wildfires Actually Ignite Homes One of the most important findings from wildfire science — including research by Dr. Jack Cohen of the U.S. Forest Service — is that wildfires do not typically “engulf everything in their path.” Instead, homes ignite when conditions around them meet the requirements for combustion. That means: • Wind‑driven embers are the primary threat, often traveling miles ahead of the flame front. • Vegetation type, spacing, and quantity determine whether flames can reach a structure. • Building materials and maintenance influence whether embers can ignite vulnerable points. This science is the foundation of the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) concept, which focuses on the home and the surrounding 0–100 feet. Improvements in this zone have been shown to significantly increase the chances of home survival during a wildfire event. Here in TGO we concentrate primarily on the 30 foot Defensible Zone. How Homeowners Can Reduce Wildfire Risk 1. Harden the Home Itself Fire-resistant construction and regular maintenance make a major difference: • Use Class A fire‑rated roofing materials. • Install ember‑resistant vents. • Replace single‑pane windows with tempered glass. • Keep roofs, gutters, and decks clear of leaves and debris. 2. Manage Vegetation in the Home Ignition Zone The goal is to reduce fuel continuity and eliminate places where embers can accumulate. • 0 to 5 feet (Immediate Zone): This is the most critical area. Keep it non‑combustible. • Rock mulch instead of wood mulch • No shrubs or flammable plants touching the home. 5 to 30 feet (Intermediate Zone or Defensible Zone) • Space plants so fire cannot easily spread between them. Trim branches away from structures Remember… • Maintain lawns and remove dead vegetation. Be Firewise, Be Safe! 30 to 100 feet (Extended Zone): Thin dense vegetation. TGO has dense wooded areas that consist mainly of Brazilian Pepper Trees which are considered fire resistant and prevent most plants from growing under them. This hinders fire spread along the ground. ARC Guidelines 32.2.8 and 43 provide guidance and direction in this area, always consult these guidelines and your ARC representative before doing any work. Create breaks using driveways, paths, or hardscape. Again, consult the ARC Guidelines and your ARC representative before doing any work or making any changes. Clean up fallen branches and ladder fuels. These practices align with Firewise USA® recommendations and have been shown to reduce home destruction during wildfire events. Why Wildfire Safety Matters More Than Ever Wildfires are becoming more intense, more frequent, and more destructive. But the data is clear: homes and communities that take proactive steps fare dramatically better. Firewise USA® sites show strong retention, long‑term engagement, and measurable reductions in risk. Wildfire safety is not about eliminating fire — it is about adapting to it. With thoughtful planning, resilient building practices, and community coordination, residents can protect lives, property, and the natural ecosystems they call home. A Final Word Wildfire safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you are a homeowner clearing debris from your gutters or a community leader organizing a Firewise committee, every action contributes to a safer, more resilient neighborhood.

BETTY SALTER TAKES THE HELM AS NATURE CENTER PRESIDENT

The Nature Center at The Great Outdoors is pleased to announce Betty Salter as the center’s new president. Betty brings a wealth of knowledge, personal contacts and experience to the Nature Center, with an impressive background in education, wildlife knowledge, and groundbreaking work at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. Here at TGO she dedicates tireless work as a TGO Wildlife Rescue and Nature Center Trail Guide, and spent years rescuing wildlife at TGO and the surrounding area. She has also led the Nature Center Trail hikes every Monday and Wednesday during “the season” for over 10 years.

Betty realizes many of our TGO residents work during the week, and she hopes to have Saturday morning hikes and more weekend programs. A true life-learner, Betty’s passion is to share the joy of nature with others, whether it’s knowledge of plants, wildlife, wildlife rescue and preservation, or simply the general love of being outdoors.
A DEDICATED VOLUNTEER
Betty’s career began in education, where she was with the school board and an exceptional education teacher assistant. In 1999 she began working for Parks and Recreation, North Area Parks Operation Office, where she initiated many innovative programs. She and her late husband Cary retired in February 2008. Betty has devoted over 7,000 hours of volunteer time to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. A friend at the refuge encouraged her to consider living in TGO. Betty and Cary moved to The Great Outdoors in October of 2014, and immediately became immersed with The Nature Center. Betty had known Sandy Juba for some time, as Sandy volunteered at the refuge as well. Their great friendship and desire to rescue and teach others about wildlife and nature took off from there. Betty jokes that one of the first steps to get involved with wildlife rescue, at Sandy’s insistence, was to overcome her fear of snakes. After researching snakes for many months and creating brochures about them, she overcame her fears, and has frequently rescued many of them! She also became very active with Firewise. Betty initiated the Spring Festival at the Nature Center. She previously developed large festivals for the county and wanted to develop a smaller festival here. Sandy Juba gave Betty a list of local vendors to contact, and the annual festival was launched, continues to grow and become a fund raiser for the center.

NATIVE FLORA AND FAUNA
Betty’s nature expertise includes extensive studies of native Florida plants and insects. One of her many butterfly studies led to the discovery of new species not known to our area. (The Variegated Fritillary was not known to be in Brevard County and the Eastern Pygmy Blue was not expected to be west of I-95 but we have it in the marsh here!) Betty’s goals are to develop programs to get more people involved with the nature center’s hikes, displays and talks.

The Birds of Prey of TGO
One of the most exciting parts of living in The Great Outdoors RV & Golf Resort is sharing our skies, woods, and wetlands with some of Florida’s most impressive birds of prey. Whether soaring high overhead, silently hunting at dusk, or perched quietly watching from a pine tree, these raptors are a powerful reminder that nature is thriving all around us. Birds of prey play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. They help control rodents, insects, fish populations, and even clean the environment by removing carrion. Each species has its own unique hunting style, habitat, and purpose in nature’s balance.
Bald Eagle
The Bald Eagle remains one of America’s most powerful symbols and a true conservation success story. These magnificent birds are commonly seen throughout Brevard County near lakes, wetlands, and rivers. Eagles build massive nests that they often reuse and expand year after year. Seeing one soaring above TGO or perched near water is always a breathtaking experience and a reminder of how far wildlife conservation has come.

Osprey
The Osprey is one of the most recognizable raptors around TGO’s lakes and waterways. Often called the “fish hawk,” these birds specialize almost entirely in catching fish. Watching an osprey hover before diving feet-first into the water is one of the most incredible sights in Florida wildlife. Their reversible outer toes and sharp talons help them grip slippery fish while carrying them headfirst through the air for better aerodynamics.
Red-tailed Hawk
Broad-winged and powerful, the Red-tailed Hawk is often seen soaring high over open areas searching for prey below. Their sharp eyesight allows them to spot movement from incredible distances. They are among Florida’s top daytime predators and play an important role in balancing rodent populations. Photos by Chad Avian
Red-shouldered Hawk
The Red-shouldered Hawk is one of the most commonly heard hawks in wooded Florida neighborhoods. Their loud whistling screams echo through trees and often alert residents before the bird is even spotted. These hawks hunt rodents, snakes, frogs, insects, and small mammals while helping naturally control pest populations.
Cooper’s Hawk
Fast, agile, and incredibly skilled, Cooper’s Hawks are specialists at hunting smaller birds through trees and tight spaces. They are commonly seen darting quickly through wooded areas and sometimes surprising backyard feeder birds. Their speed and maneuverability make them one of the most efficient hunters in our area.

The Birds of Prey of TGO Great Horned Owl
The Great Horned Owl is one of the largest and most powerful owls found in Central Florida. These impressive nighttime hunters are recognized by their large yellow eyes and distinctive feathered “horns.” They prey on rodents, rabbits, birds, snakes, and other small animals. Great Horned Owls usually spend the daylight hours resting quietly in tall trees, making them difficult to spot. Around TGO, listen after dark for their deep, familiar hooting calls coming from wooded areas, especially around dusk and early morning.
American Kestrel
The American Kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America and one of the most colorful. These tiny raptors are often seen perched on utility wires or fence posts while searching for insects, lizards, and mice. Despite their small size, kestrels are fierce hunters and incredibly fast flyers.

Swallow-tailed Kite
The Swallow-tailed Kite is one of the most graceful and easily recognized birds of prey found in Florida. Its striking black-and-white coloring and deeply forked tail make it unmistakable in flight. These agile raptors spend much of their time soaring overhead, catching insects and small prey. Around TGO, they are most often seen during the spring and summer months.
Barred Owl
The Barred Owl is one of the most beloved nighttime birds in Florida woods. Their famous call often sounds like they are asking, “Who cooks for you?” These large owls hunt rodents, frogs, insects, and small animals, helping keep nighttime prey populations balanced. Hearing a Barred Owl calling through the trees at night is one of the magical sounds of living close to nature.
Eastern Screech Owl
Small and beautifully camouflaged, the Eastern Screech Owl often goes completely unnoticed despite living close to homes and neighborhoods. These tiny owls nest in tree cavities and hunt insects, rodents, and small reptiles after dark. Their soft trills and haunting nighttime calls are often heard more than the birds are seen.
Turkey Vulture
Turkey Vultures are among nature’s cleanup crew and are far more important than people realize. They are easily distinguished by their red heads. Using an extraordinary sense of smell, they locate carrion and help prevent the spread of disease by removing dead animals from the environment. Their soaring flight with wings held in a shallow “V” shape makes them easy to recognize.
Black Vulture
Smaller and darker than Turkey Vultures, Black Vultures are highly social birds often seen gathering in groups. Unlike Turkey Vultures, they rely more on eyesight than smell to locate food. Together, both vulture species perform an essential service in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Why Birds of Prey Matter Raptors are essential to healthy ecosystems. They remove weak or sick prey, control rodent and insect populations, clean the environment, and help maintain natural balance. They are also indicators of environmental health. When birds of prey thrive, it usually means the ecosystem supporting them is functioning well. Every Tab Counts!
32 Years of Collecting Pull Tabs for Ronald McDonald House Charities Meeting with Lorraine Murphy, it quickly became clear that her 32-year commitment to collecting pull tabs for Ronald McDonald House is deeply personal. It began when her grandson, Christopher Carlson, underwent his first major open-heart surgery at just six years old. The family traveled to St. Petersburg, Florida, for the procedure and stayed at a Ronald McDonald House so they could remain close to Christopher during his surgery and recovery. When Christopher later needed another surgery, the importance of that support became even more meaningful. After the family moved back to The Great Outdoors in 1992 and Christopher began attending Imperial Estates Elementary School, Lorraine discovered the school’s pull-tab collection program. She began collecting, and 32 years later, she’s still at it. Okay Lorraine, how long have you been organizing and collecting pull tabs here at TGO? I’ve been doing this for 32 years. It’s something I’ve stayed committed to, and so many people in TGO have helped along the way. And I would like to thank all of them.
Do a few tabs really make a difference? Absolutely. It takes about 1,200 pull tabs to make just one pound, so it takes a lot of people saving a little to make a big difference. One handful may not seem like much, but when our loyal TGO residents collect them throughout the year, those handfuls quickly become full boxes. Every tab contributes to the total, and every person who collects is Where can TGO residents drop off their tabs? Every little pull People in the park really save them throughout the year? Absolutely! People bring them back from everywhere - even while on vacations in France and Germany, all over. Our snowbirds collect them while they’re away and bring them back when they return to TGO.

I pack the tabs into boxes that weigh about 22 pounds each and deliver them throughout the year to Imperial Estates Elementary School, which serves as a collection point here in Brevard County. From there, they are taken to be weighed and recycled, with proceeds helping support the Ronald McDonald House program. How many tabs do you think you collected over the years? That is a tough one to answer. Just recently, I delivered four boxes, weighing 22 pounds each, to the school. It’s easily hundreds of boxes throughout the years. Are these tabs just from soda and beer cans? No, not at all. You can save pull tabs from many different types of cans; tuna, fruits, vegetables, juice, soup, pet food and more. If it has an aluminum pull tab, save it!

Little Tabs with a Big Impact
It is one of the simplest ways imaginable to help a family in need: save the small aluminum tab from the top of a soda can. For years, Ronald McDonald House Charities has encouraged individuals, schools, businesses and community organizations to participate in its Pop Tab Program. The concept is simple. Aluminum tabs are collected, donated and eventually taken to a recycling facility, where they are weighed and exchanged for money. Those funds help Ronald McDonald House Charities continue providing comfort and support to families with children receiving medical care. Why collect just the tabs? Their small size makes them particularly convenient. They are easy to remove, clean, store and transport, allowing thousands of tabs to be collected without requiring a great deal of space. And it isn’t limited to soda cans. Aluminum tabs from other beverage cans, soup cans and even pet food cans can be collected as part of the program. Of course, a single aluminum tab is worth only a tiny fraction of a cent. The real power of the program comes from collecting them together. A handful becomes a container. Containers become bags and boxes. Over time, those small contributions can become hundreds of pounds of recyclable aluminum. The value of the aluminum fluctuates with the recycling market. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Florida reports that it typically receives approximately 40 to 70 cents per pound for aluminum tabs. The money generated through recycling helps support the general operating expenses of its Ronald McDonald Houses. Those Houses serve an important purpose. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Florida operates three Houses in Orlando that provide a “home away from home” for families whose children are receiving treatment at area hospitals and medical facilities. Families have access to private rooms, meals, laundry facilities and other comforts while remaining close to their children during what can be an extremely difficult time. It is a program built around a remarkably simple idea: something most of us would normally throw away can have value when a community decides to save it. And here at The Great Outdoors, that simple idea has been quietly put into practice for over three decades.

Meet Blue Heron’s Employees... Heidi Santti - Blue Heron’s Waitress
For nearly five years, Heidi Santti has been a familiar face at the Blue Heron, but her experience in the restaurant business goes back much further. Originally from New Hampshire, Heidi grew up around the restaurant business—her family owned a restaurant, and she developed an early love for cooking and serving people. After moving to Florida, she worked at Fat Boys, formerly located where El Leoncito is today, for seven years. Breakfast and lunch were her specialty, allowing her to be home with her two children in the evenings. She eventually went to work at Kloiber’s Cobbler Restaurant and Durango’s Steakhouse, for a combined 20 years before finding her way to The Great Outdoors. Heidi has a son and daughter and two grandsons. One grandson is currently attending school full time with plans to become an aerospace engineer. She has also lived in the same home for 34 years and says she knew it was meant to be hers from the moment she first walked inside. A chandelier hanging in the living room perfectly matched antique candleholders her grandmother had given her, right down to the metalwork and crystal drops. Despite another offer already pending, Heidi successfully purchased the house. These days, Heidi keeps busy both at work and at home, where she jokes that she is the “lawn boy, pool boy and weeding boy.” And if something goes wrong during her shift, don’t expect to hear Heidi swear. Years of working with the public have given her a more colorful vocabulary. Among her favorite substitutes are “Sugarplum Fairy” and the always-useful “Shut the front door!” It’s that personality and humor that TGO residents have come to know at the Blue Heron.

Did you know: Cream cheese originated in New York? It has become a staple in many homes and is used for both savory and sweet dishes. As a rule cream cheese is gluten free - but be sure to check the package that you are purchasing. If there are “adds” or “flavoring” added to it, then you may want to go with the traditional plain cheese. If stored properly in the refrigerator, it will last as much as two weeks past its expiration. Facts: Cream cheese offers low amounts of protein and carbs; it’s also low in calories and offers a variety of vitamins and minerals such as calcium, potassium, Vitamins A, K and Folate (which helps cell growth and boosts the metabolism). Cream cheese is a great and versatile ingredient for all healthy diet but then we can get a little naughty with it. TODAY’S RECIPE: Snickers Dip
1 – 8oz package of cream cheese, softened 1 – 8oz container of cool whip ¼ cup brown sugar 4 regular sized Snickers bars, chopped into small pieces. Directions: Mix the cheese, cool whip and brown sugar together until thoroughly incorporated. Then fold in all the Snickers bits and pieces. Refrigerate until you are ready to serve. Funny Thing Is… Filling Up Is A Gas I’ve been thinking about the “Good Ol’ Days” a lot lately. For example, remember when you would go to a gas station and out would run a team of guys in nicely pressed shirts (usually) and all you did was roll down your window and say “Fill it up,” roll your window back up and start counting out about $5 to pay for it. Those fine looking young men would clean your windshield, check the air in your tires, and check the oil. After you gave them your $5 they would give you a set of glasses, or dishes, or a 6-pack of cola. Yeah, I remember the days of 15 cent gas with all the amenities of free stuff and you didn’t even have to get out in the 105 degree heat index to pump it. At these prices not only should they be pumping the gas for me, but I should be able to get a full massage while I wait. Well, that’s not happening. Now you don’t even get a human. You have to deal with a computerized pump that makes you take a quiz before you can pump the first drop? Yeah, I went to fill up and had to take a test before it would let me spend the equivalent of a week’s groceries. You’ve seen it, “Is this a debit or credit card? Please wait. What is your billing zip code? Please wait. Do you want a car wash? Please wait. Do you want a receipt?” No, what I want is to fill my tank and leave! Finally the machine gives you permission to access its precious, overpriced gas but first you have to choose which grade. Whew. I’m mentally exhausted before I even start. So what’s next? You want to use the restroom and, if you’re in a place like California, before the door will unlock a computer screen gives you a quiz! “Are you a man or a woman? Please wait. If a man, would you prefer to stand or sit? Please wait. Do you want to wash your hands or sanitize? Please wait. Paper towels or blow dry?” If you answer all the questions correctly, the door will unlock and you can go inside if you haven’t already gone outside while trying to finish the quiz. TGO Committees - What They Do - And Their Contact Info... The Great Outdoors is home to several resident-led committees that help keep our community running smoothly and looking its best. These committees occasionally seek new members, and volunteering is a great way to contribute your time and talents. If you have experience or interest in any of the areas listed below, feel free to reach out to the committee chairman to ask about current openings. Your involvement makes a difference! ELECTIONS COMMITTEE - Vicki Littlefield - vickilynnl@prodigy.net Purpose of Committee - The Committee is responsible for overseeing and administering the community’s election process in a fair, transparent, and impartial manner. This includes organizing, monitoring, and validating the elections for the Chairman of the Board and Board of Directors, and the Architectural Review Committe (ARC) Chairman and district members of the ARC Committee. Powers of the Committee - The Committee shall develop and enforce procedures to ensure the integrity of the election process, including, but not limited to, the verification of candidate eligibility, preparation and distribution of ballots, collection and counting of votes, and certification of election results. The Committee may also hold candidate orientation sessions, monitor campaign activities to ensure compliance with community rules, and respond to election-related questions or challenges. FINANCE COMMITTEE - Drew Proulx - district9@tgocsa.org Purpose of Committee - The Committee is responsible for the fiscal operation of CSA. The Committee ensures that all phases of the operating expenses are handled in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. The Committee, in coordination with the CSA Manager, prepares the CSA budget for presentation to the Board of Directors in February of each year. Powers of the Committee - The CSA Board of Directors fiduciary responsibility is to build and maintain a funded reserve for the purpose of making major repairs and replacements of the common properties. In order to accomplish our short and long-term goals, the CSA Manager, along with the Chairman and two members of the Committee, meets yearly with each CSA department head and reviews their current budget and their anticipated budget for the coming year. FIREWISE COMMITTEE - Butch Jones - butch_jones2001@yahoo.com Purpose of Committee –The committee oversees and coordinates the TGO community’s participation in the “FIREWISE USA” program. The “Firewise USA” program is a national program to raise awareness of wildfire risks, and to the extent possible, to mitigate those risks. The program promotes preparedness in those instances when a wildfire occurs, by preplanning evacuation plans and having firefighting plans in place. The Firewise Committee is not tasked to be involved in fire safety in homes, RVs, or the workplace – that aspect of fire safety remains under the purview of the Safety & Security Committee. Powers of the Committee - The Committee educates the TGO community on the dangers of wildfires, to develop and implement wildfire mitigation and abatement practices, to prepare and test community evacuation plans, and to coordinate with state and local governmental agencies to reduce the wildfire dangers and to address any wildfires that develop. HUMAN RESOURCES COMMITTEE - Lauren Clark - chairman@tgocsa.org Purpose of Committee - The Committee works with the CSA Manager on the development and implementation of CSA human resource policies and procedures, and serves as an advisor to the CSA Board and the CSA Manager on human resource policies and procedures. Powers of the Committee - Human Resources Matters. The committee consults with the CSA Manager to share relevant information, and to serve as a resource when dealing with compelling or challenging human resource issues. The Committee recommends changes in CSA human resource policies to the CSA Board. The committee works to enhance the Association’s employment image in the surrounding community. INFRASTRUCTURE & NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE - Drew Proulx - district9@tgocsa.org Purpose of Committee - The Committee advises CSA Board of Directors on issues concerning the physical infrastructure as well as the natural resources necessary for the well-being of The Great Outdoors. Powers of the Committee - The Committee will present information to the Board of Directors concerning the infrastructure of TGO. The Committee will also provide support to the CSA Park Manager and his staff on issues concerning the infrastructure and assist in the preparation of budgets for maintenance and improvements to the infrastructure. The Committee will recommend and evaluate engineering studies when appropriate and necessary for the maintenance and improvement of our infrastructure. The infrastructure includes the potable water system; the wastewater collection and treatment system; the reuse water system; the storm water collection and runoff system including TGO ponds and lakes; the road system; and the golf course. The Committee may create any sub-committees which it deems necessary to carry out its responsibilities.

Powers of the Committee - The Committee periodically inspects CSA facilities to insure compliance with established safety and security practices and procedures, to identify potential safety hazards and security concerns and recommends policies and/or actions to the Board and/or the CSA Manager to remedy potential problems. The Committee is expected to focus on both common areas used by residents and guests, and also to focus on employee work areas and practices. Any safety reviews of CSA employees or work areas shall be coordinated in advance with the CSA Manager. The Committee may create any sub-committees which it deems necessary to carry out its responsibilities. TRAFFIC INFRACTIONS COMMITTEE - Cindy Marini - clmarini@aol.com Purpose of Committee - The Committee serves as the adjudicator when an individual appeals a citation for a violation of the Vehicle, Parking and Traffic Regulations of the CSA Rules & Regulations. Powers of the Committee - The Committee Chairperson shall appoint a “Hearing Panel” consisting of three (3) members of the Committee, acting on behalf of the entire Committee, to review and act on a citation. At a scheduled hearing, the Hearing Panel may interview the appellant, the CSA employee who issued the citation, and other persons as deemed appropriate, and review any documentary evidence introduced by the parties. The role of the Hearing Panel is limited to determining whether or not an infraction has occurred and, as a result, whether a citation was properly issued and a fine properly assessed.

A Minute with Meghan… Too Many Pills, Too Many Risks One little, two little, three little pills… four little, five little, six little supplements… seven little, eight little, nine little doses, ten… a whole lot of mess!!! Whether medications or supplements are prescribed or over-the-counter (OTC), there are rising risks for older adults, when managing the variety of medications they may be taking. Monday, September 21, is recognized as National Opioid Awareness Day, which serves as a reminder that opioid use (whether acute or chronic) can lead to harmful and unintentional complications. Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found adults aged 65 and have experienced the largest increase in drug overdose deaths in recent years. Despite progress in regulating prescription drugs, Florida continues to struggle with prescription opioid misuse, with an estimated 3% of Florida adults (approximately 500,000 people) misusing prescription painkillers between 2024 and 2025. While a portion of this statistic may reflect “misuse” related to the use of illegally obtained prescription medications and/or substance use disorder, it may also include unintentional medication-related problems associated with polypharmacy - a term used to describe the use of multiple medications by one person. Because older adults typically have higher rates of polypharmacy, this raises concerns for drug interactions and adverse side effects. Complications can include dizziness and sleepiness, which can lead to falls and fractures; increased confusion or memory problems, leading to mixing or overtaking medications; stomach or bathroom issues, such as constipation, trouble urinating, or erectile dysfunction; and respiratory distress or arrest, leading to death. Older adults are at a higher risk for complications and drug-to-drug interactions than younger adults, due to changes in how medications are broken down, processed, and cleared by the body. Older adults have a decreased ability to metabolize opioids, which causes these drugs to remain active in their system far longer than a young adult receiving the same dose, meaning, even safe doses can build up over time and become toxic.
Anyone who takes opioids could potentially overdose. You have an increased risk of overdose if you’re 65 or older, have certain medical conditions - such as sleep apnea, respiratory or lung disease, liver or kidney disease, use sedatives (like sleep aids), drink alcohol, or follow a specialty diet. Talk to your healthcare provider and review ALL of the medications (including OTC and supplements) you are taking. Ask them to write it down or provide you a list, with dosages, schedule, and directions for when and how to take your medications. Keep a list of all of your medications - prescription and OTC medicines, dietary supplements, vitamins, and herbal supplements you take - so that you can further discuss with a pharmacist, who can help identify potential drug interactions and medication-related complications.
Because older adults typically have higher rates of polypharmacy, this raises concerns for drug interactions and adverse side effects.
Even if you are not taking any opioid medications, it is always good to be aware of the risks, side effects, and any potential drug interactions involved with the medications you take. One helpful resource is https://www.drugs.com/ which allows you to enter your medication list, identify pills, check for drug interactions, and learn more about the medications you’re taking. This is a great resource to have in your “toolkit.” Taking medications safely starts with knowing exactly what you are taking and understanding how those medications may interact with one another. Make medication reviews a regular part of your healthcare routine, and don’t hesitate to ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist questions - because when it comes to your health, knowledge and awareness can help prevent a whole lot of mess.

The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00am on Monday, September 28, 2026. The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) will provide owners with a clear understanding of what is allowed and when ARC approval is needed. Gaining ARC approval is facilitated through a responsive process that is easy to use. The ARC Guidelines and Application Form are available for download at TGOCSA.org or you can also pick up an application in the CSA Office Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 8:00am until 5:00pm. Applications must be submitted to the CSA Office by 12:00 Noon on the Wednesday prior to the following Wednesday meeting date to be considered at that meeting. The ARC is elected by property owners. Community Information CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules: • Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up. • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Place trash within one foot of the road so it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00am - Pick-up time varies within the park. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also, be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility - 321-264-5009. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station 321-264-5048.
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Note to all residents... and visitors. Please don’t put your trash out to the curb too early - especially overnight. And if possible, place it in a covered trash bin. This time of year, with fewer people around the park, the local wildlife is working the night shift. Raccoons, opossums, armadillos, and other hungry critters consider an unattended trash bag an “all-you-can-eat buffet.” By morning, your neatly tied bag may have become dinner... with the leftovers scattered all over the neighborhood. A few extra minutes can help keep TGO looking beautiful for both the humans and the wildlife.

Turf Masters regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, a granular nitrogen fertilizer and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the Turf Masters list. Application dates are scheduled for November 2, 3 & 4 Service Calls - September 30 & November 30 Turf Masters advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.
Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline. • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources. • Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve. NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO Has Eight AEDs Located at CSA buildings. 1.
