In our last issue, we were delighted to introduce Renee Dietz as the newest addition to our team. Now, join us as we get to know her better—from her favorite hidden waterfall hike to her passion for helping clients find not just a home, but a lifestyle, in this fun Q&A with Renee!
What drew you to the Smoky Mountains—and what made you stay?
I grew up coming here on vacation. I couldn’t really appreciate the beauty and serenity of this place when I was younger. As I got older, each time I came this place seemed a little more magical. When it was time to relocate my family, there was no doubt that we would end up here.
If you had to describe your real estate style in three words, what would they be? Attentive, detailed oriented and a disrupter, when I need to be.
What’s your “happy place” in the mountains—trail, overlook, or hidden gem?
These mountains are my happy place. But when I need “Me Time,” there’s this great little waterfall a short hike from my home that I enjoy going to.
What’s your superpower when it comes to helping clients find “the one”?
I have a unique ability to access someone’s needs. I don’t just look at what they can afford but what type of lifestyle they have.
Are you a sunrise or sunset kind of person—and where’s your favorite place to catch it?
I love a good sunrise, but there’s something majestic in the sunsets behind the mountains.
When you’re not showing homes, where can we find you on a weekend?
On a trail, on a river, on a lake or just relaxing in the hammock with my family.
What’s a local business or restaurant you would recommend to someone new in town? Without a doubt, Wise Guyz…they have the best burgers and pizza in town.

This summer, Jan showcased her talent as Costume Director and Make-Up Chairperson for CATS (Connestee Amateur Theatre Society) in their lively production of On the Air. Jan’s creative touch transported the cast and the audience to a bygone era.
Bringing the golden age of radio to life, the “Pinkettes” (Sharon Gublo, Joan Toepfer, and Andrea Janzen) charmed the audience with timeless jingles like Brylcreem’s “A little dab’ll do ya” and Alka-Seltzer’s “Plop, plop, fizz, fizz—oh, what a relief it is!” Jan added to the magic with her with her aptly (or skillfully) chosen/selected 1940’s era polka dot dresses.
When the CATS Radio Show’s KCFR leading actress lost her voice and couldn’t perform the finale, Diane Lanum (in the role of Barbara Lantry) stepped in to save the day! Diane, pictured here, works on the KCFR theatre’s custodial team. One day, someone overheard her singing in the restroom and was blown away. As it turns out, Diane once performed on Broadway, and though she left the city lights behind, her remarkable voice remains with her. She stunned the audience and reminded us that life can be full of beautiful surprises. (Make-up, hair & costume selection coordinated by Jan.)

All aboard! Our family took a summer ride on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad this summer and loved every minute of the views, the vibe, and the adventure. If you’re local (or have guests in town), this is one ride you don’t want to miss!
Don’t Be Afraid To Buy That Spooky Home
Old homes in need of lots of repairs can often be spooky—but that doesn’t mean they’re haunted. A spooky home may only need work, not an exorcism. If you’re open to it, you could end up with more space and features at a bargain price.
Older homes needing work tend to sell at an attractive discount. Even if you feel like you’ve walked into a time capsule where you don’t belong, the age and condition of the home matter little if you renovate it in a financially feasible way.
The other option is demolition and building a new home. Talk to your lender and see if the price of the home and the cost of renovations or building new are affordable.
Just don’t over-improve for the neighborhood. Your benchmark will be nearby, similar homes that have either renovated or rebuilt to modern homebuyers’ standards.
So, don’t be spooked by a dark, spooky home. It may only need a new electrical panel, new lights, new windows, and some tree-trimming.

To make your home ready for Fall 2025, you’ll be delighted to know that many of today’s top decorating trends are all about coziness and comfort—just what you want to surround yourself with for cooler weather.
So why are comfort and coziness a thing all of a sudden? Home design is always evolving, borrowing from the past and looking toward the future. Except for Boho, décor has lately been more about executing a popular and easily identifiable style like 20th Century modernism than reflecting the homeowner’s personality and heritage. The best-known of these styles are minimalism and mid-century modern which are slowly giving way to highly personalized cottage-like comfort, color and curated heirlooms.
But, don’t throw out your futuristic egg chair just yet. You can transition at your own
pace and taste level by introducing a few elements to enhance your home.
Less is more
Less is more, the mantra of minimalism, means adopting a simpler lifestyle devoid of materialistic consumerism. How minimalism translates to décor is that rooms, furniture and objects are stripped to their “core function,” with limited materials (steel, wood, stone, glass), neutral colors, simple forms, clean lines, natural light, and lack of clutter. Walls are bare or hold a single large statement abstract painting, neutralcolored fabrics become more interesting with lots of texture, bookcases are curated with only a few books and one sculpture, and kitchens look cleaner without upper cabinets. I’ve always loved to bake, but somehow, in all my years of cookies, cakes, and pies, I had never once attempted homemade cinnamon rolls. Don’t ask me why—I suppose it just felt like one of those “all day” projects reserved for people with more time than I usually have. But last Christmas, with my sweet daughter-in-love by my side, I finally rolled up my sleeves (literally) and gave it a try. And let me tell you, nothing bonds two bakers like wrestling sticky dough and trying not to eat all the filling before it makes it into the rolls.
To our delight, the recipe using instant yeast turned out to be super simple—almost suspiciously so! We laughed, we floured the counters (and maybe ourselves a little), and we decided right then and there that this was the start of a brand-new Christmas tradition. The smell of cinnamon and sugar filled the house, and when we pulled those golden spirals out of the oven, we both agreed: Christmas had never tasted this good.

There’s something extra special about sharing homemade treats with the people you love. When I host friends and family, I want them to feel at home in our home. For me, that means they can wake up whenever they like, pour a cup of coffee, and find a homemade treat waiting for them. One of my favorite make-ahead options is a “muffin flight”—three kinds of muffins baked ahead so everyone has a choice. The best part? If someone’s up early, we can simply relax and enjoy the morning together—no stress, just more time to connect.
