IVECO - NI TRUCKS BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE WITH IVECO EXCELLENCE
ALL ROADS LEAD TO IAA This September all roads will lead to IAA Transportation 2026. Taking place in Hanover from 15-20th September, this event is the industry’s premier international showcase. Taking place every two years IAA Transportation brings together the world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, trailer builders, logistics providers, technology companies, suppliers and policymakers to present the innovations that will shape the future of the transport and logistics world. More than simply a trade exhibition, IAA has become the industry’s barometer, offering an early look at the technologies, partnerships and business strategies that will define the next generation of transport. Over the past few months several leading OEM’s have been holding pre-IAA press conferences giving the media a glimpse of what they can expect at this year’s show. Others are keeping things a bit more secret – with big reveals planned for the event itself. For manufacturers, operators and freight professionals alike, Hanover remains the place where tomorrow’s transport solutions are unveiled and where the conversations shaping the future of the global logistics industry begin. We will bring you what’s new from IAA in our next magazine.

Over the past 12 months, the business – a long-standing member of the Palletways network – has brought together its transport, distribution, tank services, customs, warehousing and freight management capabilities into a single integrated operating model. The transformation has been led by Managing Director Steven McBride, Head of Commercial Tyler Eaton and Interim Operations Director Nigel Moore, with a focus on improving coordination, visibility and accountability across the organisation, which has sites in Preston and Newtownabbey. This integrated approach has delivered a market-leading on-time delivery rate of 99.7% across Montgomery’s fleet of more than 200 trucks and over 750 trailers. The model has also delivered benefits for the company’s growing customer base. In one case, a major client achieved a 7% reduction in annual global freight spend following consolidation of its logistics requirements within the new model. In another, Montgomery Transport Group reduced damage-related claims by 92% for a new customer within six months of taking on its

Lisburn-Based Chilled and Frozen Food Distributor Breaks Ground on £15m Expansion Construction work begins on PRM Group’s major new facility, creating 40 jobs in its first phase and supporting employment across the construction sector Construction work has officially commenced on a major £15 million expansion project by Lisburn-based PRM Group, one of Ireland’s leading chilled and frozen food sales, distribution and logistics businesses. The family-owned company, which distributes household brands including Muller, Ferrero, Fage, Nomadic, Biotiful and GU to retailers across the island of Ireland and GB, has broken ground on a new purpose-built facility at Moira Road, Lisburn. The investment will create 40 new jobs in the first phase of operation, with additional roles expected to follow as the site reaches full capacity. The project is also set to support employment across the local construction sector throughout the build programme. The new facility will sit alongside PRM’s existing headquarters and forms part of the company’s long-term strategy to expand its operations and meet increasing demand from customers and supplier partners across Ireland, Great Britain and Europe. Once completed, the development will provide more than 100,000
Tesco, Dunnes Stores, Musgrave and Marks & Spencer. Philip Morrow, CEO and Founder of PRM Group, said: “Breaking ground on this development is a landmark moment for PRM and the culmination of four years of planning and preparation. This £15 million investment shows our confidence in the future of the business and our commitment to supporting our customers, supplier partners and employees. “The new facility will significantly increase our capacity, improve efficiencies across the business and create new employment opportunities. It will also help future-proof our operations as we continue to grow across our serving markets.”

The facility will also include modern office accommodation, dedicated areas for innovation and product development, and sustainability-focused infrastructure complete with energy-efficient
systems and environmentally responsible design principles. Founded by Philip and Lynne Morrow in 1988, PRM has grown into one of the most significant players in the chilled and frozen food sector, delivering more than 300,000 cases of product each week and working with major retailers including
The new development will complement PRM’s existing operations in Lisburn, Dublin, Dromore and L’Derry and is expected to be delivered in phases. The expansion follows a period of significant growth for the business and further strengthens PRM’s position as a leading partner for chilled and frozen food brands seeking access to the all-Ireland market. The first phase of the new facility is expected to become operational towards the end of 2027.
Scania is powering up electric truck production with €70m investment into its Angers facility Scania is powering up its electric truck production by investing €70 million in its production site in Angers, France. This investment will see the production line adapted for electric truck production and include an extension of the existing facility. It will build on the site’s existing capabilities and support Scania’s long-term strategy to develop the technologies, industrial capabilities and partnerships needed for the future of transport. Petrus Sundvall, President of Scania Production Angers, said: “This investment reflects our ambition to secure the long-term future of the Angers site while increasing its flexibility. “We are preparing for the future, but we must remain able to adapt to changing volumes and market dynamics. The site will be capable of assembling both combustion engine and electric trucks, ensuring we can respond to evolving customer demand.” Angers has been part of Scania’s industrial

system for more than three decades and plays an important role in serving customers in France and across Europe. The site has consistently demonstrated strong industrial performance and adaptability, making it a recognised and reliable contributor within Scania’s production network. Christian Levin, President and CEO of Scania: “The transition to electrified transport is not only about vehicles. It is about creating the conditions that enable transport operators to invest with confidence. “Access to charging infrastructure, renewable electricity and predictable policy frameworks will be critical to accelerating the shift. Scania is investing to support this transition, but lasting progress will depend on how quickly the entire transport ecosystem can move forward together.” Reducing emissions from road transport will require action across the entire value chain, from vehicle manufacturers and transport operators to energy providers, infrastructure developers and policymakers.
Scania continues to invest across its value chain to help enable this transition, including vehicle technology, battery systems, industrial capabilities and charging solutions. Christian Levin adds: “Europe has set ambitious targets for reducing emissions from transport. Achieving those ambitions will require coordinated action across the entire value chain. “Transport operators need the confidence to invest, infrastructure needs to be deployed at scale, and regulatory frameworks must support long-term planning. “This investment demonstrates Scania’s commitment to contributing to that transition and helping create the conditions for a more sustainable transport system.” The investment in Angers represents another step in Scania’s commitment to driving the shift towards a sustainable transport system. By strengthening its production capacity for electric trucks, Scania is helping create the conditions for a transport system that is both more sustainable and more competitive.
VEHICLE SAFETY PLATFORM
WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM
BRAKE TRAK PRO, POWERED BY BPW IDEM, AS SEEN AT THE ROAD TRANSPORT EXPO 2026 BRAKE TRAK PRO attracted considerable interest at Road Transport Expo 2026, where the enhanced vehicle safety platform made its exhibition debut. Building on the success of BPW idem’s established digital trailer telematics solution, BRAKE TRAK PRO was well received by fleet operators and transport professionals looking to harness improved trailer data, monitoring and operational insights to drive greater efficiency across their fleets. Workshop technicians were also keen to understand the benefits of automated reporting, including earlier fault detection and less disruption to inspection routines. At the heart of BRAKE TRAK PRO is an Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring System. Compliant with the current Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) regulations as set out in the DVSA Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness, this in-service brake monitor can automatically generate a brake performance report aligned with a fleet’s maintenance schedule. A meaningful brake report can serve as an alternative to laden roller brake testing, reducing the need for testing to one during the annual MOT inspection.
The BRAKE TRAK PRO platform also supports scalable features, including a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Brake Lining Wear Sensors, and Individual Wheel Station Sensing.
Brake Lining Wear Sensors help determine when the friction material is approaching the wear limit, optimising its use and preventing premature or delayed replacement.
The BPW idem Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) continuously monitors tyre pressure and temperature to improve safety, efficiency, and performance. Fully compliant with UN ECE 141 regulations, the system transmits live tyre data directly to the truck via the Electronic Braking System (EBS), enabling immediate driver alerts and reducing the risk of costly tyre blowouts.
Individual Wheel-station Sensing delivers nextlevel diagnostic capabilities to fleets, enabling them to pinpoint poor brake performance to specific brakes. Together, these features can maximise trailer uptime, enhance on-road safety, support compliance obligations, and reduce total operating costs by enabling earlier fault detection and smarter maintenance decisions.

LONG LIVE THE KING!
SCANIA LONGLINE GOES INTO LOW-VOLUME SERIES PRODUCTION Scania is taking its premium cab offering to the next level by putting its fabled Longline cab into series production. The Longline concept originated from customer demand to improve driver conditions, and this latest generation will be built by in low volumes by Laxå – with the chassis being built in Södertälje. The ability to create a factory certified production version of the truck, is thanks to the introduction of European IVD legislation (Increased Vehicle Dimensions) allowing customers in Europe to purchase longer vehicles. Lars Gustafsson, Head of Trucks at Scania CV AB, said: “This is a natural
evolution of a concept that has long been appreciated by customers. With Longline, we combine heritage with modern industrialisation and offer a platform that can be tailored to individual needs. “The cab is not only about space, but about creating a better working environment for drivers. This is increasingly important for our customers.” The Longline’s cab will be available in two length versions – 28 (280cm) and 31 (310cm) - both with a high roof. The interior height will exceed two metres, providing standing room for most drivers. Designed as a flexible platform rather than a fully specified interior solution. From factory, it will be offered with a limited interior configuration behind the seats, including options such as a standard bed with storage
or shelving – or a more open layout. The design focuses on defined mounting points, enabling customers to design interiors according to their specific requirements. Many customers are expected to personalise their vehicles through custom paint jobs and interior solutions. To support this, Scania will offer premium paint options of all automotive colours available in collaboration with a Swedish custom painter to reduce overall lead times. Samuel Suderbys, Managing Director at Laxå, said: “We simply don’t add things that aren’t needed, limiting waste in line with our sustainability targets.” Sales begin in April 2026 with first deliveries expected this autumn. As a low-volume offering, the Longline cab is intended for those seeking a platform to build something tailored, unique and distinctive. HARRIS MAXUS UK BUILDS MOMENTUM IN NORTHERN IRELAND A CHANGING MARKETPLACE Northern Ireland’s light commercial vehicle market is becoming increasingly competitive, with operators placing greater emphasis on whole-life value than ever before. Whether it’s parcel delivery, construction, utilities or rental fleets, operators expect more from every van they buy. Reliability, payload, specification and running costs all matter, but so too does the quality of back-up behind the vehicle once it leaves the showroom.
budgets, making overall value more important than ever. Purchase price remains a consideration, but increasingly it’s just one element of a much broader calculation that includes warranty, uptime, maintenance support and fuel efficiency. Recognising those market conditions, Harris MAXUS UK goes into summer with a series of attractive finance packages designed to make investment easier for customers across the MAXUS range. The offers provide businesses with greater flexibility when replacing ageing vehicles or expanding their fleets, helping operators secure modern, well-equipped vans while maintaining tighter control over monthly expenditure.
That changing expectation is helping reshape the light commercial vehicle market, creating opportunities for manufacturers prepared to invest beyond simply launching new products. Harris MAXUS UK is one of them. The company has steadily strengthened its presence across Northern Ireland, combining an expanding dealer network with improved aftersales support, competitive finance and a product range that’s attracting growing interest from operators of every size.
LOCAL SUPPORT, NATIONAL BACKING Today, six dealer partners provide comprehensive coverage in Northern Ireland, giving customers straightforward access to sales, servicing, parts and technical expertise wherever they operate. From sole traders to major

HIGHLY CAPABLE DELIVER 9 fleets managing hundreds of vehicles, the objective is the same; provide local support backed by OEM-scale resources. The MAXUS network has become increasingly important as more businesses take a fresh look at vehicle replacement programmes. Rising operating costs continue to place pressure on
Leading that proposition is the MAXUS DELIVER 9, one of the UK’s fastest-growing large vans. Available from the equivalent of just £85 per week, every DELIVER 9 comes complete with a five-year warranty and five years’ roadside assistance. The award-nominated model has enjoyed an impressive year and is now firmly established as

one of the UK’s top-selling large vans; evidence that operators are increasingly prepared to look beyond traditional manufacturers. At the same time, its inclusion in Export & Freight’s 2026 Van of the Year award reflects growing industry recognition for what has become a genuinely credible contender in one of the market’s most competitive sectors. Available in both Euro-6 and fully electric variants, the DELIVER 9 has been developed to meet the needs of businesses with very different operating profiles while maintaining a consistent platform across the range. Customers can select the drivetrain that best suits their business today, while retaining the reassurance of a proven vehicle designed for demanding daily use. Capability is central to its appeal. A gross vehicle weight of 3,500kg, towing capacity of up to 2,800kg and cargo volume of 11.5 cubic metres provide the versatility required by operators working across construction, logistics, utilities and last-mile delivery. Meanwhile, a generous load length and practical cargo height ensure the vehicle is well suited to businesses carrying
bulky equipment or high-volume consignments. Importantly, the 2.0-litre engine features a dry timing belt designed to reduce maintenance complexity over the vehicle’s working life.
BUILT FOR FLEET OPERATORS A high-spec has also played a significant role in the vehicle’s growing popularity. Features such as LED lighting, reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, air conditioning, a 12.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, together with an eight-way adjustable driver’s seat, provide drivers with a working environment that compares favourably with far more expensive competitors. For many operators, the attraction is straightforward; a high specification, competitive whole-life costs and strong warranty support, without the premium pricing associated with more established European brands. The growing confidence in the product is reflected by customer demand. Tesco expanded its electric MAXUS fleet in 2025 with a further order for 750 eDELIVER 9 models, taking its total
investment beyond 1,000 vehicles. A very wellknown vehicle rental company also placed an order for 1,000 DELIVER 9 vans, while closer to home the Northern Ireland Housing Executive has added 45 DELIVER 9 vehicles to its fleet this year.
MAKING ELECTRIFICATION MORE AFFORDABLE For operators considering electrification, Harris MAXUS UK is also highlighting the significant financial incentive of its £15,000 MAXUS Green Grant, which includes the Government OZEV Grant (subject to eligibility), making the move to zero-emissions even more accessible. For operators across Northern Ireland, the combination of six established dealerships, attractive finance packages, Government incentives – plus the DELIVER 9 panel van’s growing market recognition – presents a compelling proposition. As businesses continue to seek better value without compromising performance or support, Harris MAXUS UK appears well placed to continue building its presence throughout the country.

VOLVO TRUCKS POWERS AHEAD WITH ITS ELECTRIC VISION BY AUSTIN LYNCH
Volvo Trucks know the route to zero emissions isn’t a straight line. It’s a journey full of twists and turns, changing conditions, and tough demands. And it’s not just about choosing technology – it’s about choosing the partner who understands your work. At a recent Volvo Trucks launch event in Gothenburg , Sweden the manufacturer unveiled to the press two of their latest developments - the new D-13 engine platform, designed to be the most fuel efficient and versatile engine Volvo have ever built; and their new generation of electric trucks. Volvo has been making heavy duty electric trucks since 2019 and now for 2026 they have further developed their product offering the customer bigger range, higher specification, higher levels of safety and better driving experience. Opening the launch event, held at the Volvo Trucks Experience Centre on the outskirts of Gothenburg Frank Kimpe, Senior Vice President Volvo Trucks Europe South and West, said that Volvo Trucks are in a strong position at the moment. “Since we launched the FH Aero in 2024 we have delivered 68,000 – its performance has been fantastic for our customers – it really has

contributed to the success and profitability of our customers. “We have delivered already 6,400 electrical trucks globally, and we have been receiving the five star from Euro NCAP for 7 of our truck models. And that is really a strong proof of our commitment to safety.”“And we keep on improving our products, improving our products, with solutions, for electrical trucks, but also we keep on investing in solutions for our combustion engines, for alternative use. And today, we will show you what next steps that we are taking. And we all know that each customer is different. All customers are driving in different conditions, driving different segments, different applications, different locations. So we need to be flexible in the solutions that we provide.“
NEW DEVELOPMENTS Mr Kimpe first talked about the new D-13 engine, which he said is the most fuel-efficient engine Volvo have ever built –capable of running on diesel, gas and sustainable fuels. The D-13 features a completely new engine block and redesigned
cylinder head. A completely redesigned fuel system with a high pressure pump builds pressure and delivers fuel with absolute precision. Inside the cylinders, next generation wave pistons has added dividing waves that direct the flames more effectively creating Volvo’s most effective combustion ever - cleaner, more powerful, and more fuel efficient. The new engine platform has been introduced as Volvo takes the next steps of improvement on their journey to zero emissions. The engine also complies with new noise regulation (R51.03 phase 3) coming into force in Europe in July 2027. “And second we are launching our new generation of electrical trucks – the next step into our journey, which has started already many years ago. And you will experience longer ranges, you will experience a higher productivity and a better driveability.“ Volvo have updated their electric versions of the FH, FM and FMX trucks giving these

We left the Volvo base and heading for the centre of Gothenburg where we had to contend with some morning rush hour traffic on the roads in and around the city.
I was encouraged by the Volvo professional driver accompanying me to use Volvo’s predictive cruise control while negotiating the traffic.
Volvo’s ‘I-See ’ predictive cruise control optimises your speed to the route. When driving with the cruise control activated, ‘I-See’ adapts to the topography to use your truck’s kinetic energy efficiently. When approaching a curve or roundabout, ‘I-See’ adjusts the speed so you can pass in the most energy-efficient way. It also adapts to upcoming

Once we left Gothenburg behind we took a more rural route and as the roads got smaller I decided to overrule the truck on a few occasions, and kept the speed at a slighter more leisurely pace than the limit might allow. The driver is always in control, and the system is merely a very intelligent driver aid to be used when it suits the driver – and the conditions – best.

VOLVO UNVEILS FUTURE-PROOF POWERTRAINS TO DRIVE THE ROAD TO NET ZERO New engine platform combines greater efficiency with renewable fuel flexibility. Volvo Trucks has unveiled one of its most significant powertrain developments in decades, introducing an all-new 13-litre engine platform designed to deliver greater fuel efficiency, lower emissions and the flexibility to run on a wide range of renewable fuels. The launch forms part of a multi-billion Swedish Krona investment by the manufacturer, aimed at strengthening its global product offering and accelerating progress towards its ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. At the heart of the announcement are two new 13-litre engines – one diesel and one gas-powered – both developed entirely in-house by Volvo. Designed from the outset to operate on renewable fuels such as biodiesel, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and biogas, the engines are also engineered to support future hydrogen combustion applications. For operators facing increasing pressure to decarbonise while maintaining productivity and profitability, the new platform offers a practical and flexible solution.
22
EXPORT&FREIGHT
A GLOBAL APPROACH TO DECARBONISATION Volvo says differing fuel infrastructures, regulations and customer requirements across global markets mean there is no single solution for reducing transport emissions. Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, describes the new powertrains as a critical step forward. “The decarbonisation of the transport industry needs to accelerate, and the new technologies we are launching now will offer transport companies the best of two worlds,” he says. “While our second-generation electric trucks can replace traditional diesel trucks in many applications, there remain regions and transport segments where combustion engines continue to play an essential role in reducing CO2 emissions, both now and in the future.” The common engine platform also provides significant production efficiencies and economies of scale, allowing Volvo to maximise investment while accelerating technological development.
THE MOST FUEL-EFFICIENT COMBUSTION ENGINES YET The new engines represent Volvo Trucks’ most fuel-efficient combustion powertrains to date. When combined with the company’s latest aerodynamic and fuel-saving technologies, the new platform can reduce fuel consumption by up to four per cent compared with the engines it replaces. This builds on the success of Volvo’s Aero range, introduced in early 2024, which already delivers fuel savings of up to five per cent over previous models. Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, believes the new platform marks a significant evolution for the combustion engine.

route back towards Gothenburg, and over the hour or so I got very comfortable behind the wheel of this new generation Volvo truck. Volvo had several more trucks available to drive and I also got a quick spin around the Volvo test track of the FHE Aero 6x2 T with E-axle. With eight batteries and 780kWh energy storage this truck has a massive range of up to 700km proving that going electric doesn’t have to mean range is compromised – and it proves the case for electric heavy trucks continue to grow stronger. Volvo accept this is only the start of the journey, and the question Volvo Trucks keep asking is ‘what is the best way for our customers (to decarbonise) on their journey’. With their latest most efficient diesel engine, and a range of new generation electric trucks, Volvo are working tirelessly to provide the perfect solution for their customers on their way to Net Zero.
“These all-new engines are not only our most fuel-efficient powertrains ever, but they will also take our combustion engine into the future,” he says. “The flexibility and readiness for all existing diesel and gas fuels, as well as future hydrogen applications, means we can offer efficient trucks with the possibility of netzero emissions to customers worldwide.”
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY FOR GREATER EFFICIENCY The new engine platform incorporates a host of engineering improvements designed to enhance performance and reduce operating costs. Among the innovations are refined engine braking functionality for improved drivability, redesigned cylinders and turbochargers, and an updated version of Volvo’s renowned I-Shift transmission. Both diesel and gas variants also deliver significantly higher torque levels. Many versions of the diesel engine are compatible with Volvo’s I-Roll technology featuring automatic engine stop/start functionality. This allows the truck to shut down the engine and freewheel on downhill sections, helping operators further reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
* Fuel cell electric vehicles * Combustion engines powered by renewable fuels The renewable fuels strategy includes green hydrogen, biogas (bio-LNG), biodiesel and HVO. Hydrogen combustion technology represents the next major milestone for the new engine platform. Volvo has already begun testing hydrogen-powered combustion engines on public roads, with a commercial launch planned before the end of the decade. Alongside the new combustion engines, Volvo is also expanding its battery-electric offering. The manufacturer has been leading the heavy-duty electric truck market since 2019 and has now sold more than 6,400 battery-electric trucks in over 50 countries. A new long-range heavy-duty electric model, capable of travelling up to 700 kilometres on a single charge, represents another major step towards making zero-
emission transport viable across more applications and longer distances. The new generation of electric trucks will be produced in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Ghent, Belgium, with rollout beginning in 2026. Production of the new combustion engines will take place in Skövde, Sweden, with sales commencing during the third quarter of 2026.
FUTURE-PROOFING TRANSPORT Volvo Trucks’ latest powertrain developments reinforce a key message emerging across the industry: the transition to net-zero transport will require multiple technologies working together. By combining highly efficient combustion engines capable of running on renewable fuels with increasingly capable batteryelectric trucks and future hydrogen solutions, Volvo believes it can provide transport operators with practical pathways to decarbonisation, regardless of geography, infrastructure or application.
The new engines also offer lower noise levels and improved overall driving characteristics, delivering benefits for both operators and drivers.
THREE TECHNOLOGIES, ONE NET-ZERO GOAL The launch underlines Volvo Trucks’ commitment to its threepath strategy towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. Rather than relying on a single technology, Volvo is pursuing parallel development of: * Battery electric vehicles

ALEXANDER GROUP CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE ‘Large enough to reassure, small enough to react’ Few Northern Ireland companies can claim to have built a reputation spanning six decades while remaining true to the values on which they were founded. From modest beginnings as a family enterprise to becoming one of the region’s leading providers of premium materials handling solutions, the Alexander Group is a genuine local success story. Today, the Alexander Group is led by Robin Alexander’s sons, Mark and Peter, who have continued to grow the business while preserving the strong family ethos established by their father. Their hands-on approach has ensured the company retains its long-term outlook, personal customer relationships and commitment to service, while continuing to invest in new technology and future growth.
Today, as the exclusive Northern Ireland distributor for Linde Material Handling, the company is preparing to celebrate its 60th anniversary; a milestone that reflects decades of innovation, customer loyalty and sustained growth. Founded in 1967 by Robin Alexander as Handling and Storage Equipment Co. Ltd., initially representing Henley Forklifts, the business emerged at a time when Northern Ireland’s manufacturing, engineering and food production sectors were expanding rapidly. Recognising the increasing demand for reliable materials handling equipment backed by responsive local support, the company quickly established a reputation for quality and service. Over the past six decades, while the business has evolved and embraced new technologies, its philosophy has remained remarkably consistent. By focusing on supplying world-class equipment, delivering exceptional after-sales support and building long-term partnerships with customers, the Alexander group has earned a reputation as one of Northern Ireland’s most trusted names in materials handling. Following Lansing Bagnall’s acquisition of Henley in 1976/77, the company expanded its portfolio to represent both brands through the acquisition of North Down Engineering, the established Lansing Bagnall agent for the region. A further milestone came in 1989 when Linde Material Handling acquired Lansing Bagnall.

For many years the business operated from rented premises at Seymour Hill Industrial Estate, Dunmurry, before relocating in 1994 to its purpose-built headquarters at Blaris Industrial Estate, Altona Road, Lisburn, where it remains today.
Founder Robin Alexander sadly passed away in late 2025 but his ethos lives on.
Handling and Storage Equipment subsequently became the sole authorised Linde Material Handling dealer in Northern Ireland - a position the company proudly continues to hold today. The appointment proved to be a defining moment in the company’s history, transforming it from a successful local equipment supplier into one of Northern Ireland’s leading materials handling specialists.
From this strategic location, the Alexander group supports customers across a wide range of sectors including food and drink manufacturing, warehousing and logistics, ports, construction, retail distribution, pharmaceuticals, recycling and waste management, agriculture and general manufacturing. Company Director Peter Alexander believes one of the key reasons for the company’s success and longevity is its close relationship with Linde Material Handling. “We pride ourselves on being the local, easy-totalk-to element of a global corporation. While we have the backing of one of the world’s leading manufacturers, we still provide a personal, faceto-face service and are always at the end of the phone whenever our customers need us.”

The company also attributes much of its success to its loyal and experienced workforce. “We currently have 34 employees with a huge amount of cumulative knowledge and experience. Over the years we’ve built incredibly strong personal relationships with our customers. They know us, they trust us and they know we’ll always look after them.” Despite its continued growth, Peter believes the company’s family values remain its greatest strength. “We’re large enough to reassure, but small enough to react. What we offer is as much about the service we provide as it is about the products themselves.”
Ryan Piper ready for work.
As Northern Ireland’s exclusive Linde distributor, the Alexander group is proud to represent what Peter describes as a premium materials handling brand. While he acknowledges that many businesses are naturally attracted by lowerpriced alternatives, he says customers who choose Linde are investing in long-term reliability, performance and value. “Linde products are exceptionally reliable and built to last. Most customers will achieve at least eight-years’ service from a truck, while one customer is still operating a 22-yearold Linde forklift every single day.” Many customers choose contract hire, particularly larger organisations looking to replace equipment on a planned cycle, while others prefer the long-term value of outright ownership. Either way, the quality and durability of the product ensures Linde forklifts retain exceptionally strong residual values.
CORE BUSINESS The Alexander Group’s business is built around three key areas: Sales - As Northern Ireland’s exclusive Linde Material Handling distributor, the company supplies one of the world’s leading ranges of forklift trucks and warehouse equipment. Service - A comprehensive range of maintenance packages is tailored to meet the individual requirements of every customer and fleet. Hire - With a rental fleet of more than 500 forklift trucks, the Alexander group provides flexible short and long-term hire solutions to keep customers’ operations moving. Every new Linde forklift is built to order, allowing customers to specify the exact chassis, mast, battery, cab and optional equipment required for their operation. “Our close ties to the Linde MH teams in both the UK and ROI enable us to offer a comprehensive range of equipment and services, having the expertise of a worldwide manufacturer at our disposal allows us to specify, implement and support to most technically advance offering in the market” Peter Alexander outside Lisburn office and workshop with David Megrath and Philip Edgar the service management team responsible for ensuring your fleet runs smoothly.

SPECIAL FOCUS: HENDERSON GROUP
For more than 125 years, Henderson Group has remained one of Northern Ireland’s most recognisable and trusted business names. From humble beginnings selling milk, eggs and cheese on Belfast’s Old Lodge Road to becoming a retail, wholesale and foodservice powerhouse employing more than 6,000 people, the company continues to evolve while remaining firmly rooted in family values and community spirit. Today, Henderson Group operates across retail, wholesale, foodservice, technology, property and print, serving communities throughout Northern Ireland and beyond. Yet despite its scale and continued expansion, the business remains driven by the same ethos that shaped it in 1897 supporting local people, investing in communities and building long-term partnerships.
ORIGINS AND FAMILY ETHOS The Henderson story began in 1897 when John Henderson established a small trading business supplying fresh produce to local customers before later moving operations to St George’s Market in Belfast.

Henderson’s relationship with SPAR has enabled the company to build a retail network deeply embedded within local communities. There are now more than 450 SPAR stores across Northern Ireland, alongside the larger EUROSPAR format, which Henderson introduced in 2000 under the concept of “your community supermarket.”
Recent developments include destinationstyle stores that combine enhanced retail with added local services such as pharmacies and takeaways. Alan points to a recently opened 9,000 sq ft EUROSPAR in Glengormley, which has created a new town centre focal point for the community. “These stores are

Behind the scenes, advanced warehouse management systems, voice-picking technology and AI-driven inventory systems help deliver a remarkable 99.9% warehouse service level. “Technology is absolutely central to how we operate,” Alan explained. “From product placement to route optimisation and forecasting demand patterns, it’s all about efficiency and reducing waste.”

SUSTAINABILITY AND GREEN INVESTMENT Sustainability has become one of the biggest strategic priorities across the Henderson Group. Significant investment has already been made into energy efficiency and environmental improvements throughout the business, from powering stores using solar panels to saving energy by installing fridge and freezer doors in shops. Key Sustainability initiatives include: • 4,500 solar panels installed across the Mallusk logistics complex

• 88 solar arrays across company-owned site
and trialling of different EV tractor units.
• Introduction of fridge doors across retail refrigeration units
However, Alan believes infrastructure remains one of the biggest challenges facing widespread EV adoption within the logistics industry.
• Transition to lower global warming refrigerant systems • Air curtain and dock curtain technologies to retain temperature control in warehouses • Lithium-ion warehouse equipment upgrades The company is also accelerating its move towards electric transport solutions, with new electric rigid vehicles planned for both Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland plus introduction of fully electric trailers
“The challenge is making sure the infrastructure exists to support that transition,” he explained. “The ambition is there, but the industry needs the right support.” The company is also socially responsible when it comes to waste. Through such partnerships as People’s Kitchen and Fairshare - zero food waste goes to landfill.

Originally developed to support Henderson’s own retail operations, EDGEPoS has grown into a sophisticated end-to-end retail management system used by retailers throughout the UK and internationally. Integrating stock control, reporting, back-office management, self-service checkouts, electronic shelf labels and customer engagement tools, the platform helps retailers improve efficiency, profitability and customer experience.
PEOPLE, MENTORING AND INCLUSION Despite its scale, Henderson continues to place huge emphasis on people development and long-term careers. “Our people are our biggest asset,” admits Alan Abraham. HENDERSON GROUP CONTINUE TO DRIVE FLEET SAFETY FORWARD WITH SIMPLICITY GROUP For over nine years, Henderson Group has partnered with Simplicity Group, the exclusive provider of the MANTIS risk intelligence platform across Ireland and Northern Ireland, to protect drivers and gain full visibility across a growing fleet of vehicles and trailers. Henderson Group is one of Ireland and Northern Ireland’s leading family-owned businesses. This spans from its Foodservice, Wholesale and Driver Academy divisions. Together, these divisions support a fleet of more than 100 vehicles and trailers. They deliver chilled and frozen goods to customers across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Vehicles are in use for up to 20 hours a day, from early morning to late at night, servicing customers through some of Ireland’s most challenging road conditions. Many of the vehicles are very large, making maximum vision essential for drivers manoeuvring across busy sites. The Driver Academy also plays a key role in embedding safe practice across the fleet from day one. Henderson Group has been a Simplicity Group customer for nine years, a relationship that has grown alongside the fleet itself. What began with a smaller number of trucks has since expanded to include trailers as well, with new vehicles added to the platform as Henderson Group’s operation has grown. That growth reflects the level of confidence Henderson Group has placed in Simplicity Group, and the two companies now work together as a long-term safety partnership rather than a one-off supplier relationship. Rather than simply fitting cameras, Henderson Group adopted the MANTIS risk intelligence platform. Simplicity Group built their system around two priorities: keeping drivers safe and giving the business complete visibility over what is happening across its fleet at any given time. That visibility means footage and vehicle status can be checked remotely, when a vehicle is on its route or parked up, rather than waiting for it to return to depot. For businesses sometimes operating in

locations where theft or unauthorised activity is a concern, the platform allows vehicle visibility to be managed appropriately while still maintaining operational oversight.
For a business handling temperature-sensitive food distribution, visibility extends well beyond the road. Refrigerated unit cameras help Henderson Group’s teams confirm

deliveries and establish how goods were handled or whether any damage occurred in transit. Reversing cameras give drivers added confidence and visibility when manoeuvring large vehicles around tight yards and delivery sites. In an industry where a single dispute over a delivery can affect a customer relationship, having clear evidence to hand protects both Henderson Group’s drivers and its reputation.
FOCUS ON SAFETY Health and safety has long been a priority for Henderson Group, and the platform has become part of how that commitment is put into practice day to day. On behalf of the Henderson Group, Logistics Director, Alan Abraham has commented “The Mantis solution has significantly improved the level of insight that we gain from our fleet. It solidifies our desire to be a responsible company in marketplace that we operate in - bringing confidence across our Logistics teams. The results of the solution have delivered sustained and impactful benefits to our organisation.”
MANTIS EARNS ITS PLACE Simplicity Group supports Henderson Group, so they ensure the platform continues to grow alongside the business by adding new vehicles and trailers as the fleet has expanded. Commenting on the partnership, Jamie Marsh, Managing Director of Simplicity Group, said: “What we’ve built with Henderson Group goes well beyond simply supplying cameras. It’s a connected safety programme that gives their team the evidence, the data and the support they need to make faster, better-informed decisions, and to keep improving year on year.” He added: “Henderson Group are leading the way in driver and vehicle safety, and we look forward to continuing to support them through their ambitious growth plans over the next five years and beyond.”
MANTIS IN ACTION ACROSS THE FLEET When an incident does occur, speed of resolution is critical. MANTIS enables operators to locate
even the smallest timeframes in seconds, without the need to repeatedly download footage or wait for multiple video clips to load. This allows the team to respond quickly to customer queries, complaints, and insurance claims as they arise. Where a claim is unavoidable, the process is designed to move fast. Evidence including photos, video footage, GPS data and vehicle information is automatically compiled into a single, comprehensive case file. This significantly reduces administration for both the fleet operator and the insurer, while ensuring complete, accurate information is available from the outset. For a fleet operating daily routes across the length of the country, that speed is just as important as the safety benefits themselves.
SUPPORT That growth has also been matched by the level of day-to-day support Henderson Group receives from the Simplicity Group team. That commitment to ongoing improvement is built into the relationship itself. Regular reviews with their account manager allow both organisations to monitor trends, identify recurring risks and recommend training priorities or system improvements. It is a partnership built not around a single installation, but around a shared, ongoing commitment. Regular account reviews keep that programme sharp, helping both businesses set new goals and keep improving, year after year.

FUEL CARD
WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM
ONE CARD, EVERY JOURNEY, SIMPLIFIED:
RADIUS LAUNCHES ITS MOST AMBITIOUS FUEL & EV SOLUTION YET
The new Radius One card unifies fuel and electric vehicle charging into a single solution - and fleet operators right across Ireland are taking notice. For fleet operators across Ireland, managing fuel costs has long been a juggling act -multiple cards, multiple accounts, multiple invoices, and increasingly, the looming question of how to handle the shift to electric vehicles. Radius, one of Ireland’s most established fuel card providers and trusted by over 55,000 businesses, believes it has the answer: the Radius One card. Launched following an extensive period of customer consultation, Radius One is the company’s boldest product to date, a single card that covers both traditional fuel and EV charging across the largest business fuel and EV charging network in Ireland; with 96% coverage across the island, over 2,000 fuel stations, and 4,700 charge points, plus access to Great Britain and European networks for those operating across borders.
BUILT ON WHAT CUSTOMERS WERE TELLING US The genesis of Radius One is rooted firmly in fleet operator pain points. Through conversations with business owners, fleet managers, and industry associations, Radius consistently heard the same frustrations: too many cards and apps to manage, unpredictable EV pricing, limited charging network coverage, and the complexity of running fuel and electric vehicles under separate systems. “Radius One was born from genuinely listening to our customers. Fleet operators told us they didn’t want another card or another app, they wanted simplicity. One card, one account, one invoice. What we’ve built with Radius One is a product that removes the friction of running a modern fleet, whether that’s all diesel today or a mixed fleet moving towards electrification. We want businesses to feel that Radius is their mobility partner of choice, not just their fuel supplier.” Christine Adams, Head of Marketing, Radius
ONE NETWORK, ONE INVOICE, TOTAL CONTROL The value proposition of Radius One is elegantly simple. Businesses pay for fuel and EV charging with one card, receive one Revenue/HMRCcompliant paperless invoice, and manage everything through a single online account via Radius’s Velocity platform. Fixed EV charging rates eliminate the unpredictability that has made fleet managers wary of electrification, and there are no additional transaction or connection fees for EV charging. Velocity, which comes standard with every Radius One account, is the operational backbone of the product. From setting custom spend alerts and managing cards to running Fleet Control and Insights reports that flag suspicious transactions or fuel inefficiencies,

the platform gives fleet managers a genuinely comprehensive view of their operation. Route planning via the E-Route app further supports efficiency, helping drivers locate the nearest fuel station or charge point on any journey. The business case for consolidation is not complicated. Multiple supplier relationships mean multiple points of failure, multiple invoice reconciliation processes, and multiple exposures when audit time comes. A singlesupplier model is not simply a procurement decision - it is a governance one.
A MARKET READY FOR CHANGE Fleets right across the island are navigating an accelerating transition to alternative fuels, with businesses of all sizes grappling with how to manage the crossover between fuel and electric. The pressure is real: government decarbonisation targets, rising fuel costs, and the practical challenge of managing an EV fleet outside major urban centres are all forcing the issue for company directors and fleet managers alike. For businesses operating across both jurisdictions - as many do, trading and moving goods between the Republic and Northern Ireland and into Great Britain - the need for a fuel and charging solution that works seamlessly on both sides of the border is a practical requirement, not a nice-to-have. Few cards are genuinely built to meet it. “What we hear from Irish businesses time and again is that they’re not opposed to electrification - they’re opposed to disruption. They need to keep their fleets moving today while preparing for tomorrow. Radius One gives them exactly that: the confidence to run a mixed fleet now, and the infrastructure to transition to EV without changing how they manage their accounts or their spend. The Irish market has been waiting for a product like this, and we’re proud Radius is the one delivering it.” Peter Brown, Country Director, Radius Ireland.
THE SUSTAINABILITY IMPERATIVE Beyond the operational benefits, the shift to a unified fleet solution has a clear sustainability dimension. For any board or senior leadership team with ESG commitments, fragmented fleet management creates a reporting problem as much as an operational one; it is difficult to demonstrate genuine progress on fleet decarbonisation when fuel and charging data sits across multiple platforms and suppliers. Radius One’s single-account model gives businesses a clean, consolidated view of their fleet’s energy consumption – fuel and electric in one place. That visibility is the starting point for any credible transition plan. Businesses that consolidate fleet management under a unified platform can maximise fuel efficiency, increase driver safety, lower their emissions footprint, and reduce costs simultaneously. Critically, that transition is supported by genuine network reach. Radius has built the largest business EV charging network in Ireland, with 96% coverage across the island. For fleet operators, that is not just a headline figure; it means drivers are rarely more than a short drive from a charge point, removing one of the most persistent practical objections to fleet electrification. The transition to electric is not a binary event. Most businesses will run mixed fleets, diesel and unleaded alongside electric, for years yet. The risk in that crossover period is not the technology itself; it is the operational fragmentation that comes with managing two incompatible systems. Radius One is built specifically for that in-between state.
SCALABLE ACROSS EVERY FLEET SIZE One of the more compelling aspects of Radius One is its scalability. Whether you are an SME running two company cars or a logistics operator managing a fleet of heavy goods vehicles across multiple countries, the card and account structure adapts to your needs. Pricing is transparent, with guaranteed discounts or competitive commercial rates for fuel and fixed price EV charging, with price notifications delivered directly to account holders. For the haulage and logistics sector, where cost control, compliance, and operational reliability are non-negotiable, Radius One represents a genuinely compelling proposition. The combination of one of Ireland’s largest fuel and EV networks, real-time account management, and a single-supplier approach to an increasingly complex energy landscape makes it a product worth serious consideration for any fleet manager reviewing their arrangements in 2026. For any company director who has been putting off a review of fleet arrangements because the landscape felt too fragmented and fast-moving, that may be the most persuasive thing about Radius One: it is a product built specifically for the moment Irish businesses are in right now.
BUILDING SOLUTIONS

HOW BUSINESSES IN THE LOGISTICS SECTOR ARE USING TEMPORARY BUILDINGS TO SCALE FASTER Ireland’s logistics industry has boomed in recent years. With the rise in demand for next day services customers often have high expectations for fast delivery. This has made scalable warehousing more important than ever. Across all sectors, organisations are recognising the strategic value of temporary buildings. Their speed, cost and flexibility present a wide range of benefits allowing businesses to react quicker and maximise their on-site space. In an economy where agility is essential, temporary buildings give companies the ability to grow without delay and without locking themselves into long-term commitments.

WHY ARE BUSINESSES TURNING TO TEMPORARY STRUCTURES? Traditional construction, while durable, often brings long lead times, planning hurdles, and significant overhead costs. To stay competitive, businesses are turning to temporary buildings as a smarter, faster alternative. These structures are no longer basic, short-term shelters. Today’s modern temporary buildings are engineered, insulated, regulation-compliant spaces that can be installed in days rather than months.
BUILDING SOLUTIONS
WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM
Companies across Ireland are using them to scale, adapt, and create capacity exactly when it’s needed.
SUPPORTING GROWTH ACROSS IRELAND, ONE STRUCTURE AT A TIME Our temporary and semipermanent solutions provide Instant warehousing for peak seasons allowing our clients to scale their storage and distribution spaces in line with stock requirements. Spaciotempo structures can easily help to expand your existing space. Loading bay extensions help to keep goods moving and additional warehouse space minimises reliance on offsite storage keeping transport costs down and making managing inventory easier. Temporary structures give logistics companies adaptable capacity without committing to permanent infrastructure or costly off-site storage.
BUILDING FLEXIBILITY INTO MODERN LOGISTICS Spaciotempo has seen firsthand how this approach benefits clients in the logistics sector. A key example is MM Freight, who partnered with Spaciotempo to deliver two bespoke modular
buildings at their Craigavon depot. Initially, the requirement was for a fast, cost-effective solution to support growing chilled goods operations. The first structure provided immediate relief, allowing the team to handle increased volumes efficiently. The outcome went beyond
expectation. The success of the initial installation led to a second, larger building being commissioned, both now forming an essential part of MM Freight’s long-term infrastructure. For logistics operators, this demonstrates the advantage temporary buildings provide, giving
you the ability to act quickly, while still supporting long-term growth. Gain the flexibility to adapt as your business grows, without sacrificing quality or operational performance. In an industry defined by constant movement and change, adaptable infrastructure isn’t optional it’s a strategic asset.

LOGISTICS BUSINESSES NEED CERTAINTY IN FACE OF SKY-HIGH FUEL PRICES On 20 May, the UK government announced that it would postpone the scheduled fuel duty rise until the end of the year, alongside introducing a 12-month holiday for HGV Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). As the first business group to call for a delay in the fuel duty rise, Logistics UK and its members welcomed this news, which we see as a lifeline for the logistics sector in the face of rising costs. In fact, our analysis estimates that these moves will save the industry an estimated £34.5 million, alleviating pressures for a sector that already operates on narrow margins and cannot afford any more costs. This is particularly true for businesses operating across Northern Ireland where transport costs are often higher due to geographic and infrastructure constraints.
is essential to the government’s growth agenda and its decision to postpone the planned rise until the end of the year will have a positive effect on economic growth, but our members believe it needs to go further. Logistics UK is calling on the government to delay the scheduled fuel duty rise past 2026, in tandem with ensuring businesses are given a wider package of support to enable them to continue to deliver the goods that keep the country moving, including targeted consideration for Northern Ireland’s unique trading position under post-Brexit arrangements.
The breakout of conflict in the Middle East region and closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one fifth of the world’s oil and gas supplies travel, has been a major contributor to the price of fuel skyrocketing. As an energy-intensive sector, logistics has been especially affected, with businesses paying 29% more for diesel at the pumps between February and May. On the week commencing 30 May, prices peaked at 54.5% higher than the rest of the year and drove up the cost of filling a large HGV to around £1,000 a tank, with operators in Northern Ireland particularly exposed given their reliance on road haulage and ferry connections.
VOLATILITY IN FUEL PRICES REMAINS HIGH
The strain this has placed on logistics businesses, which already pay around £5.5 billion in fuel duty per year, cannot be overstated, as they are having to shift investment plans and fuel purchasing decisions to mitigate the impacts. Logistics

Since the peak in wholesale diesel, prices have fallen but volatility remains high. Even once shipping resumes, disruption to the fuel supply chain is expected to persist, with prices forecast to remain above pre-conflict levels for several months. This is compounded by the fact that diesel is not the only fuel affected. All diesel purchased in the UK is blended with renewable fuel, increasing its vulnerability to price changes. Demand for alternative fuels has also risen, with HVO prices peaking at 16.4% higher than their pre-war level, and between 23 February to 30 March jet fuel prices more than doubled, adding further pressure on air freight routes serving Northern Ireland. Businesses of all sizes have been affected, with 96.6% reporting rises in fuel costs, and customers
experiencing knock-on effects as these costs are passed further down the supply chain. Those in haulage, distribution and parcels/integrators are most likely to experience cost pressures, with almost three quarters of those polled stating they will pass on a large amount of their increased costs to customers*. However, not all businesses have the ability to pass on costs, as this depends on contractual agreements with customers and the timeliness of customer payments. SMEs in particular are more susceptible to sudden cost rises, with limited negotiating power and therefore less resilience. Northern Ireland businesses are also vulnerable because they depend on the road network to move goods in the absence of a working rail freight network, which leaves them with less choice to move goods and restricts the provision of sustainable transportation solutions. In the short term, businesses need relief, particularly to support Northern Ireland’s connectivity with both Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. The measures announced on 20 May mean the sector will pay £34.5 million less in fuel duty in the last four months of 2026, which translates to a £1,010 saving for an SME operator with six large HGVs. The 12-month holiday on HGV VED will result in a £5,472 saving for an operator with six large HGVs*. To ensure that logistics can continue to deliver growth, Logistics UK is pressing for an urgent package
of ongoing support. Additional measures on fuel duty – including scrapping plans to automatically uprate fuel duty by RPI; low carbon fuel; electricity costs and business rates - are critical and will ensure businesses across Northern Ireland can invest for the future while keeping industry and homes stocked with the goods we rely on every day. Adopting these measures will not only support short-term resilience but also encourage longer-term investment, particularly in low carbon fuels and electrification, transitioning to a more sustainable supply chain. The sector needs certainty, to focus on investing for the future while delivering for the economy.
CONCLUSION Delaying the fuel duty rise is a pragmatic measure that will protect a sector that works tirelessly behind the scenes to support every part of the economy, particularly while fuel price volatility is ongoing. As we know, logistics operates on narrow margins and has proved itself resilient in times of high energy costs before, but the sector’s ability to thrive and continue powering the economy is by no means guaranteed. Yet with the right policy framework, sustained public and private investment and closer partnership between government and industry, logistics has the capacity to be a powerful catalyst for growth and resilience across the whole economy.

HOW DO YOU SOLVE HGV DRIVER SHORTAGE? The HGV driver shortage is as old as the hills. Indeed, the failure to recruit and retain new generations of drivers into the profession means the workforce is not much younger than them either! As the RHA has been warning, including in our Intergenerational Workforce Report, we’re in a situation where goods movements are reliant on an aging pool of older drivers. That’s unsustainable and already acting as a constraint on economic growth. When hauliers are having to turn down work because they cannot find staff, that’s a direct cap on moving more goods that reduces growth and productivity across an economy. The problem is global. Recent research from the International Road Transport Union (IRU) found over 3.6 million truck driver positions going unfilled across the world, with half of all operators reporting serious difficulty finding drivers. With 3.4 million truck drivers projected to retire soon, the outlook is grim. That’s the same for the sector in places like Australia, where almost a quarter of drivers are approaching retirement, as it is for Irish and British hauliers. The causes are the same worldwide. Analysis consistently finds high training costs, low levels of driver safety, dire infrastructure, long and unsociable hours, and a poor image of the job itself as key issues. Changing work-life balance expectations are playing a role too. These are the barriers we hear about from RHA members. It’s reassuring and dispiriting in equal measure to know the same conversation is playing out between operators, trade associations and policy makers on every continent, let alone country. That said, if there’s ever a solution, the answers must be local. If Poland, say, developed an effective pathway to train and retain people up as drivers, or South Africa rolled out a fantastic network of driver stops, there may well be much to learn but there would only be a benefit locally, if these were repeated locally. Besides, no country has found a way that works yet (other than reliance on foreign drivers) so policy makers must innovate rather than imitate. For Northern Ireland, its skills and education system are devolved. Looking to Westminster, even under a new Prime Minister with good ideas on vocational training won’t bear fruit. That puts the onus on local councils, colleges and MLAs
in Stormont who, four years on from resuming business, are perhaps still looking to prove their worth. The opportunity to lead is there. As things stand, there is virtually no funding currently going into training up HGV drivers in Northern Ireland. Nothing moves without road haulage, and trucks don’t move without drivers. Especially as rules around visas and cabotage make it harder for the shrinking pool of foreign nationals to service northsouth as well as east-west routes, failing to train up a domestic generation of HGV drivers risks leaving supply chains underserved. But simply calling for funding isn’t likely to be enough, even if it is forthcoming. The RHA is starting work to develop our understanding of Northern Ireland’s driver shortage and how to address it. We are starting from seeking an understanding of the scale of the problem. There are good estimates for the UK-wide
driver shortage thanks to our own research, and for the Republic of Ireland. We have started conversations with authorities in Northern Ireland to try and put a number on its own deficit. Our ongoing conversations with our members are informing a deeper understanding of the problems and will feed into proposed solutions. We do believe the HGV skills bootcamps the RHA secured funding for in England provided a good model but remain open-minded about what approach will work and where else to look for models that might help address this deep-seated issue. Solving the HGV driver shortage is a hard nut to crack. Nowhere else has managed it yet. But if Northern Ireland’s current crop of politicians is keen to prove their worth to our sector, there would be few better ways of proving this than taking this on. The RHA will be stood alongside them if they do.

WORKFORCE FLEXIBILITY IN NORTHERN IRELAND’S HAULAGE AND LOGISTICS SECTOR Short Time Working and Seasonal Employees: Managing Risk Whilst Maintaining Capacity For businesses operating in the haulage and logistics sector, change is one of the few constants. Freight volumes rise and fall in response to seasonal retail demand, agricultural harvests, tourism, manufacturing output, weather disruption, ferry capacity and wider economic conditions. More recently, operators have also had to navigate Brexit related trading arrangements, global supply chain disruption, inflationary pressures and continuing shortages of skilled HGV drivers. Against this backdrop, workforce flexibility has become an increasingly important commercial issue. Many businesses need the ability to respond quickly to temporary reductions or increases in demand without losing experienced employees or incurring unnecessary recruitment costs. Two workforce management tools are frequently considered: short time working and seasonal employment. Used appropriately, both can help businesses remain competitive and resilient. Used incorrectly, however, they can expose employers to significant legal and financial risk.
contractual authority may expose the employer to claims for breach of contract, unlawful deduction from wages or constructive dismissal. For many logistics businesses, one of the most valuable preventative measures is therefore a review of existing employment contracts to ensure they contain modern workforce flexibility provisions appropriate for today’s trading environment.
WHY IT MATTERS TO THE LOGISTICS INDUSTRY
SHORT TIME WORKING: NOT AN AUTOMATIC RIGHT
The transport and logistics sector is particularly susceptible to fluctuating demand.
A common misconception is that employers can simply reduce employees’ working hours whenever business slows.
•
reduced freight volumes immediately after Christmas;
•
increased activity during harvest and food production seasons;
•
temporary disruption to ferry services;
•
loss or commencement of major customer contracts;
•
fluctuations in manufacturing output; and
•
seasonal increases associated with tourism and major events.
That is not the legal position in Northern Ireland. Whether an employer can lawfully introduce short time working will usually depend upon the employment contract. Unless there is an express contractual provision permitting reduced hours or lay off, or the employee agrees to the change, the employer will generally remain contractually obliged to provide work and pay normal contractual wages. Introducing reduced hours without the necessary
66
EXPORT&FREIGHT
Examples include:
Rather than making permanent redundancies whenever workloads decline, many
employers understandably wish to retain experienced staff until business recovers. Given the continuing shortage of qualified HGV drivers, this often represents sound commercial decision making.
CONSULTATION IS GOOD BUSINESS PRACTICE Even where an employment contract permits short time working, consultation with employees remains extremely important. Explaining the commercial reasons for the proposed arrangements, the anticipated duration and the intention to restore normal working hours when trading improves will often help maintain employee confidence and reduce the likelihood of disputes. Employers should also ensure that any decisions are applied consistently and supported by objective business reasons. Decisions that appear arbitrary or inconsistent may increase the risk of employment claims.
STATUTORY RIGHTS MUST NOT BE OVERLOOKED Employers should remember that periods of lay off or short time working may trigger statutory rights under the Employment Rights (Northern Ireland) Order 1996. Employees may become entitled to statutory guarantee payments for qualifying workless days, subject to the applicable statutory limits. In addition, prolonged periods of lay off or short time working may ultimately enable employees to claim statutory redundancy payments, provided the legislative conditions and notice procedures are satisfied. For that reason, employers should keep
LEGAL
WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM all temporary arrangements under regular review and seek advice before allowing such arrangements to continue for lengthy periods.
SEASONAL EMPLOYMENT For many logistics businesses, seasonal recruitment represents an even more effective solution. Predictable increases in demand during Christmas, Black Friday, agricultural harvesting, tourism and major events frequently justify the engagement of employees under properly drafted fixed term or seasonal contracts. Such arrangements enable businesses to increase operational capacity without permanently increasing payroll costs. To minimise legal risk, seasonal contracts should clearly specify: •
the commencement and termination dates (or the event upon which the contract ends);
•
the reason for the temporary engagement;
•
working hours;
•
overtime arrangements;
•
annual leave entitlement; and
•
notice provisions.
Employers should also monitor repeated renewals of seasonal contracts, as continuity of employment may arise over time with corresponding statutory rights.
THE COMMERCIAL BENEFITS When implemented correctly, short time working and seasonal recruitment can deliver significant commercial advantages. These include: retaining experienced drivers and warehouse staff; •
avoiding unnecessary recruitment and training costs;
•
improving cash flow during temporary downturns;
•
maintaining customer service levels;
•
responding quickly to changes in demand; and
•
strengthening long term operational resilience.
For many employers, retaining experienced staff during a temporary downturn is considerably less expensive than recruiting replacements once business recovers.
COMMON PITFALLS Some of the most common mistakes made by employers include: •
introducing reduced hours without contractual authority;
•
failing to consult employees adequately;
•
overlooking statutory guarantee payment obligations;
•
failing to monitor redundancy entitlement thresholds;
•
relying upon outdated employment contracts; and
•
failing to document the commercial reasons for management decisions.
1. Does every affected employee’s contract expressly allow short time working or lay off? If not, introducing reduced hours without agreement could amount to a breach of contract.
2. Is the reduction in work genuinely temporary? Short time working is generally intended to address temporary fluctuations in demand. Where a downturn is likely to be permanent, redundancy consultation may be the more appropriate course of action.
3. Have we properly consulted with our employees? Clear communication about the commercial reasons for the proposal, its anticipated duration and the review process will often reduce uncertainty and improve employee engagement.
4. Have we considered the statutory consequences? Employers should understand their obligations in relation to statutory guarantee payments and monitor carefully whether employees may acquire statutory redundancy rights following prolonged periods of short time working.
5. Are we keeping proper written records? Documenting the commercial rationale, consultation process and subsequent reviews will assist the business in demonstrating that decisions were taken reasonably, consistently and in accordance with good employment practice.
LOOKING AHEAD The current statutory framework continues to provide important protections for employees whilst allowing employers a degree of operational flexibility. Nevertheless, there is a strong case for modernising official guidance to reflect the realities facing sectors such as haulage and logistics, where fluctuating demand is an inherent feature of trading. A dedicated Northern Ireland Code of Practice on short time working and temporary lay off could provide welcome clarity for employers, particularly small and medium sized businesses that may not have access to in house legal or human resources expertise.
CONCLUSION Workforce flexibility is no longer simply an operational issue. It is a strategic business priority. For Northern Ireland’s haulage and logistics sector, short time working and seasonal employment can provide effective mechanisms for managing fluctuating demand, retaining skilled employees and controlling costs. However, they must be implemented carefully, supported by appropriate contractual provisions and operated in accordance with the statutory framework. Businesses that review their employment contracts regularly, communicate openly with their workforce and seek advice before introducing significant changes will be better placed to navigate future economic uncertainty whilst protecting both their employees and their business.

RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN SPIRITS OF 2026 EXPORT & FREIGHT GOLF MASTERS The 2026 Export & Freight Golf Masters returned to the magnificent Lough Erne Resort, near Enniskillen, where players once again enjoyed a fantastic day of golf, hospitality and networking. While the weather presented its own challenges, it certainly failed to dampen the spirits of everyone who took part. This was the thirteenth year of the annual golf event, which has firmly established itself into the calendar of many in the transport and logistics sector from not just here – but across the UK and Ireland. And as always the luxurious Lough Erne was home to this unique event held in early June every year.
most famous, and most celebrated public houses. The first call was Old Pals Bar Derrygonnelly, followed by visits to The Linnet Inn, Boho and then onto The Dog & Duck Inn before returning to the hotel. By early evening the last golfers were approaching the end of their rounds, and the non-golfers accompanied by Marty, Golda and Sarah were arriving back from their foodie tour of Fermanagh.
Running a week later than usual, the event attracted golfers and non-golfers alike to the Fermanagh Lakelands for three days of golf, networking and craic. From mid-morning on Wednesday, trucks and trailers from event sponsors start to arrive and are strategically parked up outside the clubhouse, with guests arriving from around lunchtime to get ‘into the swing of things’ and perhaps squeeze in a sneaky practice round ahead of the main competition on Thursday. The weather forecast for this year was far from ideal, with plenty of rain and grey clouds about but that didn’t seem to bother anyone too much. As always, the Faldo Course was in spectacular shape, and the hotel is simply in a class of its own, with wonderful staff greeting everyone as returning friends which many of us are at this stage. Wednesday afternoon was a fairly damp affair, but as if by magic the sun came out in the early evening as sponsors, and their guests, headed down to the Golf Academy for the ‘Sponsor’s Night’. Hosted as always by resident professional Damian Mooney the night was compered by Adrian Logan on the microphone, with sidekick Albert Kirk on the camera. This is always an

entertaining few hours - with a few drinks, excellent food and a bit of golf thrown in. After the golf is over its back up to the hotel for a ‘night cap’, as many golfers have an early start on the Thursday morning. To say the 2026 Golf Masters was wet might be something of an understatement. As someone who was first on the course at 8.10am, I can confirm conditions were damp underfoot but this didn’t dent either the enthusiasm of the golfers, or the welcome received by the golfers from the sponsors on the tee boxes. Golfers are a well-prepared group and most have all the waterproofs, hats, umbrellas and everything you need to cope with any conditions. The showers passed through, and there were moments of brightness throughout what was ultimately a great day of golf.
After everyone had the chance to get changed it was down to the Ballroom for the Gala dinner and presentation of prizes. And a fantastic £1,750 was raised for the evening’s charity partner ‘Breaker Breaker’, supporting mental health in the transport industry. Thank you to all who contributed for their generosity. As always this event simply wouldn’t work without the hard working staff of the Lough Erne Resort, so a huge thanks to Alison and Clare. And also to Barry, Roy, Darren and the entire team at the Golf Club for looking after all the golfers, the scores and everything golf related. It is thanks to them that the event runs so smoothly, and why are golfers return to this event year after year. A special mention to Jenna and Annie from the North-West News Group, who went around the course and interviewed all the sponsors at the holes, and brought a smile to all they met.
This year the non-golfing event was another local food and drink extravaganza hosted by Enniskillen’s Mark Edwards.
And, of course, thanks to Adrian and Albert, with Gary in the background, for the entertaining videos made chatting to the golfers during their rounds in the rain.
The trip took guests to a number of Fermanagh’s

As part of the pre-press conference at its production site for box vehicles in Vreden, Schmitz Cargobull gave the trade press exclusive insights into its product and service innovations. For Schmitz Cargobull, ‘More.Value’ means consistently thinking about transport solutions from the customer’s point of view – from the vehicle to the digital solutions and the services. Under the title ‘Creating More Value’ the focus of this year’s pre-press conference was
both product innovations and the consistent expansion of the digital and serviceoriented offering. This includes, among other things, the further development of production processes towards the Smart Factory, as implemented with the new assembly line for the S.KO COOL in Vreden. Addressing the pre-press conference Andreas Schmitz, CEO of Schmitz Cargobull AG, said their primary focus was on innovation, and reliability – ‘creating more value to our customers’.

Ralph Kleideiter, Chief Sales Officer, Schmitz Cargobull.
Andreas Schmitz, CEO Schmitz Cargobull addressed the media briefing in Vreden.
Mr Schmitz said it was a pretty tough market for manufacturers at the moment, with inflation going up for producers like them. But he said they are keeping their level of investment high and are investing in a facility in Romania, where they are producing tippers and curtainsiders, and also in their German plants.
Schmitz Cargobull is globally acting in over 40 countries across all five continents and has over 6,000 employees but is still a family-run company, now in its fourth generation.
Schmitz Cargobull continues to invest in product development, its production network, advancing digitalisation to improve reliability, efficiency and uptime for customers.
• Innovation - Developing solutions for evolving customer requirements:
Schmitz Cargobull’s investment in Germany includes the Vreden plant - where their new assembly line will produce ‘smart trailers from a smart factory’.
• Global Presence - Growing with customers in international markets:
“We are improving operational efficiency and cost discipline to maintain the financial flexibility required to invest in products and services that deliver more value for our customers in daily operations.” In the financial year 2025-2026 the company had a turnover of 2,252 million euro. The company has produced over 175,000 active telematics units and over 38,000 transport cooling units.
Andreas Schmitz said the company has developed a strategy based on three pillars of Innovation, Partnerships and having a Global Presence.
• Partnerships - Expanding customer value through strategic partnerships:
In the field of temperature-controlled transport, Schmitz Cargobull is underlining its claim as a system provider with the S.KO COOL refrigerated semi-trailer in combination with the new S.CU dc90 transport refrigeration unit - as well as other innovations in the transport refrigeration unit segment, including the multi-temp solution S.CU mt-DualEvap.
MYCARGOBULL – DIGITAL FLEET AND SERVICE MANAGEMENT PLATFORM Schmitz Cargobull has launched MyCargobull, a centralised digital portal designed to simplify fleet and service management for customers with service contracts. The platform provides a single point of access for contract information, maintenance schedules, repair histories, vehicle documentation and spare parts ordering. Automated maintenance reminders, service partner search functions and real-time updates on service requests help operators improve efficiency and reduce administration. Available free of charge in 18 languages, MyCargobull aims to support more effective fleet management and streamline daily operations through improved visibility and connectivity.

the Cargobull Operating System (COS) as a digital platform, the new Cargobull Trailer Diagnostics diagnostic software and the MyCargobull customer portal, Schmitz Cargobull is creating the basis for efficient, networked and transparent fleet processes. This offer is supplemented by the further expanded Mobile Van Service which enables maintenance, repair and technical support directly at the customer’s site. With this holistic range of efficient vehicle solutions, digital networking and comprehensive services, Schmitz Cargobull supports its customers throughout the entire operational cycle. From investment to recycling, thus offering sustainable added value – in line with the theme: “Experience More.Value.” “We are bringing our products across the globe and we will continue investing. Customer requirements are changing and we will give them the data they need. We want to continue to grow our cooling technologies” said Andreas Schmitz. Across Europe, Schmitz Cargobull provide reliable and innovative solutions for evolving customer requirements
CARGOBULL TRAILER DIAGNOSTICS – FASTER WORKSHOP PROCESSES The new Cargobull Trailer Diagnostics software has been developed to accelerate diagnostics and maintenance procedures while increasing trailer uptime. Fully integrated into the Schmitz Cargobull Operating System (COS), the Windows-based application offers guided fault-finding, transparent error reporting and estimated repair times, helping technicians resolve issues more quickly. The system also supports overthe-air software updates via TrailerConnect®, reducing workshop visits and ensuring vehicles remain up to date. By automating update notifications and simplifying diagnostics, Schmitz Cargobull says the solution will lower service costs and improve vehicle availability.

SMART FACTORY IN VREDEN: NEW ASSEMBLY LINE FOR THE S.KO COOL Start of series production with integrated Body Control Unit (BCU) Schmitz Cargobull is taking another major step towards the factory of the future with the launch of a state-of-the-art assembly line at its Vreden manufacturing plant. The investment marks a significant milestone in the company’s drive towards fully intelligent, digitally networked production and paves the way for series production of the all-new S.KO COOL refrigerated trailer. Making its international debut at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, the next-generation reefer is set to showcase the manufacturer’s latest advances in efficiency, connectivity and refrigerated transport technology. The new assembly line takes industrial production at the Vreden plant to a new level. Automated production processes ensure the highest level of precision and reliability. Digital process control further improves product quality and minimises error rates. At the same time, the production of the refrigerated bodies is consistently geared towards an optimised K-value and meets the strictest quality standards as well as certifications according to national and international specifications. Thanks to the modular design and digital control, production
can react flexibly to different requirements. Energy-efficient processes, the targeted reduction of CO2 emissions and the responsible use of resources are firmly anchored in the manufacturing strategy. This is complemented by clear social responsibility with fair working conditions and strong regional added value. At the heart of the smart factory is the consistent use of Industry 4.0 technologies. The
use of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics enables intelligent, networked manufacturing. This increases efficiency and transparency across the entire value creation process and has a direct impact on product quality and availability for customers who benefit from innovative, high-performance and economical vehicle solutions.
BCU At the Vreden plant, the Body Control Unit (BCU) is installed as standard in all S.KO semi-trailers of the current generation. At the same time, the roll-out in the international production network has already begun: The BCU is the central control element in the trailer and ensures greater operational readiness in temperature-controlled transport. It networks all relevant systems and creates the basis for additional digital functions. In conjunction with the S.CU chiller, the BCU improves the compatibility of the trailer and chiller. Functions such as interior monitoring, door locking and status data are centrally controlled and displayed transparently. The battery charge level of the S.CU can be called up easily at any time in the TrailerConnect® portal – for predictable maintenance, more operating time and a sustainable, future-proof investment. The higher operational reliability means significant added value for fleet operators. The new S.KO COOL is even more efficient and reliable in daily use – a decisive advantage in temperature-controlled transport.

CONNECTED ECOSYSTEM OF OUR PORTS KEEPS TRADE FLOWING Trade never stands still - and neither do the businesses that keep it moving. As supply chains continue to adapt to changing market demands, evolving regulations and increasing pressure to deliver goods faster, cleaner and more efficiently, Ireland’s ports remain at the centre of the country’s trading success. Every day, thousands of tonnes of freight pass through their gates, connecting Irish businesses with customers and suppliers across Great Britain, mainland Europe and global markets. international transport networks while keeping goods flowing with minimal disruption.
The past few years have reshaped the logistics landscape. Brexit, geopolitical uncertainty and the drive towards decarbonisation have all influenced how goods move, prompting significant investment in port infrastructure, digital systems and new shipping services.
Together, ports and logistics providers form a highly connected ecosystem that is fundamental to Ireland’s economy. Their collaboration ensures manufacturers can source materials, retailers can stock their shelves and exporters can reach customers around the world with confidence.
Our Ports have responded by strengthening connectivity, improving resilience and expanding their capabilities to meet the needs of an increasingly dynamic trading environment. But successful trade depends on far more than ships arriving on time. Behind every consignment is a team of logistics professionals ensuring cargo reaches its destination efficiently and compliantly. FACE TO FACE WITH JOE O’NEILL CBE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, BELFAST HARBOUR
DRIVING TRADE. POWERING GROWTH. From delivering record investment to championing sustainability and securing Belfast Harbour’s place at the centre of international trade, Joe O’Neill CBE has helped shape one of Northern Ireland’s greatest economic success stories. Export & Freight recently sat down with the Belfast Harbour Chief Executive Officer to discuss leadership, legacy and the opportunities that lie ahead.
1. You took up the role of Chief Executive at Belfast Harbour during a period of significant change. What have been your key priorities since stepping into the position? When I took up the role of CEO back in 2018, I was acutely aware that Belfast Harbour has a rich history of delivery and development for the benefit of its stakeholders, the city and the wider region. A priority for me was therefore not only to protect that rich history and track record but also to continue, and perhaps accelerate, the pace of delivery and development, recognising the wider economic and social benefits from our investments. I have now led on the development of two 5-year strategic plans, with our most recent – entitled Advancing Regional Prosperity - launched in January 2025; this features a major £313m investment plan, the majority of which is focussed on port investment. As well as laying out our plans for maintaining and accelerating our delivery and development, these plans have also reflected our wider ambition and commitment towards operating our port and estate as safely as possible, to the highest environmental standards, and in the most collaborative and transparent manner possible.
2. Belfast Harbour is a major economic driver for Northern Ireland. How do you see its role evolving over the next decade in supporting regional growth and international trade? Belfast Harbour plays a major role in the economy of Northern Ireland, with a 2025 economic contribution analysis by Ulster University Economic Policy Centre assessing that the port handles £26.7 billion of trade annually, supporting £8.8bn in total Gross Value Added (GVA) to the regional economy - which equates to 15.7% of NI’s total economic output - as well as155,000 jobs.

BORDER, PORT & FREIGHT SOLUTIONS
As trade has increased and the city around us has changed, so too has Belfast Harbour’s role evolved, and will continue to do so. Ports are required to take a long-term view of their capacity and ability to support long-term economic growth in order to ensure that they are not a ‘brake’ on the local economy. Such outlooks often extend beyond a single decade and in Belfast Harbour’s case we have adopted a 25-year vision through our recently-launched 202550 Masterplan, which details £1.3 billion of investment in port infrastructure. In addition to the ongoing provision of capacity to support existing trades, the Masterplan identifies clear opportunities for Belfast Harbour to play an even greater role in the transition to clean energy, decarbonising our economy and society, supporting tourism and promoting regeneration in alignment with City and Regional plans. External forecasts prepared by port masterplanning experts Haskoning also indicate that annual trade volumes through Belfast Harbour could increase from around 24 million tonnes today to over 30 million tonnes by 2050 under a steady growth scenario, and to between 40 million and 50 million tonnes under highergrowth scenarios. Therefore, we need to make decisions today to ensure that we’re prepared for the future. That’s why we have mapped out a series of major port infrastructure projects to position Belfast Harbour as the principal maritime gateway on the east coast of Ireland.
3. The logistics and supply chain sectors continue to face challenges and opportunities. How is Belfast Harbour adapting to changing trade patterns and customer demands? We are consistently investing in major infrastructure to ensure that trade moves efficiently through the port. Most recently,
Belfast Harbour Victoria Terminal 3.
we welcomed the arrival of a brand new £4.5m bulk crane which is now operating on Stormont Wharf. The addition of this new technology will improve performance, resilience and efficiency for Belfast Harbour’s customers, with the capability to operate across a wide range of vessels and cargo types. Cargoes, including grain, animal feeds and coal make up around 25% of imports and exports to and from Belfast Harbour, so we are investing to protect this trade for the benefit of port users and customers. We are also committed to working with logistics partners to establish what they need for trade to run smoothly. In 2024, we invested in a new chilled warehouse facility on West Bank Road, which has been leased to logistics firm Manfreight. Over the past decade, we have seen requirements change in the logistics market, with occupiers requiring more modern, energy efficient facilities, and this site presented an opportunity to construct an occupier-led, purpose-built warehouse
in an ideal location within the Harbour Estate, close to the main ferry terminals. In our 2025-50 Masterplan, we have also outlined proposals for a logistics park near Belfast City Airport which will expand capacity for freight and advanced logistics.
4. Sustainability is high on the agenda across the maritime industry. What investments and initiatives is Belfast Harbour undertaking to support decarbonisation and Net Zero ambitions? We are currently on track to achieve net zero operational emissions ahead of our 2030 target, having reduced operational carbon by 70 per cent since 2015, and we are on course to be the first net zero port operator on the island of Ireland. In recent years, we have prioritised direct emissions reduction through energy efficiency, electrification and fuel switching.

Last year, we transitioned three cranes to operate on Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO). By the end of 2026, we are aiming for all landside assets to operate on HVO. We’ve also installed new charging infrastructure at the Harbour Office in partnership with electric vehicle charging network company Weev, with further facilities planned at our operational base at Milewater Basin
5. Belfast Harbour has an ambitious programme of investment across its estate and port operations. Which projects are you most excited about and why? Our Masterplan sets out a wide variety of investment projects but there are two in particular that I am excited about, one which will protect and grow a significant existing trade sector and the second which will enhance our role and opportunity in the clean energy sector. The first project is the rebuild of Stormont Wharf, the longest deepwater quay and berth in any port on the island, and our primary facility for the handling of our one of our principal commodities, the import of grain and animal feed products. Build in stages in the 1960s and 1970s, the wharf is effectively the start of the food supply chain for the region’s vital agrifood sector. Given the age of the wharf, we are now ramping up our project delivery team to assess how we can maintain operations whilst at the same time designing and constructing a new wharf and deeper berth. It will be an exciting but also challenging engineering project for our experienced engineering team and is likely to be our largest-ever capital project. The second project is our provision of port capacity to support the transition to clean energy, notably for the installation of offshore windfarms. We have an established track record in this sector through our £50m investment in 2013 in the provision of a dedicated offshore assembly and installation site at D1, off Airport Road West. Opportunities exist to provide further capacity for this sector and

to enhance the capability of our existing facility, which represents an important and exciting project for not just Belfast Harbour but the wider supply chain in this sector.
office scheme, and a planning application has been submitted for the £222m Clarendon Wharf residential development, which will deliver around 600 homes.
6. The Harbour Estate has become a significant destination for business, leisure and tourism. How important is property development to Belfast Harbour’s long-term strategy?
7. Skills and workforce development are critical challenges across transport and logistics. How is Belfast Harbour investing in attracting and developing the next generation of talent?
Belfast Harbour is first and foremost a working port, and all other activity is based around our port operations. However, in our 2025-50 Masterplan we have identified property development and regeneration opportunities, requiring additional investment of between £500 million and £750 million. We are actively exploring the delivery models and commercial partnerships needed to bring these projects forward. We are fully committed to ensuring the Harbour Estate is a vibrant place for people to live and work. We’ve seen great success with our City Quays 1, 2 and 3 office developments. Planning permission has already been granted for the City Quays 4 residential scheme and City Quays 5
We are proud to be partnering with Belfast Metropolitan College and Port Training Services to introduce Northern Ireland’s first Level 2 Port Operations Apprenticeship Framework. The programme is designed to enhance skills development within the region’s expanding maritime and logistics sector. The recognised framework will blend hands-on, workplace training with classroom-based learning, equipping employees with industry-relevant skills while helping employers improve capability, efficiency, and safety standards. As part of Horizon 1 of our 2025-50 Masterplan, we have also proposed the development of a Maritime Skills Academy,

ensuring that the talent pipeline is in place to support our growth. The academy will equip a new generation with the technical skills required for port operations, offshore energy and specialised logistics. Training will align with emerging industry demand, ensuring that local talent can access high-quality, long-term employment as the port evolves for inclusive growth.
8. Looking at emerging technologies, from digitalisation to AI and automation, how do you see innovation shaping the future of port operations? Belfast Harbour has built a reputation for being an innovative organisation, and we intend to continue to explore the latest technologies to improve port efficiency, resilience and competitiveness. In Horizon 1 of our Masterplan, we intend to lay the groundwork to become a future-ready digital port, building upon our investment to create the first 5G private network in a port on these islands. Our objective is an integrated, data-driven operating model that improves safety, productivity and resilience. By 2029, Belfast Harbour will be stronger, more resilient and digitally enabled.
grain and animal feeds sector. Working closely with key customers, including W&R Barnett and Cefetra Limited, we invested in infrastructure that has helped establish Belfast Harbour as the principal port on the island of Ireland for these commodities.
traditional strengths has allowed us to make an even greater contribution to the economic development of the city and region, creating opportunities for businesses, communities and future generations.
Another significant milestone was the relocation of the Belfast–Loch Ryan service from Albert Quay to Victoria Terminal 4. In partnership with Stena Line, this enabled the introduction of much larger RoPax vessels and strengthened Belfast’s position as Northern Ireland’s leading RoRo port. It was a project that demonstrated the value of strategic investment and long-term collaboration. I am also particularly proud of the development of our D1 offshore wind assembly and installation facility. Working with Ørsted, the world’s largest offshore wind energy company, Belfast Harbour was able to play a key role in supporting the growth of renewable energy and helping position Northern Ireland within an important global industry.
Equally important has been the growth of our own organisation. Building a strong team, attracting talented people and creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce are achievements that are every bit as rewarding as the physical developments around the harbour. As for influence, I have been fortunate throughout my career to work alongside outstanding colleagues, customers and partners who have challenged, supported and inspired me. The achievements I am most proud of have always been collective efforts, and I have learned that lasting success comes through collaboration, shared ambition and having the confidence to invest in the future.
More broadly, I take great pride in the diversification of Belfast Harbour’s activities over the years. Expanding beyond our
9. Congratulations on being awarded your CBE in the King’s Birthday Honours for your contribution to business and the community in Belfast. Looking back over your career, what moments make you most proud, and who has influenced you most along the way? Looking back over my career, I am proudest of the role Belfast Harbour has played in supporting the growth and transformation of both the city and the wider regional economy. Much of that success has been built through strong partnerships and a willingness to invest for the long term. One of the achievements I look back on with particular satisfaction is the rationalisation and development of new facilities for the

BORDER COMPLIANCE IS ENTERING A NEW ERA The introduction of full ICS2 / ELO enforcement for road freight has marked another significant step in the evolution of Europe’s external borders. While operators have spent considerable time adapting to the new Entry Summary Declaration (ENS) requirements, the challenge facing international hauliers has moved beyond simply understanding the regulations. Increasingly, success is measured by how efficiently border formalities can be completed while keeping freight moving. Across Europe, customs authorities are placing greater emphasis on the accuracy, completeness and timely submission of border declarations. As customs systems become digitised and interconnected, the consequences of getting it wrong have become increasingly significant. Administrative errors can lead to delays, rejected movements, additional inspections and, in some cases, financial penalties. For operators working to tight schedules, the commercial cost of non-compliance has never been greater. For freight moving from Great Britain into the European Union, compliance rarely involves a single declaration. Depending on the movement, operators may require an ICS2 Entry Summary Declaration (ENS), a Transit Document or ATA Carnet, together with France’s Enveloppe Logistique Obligatoire (ELO) to facilitate Smart Border crossings. Each requirement has its own timescales and dependencies, creating
106

additional pressure on transport teams operating in an increasingly demanding environment. One of the biggest operational challenges is that border administration has effectively become a twenty-four-hour operation. International freight moves around the clock, yet customs formalities must still be completed accurately and at the right time, regardless of when a vehicle reaches the border. Many transport operators do not have dedicated customs staff available overnight or at weekends, leaving them under increasing pressure to manage time-critical documentation outside normal office hours. The relationship between Transit Documents and the French Smart Border process illustrates this perfectly. An ELO cannot be finalised until a Transit Document has been physically issued, meaning operators often find themselves working against the clock once a driver has collected the document. Every additional
minute spent completing administrative formalities is another minute the vehicle is waiting instead of continuing its journey. Recognising these operational pressures, Motis has developed an Express Border Service designed to bring multiple border formalities together into a single managed process. Operating twenty-four hours a day from both Dover FSA and Cheriton Parc, adjacent to the Eurotunnel terminal, Motis typically processes Transit Documents and ATA Carnets within thirty minutes, helping operators complete essential border formalities quickly before continuing their journey via either the short sea crossings or the Channel Tunnel. Rather than treating each border requirement as a separate transaction, Motis can integrate Transit Documents, ATA Carnet processing, ICS2 ENS declarations, ELO preparation and driver support into one coordinated workflow. By preparing documentation in advance

wherever possible and managing each stage of the process through a single experienced customs team, operators benefit from faster turnaround times, reduced administration and greater confidence that every element of the border process has been completed correctly. The advantages extend beyond speed. Bringing multiple customs processes together reduces the risk of administrative errors, improves operational resilience and provides transport managers with access to specialist customs support whenever their vehicles are moving. In an environment where enforcement is becoming increasingly robust and the commercial consequences of delays continue to grow; reliable border expertise is becoming just as important as regulatory compliance itself. Close links with the Governmental authorities
on a day-to-day basis ensure that Motis remain at the forefront of good compliance practice. Of course, should the need arise, Motis are more than able to assist with individual components of this process and have online systems that allow you to complete yourself very easily or they can do it on your behalf, but the full value is recognised when all the components can be brought together. Motis is also able to integrate other factors outside of the customs sphere to further add value, such as Cross channel ferry
bookings and secure overnight parking. International freight has always depended on efficient border crossings. As customs procedures continue to evolve, the operators who will be best placed to succeed will be those able to combine compliance with speed, accuracy and dependable operational support. By delivering integrated customs services around the clock from both Motis Dover FSA and Cheriton Parc (Folkestone), Motis is helping transport operators turn an increasingly complex border process into a more efficient part of the supply chain.

LARNE PORT – KEEPING NORTHERN IRELAND CONNECTED Larne Port continues to strengthen its position as one of Northern Ireland’s most important freight gateways, combining the shortest sea crossing to Great Britain with expanding Irish Sea connectivity. Ireland, including essential supplies such as fresh food, medicines and other time-sensitive cargoes.
From mid-July 2026, the port will further enhance its network with the launch of a new yearround service to the Isle of Man. Operated by the Ben-my-Chree, the route will offer three weekly sailings every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, creating a dependable link for both freight and passengers while supporting growing trade and tourism between Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man.
Supporting these ferry operations is a modern, well-equipped port infrastructure. Around 40 acres of trailer and vehicle parking, an experienced workforce and a fleet of modern tugmasters enable Larne to efficiently handle both accompanied and unaccompanied freight. Fast check-in procedures and dedicated facilities for HGV drivers further enhance the customer experience.
The new route complements Larne Port’s long-established freight operations and reinforces its reputation as a strategic hub for businesses moving goods across the Irish Sea. Situated just 30 minutes from Belfast and around two and a half hours from Dublin, Larne handles approximately 250,000 commercial vehicles every year. At the heart of its operations is P&O Ferries’ busy Larne-Cairnryan service, providing the fastest ferry crossing between Northern Ireland and Great Britain in just two hours. P&O Ferries operates its dependable RoPax vessels, European Highlander and European Causeway, on the North Channel route every day of the week. With up to six return sailings daily-rising to seven during the busy summer season-the

service offers freight operators exceptional flexibility and reliability. The route’s combination of the shortest crossing time and efficient drive-through loading and discharge allows drivers to minimise time at sea and maximise productivity on the road. Frequent departures, competitive pricing and straightforward online booking continue to make Larne a preferred choice for hauliers transporting goods between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
“We generally have six ferry arrivals and departures per day, increasing to seven crossings during the summer months,” explains Tom McKay, Harbour Master for Larne and Cairnryan. The two RoPax ferries carry both passengers and freight, accommodating up to 440 passengers per sailing while transporting substantial freight volumes. Together they move around 15 per cent of all goods entering and leaving Northern
Beyond its core ferry business, Larne Port continues to diversify. Its deep-water harbour, extensive quay space and available land make it well suited to handling specialist and project cargoes. In recent years, the port has become increasingly involved in supporting the offshore renewable energy sector, welcoming vessels transporting wind farm components and servicing offshore installations across the Irish Sea. With continued investment, expanding route options and a focus on operational efficiency, Larne Port remains a vital gateway for Northern Ireland’s importers, exporters and logistics sector, ensuring fast, reliable connections to Great Britain and beyond.

COMBILIFT HAS THE RIGHT SOLUTIONS TO MEET MATERIAL HANDLING NEEDS AT PORTS Since its founding in 1998, Combilift has transformed the material-handling sector through customer-driven, space-saving solutions, with more than 100,000 machines now operating in 85 countries worldwide. Ports and terminals face increasing pressure to handle a wide variety of loads efficiently, safely and sustainably. Containers, oversized cargo, long and bulky materials all present unique challenges due to their differing dimensions, weights and handling requirements. Inefficient cargo movement can disrupt logistics flows, reduce productivity and increase the risk of damage. Combilift’s range of heavyduty handling equipment has been developed specifically to address these challenges. Its solutions enable operators to lift, transport and store oversized and non-standard loads while maximising available space and improving operational efficiency. Space constraints remain one of the biggest challenges for ports and terminals. Congested storage yards, restricted stacking areas and the movement of cargo between quay and warehouse all require highly manoeuvrable equipment capable of operating effectively within tight footprints. One of Combilift’s flagship solutions for these environments is the Combi-SC straddle carrier. Designed for lifting and transporting containers and oversized loads, the Combi-SC offers a significantly lower unladen weight than many conventional heavy-duty container handlers. This, in turn, enables operation on poor or semi-rough surfaces without the need for expensive resurfacing or infrastructure upgrades, providing a practical solution for operators looking to expand capacity without undertaking major capital projects. Additional advantages include low fuel consumption, threewheel manoeuvrability and excellent operator visibility from the operator’s cab. The Combi-SC is also available with remote-control operation, providing greater flexibility for specific handling applications.
112

a commitment to developing tailored solutions for complex material-handling challenges. A recent example is the COMBISC 3-HIGH Container Handler, developed in partnership with Australian container storage specialist FBT Transwest, which was seeking a safer, more space-efficient method for stacking containers.
The multidirectional C-Series forklift, ideal for the safe and efficient handling of long, bulky loads.
STREAMLINING CARGO MOVEMENT Efficient cargo flow does not stop at the quayside. For many ports, transporting goods from vessel to warehouse often involves multiple handling stages and the use of shunt lorries, creating additional costs, congestion and delays. Combilift’s C-Series range of multidirectional forklifts offers an alternative approach. With load capacities of up to 25 tonnes, the C-Series effectively combines the capabilities of three different types of forklift into a single machine – counterbalance, narrow aisle and sideloader -, reducing fleet requirements and eliminating unnecessary double handling. This enables cargo to move directly from ship to warehouse without intermediate transfers, improving turnaround times, reducing waiting periods and streamlining overall port operations. The C-Series is specifically engineered for the safe and efficient handling of long and bulky loads in confined areas. Its multidirectional capability allows sideways travel, enabling operators to manoeuvre lengthy products through narrow aisles and restricted spaces without overhead
carrying. The result is improved safety, reduced risk of collisions and more effective utilisation of valuable warehouse space.
SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH EFFICIENT DESIGN Sustainability continues to be a key priority across the logistics sector. A major benefit of the Combi-SC range is its lightweight design, which contributes to exceptional fuel efficiency. Large puncture-proof flotation tyres minimise ground pressure, enabling operation on a wide variety of surfaces while reducing site preparation requirements. By eliminating the need for extensive ground improvements and enabling more efficient use of existing storage areas, operators can reduce both operational costs and environmental impact. Optimised storage density also helps avoid unnecessary greenfield expansion, further lowering the carbon footprint of logistics facilities.
The result is a purposebuilt machine capable of stacking containers three high while maximising storage density and maintaining the highest safety standards. The machine features an eightwheel design that delivers low ground pressure and enhanced stability, allowing operation on a variety of surfaces without causing damage. Safety remains central to the design, with a fully enclosed operator cabin, enlarged glazing for improved visibility and load-specific lift speeds that help ensure safe handling under all operating conditions. For ports facing growing cargo volumes, tighter operational margins and increasing pressure to improve sustainability, the ability to maximise existing infrastructure has become a critical competitive advantage. By reducing ground preparation requirements, optimising storage density and improving cargo flow, innovative handling solutions can help operators increase throughput while controlling both capital investment and operating costs.
INNOVATION DRIVEN BY CUSTOMER COLLABORATION

CLdN to expand Ireland services Earlier this year, CLdN announced the acquisition of the UK and Ireland door-to-door and quay-to-quay activities of Samskip. This transaction will provide customers with an even broader array of options for freight connections between mainland Europe, Ireland and the UK. CLdN currently offers 24 direct sailings per week between the Irish ports of Dublin and Cork and the European mainland (Rotterdam, Zeebrugge and Santander). Once regulatory clearance is confirmed and the deal is closed, CLdN will also be able to provide customers with dedicated container connections to the ports of Waterford and Belfast as well as additional sailings to Dublin and Cork. This will provide increased operational flexibility and sailing frequency for customers as well as further reductions in CO2 emissions per unit. The new offering is fully aligned with CLdN’s strategy of providing complementary roll-
