I don’t have a crystal ball so I can’t be certain, but I think it might be too hot in July and August so we should focus on indoor events. Fortunately, there are plenty — from live simulcasts at Malco, plays, and film series to art openings. It is always exciting to announce a new art space — check out designshop on July 23. If you have never been to the Memphis Listening Lab you are missing a unique Memphis treasure; go for a WYXR Stereo Session or just go anytime on your own. Breaking news: there’s blues in the Delta. Okay, maybe that is not news, but since 1988 the Sunflower River Blues & Gospel Festival has made for an outstanding day trip from Memphis. Try it if you haven’t. Heck, try as many of these events as you can and your staycation will rival your friends’ travels. -Ken Hall

To say that Tennessee Ballet Theater is innovative is a gross understatement. Their productions incorporate dance into a full experience that might include a variety of music and multi-media…and they may very well perform in more parts of a theater than just the stage. So it was with 901 Stories: Down on Beale, which was presented at the New Daisy Theatre. Vignette performances were created in different areas of the New Daisy prior to the main show where the evening included dancers performing to songs from Big Star, Al Green, Sam & Dave, Marc Cohn, Furry Lewis, and more. In addition to dance interpretations of music with Memphis ties, acclaimed vocalist and entertainer Kortland Whalum also performed live. The presentation benefited the Frayser Dance Project, a free dance program for the Frayser community and taught by the Tennessee Dance Theater. 901 Stories: Down on Beale — it was bold, and it was brilliant. tennesseeballettheater.com

Who says decorating has to stop at the walls? One of the easiest ways to add your own personality to a room is by creating a tabletop display filled with your china, pottery, and art. It is an opportunity to share your collections and tell your story, one object at a time. Whether you are a new bride beginning your lifetime of collecting meaningful pieces or have been adding to your collection for decades, 4Memphis retail partners feature ideas for styling your dining table and coffee table to tell your story on a collected table.

From the foyer to the den to the dining room, the best tabletop displays tell a story — pottery collected during travels, classic china handed down through generations combined with contemporary additions, or a sculpture from a favorite local artist. These personal touches create warmth, character, and tell your personal story.
A hand-painted vase might be the star of the show, and when combined with a stack of your favorite books, and a colorful piece of pottery from your best friend, a beautiful display is created. The secret is to mix items that speak to you, then vary heights, textures, and colors to add visual interest.
China cabinets are wonderful, but don't be afraid to bring your favorite pieces out into the spotlight. A collection of cabbage plates arranged on a dining table, layered with unique placemats, are beautiful for summer. A McCarty pottery bowl can be filled with seasonal fruit from the farmer’s market.
Try using items intended for one purpose and use them for something else. For instance, filling a china soup tureen or whimsical water pitcher with fresh-cut flowers for a table centerpiece. Using formal pieces with wooden candlesticks creates unexpected interest. Adding a statement tray with small decorative treasures can transform an entry table into a spot to drop your keys but with personality.
Most importantly, have fun. Decorating tabletops isn't about strict rules — it's about showcasing the things you love. After all, a beautifully arranged tabletop is more than decor; it's a reflection of your home, your collection, and your story.

Grief is difficult for us all and especially for children and teens. The Kemmons Wilson Family Center for Good Grief, located at The Front Porch on Walnut Grove, is an amazing resource of comfort and healing. The Art of Caring annual art auction supports their mission and always brings a terrific variety of art and artists — this year was no exception. Held at the FedEx Event Center at Shelby Farms, the sunset across Hyde Lake framed the event with a well-deserved halo. baptistgriefcenters.org

The Front Porch, located at 4688 Walnut Grove Road, is home to the first Wind Phone in West Tennessee — a quiet, sacred space where anyone can come and speak to a loved one they’ve lost. What is a Wind Phone? It is a simple, unconnected telephone placed in a peaceful spot. You pick it up, dial, and speak from your heart. Your words aren’t carried by wires — they’re carried by the wind.
Grief touches every one of us, and this space is a gift to the community: a place for comfort, reflection, and healing. Whether you need to say, “I miss you,” “I’m sorry,” or “I love you,” the Wind Phone is here for you.

It was another legendary Literatini cocktail competition event on June 6 at Novel in Laurelwood. The evening benefited Literacy Mid-South to raise funds for the programming to serve Memphis learners of all ages. Guests enjoyed scrumptious bites and, of course, craft cocktails. The 2026 competition winners were: Best Martini, Queen D Dines; Mixologist Maestro, Art Bar; Judges' Choice, Char. Best of all, everyone who raised a glass at Literatini also made a difference for the Memphis community. literacymidsouth.org

Novel in Laurelwood recently hosted writer Ellen Morris Prewitt for the launch of her new release, When We Were Murderous Time-Traveling Women. Much like the tale she crafted, it was a delightful afternoon. In a nod to the book’s setting, coffee and beignets were served, and Mardi Gras beads were plentiful. Ellen’s six-year-old grandson Parker served as co-presenter. Unconventional, humorous, and filled with heart and, as Ellen said, “just wild fun, like the book!”

As Memphis begins to swelter on this side of the summer solstice, rather than standing over a hot grill, it’s an ideal time to use your skillet indoors. Below is Buster’s Butcher’s Head Butcher Brad McCarley’s skillet recipe for the perfect steak. Our butchers are also chefs, so we’re happy to give more advice on any of your cooking needs. In addition to all sorts of specialty cuts of 100% Prime steak, we have finishing butters and spices to perfect your skillet skills. For those traveling this summer, please keep in mind we provide vacuum-seal for your meats; don’t forget to grab all your favorite beverages next door. We’ll get everything boxed up and ready for you! - Josh Hammond

Remove steak from the refrigerator 20-30 minutes prior and salt steak generously, along with some black pepper or your favorite seasoning. Preheat oven to 450°F and place your cast iron skillet (or any heavy-bottomed skillet – non-stick will not work) on stove with high heat. A good test method is to put a few drops of water in the pan – if they vaporize immediately, the pan is ready. Pour a tablespoon of oil in the pan. Use an oil with a high smoke point –like corn oil, avocado oil, safflower oil, peanut oil, clarified butter, and refined olive oil are good examples. DO NOT use extra virgin

olive oil or butter that is not clarified – they will burn.
Place your room temperature steak in the pan and cook for two minutes. Flip steak and cook for one minute on the other side. Put the entire pan, steak and all, into your preheated oven until the steak is 135°F. Remove from the oven (the pan will be HOT!) and place on a plate or cutting board to rest for five minutes. The temperature will continue to rise to about 140 degrees (medium rare) as it rests, and you can add a finishing butter during this time as well. Cut the steak into slices and lightly salt once more.

Each year, Dishes for Wishes raises money to grant wishes for local children in our community. This year was the 20th anniversary of Dishes for Wishes and the 40th anniversary of Make-A-Wish; it was a truly big celebration at The Kent. To add to the excitement, the event this year reached a new record for its annual fund-a-flight paddle raise. wish.org

The annual Awards Presentation and Dinner of the Society of Entrepreneurs was more than a black-tie dinner and a chance to catch up with friends: it was a true celebration of Memphis and the accomplishments of the men and women who have built businesses here. The night was about inspiring stories of vision, courage, and leadership. This year's honorees included Chip Marston of The Marston Group, Pace Cooper of Cooper Hotel, Kellan Bartosch and Davin Bartosch of Wiseacre Brewing, Barry Yoakum and Todd Walker of archimania. The Walker Ulhorn Jr. Legacy of Leadership Award was presented to Jack Soden, longtime CEO of Graceland. Thank you to these visionaries who have impacted our city. soememphis.com

The Madonna Circle is celebrating 90 years of service in the Mid-South, and to commemorate this milestone a fabulous “Some Enchanted Evening” Anniversary Gala was held at The Peabody Hotel. Over 300 members and guests joined the festivities, including members who have been in the organization for 45-60+ years plus all Past Presidents and past Fundraising Event Chairs. It was an evening to celebrate, but it was also an evening for fundraising with an over-the-top silent auction that included over 100 items, and every item was bid on! The evening's event team included: president Jan Brucker; event chairman Kaitlin Brucker; silent auction co-chairmen Tine Williams and Cathy Gay; along with Melissa Gunter, Cindy Tarsi, Lori Balbierer, Meghan Newman, Patty Neuhoff and Kathy Marotta. Dinner entertainment by local artists included song standards by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Elvis with Southbound taking the stage and filling the dance floor. Bridal showers are a time for special celebration for the bride-to-be, and when a theme is added, it becomes extra-special. At a recent shower honoring Emma Moore McGee, guests were treated to an exquisite Breakfast at Tiffany’s themed event. Hostess Brenda Harris used Emma’s favorite movie to create a fabulous setting, and along with floral and event designer, Jama Thomas, every detail reflected the classic movie from the color scheme to cookies.

“Designing Emma’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s bridal shower was an absolute joy in every detail — from the iconic Tiffany blue accents to elegant pearls. Lush white florals were carefully chosen to create a timeless, sophisticated celebration that reflected her style perfectly. One of my favorite personal touches was including a sweet nod to her beloved cat Audrey, making the day feel even more meaningful and seeing everything come together for such a special occasion that was truly unforgettable. It was an honor to help create a beautiful setting for Emma as she begins this exciting new chapter.” -Jama Thomas

The Memphis Farmers Market is celebrating 20 years in Downtown Memphis. It’s a gathering spot and Saturday morning tradition from 8am to 1pm with local farmers, artisans, food trucks, live music, and community. Support local and eat fresh! memphisfarmersmarket.org

BLACKBERRY & PEACH CRISP
½ cup salted butter, room temperature, divided 6 fresh peaches
2 cups fresh blackberries
½ cup sugar, optional
2 cups old-fashioned oats
¾ cup all-purpose flour
1 cup brown sugar
1½ cups pecans, chopped, optional
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt 4 tablespoons butter in a 9-by-13-inch dish in the oven. Peel and pit the peaches; slice into wedges. Wash blackberries; pat dry. Mix fruits together in the pan with hot butter - this will brown the fruit slightly before baking. Add ½ cup sugar if you want the fruits to be sweeter.
For the topping, mix the oats, flour, brown sugar (and white sugar, if not added to the fruits) plus the remaining 4 tablespoons butter until the mixture is a coarse meal. Add a bit more butter if needed for desired consistency. Mix in pecans for additional crunch, if desired. Spread the topping across the fruit and bake for about 45 minutes, until golden and bubbly. Serve with ice cream.

The region’s children’s hospital, Le Bonheur, plays a vital role in the community. With the kids in mind, Chef Kelly English and Le Bonheur Club once again pulled together the ultimate tasting party, Le Bon Appetit, June 6 at the Kent. With superb craft cocktails, delicious bites from area restaurants, and guest chefs from around the US, you would think the event could not get any better. And you would be wrong because it did. Le Bon Appetit morphed into a great party later in the evening with a phenomenal brass band in the main room and fun mingling in the VIP tent and VIP speakeasy. Cheers to an event that gets better every year and the great cause it supports. lebonheur.org

PREPERATION:
In a large pot, add two cups of water, the Cajun spice, and cubed butter. Then add all the ingredients in the exact order of the list: potatoes, sausage, corn, lobsters, and clams. Bring to a boil on the stovetop, then cover and cook for 15 minutes. Drain the liquid (but keep it) and pour everything directly from the pot onto a table covered with butcher or freezer paper. Discard any clams that didn’t open, and split the lobsters in half. Serve with drawn butter and whisk in some of the seafood liquid to it, if desired.
*This recipe serves four. If entertaining for a larger group, double or triple the recipe, but use separate pots. Each pot should contain this amount of ingredients to cook evenly.
Andrea LeTard is a cookbook author, personal chef, cooking instructor, Food Network winner, and recipe/travel content creator @andreas_cooktales.
A backyard clambake and lobster boil is a quintessential summer treat and something about it is so Americana, which makes it the perfect idea when entertaining for our Nation’s 250th birthday. This particular recipe is all done in one pot, on the stovetop, and is ready in under 20 minutes. All you need is a few ingredients and a table covered in paper and you’re ready to throw the most beautiful celebration!
• 1 tablespoon Cajun spice
• 1/2 stick butter, cubed
• 1 pound baby red potatoes
• 2 pounds andouille sausage
• 4 ears of corn
• 4 (1 lb) or 2 (2 lb) whole lobsters
• 4 pounds of clams

Southern Security Credit Union recently hosted community leaders, partners, and invited guests for a red carpet premiere event celebrating the launch of Season 3 of the PBS series Opportunity Knocks at Malco Collierville Towne Cinema Grill & MXT. Featured in this season is Kristina, a Memphis single mother working to rebuild stability for her family after experiencing deep personal loss. The premiere event included red carpet arrivals, welcome remarks, photo opportunities, and a reception.

Opportunity Knocks is a PBS series that features stories of families across the country living paycheck to paycheck, and this season includes Memphis mom Kristina. Her story highlights her efforts toward career advancement, financial stability, and emotional healing while navigating the realities many working families face every day.
“Kristina’s story reflects the strength and determination we see every day across our communities,” said Dawn Graeter, CEO of Southern Security Credit Union. “We were honored to support this opportunity and help shine a light on a story that many families can relate to.”
Jean Chatzky, Patrice Washington, and Louis Barajas star as Opportunity Coaches guiding families to build better lives. Along the way viewers inspired by the journey learn how they too can overcome financial challenges.
Unlike traditional reality television centered on competition or conflict, Opportunity Knocks focuses on real-life transformation, financial empowerment, and connecting families with meaningful resources and support.
The series was named “Best Feel Good Show” at the American Reality Television Awards, surpassing nationally recognized programs including Shark Tank, The Voice, and American Ninja Warrior. The show has also received more than 33 awards recognizing excellence in television, social impact, and education.
Achieving the American dream is possible as shown through this touching Memphis story. Congratulations Kristina, and thank you for being an inspiration! Season 3 of Opportunity Knocks premiered nationally June 1 on PBS and the WORLD Channel. Episodes are also available through PBS Passport, PBS.org, YouTube @oppknockstv, and OpportunityKnocks.net.

By Natalie Brashear,
Thoseof you with families and children growing up in Memphis might be familiar with My Big Backyard, the 2.5-acre children’s garden within the Memphis Botanic Garden. My Big Backyard, or ‘MBBY’ as it's affectionately referred to by myself and my colleagues, is divided into themed garden “neighborhoods,” each uniquely designed to engage children and families with the natural world. As the Family Garden Curator of Memphis Botanic Garden, I am lucky enough to have this wonderful and whimsical plot of land at my creative disposal.
If you find yourself wondering what exactly a 'Family Garden Curator' does, I have spent the past year planning and implementing two projects in particular that embody the essence of my role. These new additions are exciting developments within the garden, but they also offer a peek into the future of what the entire garden as a whole is hoping to cultivate.
One of our individual garden neighborhoods within MBBY, the Idea Garden, features a rotating exhibition that changes every two years. This year marked a transition, and on May 9, we unveiled our newest exhibition, 96 Acre Wood — a playful nod to the Garden’s acreage and an exploration of civic life through the world of Winnie-the-Pooh and friends.
While the finished installation may appear deceptively simple — sculptures of familiar characters paired with interpretive activities in a garden setting — the concept has been in development for nearly a year. Creating sculptures that capture the familiar look of papier-mâché, while remaining durable enough to withstand weather and active play requires extensive research, experimentation, collaboration, and fabrication.
These artistic and interpretive features are woven throughout our plant displays and the children’s garden as a whole. Often referred to as hardscape, they provide a creative counterpoint to the living landscapes that most people associate with gardens. One of the defining qualities of the Idea Garden, and of each themed neighborhood within My Big Backyard, is the conversation between these interpretive elements and the plants that surround them.
For 96 Acre Wood, I collaborated closely with our horticulture team to select plantings that directly reinforce the theme. ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’ daylily varieties, beds of carrots and radishes, and sweeping grass displays inspired by the oak savannas near A.A. Milne’s Cotswold home all work together to bring 96 Acre Wood to life and spark the imaginations of young visitors.
Inspired by scenes closer to home, our second major project Fun Studio will open in June. It is an allusion to Memphis’s iconic Sun Studio and a reimagining of another beloved play feature, House of Rock, which was removed last year due to structural rot. The project reflects the natural cycle of outdoor entertainment environments: heavy use and exposure to the elements gradually wear features down, creating opportunities for new ideas to emerge. My role is to find ways to elevate and expand these spaces while remaining true to the original curatorial vision and design intent that made them meaningful in the first place. Fun Studio will do just this, as creativity and music are highlighted more than ever in this new playhouse, which will feature outdoor instruments created by the same artisans who designed the original music features.
As we grow and change over the years, adapting to new environments and visitor needs, one truth remains: this is a green space designed for and inspired by the families of Memphis. While My Big Backyard is a little oasis of fun embedded within the everyday, my goal is to continue to refine and develop elements within the garden that reflect the importance of the place in which we are all rooted. For example, our water feature will soon highlight the unique ecological importance of the Memphis Sands aquifer, Fun Studio nods to the rich musical heritage of our city, and the 96 Acre Wood references the importance of urbanism and community.
As a children’s garden, MBBY is a place designed to affect young minds, but I am also firm in the belief that we should never stop learning. I hope that this space inspires adults, as well, to put down their screens and reconnect with the liberating experience of child-like wonder that can be so hard to grasp and maintain in our busy lives.
One such opportunity to unplug and activate your inner child will be coming up in August. To celebrate the opening of our new Fun Studio playhouse, we will be hosting a family-friendly concert event in My Big Backyard on August 8th, from 6-8 pm. The MBBY Jam Session is a concert that features local bands and artists you may already know and love, but performing as you’ve never seen before, with a setlist and ethos curated specifically for kids. We hope to create an environment where both parents and children will be able to experience and love, and maybe even inspire the next generation of Memphis musicians. This foray will ideally set a precedent for My Big Backyard not just to be a space for Memphians to build memories with their families, but also with each other and our wider community as a whole. I hope to see you out there soon!

“Living the Legacy” was the theme of this year’s Founders Day Luncheon, and they celebrated the many women who over the years of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary have contributed to living the legacy of service. Congratulations to Linda Mathis, the 2026 Sallie Award Winner. Lauren Wilson Young, founder of Sweet LaLa’s Bakery, was the keynote speaker. The Women’s Auxiliary of Memphis was founded in November 1986 and since its inception has continued to lead with compassion, grace, and love. All the proceeds from the luncheon support TSA of Memphis' Purdue Center of Hope’s Camp Hope. salvationarmyusa.org

The Tennessee Whisky Trail gets wild each spring at the Memphis Zoo with Roar & Pour, a night of sampling some 30 distilleries from across the state. From brilliant mini cocktails to liquor samples with great food and live music, the event is a favorite for several hundred guests each year. Sampling stations were spread across the grounds, and some animals came out to watch party animals.

Founded in 1931, Carnival Memphis continued its traditions of royalty, pageantry, community service and celebration during the 95th Anniversary Carnival Week. King Met Crump, Queen Eliza Hussey, President Neely Mallory, the Grand Krewes, Royal Court, members, sponsors and volunteers enjoyed the “Party with a Purpose” at evening events and spread the joy of Carnival throughout the Mid-South with over 50 visits to children’s charities, retirement, and nursing homes during the day. The highlight of the week was the announcement of $700,000 with matching funds raised for the 2026 Children’s Charities: TigerLIFE, Memphis Allies, and PURE Academy, along with the new Carnival Cares mini-grant program. carnivalmemphis.org
