Dear Celina ISD Families, It is with great excitement that I welcome you back for another fantastic school year! It’s hard to believe that in a few short weeks we will once again be opening our doors for the 20182019 academic year. We are extremely excited to get this year started with the knowledge that our students will be under the care of the very best educators in the State of Texas! The first day of school is an exciting day for all of us. My team has spent the summer months preparing our campuses and facilities for the arrival of our students. Our faculty members have focused on their learning by spending countless hours attending workshops to bring the best strategies to their classrooms. From workshops to running bus routes, we are looking forward to all of the great things that will be happening in our district this upcoming year. As you arrive back on our campuses this August, you will notice new faces that joined our district over the past few months. Our new staff members are excited to bring their expertise in their fields of study to our students and we are blessed to have an amazing group of faculty members that bring a high level of commitment and engagement to give their students the tools they need to be successful. I have also had the pleasure to speak with many new families that have moved into our district over the summer. The word “growth,” will be used over and over during the next few years. One only has to take a drive around the district to see the numerous new housing developments that are underway, which makes it very clear to what the future holds for our city and schools. Celina ISD is very committed to ensuring the safety of our students, faculty, and staff members. Security on our campuses is not taken lightly and safety procedures will be followed for all individuals visiting any of our CISD facilities. A security survey was available to our families and community over the summer break. The results of the survey will be shared with our board members after the start of the school year and will determine what direction the district will move in order to provide additional security support for our campuses. Our theme for the year is “Unified.” We are all unique due to the different backgrounds and experiences that we bring to the table, but no matter our background, ethnicity or religion, we can find common ground to stand unified in accomplishing our goals. Together, as we embark on this new year, may it be filled with discovery, challenges and excitement as we continue to pave the path for our students to achieve their dreams. I look forward to welcoming our new and current students back to school on Wednesday, August 16th, when our CISD family will be reunited once again as we prepare for another epic year!

Tickets go on sale Aug. 1 for the inaugural Celina Oktoberfest celebration, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018, in the city’s historic downtown square at West Walnut and North Ohio Streets in Celina. This family friendly event will be presented rain or shine. General admission tickets are $5. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free, as will any attendee who wears a traditional German lederhosen or dirndl costume to the festival. Tickets will be available for advanced purchase at www.celinaoktoberfest. com, and will also be sold at the gate on the day of the event. A limited number of specially priced tickets will also be on sale at www.Groupon.com. Free parking and shuttles will be at Celina Elementary School, 550 S. Utah Drive, and at Brookshire’s Food & Pharmacy Celina, 675 Sunset Blvd. Paid parking ($20) will be adjacent to the square at West Pecan Street and North Louisiana Drive. Alcoholic-drink tickets ($1 each) will be available the ticket booth during the festival (four tickets for a 12-ounce beer; six tickets for 16 ounces). Commemorative, half-liter beer steins ($10) can be purchased and used at Celina Oktoberfest or kept as a souvenir. Sponsored by Landmark Bank, Celina Oktoberfest will feature live music from festive bands, a tempting assortment of traditional German foods and a beer garden boasting a bountiful selection of bubbling brews. In a nod to Celina’s deeply rooted tradition of championship-winning football, the day’s biggest college-gridiron matchups will be presented at Celina Oktoberfest on a massive LED screen. Pro-football legends and members of the North Texas chapter of the NFL Alumni Association are also scheduled to appear, and radio personalities Mike and Cash Sirois of 1310 AM/96.7 FM The Ticket will broadcast live from noon to 2 p.m. “This will be an Oktoberfest celebration unlike any other in Texas,” said Melissa Cromwell, president of the Greater Celina Chamber of Commerce which produces the event. Celina Oktoberfest will kick off with a cornhole tournament presented by the Celina Police Association, followed by the ceremonial tapping of the keg by Celina Mayor Sean Terry and a traditional toast. Exciting events will follow throughout the day and evening, including a Dachshund Derby dog race, Chicken Dance circles and costume contests for children and adults. Youngsters can enjoy bounce houses, an obstacle course, a rock-climbing wall and a petting zoo in the free Kids’ Zone, sponsored by Martin Marietta, as well as cookie- and pumpkin-decorating activities. Celina Oktoberfest will feature a plethora of entertaining performances, beginning with traveling tuba quartet Imperial Brass; followed by American-polka purists The Royal Klobasneks; Bavarian-inspired dance troupe Texanischer Schuhplattler Verein; Alps music aficionados by Auf Gehts Musik; and a high-energy set by headliners The Dogensteins, noted for transforming mainstream-music hits into foot-stomping polka tunes. Authentic German delicacies and other culinary treats will be served up at Celina Oktoberfest by more than a dozen food-and-beverage purveyors including Bayer’s Kolonialwaren from Muenster, Texas. Among the numerous merchandise vendors will be a popup shop by The Kuckucks Nest, a Bavarian boutique and gift emporium from Fredericksburg, Texas. “There will truly be something for everyone at Celina Oktoberfest. The square is going to be packed with entertainment and activities,” Cromwell said. “It will be an exciting, fun-filled start for this new, annual Celina tradition.” For additional information and updates about Celina Oktoberfest, visit www.celinaoktoberfest.com. Celina On August 1st, the Celina Main Street Program is launching a new online tool to showcase the Historic Downtown Square: Celina360. Just as it sounds, Celina360 is a 360° viewing platform to tour Downtown Celina virtually! Within the site, retail view 360° tours lets customers know where to go and what to expect visually before arriving downtown by traveling down sidewalks and “entering” into businesses and city facilities as if physically walking the Square. Celina360 also allows organizations to embed content to display menus, promotions, upcoming events, and more! As Celina grows, Celina360 will draw future residents and allow those new to the area to explore downtown amenities. The tour can be accessed from any device through the Celina Main Street Website: Celina-Tx.Gov/MainStreet. According to a study by Stone Temple, consumer trends show that in 2017, 63% of online traffic comes from mobile phones versus 37% from a desktop. As this trend continues, the Celina Main Street Advisory Board wanted those interested from new residents to potential businesses to explore downtown the most convenient way possible: on the phone. Dorothy Allen, a Celina resident, and her company Allan Retail Group was instrumental in envisioning and implementing this project. When asked about Celina360, Dorothy says, “Celina has an incredible opportunity to draw residents form far and wide looking for a small town culture. As a “transplant” myself, I didn’t know the city center existed for at least three months, I was too busy setting up my home and enrolling my kids in school. Celina360.com is an interactive, digital platform for residents and future neighbors to explore on any device to find city information, downtown businesses and areas of local interest. Eventually it will include new communities and businesses as they arrive. Bookmark the site and follow the changes as Celina grows.” This launch is just the beginning for the site and its potential. As Celina and its offerings grow, so will Celina360.

Where it “Alla” Began By: Lisa Ferguson

School bells will ring once again this month at Celina High School, which was constructed more than a decade ago on the site of the former Alla School building. A historical marker at the campus details the history of that school, which opened in 1896. The Alla School was entirely financed by Dr. Moses Hubbard who, with his wife Mary Jane Hubbard and 6-year-old daughter Alla, moved from Missouri to the Celina area in 1866. According to the book Reminiscences of Celina, available at the Celina Museum, the family settled on 240 acres of land a few miles east of the city. A farmer and one of the area’s largest landowners, he also practiced medicine. “In the beginning, his patients were few due to the amount of settlers but as the area grew, so did the doctor’s practice and he became very successful and wealthy.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Hubbard had grown “quite concerned about the school facilities which were available for his only daughter,” as the Crossroads School, located east of Celina, offered only a three-month school year. The Hubbards supplemented Alla’s education at home before sending her as a teen to the Pritchett Institute, a private college in Glasgow, Missouri, from which she graduated in 1880 with a literature degree. She went on to become a writer.

After returning to Texas, Alla Hubbard wed Dr. B.F. Spencer of Weston in 1884. Sadly, she died five years later after succumbing to a fatal throat ailment. She was buried at Cottage Hill Cemetery beneath an ornate, Italian-made marble statue which, decades later following an act of vandalism, was restored with financial assistance from the Celina Area Heritage Association and the Alla Hubbard Trust. (It is now housed inside a large glass display case in Celina High School’s library.) In 1895, Dr. and Mrs. Hubbard founded the Alla School in their daughter’s memory and endowed it with 1,000 acres of land. The school was formed via the consolidation of the nearby Emerson and McWhirter school districts. According to the historical marker, it had “nine grades, no scholastic age limit, no tuition and an eight-month school term. The Hubbards, aware of the benefits of a solid educational background, instituted these uncommon features at a time when there was little support for free public schools.” 16

On the website collincountyhistory.com, the original school building is described in a reprint of a 1946 McKinney Daily Courier Gazette newspaper article as having been “a two-story, wooden building constructed by Ben and Willie O’Brien. In the first story were two large classrooms and a hall. The upper story housed the Masonic lodge for several years.” The original Alla School building reportedly cost $4,500 to construct. In its first year, it boasted an enrollment of 108 students. A home for its small handful of teachers was constructed near the campus in 1898, prior to Dr. Hubbard’s 1906 death. Mary Jane Hubbard followed in 1914. Like their beloved daughter, both were laid to rest at Cottage Hill Cemetery. For many years local students paid homage to the couple during an annual reunion staged at the school around Dr. Hubbard’s July 31 birthday. (Photo courtesy of Jane Willard) followed six years later by a new, two-story school brick building to accommodate additional grade levels. In 1941 a gymnasium was added – the floors of which were sanded annually following basketball season, according to a Celina Record newspaper article, and the space “doubled as a roller rink till it was time for school to start again. The basketball coach, who was also the superintendent, and boys from the basketball team re-varnished and re-striped the gym floor. … The whole gym floor had to periodically be replaced.” The Alla School and Celina ISD consolidated in 1957. For many years, the former Alla building served as the Celina Junior High School campus for students in grades 5 through 8. After standing empty for a lengthy period, it was destroyed in the late 1970s or early ‘80s by a tornado. However, the school’s original bell is now part of the Celina High School - Alla Hubbard Memorial Campus monument that faces North Preston Road. Celina ISD, meanwhile, continues to receive funds annually from the Alla Hubbard Trust that was formed in the late 1800s by Dr. and Mrs. Hubbard. Some Alla School alums continue to meet each year at a reunion held at Celina High School. Jim Hollandsworth and his wife, Helen Perry-Hollandsworth, met in fifth grade and married a month after they graduated from the Alla School in 1956. A former catcher on the Alla Black Cats baseball team, in 2016 Mr. Hollandsworth recalled of his alma mater, “It was a small school, and you knew everybody.”

Emergency Funds

Why Do I Need One? How Much Do I Need? How Do I Get Started? Where Do I Keep It?

An emergency fund is money that you set aside in a separate savings account, and is only used to pay for large unexpected expenses such as a major auto repair, or a financial crisis, such as job loss or large medical bills. Why Do I Need An Emergency Fund? An emergency fund gives you a financial risk cushion, a buffer that can help keep you afloat in a time of need without having to rely on credit cards or take out high-interest loans. This is especially important if you already have credit card debt. How Much Should I Save In An Emergency Fund? A good rule of thumb is to have enough saved up in your emergency fund to cover at least three to six months’ worth of living expenses. If you lose your job, for instance, you could use the money to pay for necessities while you find a new one, or the funds could supplement your unemployment benefits.

How Do I Get Started? Start small, but start now. Set your initial goal to having $1,000 saved, this can at least help to pay for minor unexpected expenses like getting new tires or fixing you’re A/C. Decide how much you can save each month, and build your fund over time. If there’s no money left after your expenses, cut out some expenses. Some ways to save include carpooling, cooking more meals at home, and avoiding small daily purchases such as takeout coffee. If you have the time and willpower, get a second job or sell unused items from home to accumulate more money for your fund. Where do I put my emergency fund? Because an emergency can strike at any time, having quick access to your money is crucial, however the account should be separate from your daily bank account, so you’re not tempted to dip into it.

Stage 1 Water Watch for Celina The lack of meaningful rainfall and continued high temperatures are leading to high water use among City of Celina customers. Upper Trinity, whom we purchase our drinking water from, has determined that water demand is approaching a level that will cause a reduced delivery capacity for all or part of its transmission system. Therefore, Upper Trinity is initiating its Stage 1 - Water Watch of its Drought Contingency Plan. City of Celina has been requested to implement their respective drought contingency plan, including the following mandatory time-of-day and maximum two-times-per-week landscape watering schedule. • Limit outdoor watering with automatic systems or hose-end sprinklers to no more than two times per week. • Prohibit outdoor watering with automatic irrigation systems or hose-end sprinklers from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. • Restrict washing of any motor vehicle to the use of a hand-held bucket or a hand-held hose equipped with a positive shut-off nozzle for quick rinses. Vehicle washing may be done at any time on the immediate premises of a commercial car wash facility or commercial service station. Companies with an automated on-site vehicle washing facility may wash its vehicles at any time. City of Celina will also implement the following: • Increase public education efforts on ways to reduce water use. • Encourage reduction in frequency of draining and refilling swimming pools. • Discourage water waste associated with recreational (water used for leisure, games and entertainment purposes) use from faucets, hoses, or hydrants. • Intensify efforts on leak detection and repair. • Be alert to internal non-essential water use (e.g., vehicle washing, operation of ornamental fountains, etc.) • Irrigation System Check-Up Request Form The goal for water use reduction under Stage 1 is 5% of total daily water use under normal conditions. Bobcat Alley Dedicated to Celina Athletics By: Colby Caldwell This weeks athlete spotlight is going to shine a light on a newcomer to the Celina High School volleyball team. Megan Hodges is a very dedicated freshman volleyball player that has played for Celina Junior High and has stood out among other stars. Hodges is also an integral part of the Madfrog 15 Green club volleyball team. Since Hodges plays both club volleyball and volleyball for the Bobcats, she has to be able to handle juggling the demands of her two teams to make sure she gives 100% to both. She says, “Luckily club and school volleyball season dontt conflict.” Being on both teams increases the opportunity to attract college coaches. Hodges also says, “It’s is very time consuming, you have to be 100% committed to the sport.” This level of dedication shows how determined she is to being the best she can be. As just an incoming freshman, Hodges is already attracting some college attention. Coming on the the high school volleyball team shouldn’t be hard for the young freshman considering she has encouragement from her two older sisters who have been on the varsity team in previous years. Her older sister Hannah is an incoming senior and has been on the varsity team for three years. Celina volleyball had some changes in the coaching staff for this upcoming year. New head coach and girls athletic coordinator Coach Ginger Murray is coming in from the junior high and is ready to do an amazing job for the girls athletics. Hodges is excited for the upcoming season and said, “Coach Murray was my coach in 7th grade and we had a great relationship. All coaches bring something different to the table so I’m excited to see what happens.” Hopefully we will see some great things on the court this year. I asked Hodges what four words she would use to describe herself as a player and a teammate and she responded with, “Competitive, resilient, motivator and positive.” Hodges is someone who will bring the motivation in the locker room and excitement on the court. Here at OurCelina, we are ready to see what impact she has on the upcoming four years that she will be on the court for Celina.

Soul Matters: Freedom Markers

I am thankful for the recent work I have been enjoying with a consistent group of North Texas men who have be sincere, secure, and stable in their commitment to their marriages and families regarding current and past events. I enjoy the dialogue they are having due to their common connections. Suggesting topics of conversation have gone in directions I thought and sometimes in places reaching depths and more meaning for each of them because they are working at being intentional with their time, themselves, and each other. I know recently the effect is having an impact on their external world outside of the group. They are reporting back small changes or interventions, ways of thinking, or handling situations are making a difference. The difference creates good dialogue with those around them, and increases positive experiences with their immediate relationships. Sure, some would say a group focus ends up as a gossip fest, or a time to rag and blame, but in this space there are efforts to direct our time to wise pursuits. I witness wisdom coming out because facilitation makes sure hearts and thoughts pursue purity and earnest desires for good outcomes with various concerns. Having a place to express truths and seek wisdom from one another is such a fountain of healing. It is such a pleasure to be creative in this Pecan Street space with men and hear open responses about new adventure, or teasing as they find laughter and joy in our talks.

One freedom marker pointing to healthy dialogue and healing is the amount of belly laughs one can have at oneself or situation. Realizing no need to hide, one doesn’t have to control responses about something thought. The release comes in various waves of raucous emotion broadening our sense of safety and well-being. Sometimes we are laughing our way to peace. We create space for connection. My heart is men in the area would know the same freedom and space to hold their heads high knowing there are others willing to look them in the eye and share the load. Silent affirmation and eye contact can mean so much encouragement. It screams “You’ve got this man!!! Keep going!!! Don’t stop because you think it might not work!!! Keep going!!! Don’t stop believing!!!” There might be a few songs that have similar phrasing, but the Biblical narrative is even better: Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Ingredients

Chicken Cordon Bleu

4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 6 slices Swiss cheese 4 slices cooked ham 1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Coat a 7x11 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Pound chicken breasts to 1/4 inch thickness. Sprinkle each piece of chicken on both sides with salt and pepper. Place 1 cheese slice and 1 ham slice on top of each breast. Roll up each breast, and secure with a toothpick. Place in baking dish, and sprinkle chicken evenly with bread crumbs. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until chicken is no longer pink. Remove from oven, and place 1/2 cheese slice on top of each breast. Return to oven for 3 to 5 minutes, or until cheese has melted. Remove toothpicks, and serve immediately.
