Texas has explicit and good Anti-Bullying laws and policies. I am comfortable with the policy GISD has now.

Gunter has always been known for a low teacher to student ratio. We should continue those ideals.

My name is Gary Z Harris. I am a current member of the Gunter ISD Board of Trustees. I am running for re-election. School board members need to be dedicated and committed. Effective board members bring a lot to the table and maintain an unwavering interest to achieve the goals of the school district. Second, I come from a background of education. Both of my parents were educators and my mother was an administrator for a large North Texas district. I have been I would say the biggest challenges that doesn't include just our district but districts all over. It is balancing around it all my life. Another challenge for our district and all others is teacher shortages. With the trend continuing into this school year, schools are looking for ways to attract and retain quality teachers. Buidling a career ladder for teachers to pursue, providing opportunities for collaboration and facilitating development, and creating a supportive environment that encourages creativity can be key in creating incentives for teachers to stay in the profession.

I am running for reelection because it my hearts desire to serve GISD

I am a huge proponent of CTE programs. I understand that college is not an option for every graduate of Gunter ISD therefore I feel strongly about providing a path to success through programs that provide real-life skills for young adults. In addition, I would like Gunter ISD to lead in developing graduates with an education in life skills such as budgeting, taxes, and investing.

I grew up in Plano, Texas with my parents and an older brother and sister. Today, I am married to Debra and live with my two daughters, Samantha, a sophomore at Gunter High School, and Faith, who is in college and beginning her career. My family and I moved to Gunter in July of 2021 after living in Celina for roughly 12 years. As a young adult, I was heavily involved in Computer Aided Drafting as well as graphic design. In my late 20s and early 30s, I started a family and decided that I wanted to do something more I believe that our students will learn the most community service oriented so I trained to became a fireman and worked for Dallas Fire-Rescue as well as when they are in an environment where they feel the McKinney Fire Department as a fireman/paramedic. Number one differentiator would be experience. I have served 3 years on the board already and we have a strategic goal in place and we are on that path already so there is no training involved with myself.

Right now there are opportunities such as the growth we are seeing come our way in Gunter. The opportunities include making sure we are building newer state of the art buildings for our children to learn in and continuing to hire very good teachers like we have now to continue the positive education our kids are receiving.

the excellent standards we have in place.

Lastly, I have been apart of a state recognized school board that has accomplished a lot in the last three years. I have helped the navigation of the school district through Covid. I have helped the school district pass a much needed school bond to build a new elementary school and purchase of land for a new high school. The most important job a school board will ever have is hiring a new superintendent, or CEO of the district. We did that as well in my three years serving on the board.

keep developing the art of the listening ear and listening to the people and focus of the mission of the GISD to provide a quality education for the students

I believe in a zero tolerance when it comes to bullying and have work shops with teachers parents and student to inform and educate everyone with skills to address this topic in our current environment we live in

My top 3 priorities, in no particular order, are the following:

As mentioned in other questions, Gunter ISD has some challenges with staff morale and the current culture of intimidation that has been created. We have an opportunity here to ensure open communication between administration, educators, parents, and In my 22 years in education, I have learned that students, especially when voicing concerns. smaller class sizes are essential for both No one should feel intimidated when voicing students and teachers. Our district is being used as a stepping stone where they come for a few years and then move on. We need to keep them here! What differentiates me is my experience in the educational field. I have experience as a teacher, an administrator, and as a parent. I have worked in diverse districts with many different populations of students, teachers, administrators, parents, and staff. This experience allows me to look at issues from multiple perspectives and consider different points of view. If there is one thing I have learned in my 22 years in education, it is that there are at least two (most of the time more) sides to the story. This has taught me to listen first, consider and then offer solutions after hearing all the possibilities.

Yes. Poor decision making by, and concerning, upper administration. I have not been happy with many decisions and actions by the Board and upper administration over the last few years. For example, I question many personnel-related decisions and actions that have been made and wonder how a deliberative body could make such decisions and/or support such actions. 1. GISD should form a standing committee composed of at least one teacher and one administrator from each campus that will review and decide all bullying allegations. As the bullying standard is somewhat subjective, I believe a set committee that reviews all allegations would help provide all parties with a better standard of response and predictability than reviews by inconsistent and differing groups of decision makers.
