TOP 25

t the risk of tooting our own horn, we know that both newer racers and seasoned veterans really like being named among the 48° North Top 25 race boats! Though the list changes each year, it’s not a secret how we select the boats for our annual Top 25. The qualifying races for our Top 25 offer a good representation of keelboat racing in the Pacific Northwest, and include a mix of distance and aroundthe-buoy races, single-race events, and multi-race regattas. Our scoring system is on a percentage basis, depending on the size of the class: 0% (did not finish) to 100% (first in class), where the event score = (Finishers – Place) / (Finishers – 1). Overall scores are an average of a boat’s best five finishes—so you’ve got more chances if you race more than five qualifying events. There is no minimum number of races required to qualify. Multirace events (like the Southern Sound Series, Center Sound Series, and Tri-Island Series) are scored as single events based on the series results. Ties in the scoring system go to the boat with the larger average fleet size. Keep an eye out for the February issue of 48° North when the Top 25 for 2025 will be revealed. Can anyone keep 2024’s dominant #1 Boat, J/105 Moose Unknown from the top spot? The 2025 Top 25 may be in the books, but 2026 is all to play for. Challenge the perennial Top 25ers, and have a lot of fun while you’re at it! Put these events on your calendar, get out there, sail your best, and you’ve got a great shot. 13
