Welcome to Midway! EDDIE CORNBLUM, HEAD COACH
Welcome to today’s game and thank you for
supporting Midway baseball!
Coach Cornblum is in his seventh year as Head Coach at Midway High School. Coach Cornblum holds a Bachelor’s degree in recreation with a minor in Business Management from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. His early coaching experience included serving as Assistant Coach under Craig McMurtry at Temple College (1997-1999), Assistant Coach under Larry Haynes at Temple HS (2000-2003), and Assistant Coach under David Tidwell at Belton HS (2003-2008). In 2008, Coach Cornblum became Head Baseball Coach at Belton HS where he led their program until his departure for Midway High School in 2016. Cornblum served as the Regional Director for the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (THSBCA) for 3 years (2012-2015), as well as the Head Baseball Coach for Team Texas 20112013. In 2016, Coach Cornblum was named to the THSBCA All Star Committee and served as the Head Coach for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ Victory Bowl. Since coming to Midway, Coach Cornblum’s teams have won 3 district Chamionships, sent dozens of players to college and has seen his teams average 23 wins a year. Success should never be once in a while, it should be sustained. There is so much Cornblum loves about coaching. His favorites include developing players, the challenge of excellence, practice,
games, edging the baseball field, the relationships with his players, the friendships he shares with his fellow coaches, and last but not least....WINNING! Coach Cornblum and his wife, Deena, have two children - daughter Terran, 27, who resides in Austin, and Couper who is a junior at Purdue and plays baseball for the Boilermakers. In his spare time, Cornblum likes to spend time with his wife, workout, watch movies, and work on the baseball field. The Cornblums are very involved with special needs groups. Coach Cornblum is the founder of “Homerun for Health”, a fundraiser held in collaboration with Scott & White Children’s Hospital. His advice to players today is “There might be players more talented than you, but there is no reason you can’t be a great teammate, out work your opponent, and so whatever you can to help your team be successful.”

Ben Basden Assistant Coach, Varsity Coach Basden is currently in his 18th year of coaching—h is seventh at Midway High School. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Baylor University. His coaching experience includes time spent as a baseball coach at Vanguard College Preparatory School and Troy High School. His favorite thing about coaching baseball is the opportunity to positively impact young men, while watching them compete and respond to the challenges in the game of baseball. In addition to coaching, he is also the Worship Leader at Crossroads Fellowship Church. In his spare time, he enjoys playing music, reading and spending time with his wife, Michelle and his children, Bryce (11), Brinkley (9), and Brewer (6). His favorite q uote is from Jo hn Wooden: “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” Coach Basden’s best advice to his players is to make the most of every moment and every relationship.
Brett Sommer Assistant Coach, Varsity Coach Sommer is a graduate of Texas A&M University. This is his 11th year Brett Somers Assistant Coach, Varsity of coaching and he’s excited about joining the Midway Baseball Staff. He has spent most of his career in the Houston area, with stops at HuffmanHargrave, North Shore, New Caney, and Dayton High Schools.
He and his wife, Ju lie are returning to Central Texas to be closer to family. Coach Sommer is a 2005 graduate of Troy High School, where he was a 3-year letterman for the Trojan Football, Basketball, and Baseball teams. Midway Athletics has always had a rich tradition of excellence in athletics and he is excited to be a part of it. Coach Sommer also serves as the Varsity O ffensive Line Coach for the Panther football program. “I want to inspire o ng men to thin deeper abo t their goals, find a o ntabilit or those goals, and realize it’s not about reaching those that are tangible, but more so the feeling/ emotion they will feel when reaching each milestone. Those are the ultimate goals we chase.”
Patrick Mathis Assistant Coach, Varsity Coach Mathis is a graduate of The University of Texas and was a member of the 2015 Big X II Championship baseball team. After his junior year he was drafted in the 22nd round to the Houston Astros in 2017. He played two minor league seasons with the Astros and one season of Independent ball with the Windy City Thunderbolts in 2019. O utside of baseball he likes spending time o tdoors h nting and fishing. e also lo es spending time with his amil wi e Je rica and dog Deuce. His favorite q uote is from Derek Je ter: “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do”. His best advice he has to players is play the game hard and have fun and the pressure will turn to pleasure.

N ick W rig ht Assistant Coach, Varsity Coach Wright is a graduate of Baylor University and was a member of 2012 Big X II Championship baseball team. Prior to Baylor, he pitched for two seasons at Angelina College in Lufkin, tying the school record for career appearances. Coach Wright is a graduate of Belton High School, where he played three seasons of varsity baseball. Prior to Midway, Coach Wright coached for four years at Bruceville-E ddy High School, where he served as the head baseball coach for three of those years. In his spare time, he enjoys working out, traveling, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and taking naps. His best advice for players is, “As the years pass, your teammates will remember you a lot more for how you treated them than or how o per ormed on the field.

He attended college at Seward County Community College, Iowa State University, and grad ate s hool at tephen . stin. e is ertified thro gh the ational Athletic Trainers’ Association and is a Licensed Athletic Trainer. had and his wi e hana are the pro d parents o atalie, ar ala and amesie. n his spare time, he li es to fish, h nt and ride o r wheelers. is advice for athletes is to trust the process of getting stronger and not take any shortcuts in achieving strength (i.e., eating healthy, getting plenty of sleep and staying properly hydrated).

O riginally from Denton, Chen is in her thirteenth year at Midway. Prior to Midway, she worked as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Arkansas. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Baylor University, and a Master’s degree in K inesiology from the University of Arkansas. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, working out and hanging out with friends. Her advice for athletes is to take care of their bodies by always stretching, warming up properly, and staying hydrated.
