WEEKEND GETAWAYS Selous Mbega Camp situated in its own forest reserve, built in 2000, is the original camp set up along the mighty Rufiji River near the Mtemere Gate, the Eastern gate to the Selous Game Reserve. It is our head quarters for operations in the Selous, and offers Boat Safaris on the Rufiji River, Walking Safaris and Game Drives as well as cultural village trips to the Mloka village. Fishing excursions on the Rufiji River can also be arranged. SELOUS MBEGA CAMP (the Original or Main Camp) along the Rufiji River near to the Mtemere Gate, Eastern entrance of the SELOUS GAME RESERVE is set up with twelve safari tents as well as a stone house with two rooms, that are all set up along the mighty Rufiji River. Just 500 metres away from the border of the Selous Game Reserve, in its own private 60 ha riverine forest reserve. A green ceiling of tree branches and leaves, providing almost always shade throughout the day, covers the camp area. These trees are sometimes visited by a variety of monkeys, including the Angolan Black & White Colobus monkey, known in Kiswahili as Mbega mweupe, or Mbega, to which the camp owes its name. The Restaurant and Bar are situated under a palm leave thatched roof around a Mahogany tree, facing the Rufiji River. The kitchen provides a variety of different cuisines or so called “Bush Recipes”. The accommodation at Selous Mbega Camp is in large safari tents, built on wooden platforms, mosquito & insect proof, with en- suite bathrooms, and a verandah. ZANZIBAR EVENTS 7th - 15th July 2018: Founded 21 years ago in Zanzibar, ZIFF is known as the Festival of the Dhow Countries and has always been an event that celebrates and promotes the culture of the East African region. As one of the only longrunning and community based festivals in East Africa, ZIFF plays a critical role in the promotion and development of local culture, as well as of the local film and content indsutry..Through the power of film, as well as music and the arts, ZIFF is committed to social justice and development, tolerance and inclusion, and the on-going promotion of African film and filmmakers. To that end, ZIFF embarks on a number of initiatives that extend beyond the borders of Stone Town, or even the island of Zanzibar, as well as beyond the nine days of the official festival.. http://www.ziff.or.tz Late July: A four-day-long celebration, Mwaka Kogwa is best observed at Makunduchi, a village in the south part of Zanzibar. The origins of this holiday are Zoroastrian (a Persian religion older than Islam). It is a celebration of the Shirazi New Year and some of the events include the burning of the hut and mock fights. These fights are between men who defend themselves with banana stems (in place of the sticks that were formerly used), and this fighting, in which everyone gets a chance, is said to let everyone air their grievances and so clear the air as the new year rolls in. As the men fight, the women stroll through the fields singing songs about life and love. They are dressed in their best clothes and taunt the men after the fight is over. The festivities vary from village to village but Makunduchi is where the biggest events take place. All are welcome for the festival because it is a local belief that anyone without a guest for this holiday is unhappy. The holiday is held every year around the third week of July, but check with a local tour operator to get the official dates.
