Kerosene is cripplingly expensive, burning on average 20% of a household’s income each month while contributing to pollution and hazards in the home. DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Dar es Salaam has developed a solar energy initiative for Tanzania whereby children participate in a solar energy workshop and receive a free portable solar study light to use within their household. Each solar desk light provides 4 hours of bright light each night and will last between 7-10 years maintenance free. Endorsed by The Government of Tanzania and launched by The Minister of State for the Environment Dr Tereyza Huvisa, the twoyear initiative aims to educate the young generation about solar energy and to support a household by giving them a free, clean and easy to use solar energy light that is a safe source of light for children to complete homework and for families to have light after dark. DoubleTree by Hilton distributes 200 solar desk lights for free during workshops and has so far conducted workshops in The Coastal Region and will soon distribute in the Southern Zone.
