Over the course of 6 weeks, the producers sat down and developed ‘Binti’ further, adding layers to each character’s story and triumph. The three ladies also began to assemble the best crew they could find – from assistant director to costume designer. They had only three foreigners join the team. Justin Aguirre - a talented cinematographer from Los Angeles, Blessing Hungwe – an experienced assistant director from Zimbabwe, and David Jalenga - the man in charge of perfectly capturing sound on set, drove down all the way from Nairobi, Kenya. The rest of the crew was filled out by professional Tanzanians who worked extremely hard to bring ‘Binti’ to life. The actors were picked via in-person auditions that took place at the Black Unicorn offices in Masaki. Some hopefuls saw ads on social media while others were brought in by the casting agent, Suleiman. There were so many talented actors who auditioned but only four women made the final cut. And even after a few rehearsals with the director, some changes were made and some of the women ended up switching roles. The producers found magic in Bertha Robert, Maggie Munisi, Helen Hartmann and Godliver Gordian. These four ladies played the parts of Tumaini, Angel, Stella and Rose – four Tanzanian women enduring and overcoming hardships in Dar-es-Salaam.
ALL-FEMALE TEAM TAKES TANZANIAN CINEMA TO NEW HEIGHTS In any film industry, in any country, an all-female producing team making a film about contemporary African women would be a big feat. Picture a female director, female writers and female producers working together to make a historic film about the everyday Tanzanian woman. This is the case with the upcoming film, ‘Binti’. ‘Binti’ was just a seed (then known as ‘Her Life’) planted by Maria Shoo back in 2018. In 2019, Shoo’s story about four Tanzanian women dealing with various hardships, was hand-picked by Black Unicorn Studios to be their first feature film. Black Unicorn Studios is a fairly new production company founded by two ambitious Tanzanian sisters – Alinda and Angela Ruhinda. Formed in 2018, Black Unicorn has been steadily making it’s way in the realm of storytelling. Their first project was an original stage play called The Big 3 (which was promoted heavily in Advertising Dar) and was produced in November 2018. The romantic comedy was a big hit and it encouraged the Ruhinda sisters to tell more original stories.
The ‘Binti’ team started shooting at the beginning of July 2019 and the shoot was exactly 21 days long. 6am starts on the first week, 6pm starts in the second and a combination of the two in the final week. 12 hour days, multiple locations all over the city, hot weather, four stories, it was a tumultuous shoot. Post-production was the longest process of all. ‘Binti’s first cut was edited by Seko Shamte and then given a second round by Jeremy Weinstein, a phenomenal editor based out of Los Angeles. Whilst a lot of the music from the film was provided by Tanzanian indie artists, composition was also provided by Dara Taylor in L.A. Sound design was handled by Hisham Bilal in Egypt, while color correction and VFX were handled in Northern and Southern India by various talented men. Post production was completed in October 2020 (after many delays due to covid-19) and soon thereafter, Black Unicorn Studios secured a distribution deal with Okada Media (U.S). ‘Binti’ was selected to screen and premiere at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles in 2021. The official premiere date is March 8 which happens to be International Women’s Day. Black Unicorn Studios and Okada Media will also be hosting private (women only) screenings of the film in Dar-es-Salaam, Nairobi and Kampala on the same day. There are plans for a limited theatrical run in Dar-esSalaam, an announcement is on the horizon.
At the end of 2018, Black Unicorn launched a screenwriting competition called ‘Made In Africa’. Tanzanians above the age of 18 were encouraged to submit original stories about women. Maria Shoo, a student, wrote a story about four women living in Dar-es-Salaam. It was heartbreakingly beautiful and it got her a cash prize and a promise to have the movie produced by the new studio. Once the script was optioned, Black Unicorn Studios reached out to a well-known and respected filmmaker known as Seko Shamte. Shamte is a producer, director and writer in her own right. Her works include; Mkwawa (a powerful documentary about Chief Mkwawa), The Team (TV Series) and her own feature film, ‘Homecoming’. Angela Ruhinda and Seko Shamte had previously worked together on a short film called ‘Midnight’ (which can be found on Youtube) and had developed a rapport. After one e-mail exchange, Shamte agreed to come on board as director and producer for this new film. Page 4
