Baby Play By Rachel Carlin
Language development is the most important building block in your child’s development.
As a new parent, one of the most pressing questions is: “when does my child begin to learn?” Is it when they start school and learn to read and write and count, or is it before that when young children learn to speak? And then, the second follow-up question would be: “what can I do to optimize my child’s learning?”
Babies do not arrive in the world understanding language and language is essentially what separates us from animals. This is the foundation for learning – just as you cannot build a house without a strong foundation, you cannot foster good learning without solid language development.
Recent studies have shown that learning begins in the womb, before your child has entered our world. It is amazing to think that whilst cells are dividing and organs are growing, babies can be stimulated. The focus of this article is not on in utero stimulation, but rather how babies, once born can be stimulated.
Another crucial element to development is touch. This is the sensory experience that allows babies to know that they are loved. It provided comfort and reassurance as being held and touched sends signals to the brain to make connections, thus forming synapses. Babies thrive when being touched in utero, babies are essentially massaged as a result of the mother’s movements. Babies need this continued experience to grow. The fourth trimester is now recognised as the babies first few months out of the womb where they require a lot of touch to feel safe and grow. And it is during this period that we can aid optimum development.
Your baby’s environment is important to build healthy brains and allow for optimum development. The brain development that happens in this early stage will affect how the baby will think and learn, as a child and as an adult, as this is when the brain is busy building its wiring system. Synapses are tiny electrical currents that are created in the brain whenever there is mental activity. The amount of stimulation a baby receives will affect how many synapses are formed. In order for these synapses to be permanent, the stimulation needs to be repetitive and consistent else the synapses will drop away. Your baby’s brain is a little muscle that through correct exercise can become the strongest version possible. It only happens once in our lifetime that our brains are able to experience this intense period of growth and building of the synapses. Like a sponge dropped into a bath, the new brain will suck up all around it. So, as parents and educators we have been gifted this amazing opportunity to stimulate our babies and assist them in building stronger brains.

We all enjoy a good meal that’s cooked and prepared with the utmost freshness and is hygienically handled. We know that food is essential to life but what if it gets contaminated? Well, the answer is astonishing. It can result in illness and in some cases death, which could result in a social and economic consequence for any establishment. The food chain, like any other chain, is only as strong as its weakest link. So how do you prevent cross-contamination in any kitchen? Cross-contamination can be avoided with proper food safety practices. Which begins the moment you purchase the ingredients Page 14

at your favourite grocery store. Separate the raw meats from the rest of the acquired items in your trolley as well as check out. Storing your food properly is of crucial importance in avoiding foodborne illness. Cover any raw meat and place on the bottom shelf of your fridge away from ready to eat foods. If you are not using the majority of the raw meat, freeze and write the date, and apply strict rules on FIFO policy.
The utmost importance is YOUR personal hygiene, remember to wash your hands before and after every task you do.
Ensure you have separate chopping boards, utensils and plates for raw meats, ready to eat foods, pastry and veg. Thoroughly clean and sanitize after every use, if they’re damaged, replace them immediately. Clean as you go. After every task in the kitchen, clean and sanitize your stations.

To the establishments, I’d recommend training your employees so they are aware of the consequences it can impact on both you as an employer and them as staff. The most important goal of food safety is to protect the consumers, “US.”
