Top Tips for Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is not just the tallest mountain in Africa; it is the only standalone summit among the seven summits globally. Mount Kilimanjaro is also our pride, a symbol of freedom and heritage. Whether you are a professional mountain climber, or a lover of nature, climbing this giant is a great way to enjoy nature’s best. Here are the top tips to make the most out of your experience. 1. Timing is everything Mount Kilimanjaro, like most African territories, lies within the equator; hence don’t experience the extreme summer and winter conditions. This implies that you can climb the mountain at any time of the year. However, the best time to climb the mountain is during the dry season, January-March and June-October. The rainy season from April to July is ideal for experienced climbers, but the dry season is the best time for amateurs. During the rainy season, the wet conditions can make the terrain a challenge for many climbers. Further, poor visibility can slow down the trek, implying a 7-day climb can take up to 10 days. Local tour guides recommend January to March as the best time to climb since the weather is colder and dryer. With the cold weather, chances of encountering snow at the peak are higher. Further, since the season coincides with the winter season in America and Europe, traffic along the mountain tends to be minimal. If you are an experienced climber and prefer the rainy season (July-October), you will get the best African experience. The wildebeest migration, which is one of the natural wonders of the world, occurs during this season. You will get a glimpse of the migration while enjoying thousands of wild animals who don’t participate in the migration. Therefore, in terms of timing, pick the dry season if you are an amateur in mountain climbing, but exploring the wet season might give you the best experience if you are an expert. 2. Pick the best route There are seven popular routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro; Marangu, Lemosho, Rongai, Umbwe, Shira, Northern circuit, and Machame. Choosing the best route might be difficult, but a rule of thumb is to pick one with low traffic, excellent scenery, high success rate, and achievable climbing. Further, your ability to adapt to the difference in the altitude matters since most climbers who fail to reach the summit tends to be inhibited by the altitude. The most popular routes are Machame, Marangu, and Lemosho. In terms of scenery, these routes offer the best scenery. You will view the rainforest, Columbus monkeys, zebra rock, Necked ravens, and lava tower along these routes. Further, Machame, Marangu, and Lemosho are ranked as challenging routes, implying your stamina, energy, and persistence will get tested during the trek. In terms of traffic, these routes have the lowest traffic since most amateurs avoid them, giving you the best climbing experience. If you use any of these routes, you will take six days to reach the peak, with some climbers taking up to 7 days. Other routes like the Northern circuit offer the best scenery, lowest traffic, and fantastic experience. However, this is known as the most challenging route, and takes an average of 9 days, making it ideal for experienced mountain climbers.

4. Ensure you are well-hydrated Drinking water is the best way to manage symptoms associated with high altitudes like fatigue, headaches, and general body aches. Most tour guides provide boiled water for the climbers, but you have to carry your water. You must take at least 3 liters of water during the day, 500 ml before taking the hike, 2 liters during the hike, and at least 500 ml after the hike. While an ordinary water bottle can be ideal, experts recommend carrying a hydration bladder since it is easy to use. Also, as you approach the summit, the extremely low temperatures can make the water in a water bottle to freeze, so a hydration bladder is a better option. If you cannot afford a hydration bladder, carry an insulated water bottle. If you can, pack electrolyte packets to add flavor to your water since drinking 3 to 4 liters of water in a day can be a daunting task. 5. Have the right gear Sleeping bags, sunglasses, waterproof boots are some of the essentials required for a successful climb. Some of the items that you must include in your packing list include: • Base layer (top and bottom) • Insulated pants (2 pairs) • Hiking shirts (long sleeve) • Hiking trousers (2 pairs) • Winter jacket (insulated) • Fleece jacket • Herd shell jacket • Duffle bag (waterproof) • Day bag • Trekking poles • Sunglasses • Headlamp • Sunscreen Ensure that you pack enough for your camp duration, especially personal undergarments. Also, carry enough sunscreen and sun hats to protect your skin, especially if you choose to climb during the warm season. Your boots should be ideal to withstand the rough mountain terrain since blisters are the one thing you must avoid during your trek. Remember, getting adequate sleep and rest during the hike increases your success rate. Sleeping on the first few nights might prove to be a challenge as your body gets used to the change in altitude and environment, but you will get accustomed to it in time. Also, ensure that you don’t skip any meal, even if you don’t feel like eating. Carry enough snacks and appetizers since you need the energy to complete the climb. Have fun, climb with good company, and make your trip memorable with these tips.
Rongai route and Marangu route are fairly easy to climb, offer good scenery, and take an average of 6 days to reach the peak. For amateurs, these tend to be the most popular routes. If you are unsure which is the best route, your local tour guide will recommend the ideal route based on your expectations, stamina, experience in mountain climbing, and how long you expect to take. However, always pick the longest route, with the most number of days. Your success rate increases as you increase your distance and days. While most visitors may opt for a shorter route and fewer days, their success rate declines from 85% for eight days to a mere 27% for five days. 3. Ensure you are physically fit While Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the easiest summits to climb, being physically fit will make the climb more enjoyable for you. Ensure that you prepare at least a month or two before the climb. Conduct intense physical exercises at least four to five days a week in the month before climbing the mountain. This can be muscle training, bone strengthening, stretching, or aerobics. Also, take a walk up a hill in your area at least three times a week. If you have a treadmill, conduct a 3 to 4-hour daily training session for a month. Use the stairs instead of the elevator, and if you can, practice carrying some weight (~20lbs) daily to build your muscle strength. While physical training is critical, also ensure that you prepare your lungs for the hike. Remember, at a higher altitude, oxygen tends to lower, and this can impact your health. Page 6

Judging from the title of this article, you already have a sense of what the topic this week will be. Yes, fast food. But definitely not the fast food you’re thinking about. In simplified terms, fast food means just that. Fast, food. Food that is prepared without taking up much time or sometimes, effort. More often than not, it’s the unhealthy kind of food that parents dread their children eating. We’re here to change that narrative. Who says fast food must be unhealthy? There are many reasons why most people, usually the younger generation opt for fast food. It’s quick, easily accessible and cheaper as compared to buying ingredients for a home-cooked meal. It certainly saves on time when you’ve been slaving away at work and can’t be bothered to spend another hour at home preparing a meal. The only downside to fast food is the health risks that come along with all the greasiness of a burger, the sweetness of a heavily chocolate glazed donut and of course not forgetting a strawberry milkshake to ‘wash it all down’. Well, I know it’s not going to be easy to convince yourself or your kids to choose a healthier meal over a pizza but what if we tell you that you just might be able to. Let’s start with the easy stuff. Breakfast options? As far as anyone is concerned cereal is the quickest and easiest breakfast to have on a busy schedule. No problem. I know you’re thinking, you can’t have a burger without fries. Who says it has to be potatoes fries though? Change it up! Try baked sweet potatoes or plantains instead. Another great substitute for fries is of course a garden salad which can be a meal on its own. Toss in some grilled chicken and have yourself a complete, healthy dish. Fish is also a great substitute for meat. Seeing as Dar is on the coast, you are guaranteed fresh seafood on any given day. So yes, you’ve made a slight change in your choices of ‘fast food’ but don’t stop there. When you’re itching for a milkshake or fizzy drink, order a smoothie or fresh juice. It’s lighter to consume and more importantly, a healthier option. Don’t forget Dessert! After eating healthy all day, you should treat yourself to some much-deserved desert. Kids are not very easy to please when it comes to looking for substitutes for healthy dessert, so a few available options include frozen fruit pops, which is basically frozen fruit in form of ice lollies and oatmeal biscuits. Also, a scoop of ice cream once in a while won’t hurt. For the adults however, what’s a better treat after a long day than dark chocolate? Remember, the goal is to look for alternative fast foods to boost your energy and stay healthy. Who says chocolate can’t do that for you? Page 13
