Literacy in the Early years
by Rachel Carlin - Head Teacher at The Schoolhouse and early years literacy expert. Childhood is a journey not a race. Literacy, phonics, learning to read… All of these things are quite daunting. There is so much research and information available out there that it is quite overwhelming to make sense of it all. Sometimes it feels like we, as adults, just learned to read and write, not much thought was given to the process and how this was achieved. The leading expert used by most international schools on literacy is Bonnie Campbell Hill, who sadly passed away in 2011. So, what do we know about emerging literacy in the early years? There are always 2 main questions that parents ask at this juncture and they are: How is my child as a reader and writer? And what can I do to help? Reading and writing are learned behaviours. They are not something that happens instinctively and develops within the framework of real-life activities to get things done. The 5 basic skills for reading and writing are: learning the letter sounds; learning letter formation; blending; identifying sounds in words and spelling the tricky words. So, how do we teach phonics at The Schoolhouse? We use the Jolly Phonics system which as it’s name implies is a jolly old way to learn phonics. The 42 main sounds of English are taught, not just the alphabet. Some sounds like ee or or need two letters to make the sound. These are called digraphs. We don’t teach diagraphs in the early years. Each sound has an action which helps the children remember the letter that represents it. We learn the sound not the letter as this helps with blending. The letters have not been introduced in alphabetical order, making cvc words. We believe that children learn best when reading and writing for purpose, eg a letter to a friend versus a worksheet.

Studies have shown that deeper learning occurs when children are actively involved. Goals for reading and writing should be developmentally appropriate, challenging but achievable. Children need lots of practice so they can consolidate the skills they are learning. The role of the adult is to be supportive, interested and engaged. We provide “scaffolding” that gives support, but encourages independence. Reading and writing acquisition is best conceptualised as a developmental continuum, even though there are common patterns, each child learns at their own rate in their own way. The best gift you can give your child is to read out loud every day. The research is very clear that the most important success for children’s eventual reading is to read out loud to them. Don’t stop reading aloud when your child starts to read. You can model fluency, expression and a love of reading which will support the reading your child is doing in school. As a parent it is important to remember 3 things: attitude is critical part of learning to read and write. Your most important job is that of a cheerleader; we need to focus on what children are trying to communicate in writing before addressing spelling and grammar; reading is more than sounding out words. Reading is about making meaning. Comprehension is vital. And lastly, reading and writing takes time. Young children need a variety of experiences with reading and writing to grow as literacy learners. Children will be at different stages at different times depending on many factors. NonEnglish mother tongue speakers often learn at a slower rate as they transfer skills from their native language to English. GRILLED TANDOORI PRAWN SKEWERS
500 g large prawns, cleaned, peeled and deveined (you can leave the tails on) ½ tsp salt 2 tsp garlic paste 1 tsp ginger paste pinch of ground turmeric 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp red chilli powder 1 Tbsp. tandoori masala 1 Tbsp. Greek yoghurt 2 Tbsp. lemon or lime juice 2 Tbsp. oil 2 Tbsp. melted butter fresh coriander and lemon cheeks for serving 1. Place the prawns in a bowl and sprinkle with the salt. 2. In a separate large bowl, combine the garlic paste, ginger paste, turmeric, coriander, cumin, red chilli powder, tandoori masala, Greek yoghurt, lemon or lime juice and oil. 3. Add the prawns and coat well, and allow to marinate in the fridge for 30 minutes. Bring the prawns to room temperature before cooking. 4. Heat an outdoor grill to medium hot. If using a gas barbecue, heat to 180 °C. 5. Thread the prawns onto skewers and place on the grill. Cook, turning and basting with the melted butter every 2 minutes, for a maximum of 8 minutes. Remove the prawns from the heat when they turn an opaque orange-white or pink-white colour. Prawns tend to appear curled when overcooked. 6. Drizzle with melted butter and serve with fresh coriander and lemon cheeks. Serves 2
