How to Retain Employees and Keep Them Productive Whether you own a business or manage a team, one of the things you have to do is get employees excited about work. Building employees’ morale and motivating them is a duty as old as business. This history has given rise to clichés, like pizza parties and pseudo-motivational speeches, that work to an extent. But in this article, you will go beyond the superficial practices, and learn how to get your employees working at their full potential by tapping into their passion. Understand their needs In any negotiation, knowing what the other side wants is crucial. So you should understand human nature and collective desires. For this purpose, it is best to refer to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. According to this theory, your employees need food, water and rest at the most fundamental level. Once these needs are covered, they need safety. Together, the above two form the group of needs most employer cover. Basic sustenance and security come with a consistent paycheck and job security. Employees, in exchange for this, perform the bare minimum. Most employers do not realize that there are three tiers of human needs that can help their employees become more invested in the business. Your employees need a sense of belonging After securing food and shelter, their next priority is finding a place or a mission to be a part of. This stage is where having a strong purpose can make your business that place. Ideally, your business is making a positive difference for its target market. By focusing on what your product or service is doing for your customers, you can build a mission statement with authenticity. This strategy can get employees to rally behind your cause rather than merely show up to ‘work.’ Your employees need recognition and respect If your employees have their income and security covered, and they also identify with the business as their mission, you have self-esteem needs that you can tap into. This method brings out yet another level of productivity. ‘Employee of the Month’ programs have become a staple in the modern corporate culture because of how effective they can be. However, most managers get the sequence wrong and offer this incentive to employees who do not have their ‘income,’ ‘security,’ and ‘belonging.’ To those employees, ‘Employee of the month’ is merely an empty title.

attitude produces a toxic relationship between the employees and the business that they work for. Employees operating with this worldview are only invested in the business to the degree that they need a job to pay bills. An aggregation of such employees leads to toxic, unproductive work culture. This is where the tough decision comes. You have to know your employees’ dreams. Yes, each one of them. If you are a small business owner or manage a small team, you can afford to sit with your employees and find out personally. If the number of people you are responsible for is too big, enlist a human resources employee to execute the task. Individually, ask employees what they enjoy doing and what they ultimately want to do. And figure out a way in which their dream is tied to the success of your business. You can hire a business consultant to figure out ways to connect employees’ goals to your success. It is a difficult task, but once it is over, your employee-engagement sky-rockets on auto-pilot. Here are two instances of employees’ dreams and how a business can accommodate them. Fictional names are used to illustrate the point. Maryam: I want to be a singer. Maryam’s manager: That’s great! We are putting together an annual talent show, and I’d love for you to sing on stage. The more successful our business is, the higher-profile the judges that we can afford to bring in. John: My dream is to travel the world. John’s manager: I love traveling. You know there are two ways you can go about it. You can pay to travel or get paid to travel. Look, you give me your hundred percent, and I’ll put in a word with the director to place you with client relations. They’re always on a plane, what do you say? All in all, you must remember to fulfill employee needs to unlock additional levels of productivity. While most employers stop at only providing an income and job security, you can tap into the need for belonging and prestige, and your employees’ dreams. But what is most important is to do it in the right sequence.
First, it is critical to have the lower-level needs met before using recognition, respect, or prestige as a motivator. Create recognition programs that go beyond the clichéd ‘Employee of the Month’ title. Have awards, badges, and physical certificates they can take home. All of this brings an added sense of weight to the recognition. Finally, they want to pursue their dreams This stage is where things get tricky. When it comes to their dreams, most employees in the workplace see their bosses as temporary allies. The employees do not believe that they can be all that they can be while working where they are working. Some even see their jobs as an obstacle to their success. This Page 4

The C in ‘Coffee’ stands for culture
Legend has it that coffee was first discovered by an Ethiopian farmer who noticed his goats acting sort of, too energetic for typical goats after chewing on some strange bean like cherries. And that’s all you need to know about where coffee came from, am I right? Over the centuries, coffee has become the most traded commodity in the world. According to some, coffee is the second most popular beverage after water. Coffee was named the most favored breakfast beverage in the 1600s. 1600s?! That only means that it literally replaced the then morning favorites, wine and beer. If you think about it, you can drink coffee at any point of the day. In the morning to get you started with your day. In the afternoon, to get your day going and of course after dinner to settle your meal and end your day. In fact, coffee is so popular that it has its own presence in societal norms like your casual ‘coffee breaks’ or ‘coffee dates’. I mean we’re not trying to dismiss tea but honestly, have you ever heard anyone say they were going on a ‘tea date’? I thought so too. Coffee creates this social ambience and a hub of entertainment. Because coffee has become so ingrained within us especially in socializing, the expansion of simply brewed coffee had to occur. Now, there are over 100 varieties of coffee drinks ranging from cappuccino to affogato. Just to put the context in the differences between the two, a cappuccino is your regular espresso and milk while an affogato has a scoop of gelato in it. Yes, you read that right. Here’s a list of the two ways you can drink coffee for you to explore the next time you go to a café: • Black coffee As the name gives it away, this is basically just coffee and water. No milk or cream is added in this otherwise the core of ‘black coffee’ wouldn’t exist anymore. As easy as it sounds, there are different ways black coffee is made. One way to make your black coffee is an Espresso. This is very popular in countries like Italy where you force high pressure steam through grounded coffee beans to make a thick black coffee with foam on the top. An espresso is often a base for other types of coffee like the americano. Another popular type of black coffee is the instant coffee. This is the easiest type of coffee you make which simply requires pouring hot water over coffee powder or crystals and stirred till dissolved. Since it’s just plainly water and coffee powder, instant coffee is one you drink just to get your caffeine levels up and less about the flavor. Much like the espresso, instant coffee is also used as a base for other types of coffee like the Dalgona coffee.
Flat white coffee is one of the types of milk-based coffees where the espresso is used as a base and a lower amount of steamed milk is poured on top. The espresso is the dominant in this type of coffee simply because there is more of it as compared to the milk. To top it all, we can’t forget the foam. Cappuccinos are also milk-based where again, an espresso is the base followed by milk and foam. The difference between the flat white and a cappuccino is that there are two types of milk used in the cappuccino. To put it directly, this coffee contains 1/3 of espresso, 1/3 foamed milk and 1/3 steamed milk. Another difference between the two is that cappuccinos can be served hot, iced, with cream or just milk. Lastly, we have the Lattes which is basically like a cappuccino but with more milk than espresso. Lattes are known as the coffees with the ‘milkiest’ aromas. The essence of coffee houses For the past 500 years, cafés or coffee houses have been a center for coffee drinkers. Its no secret that culture is infused in every cup of coffee consumed and the presence of coffee houses and cafés have surely helped create that coffee – culture experience. Cafés have been undeniable famous for hosting small gatherings with friends, work meetings, and dates. Or even solo visits to get out of the house and read a book. Anything is possible with a cup of coffee in hand. The endless list of existing and new cafés you can discover and get on board with the coffee culture! Having said that, there are quite a few cafés in Dar, it has become so trendy that we have 9 of them only on Haile Selassie Road .
