100 Trusted Brands in Fleet

Why the 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet report is essential

W

hether you’re procuring or supplying products and services, research shows that Trust is a crucial element in any business relationship. It often leads to long-term, mutually-beneficial affiliations, which save the partner organisations both time and money, and frequently lead to further collaborations and future opportunities, both company-wise and personally. Our in-depth research highlights 100 businesses in 11 sectors, which understand the importance of trust, and the components which create it. These businesses have generated (and are generating) a positive brand essence that goes beyond their direct customers and is widely recognised across an industry. All 100 organisations have built business cultures that give their customers the confidence to work with them and rely on them. This is based on a belief that their actions and intentions are consistent, reliable and ethical, and, it is in this way that trust becomes a foundational element of successful business relationships, transactions, and collaborations. Our research, surveying 400+ fleet professionals, highlights the importance of all elements of trust, including reliability, integrity, competence, consistency and transparency. Trust isn’t always the result of being right 100% of the time, problem solving is another crucial element. In the complex and ever-changing world of fleet transition, it’s inevitable that not everything will go to plan. Trusting a partner business to recognise, reveal and rectify any issues is essential, and the lessons learned can then be applied to any future problems.

Effective shortlisting In this report, we’ve done the legwork, analysing 11 key sectors in fleet, effectively creating essential shortlists for you to consider in your future procurement. When ‘time is money’ and making the right choices is critical, our instant shortlists are more important and valuable than ever. Our data is based on direct feedback from those at the fleet ‘coal-face’; managers who are often making major procurement decisions several times a year. This 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet report condenses all our real-time, real-world survey feedback into an accessible and usable ‘instant shortlist’, revealing the businesses, which, according to the top fleet managers, instil the greatest levels of trust and confidence across the fleet industry.

Our Methodology We distributed an in-depth survey questionnaire to over 400 current fleet managers, asking them to offer feedback on their experiences and perceptions of products and services in the fleet sector, specifically as it pertains to the levels of trust in businesses in the sector in question. The data was then collated and analysed to create overall scores, and to harvest specific and anecdotal feedback on the subject brands.

Data Sources Finding information The number-one source of information for fleets in transition to EVs is manufacturer websites. Fleets also trust the information provided in manufacturer e-newsletters and one-in-four fleets also uses Linked In as a source of trusted information. This information is accessed via a wide range of digital devices, while print products are also heavily relied on. * The Agency Model allows companies to focus on their core business while relying on experts to manage the complexities of their vehicle fleets. This arrangement can lead to cost savings, improved fleet performance and reduced administrative burdens for businesses with sizeable vehicle fleets.

Who do fleets trust the most? We’ve dropped the OEM cars and vans categories this year (they’ll appear in their own separate report), to concentrate on the very best products and services in the fleet sector. We’ve identified 11 of the most crucial sectors in Fleet procurement and the graph

What do you think is the biggest challenge that Holman will face in the next decade? Naturally, alternative fuels, there’s still a lot to playout there. We intentionally chose not to be at the forefront of this change in the market. I know that sounds odd, but we made that decision a couple of years ago, purely because there's so much that’s unknown right now. We're very much in the embryonic stages of this huge change across our industry, so, we wanted to just take a little step back, and watch others perhaps make some mistakes, and then learn from those before we really leaned in. So, we've done that, and we are now stepping up.

Do you think Holman had a particular USP that won it the BT fleet contract? I would say, transparency – and earning their trust. With BT, we knew very early in the process, that it was going to be a huge change for them, so, we had to go in there and show how things could be different. I’ll use that word ‘transparency’ again – transparency in how we use data and how we make data freely-accessible to them. And it's not just our data, it's data that we have through our global reach, given our other territories. So, we took them on that journey with us to see how it could look different, and how we could use the data to really optimise the investment in their fleet, which for someone like BT is significant. How does Holman plan for change? Something I'm always keen to say, is that when So, we've built a roadmap for five years, but that's you're supporting 100,000-plus vehicles, every now iterative, so every year, we look at that roadmap, and again, things will go wrong. We have a huge team working on that, and it’s a great example of the culture of our business, that we've got people from across the globe helping us in that endeavour. We made a commitment on the day we announced that we'd been successful with BT, that all our customers will benefit from the significant investments we're now making across our business. What the BT contract has provided is the ability for us to accelerate some of those. What makes you happiest at work? The people I work with. I know it’s a cliché, but I enjoy coming in every day. So, that is the most rewarding thing, seeing people that are happy in their jobs. Again, we don't get it right 100% of the time, but we acknowledge when we get it wrong, and we learn from it. It was really interesting that the survey that 360 Media Group did, showed that two-thirds of fleets recognise this, but are yet to take action. I found that really surprising. I can't stress enough how important it is this year for fleets to transition to 4G, to ensure the continuation of a reliable service. So, managers really need SmartCam to manage their fleets effectively. Your tracking and dash cam solution needs to be integrated, it needs to be joined up. Implementing a standalone dashcam and a disparate tracking system is going to be really difficult to manage, and you need to be able to reliably and remotely retrieve the footage from the dashcam. In my opinion, standalone dashcams are ineffective for fleets – they're more of a consumer product. For example, retrieving footage from a fleet that's nationwide is going to be virtually impossible with a standalone dash cam. You may have issues with the SD card, the footage can corrupt, and it becomes a real headache for fleet managers to constantly monitor then a mediocre service the next is just not good that. SmartCam combats that. It's a cloud-based enough. That approach makes it a real struggle to solution, and SD card status is reported online, generate trust. Talking Trust with… Niall Riddell INTERVIEW

Back in 2018/19, one of the things we wanted to do was launch a B2C proposition for our residential customers. That proposition was going to be a car, a home charger and a smart energy tariff, and we wanted to add the ability for the driver to go out on the highway, find a charger, plug in and put all the costs back on their home energy bill. That solution didn't exist because it needed two things: a big, aggregated network and a technology partner that enabled it to happen. I started investigating this space and I soon realised that the people who are really going to suffer with the fragmented landscape, are going to be businesses. So, we sat down and explored the space and realised that effectively what we were doing was looking to rebuild the refuelling experience for the 21st century. IR That’s no small undertaking! Taking partners with you on that journey requires high levels of trust. How did you generate that?

EV Charging Annual Survey by Zapmap Insights EV charging gurus, Zapmap Insights, carried out an extensive survey of the sector. Here’s what 4,358 BEV and PHEV drivers told them Zapmap’s annual EV Charging Survey provides a comprehensive overview of EV use and charging in the UK. The facts and stats it delivers are fascinating. For example, 90% of respondents to the Zapmap survey use public EV charging points, and the younger they are the more likely they are to use public chargers (100% of 25-34 year olds, down to 88% aged 75-84). As EV batteries continue to improve, range anxiety becomes less of an issue, but is replaced, to an extent, by the uncertainty of whether you’ll find an available charger at your planned stop. The Zapmap survey is indispensable when it comes to understanding and improving the UK’s charging network, providing a real-world view of the successes and failures in this growing sector. One question the Zapmap survey asked was, which charging services respondents were most satisfied or dissatisfied with. Here (right) are the top 21 charge point operators listed, with their scores.

What is Zapmap? The UK’s leading charge point mapping service, Zapmap was founded in 2014 with a mission to make EV charging simple, wherever you go. On iOS/ Android and desktop, Zapmap helps electric car drivers search for available charge points, plan longer journeys, pay for charging and share updates with other drivers. With its extensive database of charging locations and user-friendly interface, Zapmap claims the widest choice of charging options in the UK. Zapmap not only displays key information about each charge point, including compatibility and pricing details, but live availability status on 70% of chargers. An integral part of supporting the wider EV industry, Zapmap Insights is the leading source of EV charging data and insights, providing unrivalled data and expert analysis into the shape and usage of EV charging infrastructure, as well as the attitudes and behaviours of EV drivers. Charge Your Car

My charging experience with Zapmap I had a brilliant Volkswagen ID.5 BEV on test for a week and, as I can’t home charge yet, I immediately downloaded Zapmap, which revealed all the chargers in my city and beyond. The app provides charger locations, charging brand, number and type of charger connectors, charging output in kW, plus price per kW and (in most cases) the payment methods accepted. On the majority of chargers, there is also live availability status showing whether chargers are in use or broken. In that week, I drove almost 1000 miles, and the lowest I let the battery level get was 34%, which equated to 100 miles. All charging was done at public charge points. These were: ● On-street with POD point – 1 out of 1 chargers working ● Tot Hill Services with Shell Recharge – 6 out

of 8 chargers working ● Shell Recharge at West Town, Peterborough – 3 out of 4 chargers working ● Central Stamford car park with evolt – 4 out of 4 chargers working ● Osprey two-charger station in Dorchester – 1 out of 2 chargers working In total 15 of the 19 chargers were working (79%), though the one in Peterborough was down for the entire week I had the car, and is still non-functioning as I write, four weeks later. I had to wait nine minutes for a charger to be vacated at Tot Hill Services, but, overall, using the Zapmap app I found all the charge I needed quickly and easily. Of course, queues and broken chargers give EV naysayers ammunition, but for me the entire experience was good or great. If I had a moan, it’s that I was paying up to 85p/kilowatt. JS

Respondent profiles Of the 4,358 respondents, 88% were male and 12% female. 30% of them are aged 55-64, with 77% aged from 45-74. 20% are based in the South-East with 5% in Greater London. The South-West accounts for 12%, Yorkshire and the North-East 11%, the West and North-West 19%, the Midlands and East Anglia 19%, Wales 6%, Scotland 7% and Northern Ireland 1%. 93% of respondents drive BEVs, while 7% drive PHEVs. Nissan Leaf, VW ID.3, Tesla Model 3, Kia e-Niro and Renault Zoe are the most popular vehicles among respondents, with 29% of them acquiring

their EV in 2022. For 72% of them, this was their first EV, and 49% of them have no other vehicle (25% have one BEV and one ICE vehicle). 84% of respondents have a home charger, and 98% have private off-street parking. EV Services A

s fleets transition towards the 2035 alternative-fuels deadline, expert support and advice from specialist suppliers are more crucial than ever. This category shortlists 11 such organisations that offer tools and services to ease the evolution towards electric vehicles. Each one has proven itself and generated a high level of trust and confidence in its customers and the wider market. Decades of gentle evolution in the way we fuelled our ICE fleet vehicles, resulted in near-perfect systems and processes for accessing, paying for and recharging our petrol and diesel usage. However, with the transition to EVs, those slick systems are being superseded by a refuelling/ recharging revolution, with much higher levels of choice and complexity, as the sector consolidates its multitude of options. From apps and access to tariffs and tax, we’ve entered a brave new world that can confound

even the most savvy company vehicle driver. That makes the products and services offered by these 11 enterprises even more essential for the smooth running of fleets and the confidence and convenience of company vehicle users. From finding cost-effective, working, vacant charge points where you need them, to being able to pay quickly and easily, are all key factors in running an efficient and cost-effective fleet… and that’s before you get to charging data and reimbursing staff for their home charging. Amalgamating numerous charging invoices, and assessing the data they contain is also essential in a well-run fleet. This category contains recent start-up businesses as well as long-established, global brands, but they all have one thing in common – they’ve successfully focused their energies on creating practical, intuitive and efficient tools to assist fleets with their EV switchovers.

Rental T

hese 10 rental firms have earned the highest trust scores in their sector. Each one can be relied upon to fulfil all lengths of vehicle rental solutions for their clients. The agile and flexible nature of these rental firms enables them to supply a wide range of cars and vans, and often at short notice. This ability to deliver time after time, builds a strong sense of trust with clients, who are confident in the knowledge that they will never be left without the vehicles they require. These days, vehicle rental contracts range from by-the-hour hire to multi-month agreements. This responsiveness, and the cost-effectiveness of such deals, makes renting an ideal and often costeffective alternative to running a fleet of pool cars. Only paying for vehicles when they’re needed, also removes the long-term commitment to pay vehicle leases or even to purchase vehicles outright – thereby minimising the financial burden of running a large fleet. The rental option can be particularly beneficial for smaller businesses or those with fluctuating transportation needs. By taking the rental option, businesses can quickly adapt their fleet to meet the ever-changing needs they face, perhaps due to seasonality, sudden growth or even downsizing. The business environment during lockdown is a case in point.

38

Powered by 360 Media Group

Shorter-term rentals may also favour businesses with diverse and evolving fleet requirements, which might be affected by the needs of specific contracts they undertake. Car rental agencies can typically offer a wide range of vehicles, from cars to trucks and vans. With flexible car rental, maintenance and repair responsibilities often fall on the rental agency, reducing the company's operational and fleetmanagement burden. Likewise, short-term rentals mitigate against some of the risks inherent in traditional leasing, such as depreciation, accidents and fluctuating resale values. With flexible car rental, many of these risks are transferred to the renter. In this way, fleet-related expenses can be more predictable, protecting the company from unexpected financial shocks. Add to all these benefits a minimising of fleet administration time, and it’s clear that flexible car rental can be a practical and cost-effective solution to supply many companies' vehicle requirements. However, while short-term vehicle solutions simplify fleet management, boost a firm’s adaptability and reduce its financial risks, a trusting relationship between fleet manager and rental supplier is essential, and this is likely to be highlighted when it comes to fair hire charges, vehicle damage assessments and the cost of any repairs.

Telematics/Tracking T

elematics and tracking systems have become indispensable tools for modern UK business vehicle fleets, as connected vehicle technologies have evolved to offer benefits in safety, efficiency and cost control. The ongoing development of these crucial technologies is evident in the fact that 12 businesses in this sector have made our 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet 2024 shortlist. Telematics provides real-time feedback on vehicle usage and driver behaviour, boosting productivity and safety levels, cutting costs and even easing the transition towards EVs. At a basic level, telematics and tracking simply involve fitting a ‘black box’ to a fleet vehicle and watching the data come in. However, these 12 trusted brands take the science of telemetry way beyond that, as their clients are shown how to analyse the data they receive and implement

changes based on it. This information can be used to maximise the efficiency of their fleet operations. In terms of safety and protecting the business from reputational damage, telematics and tracking systems provide real-time data on vehicle location, speed and driving styles, enabling fleet managers to monitor and address unsafe driving practices promptly. This reduces the risk of accidents, lowers insurance premiums and minimises other costs. Telematics systems also offer insights into vehicle performance and fuel efficiency – identifying, for example, fuel-wasting behaviours such as aggressive driving. As well as helping the environment, fleet managers can also optimise routes, reduce idle times and manage maintenance schedules more effectively, resulting in lower operational costs and improved productivity. Real-time tracking also allows businesses to provide accurate delivery estimates to customers.

Vehicle Conversion B

espoke vehicle conversions and van fitouts create highly functional workspaces for mobile technicians and staff, that are perfectly tailored to their specific roles and requirements. These conversions pay back quickly through improved working practices and time efficiencies, while also improving safety and security. When everything has a designated place, there is less chance of items shifting during transit, potentially causing harm or damage. A well-organised, high-quality vehicle conversion for transporting and storing tools and materials, optimises available workspace, and could even mean you can use a smaller and cheaper vehicle. Professional, tailored conversions can also pay dividends in the long term, as staff will be happier and more productive, while customers are more likely to perceive your business as professional and efficient. A professionally converted van or vehicle presents a more polished and trustworthy image to clients, resulting in increased customer confidence and potentially higher-paying jobs. Custom fit-outs keep tools well-organised, not only saving time, but also reducing wear and tear on equipment, leading to longer tool life. Many conversions include weatherproofing measures, like sealed compartments and climatecontrol systems. This protects tools and materials from the elements, maintaining their condition.

46

Powered by 360 Media Group

Trusting your converter to create the right solution for you, first time, is crucial with fleet vehicles, so open and clear conversations will eliminate later issues and potential problems with suitability and compatibility. This category also features conversions including tipper mechanisms, dropsides, external glass frails, van racking and the creation of safe and reliable transportation systems for portable specialist equipment and technology. Many vehicle converters also offer signwriting, graphics and vehicle branding solutions, along with the fitting of Speedliner systems to protect the interior of your workhorse vehicles. Choosing an experienced converter is a vital part of getting the right result, as is taking on board the input of your own staff. Some converters have configurator software that lets customers design the vehicle storage and racking to suit their exact requirements, a technology that can speed up the conversion process and result in a better final product, that's more suited to its role. In summary, professional van and vehicle conversions and fit-outs are essential for tradespeople and mobile technicians. They enhance organisation, efficiency, safety and professionalism, while offering long-term cost savings. These modifications ultimately contribute to a more productive and successful business.

100 Trusted Brands in Fleet

A-Z Glossary of Fleet Industry Terminology There’s a lot of jargon in the UK fleet business… here we bust it all! AC motor (Alternating Current) – In an EV, an AC motor is considered highly efficient; lighter weight with fewer parts; more reliable and better for regenerative braking than a DC (Direct Current) motor. However, they cost more, require complex control systems and get hotter than DC motors. Agency Model – A business arrangement where a fleet management agency or third-party provider is employed to manage various aspects of a company's vehicle fleet; allowing companies to focus on their core business. Alternative fuels – Power sources, other than petrol and diesel, used to propel vehicles. For example, electricity, LPG, biodiesel and hydrogen. Asset tracking – The use of GPS (or other technologies) to monitor and accurately locate fleet vehicles in real time. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) – An EV that relies solely on a rechargeable battery for propulsion, with no internal combustion engine. Benchmarking – Measuring and assessing specific criteria to compare the performance of products, services or organisations. These criteria may be financial, environmental, fuel-consumption, servicelevel or user-feedback based. Benefit in kind (BiK) – This is a tax levied on employees who are provided with a company vehicle for personal use. It is currently based on the vehicle's value and emissions. Biofuels – Any fuel artificially manufactured from organic sources, including ethanol, biodiesel or other liquid fuels made from crops such as corn or sugarcane. Business mileage – The number of miles a vehicle is driven solely for business-related purposes. CCS (Combined Charging System) – A fastcharging standard for electric vehicles that integrates both AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) charging into a single connector. CHAdeMO charging – A fast-charging protocol used for electric vehicles that enables quick charging by delivering high-voltage direct current (DC) to the battery, reducing charging time. Cost-benefit analysis – A systematic process used to evaluate potential benefits and costs.

56

DC motor (Direct Current) – In an EV, DC motors are considered a simpler and cheaper option than AC motors, with cheaper control systems and better compatibility with charging infrastructure. Disposal policy – An organisation’s strategy for how it disposes of vehicles it no longer needs. It typically includes a depreciation and damage assessment, transportation to a disposal site; cancelling insurance and claiming back unused road tax; plus any preparation for sale, and auction fees. Domestic hours – The maximum number of hours a professional driver can operate vehicles in any given period on UK roads. The limits can be found on the www.gov.uk website. Driver’s handbook – Vehicle operators should be provided with a handbook that contains all the information necessary to operate a vehicle safely and effectively. This is often supplemented with operator training. Driver licence checks – Online checks that reveal a vehicle operator’s driving history. Used for driver verification, insurance compliance and assessing driver suitability. (See Driver Services section) Driver records – The essential information an organisation must hold about its drivers. Early termination charges – The fees incurred if a lease vehicle contract is cancelled before the agreed end date and the vehicle returned early. Electric vehicle incentives – Government incentives to promote the adoption of EVs. Electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) – The equipment, including charging stations and cables, used to connect an EV to an electricity source. Electronic Logging Device (ELD) – A vehicle-based device that records a driver's hours at the wheel. Used to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Energy management – Strategies and software used to optimise the charging and energy consumption of EVs within a fleet. EV – Electric vehicle. A motorised vehicle powered by battery or hybrid-electric-powered propulsion. Excess mileage charges – The fees incurred if, on its return, a lease or rental vehicle has exceeded the mileage agreed in the contract.

Fleet asset register – A comprehensive database that records and tracks essential information about all vehicles and equipment within a company's fleet. This can include vehicle details, maintenance history and ownership data. Fleet maintenance records – This data details any inspections and work undertaken on a fleet vehicle, including servicing, safety inspections, accident damage, vehicle faults and any repairs carried out. It helps fleet managers to minimise costs, maintain warranties and even to defend legal actions. Fuel management programme A well-implemented fuel management programme can reduce a fleet’s fuel consumption and cost. A programme may include elements such as data collection, driver training and a review of fuel-suppliers. Grey fleet – Employee-owned vehicles used for company business. Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) –The total weight of a vehicle, including its kerbweight (unloaded weight) and any passengers, cargo, and accessories. It is a critical parameter for vehicle safety, performance and compliance with weight regulations.

Kerbweight – The weight of a vehicle when fully equipped, but without passengers and not loaded with any cargo. It includes all essential fluids and a full fuel tank. Key management – The systems used to log access to vehicle keys and keep spare keys secure. It also ensures that only drivers with appropriate training are given access to certain vehicles. Kilowatt-hour (kWh) – A unit of measurement for electric energy storage and charging, often used to describe the capacity of an EV's battery. Lease agreement – A contract that allows a company to use a vehicle for a specified period in exchange for regular payments. The company does not own the vehicle and does not have to fund the initial purchase. LPG-powered vehicles – LPG vehicles use Liquified Petroleum Gas, an alternative fuel. LPG is usually 40 to 50 percent cheaper than petrol and diesel. However, conversions can be expensive and LPG fuel consumption is higher.

Home charging – Charging an EV at a residential location. Best utilised when the EV can be parked on a driveway or private parking bay.

Maintenance contract – An agreement between a fleet owner and a maintenance provider to deliver an approved schedule of maintenance for each vehicle. This maintenance is usually provided as part of the fixed monthly charge for any vehicle that is hired or leased.

HOS (Hours of service) compliance – Adherence to regulations governing the number of hours a commercial driver can work and drive.

Maintenance schedule – A timetable to deliver vehicle inspections, servicing, maintenance and repairs, to ensure a fleet's ongoing effectiveness.

Hybrid vehicles – Hybrid vehicles combine two propulsion methods, usually a petrol engine and electric motor(s).

Maintenance service intervals – The length of time between vehicle inspections and services.

Hydrogen power (fuel cell) – Still in development, hydrogen-fuel-cell vehicles, use hydrogen gas stored in tanks to generate electricity through a chemical process. This electricity powers the vehicle, and the primary emission from these vehicles is water vapour. Hydrogen power (ICE engine) – Still in development, hydrogen-powered, internalcombustion-engined vehicles use hydrogen gas as a fuel source in a traditional internal combustion engine. Idle time – The amount of time a vehicle's engine is running while the vehicle is not in motion. In-house maintenance – When SMR work on business vehicles is carried out by the company’s own maintenance department, instead of being outsourced to a contractor. Journey planning – The process of optimising routes and scheduling to maximise efficiency and minimise travel time. Important when driving EVs.

Non-revenue vehicles – Vehicles used for administrative or support purposes that do not directly generate income for the company. O Licence (Operator's licence) – This licence is a legal requirement for businesses or individuals who operate goods vehicles over a certain weight (usually 3.5 tonnes) for hire or reward. It ensures compliance with vehicle maintenance, safety and driver management regulations. Optimum replacement time – The time in a vehicle’s lifecycle when the costs of retention outweigh the benefits of keeping it, and the vehicle should be replaced. Over-specified fleet – A vehicle or fleet is overspecified when it has unnecessary features. This is usually a result of inefficient procurement and can increase purchase, running and maintenance costs. Optimal vehicle specification is crucial in running an efficient fleet. Personal use – The use of a business vehicle for non-business-related activities.

100 Trusted Brands in Fleet PG9 – PG9 certificates are typically issued by a Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA) vehicle examiner for defects that render a vehicle unsafe or degrade its roadworthiness. A PG9 prohibits the use of the vehicle until the defects are remedied.

ULEZ (Ultra-low emissions zone) – A geographical area, usually within a city, where vehicles must meet emissions standards to enter and operate. Often, higher-emission vehicles can enter the ULEZ, but are subjected to a charge.

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) – A hybrid vehicle that features both an internal combustion engine and a rechargeable battery.

Utilisation rate – The percentage of time a vehicle is in use compared to the total available time, used to assess fleet efficiency.

Predictive maintenance – Using data analysis to predict when vehicle maintenance will be needed to minimise downtime and repair costs.

Vehicle downtime – The period that a vehicle is unavailable, often due to SMR requirements. This is minimised in effective fleets.

Public charging – Charging an EV at commercial charging stations located in public areas.

Vehicle excise duty (VED) – An annual vehicle tax based on fuel type and CO2 emissions.

Qualifying vehicles – Vehicles that meet criteria for tax incentives, rebates or emissions standards.

Vehicle rotation – The moving of vehicles around a fleet to offset and equalise their mileages.

Regenerative braking – A system that recovers energy during braking and deceleration, converting it into electricity to recharge the battery.

Vehicle trackers – Electronic devices attached to vehicles to monitor key data including, location, speed and driving behaviours.

Replacement policy – The agreement for renewing you fleet vehicles, usually based on age or mileage.

Vehicle utilisation – The amount of time a vehicle is used, as a proportion of the time it is available. Effective fleets maximise their utilisation ratios.

Residual value – The resale value remaining in a vehicle, at the point it is removed from a fleet. Route optimisation – The process of finding the most efficient routes for vehicles, to minimise travel time and fuel consumption. Speed limiters – Some commercial vehicles, registered since 1 January 2005, must be fitted with a speed limiter to restrict their maximum speed to 56mph for goods vehicles and 62mph for buses. Spot hire – Short-term hire of a vehicle to fill temporary gaps in fleet requirements. For example, to cover increased seasonal demand. Tachographs – These devices record the driving time, rest periods and other work-related data of drivers in commercial vehicles, to ensure compliance with regulations. Tendering - A tender process invites bids from suppliers to provide a product or service. Telematics – The technology that combines telecommunications and informatics to send and receive data about a vehicle's performance location, battery status and charging history, etc. Total cost of ownership (TCO) – The total cost of owning and operating a vehicle over its entire lifespan, including purchase price and depreciation.

Watt-Hour per mile (Wh/mi) – A measure of an EV's energy consumption, indicating how many watt-hours it requires to travel one mile. Whole-life cost – The total cost of owning a vehicle during its time on a fleet. This can include: procurement cost, lease cost, depreciation, tax, fuel, maintenance, insurance, disposal value, customisation and early-termination costs. Any residual value may be deducted from these costs. This value is crucial in determining the real cost of running a vehicle.
