BRING ON THE LAUGHS

Sure, you could watch a movie, but we think an hour-long stand-up special is the way to go. Who doesnʼt need a good laugh these days? Hereʼs a few of our favorite female stand-ups to check out. Maria Bamford, Old Baby You may not know the name Maria Bamford,

but if youʼre a fan of stand-up comedy, youʼll recognize her. Her quirky voices, weird phrases and off-the-beaten-path tangents are what make her fans come back for more. In this special, Maria takes her stand-up to the streets. Park benches, bowling alleys, bookstores—if thereʼs an audience, sheʼs sharing her oddball insight. Wanda Sykes, Not Normal Wanda Sykes is no stranger to comedy. Sheʼs had us laughing for decades, as a matter of

fact. But in this Netflix special, Wanda lays it all on the line, everything from politics and body image to aging gracefully (or not!). In her mid-40s, Wanda humorously speculates about what old age will be like, talks relationships and charms the audience. Ellen DeGeneres, Relatable After a 15-year break from stand-up comedy, Americaʼs favorite daytime host, Ellen DeGeneres, has made her way back to the stage for a new special. Taped in Seattle, this special features Ellen poking fun at whether or not she is “relatable” to her fans and the general public anymore. And while thatʼs all funny, itʼs her insight into everyday life, such as buying new shoes, that really brings the laughs. Ali Wong, Hard Knock Wife Ali Wong, most known for her first stand-up role, Baby Cobra, from 2016. Since then, she has made several television and movie appearances, including Netflixʼs Always Be My Maybe and a recurring role on American Housewife. Her second standup act (filmed while pregnant, just like the first) is filled with anecdotes about married life after children and the perils of motherhood. She discusses breastfeeding and babiesʼ diapers in such a way that youʼll never see motherhood quite the same.

If your preferred show isnʼt on Netflix or you donʼt have Chrome, check out these other party platform options. Metastream Live chat while watching videos on a variety of platforms, including YouTube, Twitch, Hulu, Netflix and more. Works with Chrome and Firefox browsers. Scener Allows up to 10 friends to watch together, plus thereʼs a live chat feature. It only works with Netflix, though. TwoSeven This watch-party extension works with Amazon Prime, Netflix, Vimeo, HBO Now and YouTube. There is usually a subscription fee that ranges between $5-$20 a month, which also allows the service to be used with Disney+ and Hulu. Because of Covid-19, though, the service currently runs for $3 a month.

HERE’S TO FRIENDSHIP

Of course, no girlsʼ night is complete without a few cocktails, right? If you have a grocery list going, you may want to add a few ingredients to the list. Heading to pick up take-out from a local restaurant? Many are also selling pre-made cocktails or bottles of wine. If youʼre more of a DIYer, hereʼs a few recipes to consider, courtesy of The Food Network.

PINEAPPLE COCKTAIL

1 ½ ounces pineapple juice 1 ounce vodka 1 ounce orange liqueur ½ ounce fresh squeezed lime juice Turbinado sugar for the rim (optional) Pineapple wedges Maraschino cherry

Chill a martini glass in the freezer. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the pineapple juice, vodka, orange liqueur and lime juice. Cover, and shake vigorously, until combined and chilled. Scatter turbinado sugar onto a small plate, wet the rim of the glass and dip it into the sugar. Strain the drink into the chilled glass, and garnish with skewered pineapple and cherry.

*WATERMELON COCKTAIL

(makes 4 glasses)

• 5 cups seedless watermelon chunks, plus wedges or balls for garnish • 3 tablespoons lime juice, plus lime wedge for garnish • 2 tablespoons sugar, depending on watermelon sweetness • ¾ cup silver tequila or your preferred liquor, such as vodka or rum • 2 tablespoons orange liqueur, optional Combine the watermelon, lime juice and sugar to taste in a blender, and blend until very smooth. Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a small pitcher. Stir in the tequila and orange liqueur, if using. Fill glass with ice, and pour the cocktail into the glass, garnishing with watermelon and lime wedge. MAY ‘20

The Marion County Public Library branches are closed to in-person visits, but you can still check out and return books to the library. The entire card catalog is available to search online (find it at marioncountyfl.org under departments and agencies), and you can call ahead to have your favorites waiting for you when you arrive. Search by topic, title, author and more. Curbside pickup is simple and library staff members are available to help out via phone or email. Curbside service is offered Monday-Friday, 10am-6pm, and Saturday, 10am-4pm, at the following branches: Belleview, Dunnellon, Forest Freedom, Marion Oaks and Headquarters-Ocala. The Fort McCoy and Reddick locations are available for curbside pickup on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am6pm and Saturday from 10am-4pm.

Thereʼs nothing quite like curling up with a favorite book. And yes, audiobooks count. Did you know that even middle and high school students say they like to listen to a book read aloud? Itʼs a wonderful way to spend quality time with the kids. Classics like Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket books are proven favorites for elementary or middle school aged kids, or you can opt for a read like Frindle—who says a pen has to be called a pen?

Oh, and the book takes place during an election year, too! The book struck a chord in China and was subsequently banned in the country. My family was on the lawn below waiting to sing to him. While it wasnʼt the 90th birthday we had planned for him, we still found a way. Until life returns to normal, the important thing seems to be just doing our best: in entertaining ourselves, connecting with friends and celebrating with family.

Refinish a table or nightstand

Acrylic pour painting Have you seen this on YouTube? If not, put down what youʼre doing and go search “pour painting” right now. This painting technique is so simple yet so beautiful. There are thousands of videos to choose from, and all you need to get started are some blank canvases and acrylic paint. You start by adding paint colors, a little at a time, to a cup or funnel. Layer the paint in the order youʼd like it to appear on the canvas. Next, slowly pour the paint onto the canvas, allowing it to fall at will. A quick treatment to the canvas and youʼre ready to bend and turn the canvas to create your work of art. Gloves are a must by

If you have that table you picked up at a yard sale months ago still lying around, thereʼs no time like the present to fix it up. A quick trip to a hardware store for some paint, maybe some new knobs if needed, and youʼre on your way. For a nice, farmhouse-type look, pick up chalk paint. Its dull finish looks rustic and aged but

protects your piece from nicks and scrapes. Did you know you can make your own chalk paint with some flat paint and plaster of Paris? Check out lowes.com and click on ideas for the recipe, plus lots of other DIY suggestions and tips.

EASY AS 1-2-3 Paint by number Remember when you were young and had one of those velvety paint-by-number sets? The ones with the little connected samples of paint? They still make those! If youʼre looking to paint, but arenʼt much of a freehand artist, this is a great place to start. The finished product can be as simple or as complicated as you like, and the categories and options are seemingly endless. One of our favorite sites is allpaintbynumbers.com. Their collection is broken into categories and even includes favorites like cartoon characters and holiday prints. You can even upload one of your own photos and have it turned into your very own paint-by-number set.

SWEET SERENITY Serenity jar Weʼve all felt a little extra stress over the last few months, right? A serenity or calming jar may be just what you need to encourage your mind to focus when itʼs needed the most. These glitter-filled jars are mesmerizing to watch and easy to make. Hereʼs what you need: • A glass or plastic jar • A jug of warm water • 60 ml glitter glue, color of choice • 3 drops of food coloring, color of choice • Glitter of choice

PRESERVE THE PAST Create a scrapbook If youʼve always wanted your own photo book of memories, there are plenty of websites and programs that make the process a cinch. A Google search of “make a photo book” will yield lots of results. Once you find the company and price point you like, start planning. Maybe you want to commemorate a certain family vacation or event, or you want to chronicle a whole year. Start selecting and organizing the photos you plan to use. Many of the online services offer premade pages that you just drop your photos into. If you want a more personalized book, you can choose everything from the page color to the wording and font colors used. Pinterest is a great source for finding scrapbook page ideas that you can borrow from and make your own.

find them there! Choose to make a wreath for each season. (Yes, itʼs that easy!) Think pinks, blues and yellows for spring, and browns, oranges and reds for fall. When choosing fabric, choose prints with small patterns in coordinating colors. For a more subdued shabby chic look, choose fabrics that are tan and brown in color. All you need to get started is a wire wreath form, fabric, scissors and a ruler. What are you waiting for?

To start the process, add warm water to your jar, followed by the glitter glue. Stir until they are combined. Add three or so drops of food coloring and stir. The more food coloring, the darker the water. Next, pour in the glitter. For a varied look, choose multiple colors and/or a combination of fine and chunky glitter. Stir well until the ingredients are mixed, and then top the rest of the jar off with water. If youʼve got the contents just how you like them, we recommend a swirl of glue on the inside of the jar lid to prevent glittery accidents in the future. Tip: For a galaxy look, combine blue, purple and gray glitter.

Be A Gardening Guru If you’ve started a garden during this time of social distancing, you’re not alone. // B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N

“It is important for youth to get outside and explore their worlds,” says Erin, who has young children she gardens with at home. “It can serve as an outdoor classroom when we currently donʼt have traditional ones. In the garden they can learn math through garden design, plant spacing and weighing harvests. They can learn to be creative when designing their gardens and use their reasoning and science skills when interacting with problems.” Erin notes that her daughter, Josie, pictured here, chose to plant tomatoes and squash, while her son chose to plant only potatoes so he could make french fries. Although the program will officially end after the growing season, the online course will still be available, as will some form of the popular Facebook group. “[The group] has proven to be an excellent way to communicate with gardeners,” says Erin. This program is aimed to help educate home gardeners in North Central Florida; participants in other locations should contact their local Extension service to get more specific information and planting dates. personally know more than a handful of people who have exercised their green thumb in order to stay busy during this strange and never-ending time of home sequestering—my family included. So while searching for some tips on how to grow the best tomatoes, I came across a fun and family-friendly gardening program, hosted by the University of Florida/IFAS Extension of Marion and Columbia Counties. Enter the Victory2020 Garden program. If youʼre not familiar with the concept of Victory Gardens, hereʼs a brief history lesson, according to the Columbia County UF/IFAS Extension website: “Victory gardens or ʻwar gardensʼ were popular during World War I and World War II. They were promoted by the government to help provide fresh produce to individuals at home and help supplement food rationing. [Gardening] also provided opportunities for families to ʻdo their partʼ for the war effort. During 1943, the USDA estimated that over 20 million gardens were planted in the United States.” The Victory2020 Garden program began as a way to give gardeners a sense of community, especially while weʼre all socially distanced. “In the beginning, each county was planning something separately,” says Erin Harlow, Residential and Commercial Horticulture Agent and Master Gardener Volunteer coordinator with University of Florida/IFAS Extension Columbia County. “When we realized, we joined forces to have a stronger program. The program is important because it give[s] gardeners a place where they [can] connect over their similarities and [stay] excited and positive about something.” The program also encourages gardening as a means of stress relief and provides learning opportunities by both UF/IFAS agents and other casual gardeners. Once you sign up for the program online, youʼll have access to the eight-week online course about growing your own food, a private Facebook group for real-time troubleshooting and the Garden Book Club. Youʼll receive a laminated Victory2020 Garden poster with tips for your garden and seeds to start your garden, while supplies last. If youʼre introducing young kids to gardening, there are several opportunities for them to participate. In addition to the youth activities in the online course, families can request a 4-H record book to complete with their garden. They can also participate in the youth book club activities.

Families typically celebrate Mother’s Day with meals at her favorite restaurant or spa days with the girls. This year, though, you’ll have to get a little creative. // B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N

otherʼs Day might look a little different this year than in yearʼs past, and you might be wondering how to show her just how much you care in this time of social distancing. Whether youʼre a spouse hoping to craft the perfect day or adult children looking for ideas on how to make the day extra special when you canʼt get together as a family, there are still plenty of options for showing Mom how much she means to you.

FROM HOME

If youʼre the significant other and want to spoil your childrenʼs mother, here are a few ways to celebrate without leaving the house. Start a garden together. Purchase all the essentials in advance, or even better, do some of the more mundane tasks—like clearing the area—beforehand on the sly. And then spend the day planning and planting. Sheʼll appreciate the forethought you put into it. Host a wine and canvas night for the family. (The wine is for the adults, of course!) Order some canvases and paint online, and pick up her favorite bottle of wine (and maybe throw in a dessert). Or, contact Picassoʼs Palette in Ocala and order a few of their take-and-make pottery and canvas packages. They will even deliver them for free locally. Plan your own photo session. This one is ideal if you already have a 20

fancy camera and tripod at home, but honestly many of the new phones take some pretty amazing pictures, too. Tell her to dress up, pick out some cute outfits for the kids (or ask her to do it without telling her why) and bring her outside around sunset. The lighting during the “golden hour” is perfect for getting amazing shots, even if you arenʼt a professional. And then snap away as she interacts with the kiddos and pets if you have them. If youʼre not sure about your photography skills, maybe research a few pointers online beforehand. And remember, it really is the thought that counts. Take care of the meals for the day. Whether itʼs breakfast in bed or ordering in from her favorite local restaurant, take this chore off her plate. And speaking of chores, send her back to bed, run her a bubble bath or simply tell her to relax on the porch with a good book while you and the kids clean the house. We promise, this one wonʼt go unnoticed.

Make it about her. This one is simple: Ask yourself throughout the day, “What can I do to make her day better?”—and then just do that. Whatever you plan or whatever you purchase for her, make sure that youʼre doing it because itʼs something she loves. Families large and small all around the world are dealing with the prospect of being separated from their loved ones for an extended period of time right now. Whether your mom lives down the street or across the country, here are a few ideas for celebrating when we can be together. Write her a letter. Seems simple, right? But honestly, when was the last time you wrote your mama a letter? Not a card where you just signed your name, but a letter where you had to write about your thoughts and feelings. While youʼre at it, have the kids draw her a picture and send it along, too. Make a meal together. If you both love to bake or cook, this is something you can easily plan virtually. Browse through online recipes together until you find something youʼd both love to make and then set up a Zoom or Facetime call. Make sure you can

spend an hour or two with her without interruptions from the kids. Order a customized photo puzzle. Does your mom love putting together puzzles? Sheʼll be surprised when this one turns out to be a picture of the kids or of you and her on your last mother-daughter trip. Sites like shutterfly.com and collage.com let you upload your own photo. You can even choose the size and number of pieces you prefer. Drop off a treat. If your mom lives nearby, order her favorite meal or purchase a special present and drop it off safely on her doorstep. Call her to let her know itʼs waiting for her outside. If she lives in an assisted living facility or nursing home, call to find out if you can drop something off for her. Organize a personal Motherʼs Day parade. Are you one of several siblings? Does your mom and siblings live nearby. If so, you should definitely plan a mini Motherʼs Day parade. Select a time when everyone is available and ask her to come outside. Then you, your siblings and the grandkids can drive by while playing fun music, waving and holding up signs. Itʼs guaranteed to put a smile on her face. Just chat. Itʼs so simple, but most moms just want to hear from you. If you live many miles from each other, carve out an hour when you can chat on the phone. If she lives nearby, drive over and sit on her porch while she stays inside and talk through the screen door. CLEAN THE HOUSE

Take a look around your living room. Are the photos in your frames up to date? Chances are they are not. Nowʼs the time to look through your phone and get those photos uploaded to a cloud service. While youʼre at it, delete all the blurry and duplicate photos to make more room on your phone. Make it easy on yourself and group the photos by month and year for easy access in the future. Choose a few favorites to either print from home or upload to a drugstore or store like Walmart for quick processing.

Although your motivation level may be at an all-time low right now, thereʼs no time like the present to get organized. Tackle a neglected closet or junk drawer, and start throwing stuff away! Do you really need 31 pens? As youʼre cleaning, think ahead. Get stuff together for an upcoming yard sale, or create a donation box to take to your favorite charity in the coming weeks. Or, you could take on a bigger house project. Clean the grout, pressure wash the driveway, paint the living room. The options are endless.

GO FOR A DRIVE

You are allowed to leave the house. Take a morning or evening drive to the forest and explore some of the backroads. The scenery is enjoyable, and the conversation even better. If youʼre patient and go at just the right time, you may encounter some local wildlife.

HAVE A FAMILY GAME NIGHT

We know for a fact you have games in the closet that you havenʼt played in years. What are you waiting for? Implementing a once-a-week family game night is a great way to get the family together, especially in times of social distancing. You can stick with the classics like Connect 4 or Clue or opt to order a new game or two from the Internet. If youʼre looking for suggestions, check out the Amazon Best Sellers list of Best Board Games. With 100 listed, youʼre sure to find a winner. Family card games like Uno and SkipBo are always hugely popular and for good reason— theyʼre easy to learn and quick to play. Another favorite is Guesstures. Itʼs like a fast-paced game of charades for the whole fam.

PLANT A GARDEN

It seems like this is the thing to do nowadays! The COVID-19 crisis has sparked a new interest in backyard gardening, and itʼs time you jumped on board. Whether youʼre opting for an in-ground garden or a raised bed, gardening has many pros, including stress relief and the obvious, fresh fruit and veggies. Hardware stores are open, so you may need to make a quick run for supplies. A raised bed can be made from wood, cinder blocks or even oversized tubs and pots. Also, invest in a truckload of quality topsoil from a landscaping company to give your seeds a fighting chance! A quick Google search reveals what to plant this time of year in Central Florida. Maybe sweet potatoes or Southern peas? There are also plenty of gardening apps that enable you to keep track of plants, sprouts and harvest times. Our favorite is Seed to Spoon. If youʼve never grown a garden, no worries. Start small, water daily and watch it grow.

CHALK YOUR SIDEWALK

Have you seen the sensory walks people are creating on social media? Pretty cool! With many businesses closed and events being canceled, more people are venturing outside and exploring their neighborhoods through bike rides, walks and more. Next time you head to the grocery store, pick up some sidewalk chalk if you donʼt already have it and make a sensory walk for your neighbors to enjoy. Maybe start with hopscotch and add in a few twists and turns. Add directions for fun. Jump three times, spin two circles. We give you permission to do a quick Google search to find suggestions for creating your own walk. If a walk just isnʼt for you, why not leave some inspirational messages or pictures for your neighbors on their nightly walks? Put that chalk to good use and put a smile on your neighborʼs face. Win-win.

SOUTHEAST OCALA 1 Ocala National Forest Sign To start your journey, take a drive out to the Ocala National Forest. While not technically in Ocala, the Ocala National Forest is an important component to our community. At 387,000 acres, it is the southernmost forest in the continental United States, protects the worldʼs largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest and is rich in water resources. Headquarters of the Ocala National Forest, the Lake George Ranger District office is located along SR 40 just east of Forest Corners and west of Mill Dam.

2 Silver Springs Entrance Sign A major tourist attraction since the 1820s when visitors made their way along the Silver River, Silver Springs now is a naturelovers paradise and is home to one of Americaʼs largest springs. The main spring is surrounded by serene gardens and historic structures, and Silver Riverʼs glass bottom boat tours have been world famous for more than 100 years. In the 1930s and over the years, scenes from at least 20 movies were filmed at Silver

Commissioners and the City of Ocala, the Ocala-Marion County Veterans Memorial Park opened in 1997. With more than 5,000 bricks, 200 benches and 100 plaques, visitors can learn and appreciate the history of our veterans from the birth of our nation forward. While there, check out the Medal of Honor monument dedicated to U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Hammett Bowen, Jr. with the large bald eagle on the top. Ocalaʼs Hammett Bowen, Jr. Elementary School was named after the Medal of Honor recipient. 4 Mosaics at Marion County Public Library System The 16 mosaic art pieces that adorn the outside of the Marion County Public Library Systemʼs Ocala Headquarters building were commissioned by the Friends of the Ocala Public Library in partnership with the Marion

DOWNTOWN OCALA 5 Horse Fever Horses Youʼll find these painted horses all over our great county. The one pictured can be found in downtown Ocala. What began in 2000 with the founding of the Marion Cultural Alliance has grown into a well-known public art display. Another round of the artistic horses happened 10 years later and was sponsored by the Florida Thoroughbred Breedersʼ and Ownersʼ Association. The horse pictured here titled “Sky Dancing” by artist Linda Ballantine Brown. 6 Grace Episcopal Church Grace Episcopal Church was built in 1880 at a cost of $742.37. The congregation actually began in 1849, four years after Florida became a state, with six families who met in private homes. The wood-frame church is built using Carpenter Gothic-style architecture. In 1905, the church was disassembled and moved five blocks to its current location on East Broadway Street. 7 Ocala Fire Bell On Thanksgiving Day of 1883, a fire burnt most of downtown Ocala, and when the city was rebuilt, many of the new buildings were made of brick rather than wood, leading to Ocalaʼs nickname, “The Brick City.” The inscription on the fire bell is dated 1889, and in 1894, a fire station made of brick was constructed. The 1,500-pound fire bell was hung from the fire station bell tower until the firehouse was destroyed in 1968. The bell was 26

returned to its original location in 2019, at Southeast Osceola Avenue between Broadway and Ft. King Street. 8 The Marion Block Building This building was constructed in 1885 after the Thanksgiving Day fire and originally housed the first opera house in the county, Marion Opera House, the countyʼs first mechanical elevator and the Court Pharmacy drugstore. In fact, the word “Drug Co” still appears in the mosaic tile at the entrance of the building. Today the building contains offices on the second and third floors and Harryʼs Seafood Bar and Grille on the first. 9 Curbside Gallery at MCA Artists throughout our community have been hard at work during this time of social distancing, and although the Marion Cultural Alliance is temporarily closed, theyʼre still supporting artists however possible. The Art of Social Distancing is a curbside exhibit at MCAʼs Brick City Center for the Arts in downtown Ocala and features new art from local artists inspired by social distancing and the COVID-19 pandemic. The exhibit is currently featuring the art of MCA Artist Members EJ Nieves, Justin Alsedek and Larry Maxwell. 10 Old Ocala National Bank This building on the corner of East Silver Springs Boulevard and North Magnolia Avenue once housed the Ocala National Bank. Built in 1911, the Neo-Classicalstyle building was the first granite building in Ocala and added a teller machine located on the sidewalk in the 1950s. The machine used a series of mirrors in the basement to allow the bank teller to see drive-up customers. 11 Public Art Mural This mural, titled “Natural Flow,”

was created by artist Eduardo Mendieta. It depicts the water cycle and agricultural products produced in Marion County, like watermelons, peanuts, tomatoes and blueberries. The mural wraps the downtown water tank near Osceola Middle School near the Ocala Downtown Market. 12 Eighth Street Elementary Eighth Street Elementary is the oldest continually operating school in Florida. This threestory, brick building was built in 1914 and still features many of the original details inside the building, including hardwood floors and high ceilings. The school served as Ocala High School for 10 years before it became Ocala Grammar School in 1925. In 1942, it was designated Ocala Junior High and was redesignated as Eighth Street Elementary in 1965. 13 Sculptures at Tuscawilla Park The sculptures of Tuscawilla Park are part of the Ocala Outdoor Sculpture Competition. The competition features artists from across North America. A selection jury, comprised of local community members, art organization representatives and artists, select 10 sculptures to advance in the competition and travel to Tuscawilla Park for a 22-month exhibit. The sculpture shown here is titled “Wings of the Phoenix” by artist Jenny Hager, professor of sculpture at the University of North Florida. 14 Ocala Union Station The building that once housed the Ocala Union Station was built in 1917 by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. It operated as a train station for a century and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The current building was renovated in 1998 and currently houses the nonprofit artist incubator Magnolia Art Xchange.

15 Tuscawilla Art Park On just the other side of Union Station, youʼll find the Tuscawilla Art Park, created as an inspiring space for artists and guests of all ages to enjoy. The park features plenty of outdoor public art, including the sculpture titled “Navigator” by Mike Hansel, “Reverie” by Sebastian Stoddart and “The Three Muses” by Hanna Jubran, among others.

NORTHWEST OCALA 16 Former Site Of Gerig Field Built in 1936, Gerig Field was named in honor of John Jacob Gerig, the then-mayor of Ocala, and is located at what is now the Martin Luther King, Jr., Recreation Complex. According to deadballbaseball.com, the Milwaukee Brewers were the first professional baseball team to host their spring training games at Gerig Field, from 1939-1941. The Tulsa Oilers (a Chicago Cubs affiliate) trained there in 1940 and 1941. Also in 1940 and 1941, the Ocala Yearlings played their home games at Gerig Field. In 1948, the Birmingham Barons, an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, began a 23-year affiliation between the Red Sox and Ocala. Baseball legends Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski played spring ball in west Ocala. 1972 marked the end of spring training in Ocala, and in 1993, the crumbling grandstands of Gerig Field were demolished, but the field remains to this day. The adjoining spring training practice field—known now as Pinkney Woodbury Field—remains at the site and is still contained by the original white limestone wall.

SOUTHWEST OCALA 17 Ocala City Gates On Southwest 1st Avenue youʼll find two large stone gates that were erected at the south entrance to the city in the 1930s. There were also gates at the northern entrance of the city on Magnolia

Avenue that were torn down. The City of Ocala and the Historic Ocala Preservation Society contributed to a restoration effort in 2008 to preserve the two remaining columns. 18 Ocala Drive-In The Ocala Drive-In, heading south on U.S. 411, has received some national press recently for being the only theater in the United States to show first-run films right now during the global pandemic. The Ocala Drive-In originally opened in 1948 but was closed in 2002. Current owner John Watzke purchased the outdoor theater in 2010 and has revamped the theater to include digital technology and a second screen. 19 Santos Trailhead Sign The Santos Trailhead and Campground is part of the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, one of the nationʼs largest incomplete public works projects—the abandoned Cross Florida Barge Canal. The Santos Trailhead has some of the best mountain biking trails in the Southeast and more than 60 miles of equestrian trails. When these public spaces open back up to visitors, travel just up the road to the green space behind the Marion County Sheriff ʼs Office substation and explore “The Island,” where you can learn about the barge canal project and even see one of the large pillars that was constructed before the project was abandoned. 20 Ocala Stud The Ocala Stud Thoroughbred Farm in Southwest Ocala near Trinity Catholic High School sold its first 2-year-old horses in 1958. Over the years, this family business and Ocala tradition has bred and sold more than 155 stakes winners. While searching for the Ocala Stud sign, continue south down Southwest 27th Avenue and drive through some of Ocalaʼs most beautiful horse farms. MAY ‘20

This refreshing, creamy treat is a must when visiting Disneyʼs Polynesian Resort or Magic Kingdom any time of year, but especially during the hot summer months. Now you can recreate this tasty treat with just three simple ingredients. You may not have the soft-serve machine at home to get that famous swirl look, but the taste will be just as sweet.

DOUBLETREE SIGNATURE COOKIE Makes 26 cookies

DOLE WHIP

1⁄2 pound butter, softened (2 sticks) 3⁄4 cup + 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 3⁄4 cup packed light brown sugar 2 large eggs 1 1⁄4 teaspoons vanilla extract 1⁄4 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 1⁄4 cups flour

1⁄2 cup rolled oats 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt Pinch cinnamon 2 2⁄3 cups Nestle Tollhouse semi-sweet chocolate chips • 1 3⁄4 cups chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 300°F. Cream butter, sugar and brown sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes. Add eggs, vanilla and lemon juice, blending with mixer on low speed for 30 seconds, then medium speed for about 2 minutes, or until light and fluffy, scraping down bowl. With mixer on low speed, add flour, oats, baking soda, salt and cinnamon, blending for about 45 seconds. Donʼt overmix. Remove bowl from mixer, and stir in chocolate chips and walnuts. Portion dough with a scoop (about 3 tablespoons) onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper about 2 inches apart. Bake for 20 to 23 minutes, or until edges are golden brown and center is still soft. Remove from oven and cool on baking sheet for about 1 hour.

Makes one serving

• One large scoop of vanilla ice cream • 4 ounces pineapple juice • 2 cups frozen pineapple Combine ingredients in a blender until smooth, and serve. If you have a piping bag (or parchment paper or a Ziploc bag), use that with a star-shaped tip to create the signature swirl.

These beyond-the-basics coffee recipes are tasty and will make you feel like youʼve just hit up your favorite coffee spot.

This coffee drink couldnʼt get any more decadent if it tried. Trust us, this is destined to become your new favorite. And donʼt forget to add the caramel syrup, you wonʼt regret it. • • • • •

Coffee (cold brew) Heavy whipping cream in small mason jar with lid Sea salt Caramel syrup (see recipe below) Protein shake whisk ball

To make cold brew coffee, dump coffee grounds in a container; add water. Leave in refrigerator overnight, and filter coffee from grounds in the morning. Or just use cold coffee, if thatʼs what you have. In the morning, put ice in a glass, and add caramel syrup over the ice to taste. Add cold brew coffee to ice and syrup. Put shaker ball in mason jar with 1/4 to 1/3 cup of whipped cream, depending on how much you prefer. Add the lid, and shake 20-30 times until foam forms. Pour foam into cup with coffee. Sprinkle sea salt on top.

CARAMEL COFFEE SYRUP

1 cup granulated sugar 3⁄4 cup water divided 1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract 1⁄8 teaspoon kosher salt

In a small saucepan, add sugar and 1/4 cup of water. Dissolve sugar over medium-low heat until completely dissolved. Turn heat up, and bring to a slow boil while continuously stirring. Heat until mixture turns a caramel color. Once the mixture has turned to a caramel color (about 3 minutes of slow boil), remove from heat and carefully add remaining 1/2 cup of water. Be careful during this step, as the syrup will steam and spatter. Continue to stir mixture until all crystallized syrup has fully dissolved. Stir in vanilla and kosher salt. Allow to cool slightly. Using a funnel (or a very steady hand), pour caramel syrup into a glass storage container. Cool fully before using. Caramel coffee syrup will keep in the refrigerator for several months.

DALGONA WHIPPED COFFEE OR CLOUD COFFEE This coffee concoction first became trendy on the social media platform TikTok, and there are several names for it, depending on whoʼs making it. Thereʼs one thing for certain, though, it tastes as dreamy as it looks. You can make either a hot or iced drink. We made the cold version, as pictured here. Check out the recipe below. • • • •

2 tablespoons instant coffee 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons hot water Milk of choice

Combine coffee, sugar and hot water. Whisk/blend. You know youʼve whipped it enough when it forms stiff peaks (like a meringue). Add ice (for cold variety) and milk in a glass. Spoon coffee mixture over top of ice. Drink as is, or if using a straw, you can stir to combine.
