Enjoy an evening of live music and spectacular fireworks presented by WUFT-TV, WUFTFM and WUFT Classic. The event will take place at the University of Florida Bandshell at Flavet Field, located at 605 Woodlawn Drive in Gainesville, from 6-10pm. Live entertainment includes Bears and Lions, Jason Hedges with Arts In Medicine Musicians, Savants of Soul, Gainesville Community Band and the Gainesville “POPS” under the direction of Gary Langford. The fireworks will begin at approximately 9:40pm. During the event, LifeSouth Blood Center will conduct a blood drive, water and Pepsi products will be available for purchase, and food trucks will be on-site. Learn more at wuft.org/fireworks.

Sholom Park, located at 7110 SW 80th Avenue in Ocala, is hosting a three-part summer Lil’ L.E.A.F. Series to Learn, Explore, Appreciate and Focus on topics relating to the great outdoors. The first part of the series took place in June, and the July event is titled Sprouts & Sprigs, Gardening for Kids. Kids will learn all about gardening while interacting with University of Florida Master Gardeners. The final event takes place on August 5 and is titled Create & Cultivate with Art in the Park. The programs begin at 10am, and attendance will be limited, so advanced registration is suggested. Advanced registration is $3, but you can register at check-in for $5. Celebrate Independence Day with a four-mile run through SE Ocala, starting and ending at Veterans Memorial Park on a course that winds through a quiet, tree-shaded residential neighborhood. Proceeds from this event benefit the Ocala-Marion County Veterans Memorial Park and the We Can Weekend program. Parking is available in the Ocala Public Library parking lot adjacent to Veterans Park. Goodie bags will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis, and runners will receive an American flag just before the finish line. The four-mile run/walk starts at 7:30am, the one-mile run/walk starts at 7:35am and the awards ceremony begins at 8:45am. Learn more and register at runsignup.com/races.

The Couch Sessions series pairs musicians and artists together in unique locations throughout downtown Ocala. This four-part series, which began in June, focuses on a fusion of music and art with live music and painting. The July event features musician Charity Cox and artist Justin Alsedek and will take place at NOMA Gallery from 8-10pm. Arrive between 7-8pm to take advantage of the behind-the-scenes sit-ins and interviews. All shows are BYOB and BYOF, except in September when the event is at The Loft. The Florida Museum of Natural History is hosting several Family Discovery Camps throughout the month. Explore the natural world with scientists and museum staff at this outdoor experience for the whole family. Topics for the four weeks are water, birds, insects, and mushrooms and fungi. These two-hour sessions are designed for children finishing grades kindergarten through sixth. Camps explore the outdoors through the University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Laboratory, so wear appropriate footwear and clothing. Registration is required and will close the Thursday before each camp session. $12 for non-members and $10 for members. Learn more at floridamuseum.ufl.edu/kids/summer-camps.
Join the Humane Society of Marion County for the All American Cornhole Tournament from 11am-4pm at the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion. Take part in this summer backyard sport while raising money to help animals in the care of the HSMC. Teams of two are invited to register for $40. Registration can be completed by email prior to the event or at 11am the day of the event. Boards and supplies will be on-site for participants, and the tournament will be set up in heats with double elimination rules in play. Vendors, food, a 50/50 raffle and more will also be available. ART IN THE ATTIC // JULY 16-24 Marion Cultural Alliance will host its annual Art in the Attic yART Sale this month during gallery hours at the Brick City Center for the Arts. The event is a fundraising event for MCA that features previously enjoyed art at yard sale prices. Hundreds of works will be for sale, including paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, and all will be sold at affordable prices. Donations will be accepted through July 10. Get first dibs on all the treasures on July 16 from 5-7pm during the VIP Sip & Shop reception. This ticketed event gives a first-look, first-buy opportunity for art enthusiasts. VIP guests will also enjoy a Pop-Up Artists’ Market where some MCA artists members will sell their old art pieces at great prices, as well as the soulful sounds of Becky Sinn. Tickets are $20 for MCA members or $25 for non-members in advance or $25 at the door. The event is then open to the public on July 17. 18TH ANNUAL BACK 2 SCHOOL BASH // JULY 31 The 18th annual Back 2 School Bash will be held from 10am-1pm at the Friends Recycling Center, located at 2350 NW 27th Avenue in Ocala. Hosted by the Marion County Children’s Alliance, Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida, Inc., the City of Ocala and the Marion County Public School System, this drive-through only event provides backpacks filled with school supplies and a free lunch for all adult and child attendees (while supplies last). Children must be in the car to receive a backpack, participants cannot get out of their cars and no walk-ups are allowed. him.” Today, Drew follows Bret’s lead and incorporates story telling into his own matches. “I think about the story from the beginning,” he says. Drew McIntyre “Just like any good story, it needs a strong beginning, middle and finish. It’s all about keeping the audience entertained.” Drew may be at the top of his game now, but the journey hasn’t always been easy. “After I was signed to WWE, I was there for
eight years and then I got fired,” he says. “I had to take the mirror test. I wasn’t giving it my all.” With the help of his then girlfriend (now wife), Drew set out to improve his lifestyle and make his way back. “We had to come up with a game plan,” he says, “a plan of action to re-build my brand. We used social media to take fans along on my wrestling adventures outside of the WWE.” It took a lot of dedication, hard work and the support of his wife, but Drew gradually built his following and cut out the negative aspects of his life, becoming one of the most popular wrestlers of his time. While touring, a life-altering accident took place resulting

rew McIntyre (born Andrew McLean Galloway IV) knew from a young age that he would become a WWE Superstar. “My dad reminds me of a day I sat the family down and said, ‘Oh, by the way, I’m going to be a WWE Superstar.’ Of course, they said, ‘OK, Son,’ not thinking much of it. Some say I want to be an astronaut or I want to ride a T-rex, but I never deviated from my plan.” Some 20 years later Drew is one of the most popular wrestlers in the industry. Growing up, he idolized wrestler Bret the Hitman Hart. “While my friends really liked the largerthan-life names like Hulk Hogan or the Ultimate Warrior, I loved to watch Bret. And I couldn’t really articulate why until I was older. I came to realize that as a child I loved story time, and Bret told great, compelling stories with his matches. I would plop myself down in front of the TV and be enamored by

in Drew’s neck being broken. The injury made him slow down while healing and focus on himself and his family. “It was a three-year journey, but I eventually made my way back to the WWE,” Drew says. “If you look in the mirror and can honestly say that you left no stone unturned and say you gave it your all, then you can literally do anything in life. I am living proof of that.” Drew, who recently turned 36 and also has a degree in criminology, celebrated his first WWE Championship at Wrestlemania 36 against Brock Lesnar in March 2020. His signature Claymore Kick ending the match. “The Claymore finishing move was created
by accident,” Drew mentions as a sidenote. His original persona included tight, leather pants and a fake ‘80s rock band, like Bill & Ted’s. “I was running to make a move and raised my leg to kick,” he recalls. “I realized that the pants were too tight and they would split right down the crotch. To prevent being embarrassed in front of millions, I kicked both legs out at the last minute. I knocked myself silly the first time, but that’s how the move came to be.” Amid the COVID pandemic, there were no fans in the building during Drew’s victory at last year’s WrestleMania. It may not have been the winning moment he pictured as a
child, but the win was exciting and special just the same. “The event was televised on WWE Network, and I remember looking at the numbers later,” he says. “Some 14 million unique social media interactions over two days. When other sports were shutting down, the WWE continued to produce original content as an escape for our fans.” And although they couldn’t attend in person, they were there in spirit. Now, Drew and his fellow WWE Superstars are excited to welcome fans back in person, and for the first time in three years, they’ll be making a return to Gainesville, Florida. “It’s going to be electric,” Drew says. “WWE is a product and a show for the whole family, not just the men. It’s very interactive, and attend one show and you’ll be hooked. You’ll see all the WWE Superstars, and we’ll give you all we’ve got. We are very excited to see the fans in person again.” Joining Drew in the ring will be other Raw and Smackdown Superstars, including WWE Champion Bobby Lashley, Seth Rollins, The New Day, Universal Champion Roman Reigns, Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, RAW Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley and Smackdown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair (card subject to change). he Magnolia Art Xchange was recently transformed for the opening reception of an exhibition entitled Native Aliens. The show highlighted the talents of local artists, including Drake Arnold, Jordan Shapot, Teddy Sykes, Ryan Neumann, Manny Morales and Aaron Thomas. The night featured an array of colorful pieces from the artists and a few surprises along the way. The show was a presentation of art inspired and influenced by cultures from all over the world. The Tipsy Skipper created a special drink for the evening, while the Mexi-Rican food truck offered up some great bites for attendees. If you missed out, don’t worry! Native Aliens was the first among many art exhibitions and events Ocala has slated for the summer months. Stay tuned for more!

ood manners, proper etiquette and pretty fashion were all on display at the Interfaith Ladies High Tea. Originally scheduled to take place in the lovely garden at Sholom Park, the Hilton’s own Rich Larkin came to the rescue on a rainy day with the Hilton’s ballroom beautifully decorated for the fancy affair. Organizer Karla Phillips Grimsley observes, “I love this community. I think Ocala puts the ‘unity’ in community.” The Interfaith Ladies High Tea is an authentic tea party hosted by women who set a table for tea, invite guests and raise donations. Those who attend hear inspiring testimonies from women who have overcome homelessness with the support of the Interfaith shelter program. Tables range from simply elegant to lavish decorations with themes. This year, one “Under the Sea” was quite spectacular. The hostess was Maria Conny Roman. Each dollar raised serves as a “vote” for the table to win the coveted “Golden Teapot” traveling award. Past winners include Toby Fernandez and Evelyn Nussel. This year’s winner was Jessica Davis. Every year the tables have been beautiful and truly make the event special. The recent event raised over $15,000. Interfaith Emergency Service provides emergency assistance to Marion County residents lacking basic needs, such as food, clothing, medications and shelter. Interfaith has been providing these services for 38 years with the generous support of the local community. Interfaith strives to serve their clients with lots of love and compassion. Interfaith alleviates suffering for many who are sick, mentally afflicted or just going through a temporary financial crisis. Their clients range from those who are enduring homelessness to those who are working yet struggling to make ends meet. Thanks to nearly 250 volunteers, Interfaith strives to keep operating overhead at 7 percent and apply 93 cents of every dollar to helping their clients. To make a donation, visit iesmarion.org. 14

History On A Hot Day

ocated just minutes outside of downtown Orlando, these springs boast scenic views that have been enjoyed for generations. Since its discovery in the 1860s, Wekiwa Springs has drawn visitors to enjoy Florida’s natural wonders. With a hotel and bathhouse complex established at the spring in the 1890s—more than 70 years before Walt Disney World opened—Wekiwa Springs was the first tourist attraction in Central Florida. Second magnitude springs like Wekiwa are classified as the second largest springs and release up to 64.6 million gallons of water per day. Wekiwa Springs gets its name from the Creeks, later called Seminoles, who were the most recent Native Americans to have lived there. Wekiwa means “spring of water” in the Creek language. “The history of this park is part of what makes it so special, and its roots can still be seen today,” says Alexandra Kuchta, press secretary for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. “Many visitors may not know that Wekiwa Springs State Park is home to Indian middens and shell mounds. These are essentially ancient mounds that often contain pottery fragments, shells, animal bones and artifacts.” Summer is a very popular time at Wekiwa Springs, as the water remains a constant, refreshing 72 degrees. And the park’s grassy slope next to the water makes for a perfect spot to picnic and relax outdoors. Swimmers are welcome in the Wekiwa spring head; however, swimming is not permitted in the spring run, the Wekiva River or Rock Springs Run. Snorkelers are also welcome, although scuba gear and any other tank-assisted or tethered hookah breathing are not permitted. “The family-friendly spring allows children of all ages to enjoy the fun, but young
swimmers should always be accompanied by an adult. There are no lifeguards on duty. Individuals who prefer to kick back and relax on the water are allowed individualsize flotation devices. Kayakers and paddlers can also navigate the springs system from several launch sites located both inside and outside of the park’s grounds, with rentals available on the premises.” While the clear waters at Wekiwa are a renowned attraction, the park also offers plenty of land-based recreational activities. There are several trails available, which range in length from 0.8 to 13.5 miles. Some of the trails are designated as multi-use, so visitors can enjoy them on foot, bicycle or horseback. When the sun sets and the park closes, campers are welcome to stay the night. The campground offers 60 spacious sites, and each has a water and electrical hook-up, a fire ring with a grill and a picnic table. Reservations should be made ahead of time. The historic park has attracted visitors since the 1800s and is set to attract even more after the new Serenity Garden is completed.
“The Serenity Garden is expected to offer a peaceful, welcoming retreat in which people of all ages and abilities can feel comfortable while enjoying unique experiences surrounded by nature,” says Alexandra. “Lushly landscaped with a regional palette of native plants, the garden will feature interactive and sensory elements, as well as enhanced opportunities for relaxation, exercise, social gathering, education and therapeutic programming. Wekiwa Springs’ Serenity Garden will be the first of its kind in any state or national park.” Wekiwa Springs is open daily from 8am until sundown; however, visitors are encouraged to arrive early, as the park often reaches capacity during the summer months. From sparkling springs to abundant nature, it is no surprise that Wekiwa Springs has been a Florida favorite for nearly 200 years. Bean Bags & BBQ Nothing says summer quite like tasty barbecue and a friendly game of cornhole. The Humane Society of Marion County’s upcoming All American Cornhole Tournament on July 11 brings these summer staples together in support of our furry friends.
T
he Humane Society of Marion County is a non-profit organization dedicated to the care and protection of animals in Marion County. Their mission has always been to prevent animal cruelty, suffering and overpopulation. But the center can’t achieve its goals without the constant support of animal lovers throughout the community. One of the best ways to do that, besides adopting a pet, according to HSMC Outreach Coordinator Austin Burnett, is to take part in the center’s events. After a yearlong COVID hiatus, they are excited to once again be bringing fun events back to the community. “One hundred percent of proceeds from our events goes back to the general care of the animals, including food, medication, veterinary costs, kennel fees and more,” Austin says. “These events help big time, and it’s very rewarding to know that you are taking part to make a difference in the animals’ lives.” This month’s cornhole tournament is

Everyone is invited—no experience necessary. “This type of event has been done by other rescues and has been successful, so we took off with the idea. We are hoping for a big success and to make it an annual event,” says Austin. There’s no need to be a cornhole aficionado to take part. From first-timers on up, the event is just about supporting the animals and having fun. Teams of two are invited to register for $40 per team, and registration can be completed by email prior to the event or at 11am the day of the event. Boards and supplies will be on-site for participants, and the tournament will be set up in heats with double elimination rules in play. In addition to the games, the event will include a variety of local vendors, food, a 50/50 drawing and more. Plus, for $10 a raffle ticket, you can purchase a chance to win a
stars and stripes cornhole board set to perfect your skills at home. Guests are encouraged to BYOB, and the cost to bring in a cooler is $10 per person. Cornhole winners will receive specially designed trophies plus gift cards from area businesses, and there will also be a jersey judging contest for the best team jerseys. Cost to enter is just $5 per team, and again all proceeds from the event go to support the animals. And speaking of the animals, several four-legged friends will be on hand for meet and greets. The Humane Society currently has 360 dogs and cats in its care, all of which are hoping to find their forever home. And the experience for the kids will be second to none. “Rotary Sportsplex will be transformed into a unique baseball venue,” says Matt. “The outfield fence will feature banners that resemble a brick wall from foul pole to foul pole. There will also be banners around the backstop and along part of the infield. These banners [will] make the players feel as if they are in a major league stadium. City-wide events will also take place before the kids even set foot on the fields. “The week begins on Saturday with the Babe Ruth Experience at the Circle Square Cultural Center,” says Corry. “This will be an opportunity for the players and coaches to walk through a
military men and women in attendance. The National Anthem will be performed by U.S. Navy Petty Officer Steven Powell who has performed at MLB, NFL and NASCAR events. Pool play will begin on Tuesday and the championship game [will be] on Saturday.” All games will be livestreamed on the Babe Ruth Network. “The line in the movie Field of Dreams that says, ‘The one constant through all the years has been baseball’ has never been more true than over the past 12 months,” says Matt. “While we have faced difficulties with the pandemic, the fact that we have been able to provide a constant in our boys’ lives that has given them some normalcy is very refreshing. t took a collaborative effort between the Marion County Tourist Development Council, the Marion County Board of County Commissioners, Marion County Parks and Recreation, the City of Ocala and the Rotary Sportsplex board to secure Ocala as the host of the upcoming 8u machine pitch Cal Ripken Rookie World Series. The sportsplex has hosted five World Series tournaments since 2010, and this particular tournament is scheduled to be played here in Ocala through at least 2024. “The tournament is expected to bring 10 to 15 teams, including coaches, parents and families from all different parts of the United States,” says Corry Locke, group sales supervisor for Ocala/Marion County. “We expect an estimated economic impact of $1.2 million to the community over the nine-day event. Visitors will be staying in hotels, eating at our restaurants and shopping at our stores. Not only is there a direct impact while the teams and families are in town for the event, but many of the visitors will be exposed to the area for the first time and inspire potential return trips for vacation.” As the host park, the Rotary Sportsplex will have an all-star team representing Marion County in the tournament. The Rotary Rookie Reds have been practicing for months in preparation for the tournament. “The boys have put in a lot of work on the practice field and in the batting cages. We have played in many warm-up tournaments to prepare for our participation in the World Series,” says Coach and Rotary Sportsplex Public Relations Manager Matt Fabian. “Our team has two goals every time we come together: have fun and get better every day. If we do those two things, we will have a successful summer, which should translate into a team of boys that will make Marion County proud in the World Series. “The World Series will showcase the best teams in the country,” adds Matt. “With the series taking place in August, the teams that make it to Ocala will have played baseball all summer long. And not only played, but played at a winning level throughout their state and regional tournaments to qualify for the World Series.”

a state with 825 miles of sandy coastline, narrowing down Florida’s best beaches is no easy feat. So instead of naming just one, we’ve laid out a few of our favorites. From beaches with a view and awesome fishing piers to the spots to visit for family fun, we have the best beaches for every situation—no mater what’s on your vacation to-do list. And remember, as long as your have sand between your toes, a shell in your pocket and friends by your side, any beach is the perfect beach.

navarre beach on locally caught Gulf seafood, sandwiches, burgers and more all while soaking in the amazing views. For other activities in the area, make sure to take a side trip to the Gulf Islands National Seashore, a beach park run by the National Park Service, and the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center. Just a few blocks from the pier, visitors can learn about sea turtles like Sweet Pea, the center’s resident green sea turtle that is unable to be released. Looking for somewhere to stay while in the area? From vacation rental homes or a beachfront condo to camping or luxury hotels, there are plenty of options for lodging in Navarre Beach. SEBASTIAN INLET STATE PARK If you’re looking for the perfect beach for fishing on the Atlantic Coast, definitely check out Sebastian Inlet State Park. Sebastian Inlet and the surrounding waters provide fantastic fishing for beach, river and inlet anglers. Impressive catches are often made from the two jetties where the Indian River extends into the Atlantic, making it a prime spot for snook, redfish, trout and tarpon.

BEST BEACH FOR FAMILY FUN: As adults the perfect beach vacation might consist of just two things: solitude and a sunny sky. When traveling with the kiddos, though, you might need a bit more to keep these busy bees entertained. Look no further than Clearwater Beach. Although a bit crowded for some, teenagers and younger tots will definitely never be bored. While still showcasing those white, sandy beaches and tranquil water that all beachgoers crave, this Gulf destination packs a serious punch in the things-to-do category. Start your beach day right in the heart of it all at Pier 60. This 1,080-foot fishing pier and recreational beach park features a bait house that also sells souvenirs, drinks and snacks; telescopes for checking out the horizon, covered pavilions for lunch out of the sun and one of the largest beach playgrounds on the

Ready to catch the big one? Most anglers agree that the best beach fishing happens not from the actual shore but by visiting a fishing pier. And there’s no pier that takes you farther out than the Navarre Beach pier. As the longest pier in Florida, at 1,545 feet long and towering 30 feet above the Gulf of Mexico, the Navarre Beach fishing pier has plenty to offer beachgoers who are looking to hook something tasty for dinner. Located between Pensacola Beach and Fort Walton Beach on the Gulf Coast, Navarre Beach boasts white sand and clear, emerald-colored water—so clear that anglers fishing from the pier can often see right down to the bottom— which means the whole family will enjoy their time at the beach, whether from the pier or on the shore. According to those in the know, a huge variety of fish can be caught from the pier, with types depending greatly on how far out you’re fishing from. If you stay near the beach, you might snag redfish, flounder, sheepshead and Spanish mackerel. Farther out, you could battle king mackerel, cobia or maybe even a great white shark—yes, one was caught and released here in 2019. Check out the pier’s Facebook page if you want to see what’s biting currently, and if you visit, see what was caught yesterday and today on the sign at the pier store. During the summer months, the pier is open for fishing and walking from 5am to 11pm, with lights scattered along the pier if you want to visit at night or early in the morning. Daily and weekly fishing passes are available and include a Florida fishing license. Adults are $7, seniors and active duty military are $6, kids 15 and under are $4 and kids 5 and under are free. If you just want to take a stroll down the pier, walking passes are just $1. If you didn’t visit the area with your fishing gear in tow, rod rentals and bait for purchase are available at the pier store. While you’re visiting, make sure to check out Windjammers on the Pier, where you can dine
clearwater beach Gulf. Some of the play structures are even covered, which is a huge plus for kiddos. From 6-10pm each night, you can catch Sunsets at Pier 60, a Clearwater Beach tradition with craft and street performers. The Pier 60 park also has shower stations; public restrooms; lifeguard towers; cabana, beach chair and umbrella rentals (if you get there early!); a huge inflatable waterslide and bungee trampoline right on the beach; and jet skis, kayaks and paddle boards for rent. When it’s time to get away from the sand, take a stroll along the Beach Walk—a winding, beachside promenade—for a little people watching, shopping and perhaps an ice cream cone. But if your stomach is really hungry, you’ll want to cross the street and visit Crabby’s Dockside for their famous Bairdi crab legs and the Crab Trap Bucket, a literal bucket filled with Cruzan Coconut, Mango, Passion Fruit and Pineapple Rums, blended with orange and pineapple juice with a splash of cranberry. Another awesome dining option right down the street is Frenchy’s, where you’ll definitely want to try the talked-about grouper sandwich. Ready to hit the water? You don’t want to leave Clearwater Beach without taking one of the boat cruises you’re sure to see. Trust us when we say that once the kids see the Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise boat out on the high seas, they’re going to want to partake. For the thrill seekers, book a ride on the Sea Screamer, billed as the world’s largest speedboat at 72 feet long and with speeds up to 35 miles per hour. Other fun outings include a visit to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and a ride around town on the Jolley Trolley. Sometimes, though, all you really want is a little peace and quiet. A beach day at a quieter
spot won’t hurt the kids too much, right? We suggest venturing up to North Clearwater Beach, where it’s quieter with less vacationers, or to Honeymoon Island State Park. You could even arrange a ferry out to Caladesi Island State Park, which is only accessible by boat—a true deserted island just north of Tampa! If you want to stay the night just a few steps from the action of Pier 60, you can’t get any closer than the Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa—it’s right next door. SANIBEL ISLAND Our No. 2 pick for best family-friendly beach is Sanibel Island. Near Fort Myers, the highlight of Sanibel is 100 percent the shell-packed beach. Because kids (and kids at heart) absolutely love all things treasure hunting, your family can spend hours combing the sand and come away with buckets of near-perfect shells of all kinds. Admittedly more low key and nature related, even the busiest of families will enjoy renting bikes and exploring the 25 miles of paved, carless trails, enrolling in Sanibel Sea School to learn more about marine conservation or visiting the BaileyMatthews National Shell Museum.
Rosemary Beach and six other stunningly beautiful towns. The beaches of 30A are all extraordinary with emerald water and crystalline sand, but they’re also certified Blue Wave Beaches, which means they adhere to, promote and embrace strict principles that protect the environmental aspects of the beach communities. Each community has its own aesthetics and unique characteristics. In fact, exploring the neighborhoods of 30A is almost as much of a draw as the beach itself. Here’s a bit of a rundown on what each community specializes in. Blue Mountain Beach is known for its turquoise waters and blue lupine flowers that bloom on the sand dunes. Grayton Beach is a creative haven for artists, chefs and musicians. In Watercolor you’ll notice the Florida-style homes and architecture. Seaside is the true iconic beach town, with pastel-colored houses scattered throughout. (Inside info: The movie The Truman Show starring Jim Carrey was filmed here, if that helps set the scene.) Dune Allen is a nature-lover’s paradise with miles of biking and hiking trails. This is also the closest town to Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, which is named for its dunes that soar over the beach like a ship’s sails. Here you’ll also find a rare coastal ecosystem—freshwater dune lakes—and 13 imperiled species that find refuge in the park, like the Choctawhatchee beach mouse and pitcher plants. At Watersound, winding boardwalks make their way through towering sand dunes, while in Rosemary Beach, one of the more popular 30A beach towns, you’ll find cobblestone streets and quaint neighborhoods. BEST BEACH FOR GREAT VIEWS: Of all the categories, great views is probably the most subjective. We consider a beach to have great views if it has clear water, sugary white sand and awesome panoramas of the sunset or sunrise. And we feel there are few places that check all these boxes quite the way the beaches of the Panhandle’s 30A do. What’s 30A? Florida’s Scenic Highway 30A departs U.S. 98 in Walton County and winds along the Gulf of Mexico for 18.5 miles through the beach communities of Grayton Beach, Watercolor, Seaside, Seagrove, Seacrest,

CAPE FLORIDA BILL BAGGS STATE PARK Off the coast of Miami with Biscayne Bay to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Cape Florida Bill Baggs State Park sits on the tip of this small barrier island. Because it’s a state park, you know you’ll be able to get away from the hustle and bustle of Miami while enjoying gorgeous, ultra-clear water. And this is definitely your spot if you want to watch the sun rise over the Atlantic. Named the “Cape of Florida” by explorer Ponce de Leon during the first Spanish expedition to Florida in 1513, make sure you check out the breathtaking views atop the historic 1825 Cape Florida Lighthouse. 28

best beach for solitude: ST. GEORGE ISLAND
Located on Florida’s Forgotten Coast in the Panhandle, this is as quiet of a beach town as you’ll find in Florida. It was also ranked the No. 4 beach in the United States by Dr. Beach in 2021. Plan to visit the state park on the island for some seriously amazing sugar-white beaches and book a rental home in the St. George Island Plantation for spectacular sunsets at the cut.

Known as the Shark Tooth Capital of the World, hunting for fossilized shark teeth while strolling the beach is a treasured pastime in this Sarasota County town.

CANNON BEACH AT JOHN PENNEKAMP CORAL REEF STATE PARK Although most visitors take a boat out to the reefs, there’s plenty to see right off the shore at Cannon Beach, including an early Spanish shipwreck about 100 feet off the beach.
best beach for historical value:
EGMONT KEY STATE PARK OR DRY TORTUGAS NATIONAL PARK This one was a toss-up. Egmont Key, located at the mouth of Tampa Bay, is accessible only by boat or ferry and features a lighthouse that has stood since 1858 as well as the remnants of Fort Dade, built in 1898
as the Spanish-American War threatened. Also only accessible by boat or seaplane, Dry Tortugas National Park is made up of a series of islands that sit 70 miles off of Key West. Once there you’ll learn about the enormous Fort Jefferson that sits alone out in the water and was built in 1845.
best beach for shelling: CAPTIVA ISLAND
Other than the aforementioned Sanibel Island, Captiva is a shell-hunters paradise. Located just beyond Sanibel, Capitva is lesser known, a bit farther to get to and also has fewer tourists. Pro tip: Head to Turner Beach as you enter Captiva Island. The best time to go is right after a storm when the shells are pushed up onto the beach by the waves.
best beach for surfing: NEW SMYRNA BEACH
Florida isn’t exactly known for its killer waves, but if you make your way to the Atlantic Coast during or after a big storm, you’re sure to find enough to satisfy. With some of the most consistent swells, New Smyrna Beach plays host to one of the American Professional Surfing Association’s premier contests each year.
best beach for horseback riding: HUTCHINSON ISLAND

all the amenities offered and find one that suits your family best. And then plan to spend a few days traveling the 30A highway checking out the other towns and making plans for your next visit. When making decisions about lodging, just know that renting a vacation home is probably the way to go here. These towns are known for their beach neighborhoods, green spaces and hidden paths that lead to the shore. Renting a home for your stay will allow you to really take in the unique qualities offered here. Seaside, Rosemary Beach, Watercolor and Alys Beach are all known for their beach town architecture, so check out rental home in these locations first. If you’re looking for a more traditional resort, though, with tons of amenities and pools, you’ll find those, too, as well as quaint inns and bed and breakfasts. No choice is the wrong choice here, especially if it’s on the beach where the angle of Florida’s Emerald Coast allows for great sunset views.

New Spot In Town Open since early May, The Juniper General Store has been a labor of love for wife-andhusband duo Meredith Richard and Travis Arenburg. // B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N

illed as part store, part coffee shop and beer/wine bar, the idea behind the store is one Meredith says they had talked about for years. “We travel as much as possible, and we have seen similar concepts in other parts of the country,” says Meredith. “When I was laid off from a job I had worked for 15 years, it kind of felt like the right time to get serious about our general store idea. We told our now partners, Polly Benson and Dick Olsen, about our idea, and they said that if we could ever make it a reality, they would like to be a part of it. So, we started looking for a space and began to fine tune our concept.” Residents of Northwest Ocala, Meredith knew that the store and bar combo would do well in that area. “It’s a combination of all the things this part of town is missing,” Meredith says. Unfortunately, when Covid hit, construction on the space was halted entirely. “We weren’t sure what the future held, so we left our space empty until we felt like we could move forward. We started building again in November.” The couple designed and built the store themselves, from every paint color and light fixture to every floor board laid and piece of trim painted. Meredith, who is a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design with a degree in architectural preservation, had been a kitchen and bath designer for 15 years. Her husband, Travis, has spent his entire adult life in the hospitality industry and beer and wine distribution, specifically craft beer. You’ll find him behind the bar, with an encyclopedic knowledge
of beer and song lyrics, Meredith says. The store offers a relaxed, welcoming vibe. Visitors can come in and stay for as long as they like. “We have outlets strategically placed so that it’s easy to find a spot to plug in your laptop, and we’re finishing up a conference room that is available to the public if they book ahead of time,” Meredith says. “As the day goes on and you’re ready to unwind, you can meet up with friends over a glass of beer.” In the store, you’ll find an array of local products, including handmade soaps, honey, leatherworks like purses, wallets and flasks, jewelry, ceramics, photos and prints, tumblers, cutting and serving boards, books, pillows, pet products, furniture pieces and clothing accessories. “Buying local has always been a priority for us personally, so it only made sense when we were opening our own store that we would try to fill it with as many local products as possible,” Meredith says. “Many of our artists are people we have purchased from before, or at the very least admired. We tell the story of our artists, and their work to everyone who comes into the store. We know each one of them personally, and
their success is our success.” Although the store doesn’t serve food, they do carry all sorts of pantry items like cured meats, locally made cheese, crackers, nuts, hot sauces, pickles, jams and jellies, and cookies, so it’s the perfect spot to get everything for your next charcuterie board. Aside from serving beer and wine, The Juniper General Store also offers beer and wine to go, and guests are welcome to order in food from the surrounding restaurants or bring food in. The store is planning to offer classes, such as sip and paint workshops, in the conference room in the future, as well as trunk shows and holiday shopping events for their vendors. Beer and wine tastings are also in the works. “We look forward to becoming a destination in Ocala and beyond,” Meredith says. “There isn’t anything that’s not exciting about owning your own store. We get to hand curate every item and create a culture in our space that we find enjoyable. We are passionate about every nook and cranny, because it’s ours.
