Christmas Prime Stock Show & Sales NWA Lancaster - Monday 7th December The annual Christmas prime stock show at North West Auctions was held on Monday 7th December 2015 for Lambs and Beef. The pre-sale show of prime lambs had a strong entry in the four classes and thanks must go to the vendors for the effort especially in this dreadful weather. The job of judging was in the very capable hands of Mr David Findlay of Leyburn. The champion rosette was awarded to Andrew Foy of Conder Green with his pen of five Beltex lambs with the reserve champion pen being awarded to Richard Prickett of Hutton Roof. The Christmas show of prime beef had an entry of seven clean prime cattle and three prime bulls in a sale in which easily twice as many could have been sold. Some good quality clean cattle forward for judge Ross Towers of Wray who awarded the champion to a British Blue steer from Barbara Rayton of Winston who also was awarded the reserve champion with a heifer. NWA J36 The annual Christmas show of prime lambs saw 32 pens of 5 forward in 6 show classes. The show was kindly judged by Mr Ian Brown from Browns Butchers, Lindal in Furness who awarded the championship rosette and the Jack Ireton Perpetual Trophy to JG & PH Thompson, Poppy Farm showing a pen of 5 pure Beltex lambs weighing 43.2kg and later selling for a sale topping price of £135 (300p/kg) purchased by Mr A Dawson on behalf of Higginsons Butchers, Grange over Sands.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 4th December The current market trends show that the Store Cattle trade is slightly on the decline nationwide. The trade remains ok at Lancaster especially taken in consideration the cattle forward today with many consignments of better cattle holding off for next week’s Christmas show. The trade for black and white bullocks saw good types and well fleshed bullocks good too sell along with young ones a good trade but plain lean types with steers topping at £1040 from A & E Clarkson of Cock Hall. The trade topped at £1260 for a Limousin bullock from EC & A Shuttleworth of Ulverston with Angus steers from the same home.

A good entry of 90 Cast Cows forward this week at Lancaster but like other market centres a depressed trade for cast cows and OTM cattle. The current poor export trade a few meat wholesalers not bothering buying cast cows at the moment. A poor show in terms of quality with many parlour and lean cows forward this week. Black and white cows topped at 111.5ppk with many black and white struggling to get 100ppk with a lean entry of cattle averaging 68ppk. Good beef cows sold between 108-112ppk. Cast heifers and steers sold between 145 and 170ppk demanding on the quality and the finish of the cattle

A smaller show of Calves this morning in anticipation of the Christmas show next Friday, 4th December. Beef calves sold to a top of £365 for an 8 week old Blue Bull from JB & JB Lawson, Cockerham. Native bred calves sold to £325 from TD & V Whitaker, Winmarleigh with an Angus Bull. Friesian calf trade remains similar with the best sorts achieving in advance of £100, topping at £128. Nice rearing calves £50-£75 with younger sorts a shade easier. Overall average of £64 for Black and Whites, a fraction dearer than other local centres.

A small entry of medium keep Store Lambs sold to a strong trade with plenty more could have easily been sold with an active ring full of buyers looking to purchase lambs. Texel lambs sold to £59 from PG Thornton of Clifton Farm with Suffolk’s from the same home selling to £58.50. An overall market average of £56.
Monday 8th December The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a larger entry then expected considering the dreadful weather with 930 forward. An overall market average of 156ppk with SQQ lambs averaging 159ppk with over 400 of the lambs forward being horned and mules. Topping the sale was the Champion pen of lambs a pen of five Beltex from Andrew Foy of Conder Green selling to £112 or 260ppk. Pens of Beltex lambs sold in excess of 200ppk with all Beltex lambs forward averaging 187ppk. Commercial continental bred lambs sold £27 to £30 over there weight. The trade for mule lambs not quite as strong as seen over previous weeks with Mules topping at £73 and Mashams to £74 both from FK & F Woodhouse of Fell End Farm. Mules sold to an average of £67.57 with Mashams averaging £71. Horned lambs sold to a top of £71.50 from D France of Isle of Skye for a pen of Dalesbreds with lambs weighing mid-forties with other horned lambs same weight selling between £68 and £70.

A better trade for Cast Sheep this morning, topping at £101 for a Texel Ewe from ST Birkett, Hall Croft Barn. Mule ewes to £61 from GR Bargh & Co, Caton. Hill bred sheep to £50 for swales from the same home. Overall average of £52 for all sheep forward.

A strong trade for the Prime Cattle forward especially with the current beef prices being in decline. Prime bulls sold to a top of 199.5ppk for a Charolais from JS & Km Wilson of High House. The prime steers sold to a top price of 324.5ppk for the Champion from Barbara Rayton of Winston a British blue weighing 456kg with other steers selling in excess of 200ppk averaging 237ppk. Heifers sold to 259.5ppk for the reserve champion from Barbara Rayton of Winston with all heifer forward selling to a market average of 238ppk.

Best pens of short keep Continental lambs selling £57 - £65 topping at £68 for Texel x from DR & C Galbraith, Sunny Bank and others £67 FW Park, Bannerigg Farm. Medium keep lambs generally achieving £50 - £55 with smaller types £42 - £49. Very smallest lambs between £28 - £37. Mules sold to £62 for best sorts with other pens of well grown lambs just needing the final finish £57 - £61. Longer keep sorts £47 - £54 with a pen of Herdwick mules £58. Mashams sold to £54 from W & J Penny, Marsh Grange Farm. Hill lambs sold to £45.50 for Rough Fells from BJ Bainbridge, Steps Farm followed Swales at £41.50 from JA Alderson, Barras Farm. Herdwicks achieved £39 PM Simpson, Poole Bank. Ram lambs today were all hill bred types and generally medium to long keep sorts generally selling £32 - £40 depending on breed with Continentals mid £40’s.

A small entry of Calves forward this week with many vendors holding their calves back for the Christmas show next week. The trade continued to be as strong for the entry forward mainly made up of young calves. An eighteen day British Blue sold to £300 from DW Cottam of Hagg Farm.

J36 Rural Auction Centre Judging at 5pm Sale at 6pm Show Classes Champion Turkey Champion Goose Tuesday 8th December CHRISTMAS CHAMPIONS SELL AT £135 (300P/KG) AT NWA J36 NWA held its weekly sale of Prime Lambs on Tuesday 8th December which included the Christmas Prize show for Prime Lambs. Despite the horrendous weather over the weekend and entry of 2233 was forward and vendors must be complimented on presenting their lambs is such good condition with all things considered. Prime lambs sold to an overall market average of 157p/kg with well finished lambs easiest sold generally 160p/kg – 175p/kg. Lambs lacking finish and non-assured harder to sell with plenty of these on the market nationally. Non show lambs sold to 185p/kg for ¾ Beltex lambs from JG & PH Thompson, Poppy Farm followed by TH & D Cornthwaite selling a ring full of Texels at 177p/kg. Mules sold to 158p/kg and averaged 145p/kg with other pure hill breeds selling to 166p/kg for Cheviots, 158p/kg for Swaledales, 155p/kg Rough Fells and Herdwicks 156p/kg. A top price of £80.50 was achieved by AW & AM Clarke selling Texel x Lambs with best of a run of Suffolks from P & SA Edmondson selling to £79. Mules sold to £71 from F & SA Edmondson and pure hill lambs £67.50 Cheviots, £66 Rough Fells and £63 Swaledales. Standard lambs 42kg – 45kg generally achieving £22 - £28 over weight dependant on breed with well-bred continental lambs a few pounds more. Light weight lambs sold to £56.50 with others £55, £54 and also topping at 155p/kg. Heavy lambs generally selling in the low to mid £70’s, we would advise vendors that lambs are not wanted over fat or over heavy (50kg +).

An entry of over four hundred Cast Sheep were forward with a very mixed entry of all types of sheep. Cast rams sold to a top of £121 for a Texel tup from David Prickett of Farleton House. Better types of ewes sold to around the ninety pound mark topping at £92 from RT & ME Sutton of Crosscrake Farm. A plain entry of Mule ewes sold to £63 from G Wilson of Larkrigg with bigger ewes still achieving £60. Best types of Swaledale ewes selling over £50 topping at £54 from JA Bennett of Middle Farm with all Swaledale ewes averaging £36 with leaner Swaledale harder to sell this week. Cheviot ewes sold to £87 from J Allonby & Son of Green Head Farm.
