NWA J36 Show & Sale of Fell Ponies On behalf of the Fell Pony Society Saturday 29th October North West Auctions held the annual Fell Pony sale, in association with the Fell Pony Society, on Saturday 29th October 2016.The sale continues to draw a huge crowd, with the sale ring packed to the rafters from start to finish with people travelling from throughout the UK to be present at the Sale. The pre-sale show was judged by Mrs Ruth Eastwood, who had strong impressive line ups of Fell Ponies to cast her eye over, credit must go to all breeders for the high standard of ponies on offer. The Championship rosette was awarded to a colt foal, lot 36 Lathomdale Stardust from MJ Woods of Bates Green Farm, Skelmersdale, selling for 1,200gns to Ringstone Stud of Devon. The reserve champion was awarded to lot 10 Brackenbank Gabriella from D Wilkinson of Appleby. The day’s trade topped at 1,600gns for lot 70, Greenholme Kate, from RJ & BK Potter of the Greenholme Stud, Tebay, for a stylish filly foal that had attracted a lot of interest. The production sale from WS Potter, also of the Greenholme Stud had created a lot of attention, with many people interested in investing in the renowned blood lines. Their consignment sold to a top of 1,150gns for lot 66 Greenholme Keepsake, a filly foal that was bred from a Murthwaite mare carrying old Murthwaite bloodlines. A strong trade throughout the sale meant vendors left feeling well satisfied and it is wonderful to have the auction so full with such a superb atmosphere. The registered Mountain and Moorland Ponies saw a Palomino Colt top at £820 from C Taylor of Eden Lodge farm, Hamsterley, for Lot 115 Hillgarth Kings Reflection a Welsh Section D. Dales ponies sold to a top of £650 from C Morland of Coalbrookdale, Kirkby Stephen, for lot 105 Morlandsdale Major, a colt foal. There was plenty of interest created in the Shetlands with two miniature Piebald Colt Shetlands from H Roberts of Bybeck, Tebay, selling to £300 and £260.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 28th October There was 227 Store Cattle forward this week at Lancaster. Despite 1 or 2 buyers missing, there was a strong ringside of bidders, with a large amount of vendors happy with their trade. Again, well fleshed cattle sold to an advantage. Topping the market today was a Hereford bullock at £1320 from JS Clark & son, Godson House Farm, with quite a lot of cattle over the £1200 mark. Topping the heifer trade was a pair of Angus Heifers at £1140 consigned from AJ & D Knowles, Windy Hill Farm. A strong show of 119 Cast Cows forward this week with all classes of cows a fraction dearer compared with previous weeks. Topping the trade was a cow from R&J Jenkinson, Holmes Farm, at 139.5 ppk or £976.5. 7 cast bulls forward as well this week selling to a top of 201.5ppk or £1331.92 for a lim from M&L Preece, High House Farm. Topping the Calf sale this morning was a Limousin Bull consigned by J Bargh & Son, North Farm, which realised £350. Heifers topped at £250 for a British Blue which was consigned by J Hoggarth & Sons of Manor House Farm. Calves met a good steady trade throughout the sale, British Blue and Continental types were keenly bid for, as were the well-bred stronger Black and Whites. The smaller Black and White Calves were harder to cash. It was our monthly special sale of Stirks today and there was a cracking entry put forward with a well-supported ringside of buyers. Topping the trade was a pen of Shot Horn/Aberdeen Angus Heifers consigned by J & DE Mitchell & Son, Snapewood Farm, realising £600. Steer Stirks sold to £605 for a pen of Mons which were consigned by JS Taylor, Farm Dale Road. In the Bull Stirk section, it was an Aberdeen Angus which peaked at £450 from Mason and Birkland Barrow of Over Kellet.
Monday 31st October A larger entry of Prime lambs forward selling to a Stronger Trade A larger entry of Prime Lambs forward this morning at Lancaster with over 1,000 being sold selling to an improved trade from previous week with a busy ringside of buyers all looking for lambs. The lamb trade topped at £97 and £95 or 206ppk and 202ppk from Andrew Foy of Parkside with a run of quality Beltex lambs that where eagerly bid for. Plenty of consignments of mule lambs in the market sold very well with mules regularly selling £30 above their weight. Nice to see a few consignments of horned lambs in the market with light weight Swaledale lambs weighing 35kg selling to £54. A pen of Texel Crosses realised £83, which were sold by A & J Rhodes, Low Kit Brow. Mule ewes peaked at £64 for a pen from A & J Rhodes, Low Kit Brow. J36 Sale Reports Second Show & Sale of Suckled Calves Thursday 27th October North West Auctions J36 had 38 Young Calves, 5 Stirks, 400 Suckled Calves and Store Cattle, 4 Breeding Cattle and 43 OTM Cattle forward for Sale on Thursday 27th October, which also included the second Show and Sale of Suckled Calves. The Second Autumn Show and Sale of Suckled Calves today, which saw a very good entry of well-bred cattle on offer. The pre-sale show was very kindly judged by Mr Mark Towers of Aldingham, where a fantastic show of cattle was put before with credit going to all vendors. The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize Suckled Heifer, a British Blue, from S Procter from Selside, which later went onto sell for £880, topping the heifer trade of the day. The reserve champion was awarded to lot 662, a British Blue Bullock, from GT Hodgson of Witherslack selling for £830. Calves met a steady trade throughout the day but sold to a very well supported ringside of buyers. Our averages for this sale would reflect our trade being in line with other markets. Topping the sale was an outstanding 5 month old Limousin Bullock consigned by N A & J Temple, Black Hall Farm, which also stood 2nd prize in his class, then realised £890 through the sale. Leading the Breeding Cattle sale today was a Baz Cow and a Stabilizer calf at foot, which realised £1080, consigned by R & E Rayson, Fairbank Farm, he also had a Baz Cow and a Saler calf at foot selling to £1050. Top price per kilo for OTM Cows today was a Baz scaling 577kg, realising 129.5p/kg, consigned by R & E Rayson, Fairbank Farm. It was a 775kg Shorthorn cow consigned by K Wrathall Ltd, Cockley Beck Farm, that peaked at £833.13. Steers topped at 89.5p or £851.15, for a 951kg Angus consigned by R J Holden, Syke House Farm. In the bull section it was a Blonde scaling 1007kg, which was consigned by R Keith, Granby Road and sold for £951.62 or 94.5p.

Top price per kilo for lambs was 206.7p for a pen of cracking Beltexs scaling 45kg and consigned by P & T L Edmundson Ltd, Low Hall Farm.

There was a very mixed show on offer today the nice shapely handy weight lambs met a sound trade of 180-190p, the smaller tidy types, 32-38kg sold from170-180p. Medium weight lambs, that had a good cover of meat, 45.5-51kg were selling from 185-195p. The heavier types 52kg plus were hitting the £90+ mark, for good quality lambs. There continues to be a good number of Cast Sheep coming forward with just shy of 700 forward this week. There was a leaner entry of ewes forward today, with well fleshed ewes easier to sell. Topping the trade for the ewes at £92 was a single Charollais, with a number of lots breaking the £80 mark.
