J36 InIn-Lamb Sale Saturday 27th January J36 Record Broken for Bluefaced Leicester Females The annual Rough Diamonds and Multi Breed individual female sale including Bluefaced Leicesters saw a large entry of sheep forward for sale with a busy ringside of buyers and on lookers. The annual Rough Diamonds sale of Rough Fell females on behalf of the Rough Fell Sheep Breeders Association saw an entry of 18 forward. The pre-sale show was ably judged by John Law, who we thank for his time and expertise. The pre-sale Championship was awarded to J Hunter of Galloper Park, Tebay with a one crop ewe sired by RF2604 Maryfell Walter, carrying a single to RF2563 Lockbank W3. This sharp coloured ewe was much admired in the sale pens and went on to sell for 700gns to S & W Dickinson of Tebay. The Reserve Champion was from T L B & J Knowles of High Borrowbridge, Selside with their Gimmer Shearling. She was sired by the record breaking 10,000gns High Cark Yankie RF2696 and noted as carrying twins to a Catholes ram. This Gimmer Shearling sold for the top price of 800gns joining the flock of A & M Skidmore of Flakebridge, Tebay. Gimmer Hoggs sold to a top of 420gns for the first prize from J Hunter of Galloper Park, Tebay sired by RF2563 Lockbank W3 selling to Duncan Burton of Rutland. A strong trade enjoyed throughout the Rough Fells saw Gimmer Hoggs average £241.50, In Lamb Gimmer Shearlings average £504 and In Lamb Ewes average £388.50. There was an entry twice the size of the previous year of Bluefaced Leicesters, with the sale gaining a strong reputation from breeders throughout the north of England and into Scotland. The pre-sale judging was in the able hands of David and James Lawson of Westhouse. There was a strong line up out for the show with the Championship rosette awarded to Messrs Lord of West Dowgill with a Gimmer Hogg sired by J1 Barf House selling to A Bastian of Dumfries. A new centre record of 2600gns was achieved for an individual Bluefaced Leicester female consigned by J Wight and Sons, Midlock Farm, Biggar. This modern stylish Gimmer Shearling sired by the renowned Midlock Mustang F027, carrying triplets to the recently purchased Shafthill K1 sold to CT & JE Willoughby of the Penhill Flock. The Gimmer Hoggs forward sold to a top of 1,300gns for first time consigner at J36; RD Archer and Son of Carry House, a replacement lot sired by G1 Highberries Highlander selling to a joint partnership of Kevin Barker, Lancaster and Luke Ayrton, Lancaster. In lamb ewes sold to a top of 1000gns from local breeder RI Dixon of Low Newton with a three-crop ewe sired by F003 Middleton Hall carrying triplets, she sold to Matthew Atkinson of Kendal, with an in-lamb gimmer shearling from the same good home selling to 1,000gns. Bluefaced Leicester gimmer hoggs sold to a market average of £689.50, in lamb gimmer shearlings averaged £1,401 and in lamb ewes averaged £748.13. The multi breed individual sale saw pedigree in lamb Beltexs sell to a top of 350gns from CM Jennings of Crake Hall, Selside, with in lamb Texels selling to 300gns from MP Berry of Highgate Farm, Stalmine. A special entry of Zwartble gimmer shearlings and hoggs all scanned in lamb sold to a top of 140gns twice. There was an entry of 350 in lamb commercial breeding sheep forward for the sale. Following on from the wet winter endured and some worrying about the current forage situation, a better trade was had than maybe expected, with quite a bit of interest ringside. In lamb Mule gimmer shearlings due march to the Texel ram sold to £122 from Paul Whitton of Burneside. A flock dispersal on behalf of WA Simpson of The Cart House, Kendal saw aged Mule ewes sell to £122. Texel shearlings topped at £112 from SL Moorhouse of Moor Farm. Aged continental ewes from the flock dispersal on behalf of J Bargh and Son of North Farm top at £110 with Suffolk ewes from the same good home sell to £105.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 26th January The strong Store Cattle sale continues with all vendors leaving with a smile on their face. Vendors are strongly urged to take advantage of the trade at the moment with all ages of cattle good to sell. Topping the sale today was an Aberdeen Angus bullock from JD & GM Bracken of Catterall, this was closely followed by British Blue bullocks selling to £1350 from JM & AG Swarbrick of Out Rawcliffe. Limousin bullocks sold to a top of £1300 from W Garnett & Son of Milnthorpe. The Heifer trade topped at £1280 for a couple of Aberdeen Angus also from JD & GM Bracken. 15% of the cattle forward today sold for £1200 or more. An upbeat trade for dairy bred steers saw Montbelliardes sell to £1150 from J Hartley & Son of Westhouse with black and white bullocks topping at £1140 from K & DE Woodhouse of Ellel. Well fed, 2 year old and upwards, black and white bullocks were often easily sold in excess of £1000. Yearling cattle were also in good demand today and were eagerly bid for. There was a larger entry of Cast Cows forward this week selling to a stronger trade, with a fresh buyer present looking to purchase well fleshed cattle. Stabiliser cows sold to a top of 179.5p/kg from JA & R Geldard & Sons of Levens with top price per head being £1339 for a Limousin cow from JE & AC Clarke & Son of Melling. Limousin cast bulls sold to a top of £1316 from PA & D Slater of Barnacre. Dairy Cows topped at £1116 for a Swedish Red from AW & AM Park & Sons of Ellel. Black and white cows topped at £1069 from AT Burrow & Son of Hornby. Over 10% of the cast cows forward today sold in excess of £1000. All cast cows forward sold to a market average of 124p/kg with all black and white cows in the market averaging 117p/kg. British Blue steers topped at £650 from JR & J Gorst of Appletree Farm. The weekly sale of Calves saw a reduced entry due to it being the monthly sale of stirks. Topping the calf trade today was a British Blue bull calf selling to £495 from R & V Walmsley of Cockerham. Aberdeen Angus bull calves topped at £295 from David & Eileen Wallbank of Over Wyresdale. There was plenty of interest in black and white bull calves today with 35 day old calves selling to £180 closely followed by 31 day old calves to £142 both from Drinkall Bros of Over Wyresdale. Monday 29th January The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had a much improved trade this week with all buyers very keen to purchase and a fresh face around the ring look for hoggs. An overall market average of 192p/kg was achieved. There was plenty of Continental hoggs selling around the 200p/kg mark. Beltex hoggs topped the market at 218p/kg from Kevin Purtill of Hindley Green with Texels from the same good home selling to 210p/kg. The trade topped at £104 for 52kg Texel from RS & IM Kellet of Mill House Farm with heavy weight Charollais from the same home to £103. There was more trade for hill bred hoggs today with 47kg Mules and Mashams from FK & F Woodhouse of Fell End selling to £85, with 40kg Swaledale ram hoggs selling to £70 from KM & KJ Curwen of Marshaw Farm. J36 Sale Reports Show & Sale of Store Cattle Thursday 25th January An entry of 250 excellent quality Store Cattle forward today at Junction 36, which included the Annual Show & Sale of Store Bullock and Heifers, with the Champion being awarded The Janet Gorst Memorial Trophy. Every customer in the market today, whole heartedly agreed with the Judges, Martin & Liam Whitaker of Clapham, choice of Champion. A fantastic British Blue x Steer forward from Messrs RT&J Gorst of The Coach House, expertly put forward by Lydia, Sam & Joe Gorst. The steer was purchased by the Gorst Family at North West Auctions from Mr George Hodgson of High Low Wood from his final sale of cattle in October 2016. The steer being bred from a bull originally bred by the Gorst Family. The Champion went on to achieve the top price of the day selling for £1370. Reserve Champion forward from Martin & Julie Winn of High Underbrow Farm was a 21month-old British Blue Heifer, which went on to achieve £1280. Trade was described to be a ‘flyer’ with vendors leaving well satisfied and more cattle could have been sold to advantage, with purchasers impressed with the quality forward for sale. Other notable entries were a consignment of Charolais and Limousin Steers from M Robinson of Mountain View, which sold to top at £1300 twice, to average £1280. Other top price Steers included Limousins from Messrs Hodgson of Rydal selling to £1280, £1250 & £1190, with Parthenais bred steers from J Holme & Son of Hollowmire Farm achieving £1230. Heifers look particularly well sold, to top at £1280 for a Blonde 21-month-old from SJ&NS Wood of Causeway Farm, with others from RT&J Gorst to £1180 for a British Blue, PW Clarke of Woodside selling Limousins to £1130, with others selling to the same price from TW Nelson & Son of Cockrigg Farm twice. The handful of Bulls in the market today selling well, to top at £1230 for a Limousin from Messrs Hodgson of Rydal Farm. A strong entry of Beef bred calves forward, with trade topping at £360.00 for a British Blue Heifer from E&SM Halpin of Rakesmoor Farm. Young beef bred calves met a strong trade with bull calves being topped by a 1-month old British Blue from HJ Robinson & Son of Elm Tree Farm, with others from DR&C Galbraith of Sunny Bank Farm at £310. Messrs JW&D Robinson & Sons of Hollins Farm selling 1-month old British Blue Heifers to £300 and £280. Just short of 30 Cast Cows and Bulls in the market today. Top price of the day was achieved by a Limousin Cow selling for 157.5p/kg from Messrs a Hodgson & Son of Borwick Lodge, followed by another Limousin at 154.5p/kg from Messrs Hodgson of Rydal Farm with the breed averaging 132.7p/kg. Dairy bred cows selling to 121.5p/kg for Holsteins from Messrs B&MJ Nelson & Son of Halforth Farm, to average 94.2p/kg. Tuesday 30th January There was a larger entry of Prime Hoggs forward today selling to a sharper trade, once again, with all firms looking for hoggs. There was an overall market average of 192p/kg, with plenty of Continental bred hoggs selling in excess of the 200p/kg mark. There was plenty of demand for Beltex hoggs which sold to a top of 231p/kg from AR & BJ Thompson of Poppy Farm with others selling to 226p/kg from JG Harryman of The Galleon. EM Standing of Kirket Nook whose run of Beltex Hoggs sold to an average of 215p/kg. Texels sold to a top of £107.50 and £104.50 from George Bell of Red Lodge with Suffolks selling to a top of £104.50, twice, firstly from Naddel Farm, Shap and secondly from DM & C Cook of Smithy Green. Horned hoggs sold to a top of £100.50 for Scottish Blackfaces from S & M Cooper of Tarnside, weighing 51kg with Mule hoggs from the same good home selling to £92.50. There was a larger entry of Cast Sheep today with 545 in the market, selling to a sharper trade with all purchase keen for sheep. The trade saw numerous pens of heavy weighing sheep and tups selling over the £100 mark topping at £118 for Charollais ewes from JA & R Geldard and sons of Low Foulshaw. Texel tups sold to £116 from M R Toms of Middle Fell with others to £115 from M Bond of Old Smithy Cottage. Texel ewes topped at £114 from JW & A Matthews of Oldfield End.
