Store Cattle, Cast Cows & Calves Lancaster Friday 25th May There were a few less Store Cattle on offer today with a mixed entry forward. The trade was topped by a consignment from DW & NM Alderson of Sedbergh selling Limousin bullocks to £1540 and Angus bullocks to £1500. There was well over 10% of the cattle forward selling in excess of £1300 today. All bullocks forward averaged in excess of £1,000 with heifers averaging close behind. The heifer trade topped at £1290 from O Butler of Kirkham. There is still plenty of interest in grazing types of cattle. There was a larger entry of Cast Cows on offer today selling to a continued strong trade for all types. There was an overall market average of 134.5p/kg achieved. The trade was topped by South Devon heifers selling to 181.5p/kg from Lucas Breeding of Adlington with black and white heifers to 174.5p/kg from S Kellet and Sons of Pilling. The cow trade topped at 171.5p/kg, again, for South Devons from Lucas Breeding. Black and white cows sold to a top of 169.5p/kg from T & CM Kelsall and Sons of Chipping or a top of £1,255 from R & A Jolleys of Cabus. The monthly sale of Stirks had an entry of 100 forward, with the sale seeing well grown and grazing types in strong demand and easily sold with plenty of trade for black and white stirks as well. The trade topped at £710 for British Blue steers from Cote Farm Partnership of Nether Kellet with Angus steers to £680 from J & DE Mitchell and Son of Cabus and Limousins to £670 from T Ayrton and Son of Over Wyresdale. The heifer trade topped at £690 for Beef Shorthorns from J & DE Mitchell and Son of Cabus. Black and white bullocks 6/7 month old sold to a top of £420 from R & A Jolleys of Cabus. There was a small entry of Calves selling to another strong trade at Lancaster and more are required. The trade topped at £360 Cote Farm Partnership of Nether Kellet with numerous young beef calves selling in the mid £200s. Black and whites topped at £115 from David and Eileen Wallbank of Over Wyresdale. Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 28th May There was a smaller entry of Spring Lambs forward this week due to the bank holiday weekend. Suffolk lambs topped the trade at £124 from DJ Casson and Son of Slyne. There was numerous pens of well finished good conformation lambs selling around 250p/kg. Winner of this week’s £5 for the highest priced pen of 4 or less spring lambs went to DJ Casson and Son of Slyne selling to a top of £124. The winner of the £10 for the highest priced pen of 5 or more went to DJ Casson and Son of Slyne selling to a top of £113. The Cast Ewe trade remains strong with all ewes in strong demand and eagerly bid for. Topping at £105 was CB Farming of Hindley with Texel ewes closely followed by A & E Clarkson of Thurnham selling to £100 with plenty of ewes in the nineties. Mule ewes twice topped at £92 from S Wilson and Son of Scotforth and A & FM Bolland of Ellel with plenty of big mule ewes around the ninety pound mark. J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 29th May A smaller entry of Sheep with Lambs at foot this week following from the show the previous week. The trade topped at £185 for Suffolk shearlings and twins from David Koller of Over Kellet. This was closely followed by £182 for Texel shearlings from G Rushton of Grange over Sands. Mule ewes sold to a top of £160 suckling Texel singles from M York of Howgill. A few hoggs on offer saw Mule hoggs with Texel singles sell to £162 and £160 from J & T Hunter of Sedbergh. Hill bred ewes saw broken mouthed Swaledales with twin Mules to £135 from G Rushton of Grange over Sands and Herdwick ewes with single Texel lambs to £100 from M York of Howgill. The largest entry to date this season saw 388 Spring Lambs forward selling to a sharper trade. There was an overall market average of 244p/kg. The trade sold to a top of £133 for heavy weight Suffolk lambs from DJ Casson and Son of Slyne, closely followed by £130 from B & HM Wilson of Selside. Plenty of good conformation lambs were selling in excess of 250p/kg, topping at 286p/kg for Suffolk cross Texel lambs from JG & BJ Escolme of Killington, closely followed by 285p/kg for Beltex lambs from TL & S Cross of Ingleton. Other Beltex lambs sold to 282p/kg from AE Atkinson and Son of Endmoor.

The smallest entry of Cast Sheep for some time today, with many vendors busy taking advantage of this great weather we are enjoying. Larger Continental and Suffolk ewes sold in excess of the £100 mark. The sale topped at £116 for Continental ewes from TL & S Cross of Ingleton. Mule ewes sold to a top of £84 from JE Wightman of Lupton with others around the eighty-pound mark. All specifications of ewes continue to be well bid for in J36 and vendors should take advantage of the trade.
