J36 Show & Sale of InIn-Lamb Sheep Saturday 26th January North West Auctions held their annual Show and Sale of In-Lamb Females and Gimmer Hoggs at J36 on Saturday 26th January. There was a catalogued entry of 206 sheep. The Annual ‘Rough Diamonds’ sale of Rough Fell individual females on behalf of the Rough Fell Sheep Breeders Association saw a busy ringside of buyers attracting interest from throughout the country. The pre-sale judging was in the capable hands of Duncan Burton, Rutland who had an impressive line up of sheep to cast his eye over. The Championship rosette was awarded to lot 41, a gimmer shearling from TLB & J Knowles, Selside which was sired by the 10,000gns High Cark Yankie and was carrying twins. This gimmer shearling won at the Great Yorkshire Show as a lamb and went on to sell for 600gns. The Reserve Champion was awarded to lot 44 from JA Law, Newbiggin-on-Lune with a gimmer hogg sired by Barugh Zebedee, selling for 200gns. The Rough Fell trade topped at 650gns for a 3 crop ewe, which was 3rd prize in class one, from SL Hoggarth, Birkhaw. This was sired by Raisgill Hall Underestimated and carrying twins. This was closely followed by 600gns for lot 50 from MP & A Capstick, Newbiggin-on-Lune. There was a strong sale average for in-lamb Rough Fells with ewes averaging £430.50, shearlings averaging £478.80 and gimmer hoggs averaging £157.50. The inaugural show and sale of Individual Swaledales had an entry of 24. This attracted a large amount of interest from renowned breeders, both vendors and purchasers travelling from throughout the North to attend. The pre-sale judging was in the capable hands of Andrew Bainbridge, Richmond, awarding the Champion to lot 58 from W Richardson & Son, Dufton with a Swaledale ewe sired by a Clarkson ram. This went on to sell for 1500gns, purchased by the Judge. Also achieving 1500gns was lot 57, a ewe from the same good home. The Reserve Championship was awarded to lot 17 from PE & KA Sowerby, Barras, sired by a Bull & Cave ram, this went on to sell for 750gns. Leading the way in the gimmer hoggs was P Hallam, Horton in Ribblesdale, sired by a home bred ram, this Hogg won its class and went on to sell for 500gns. The opening sale was classed as a success and we look forward to this sale growing. The Annual show and sale of Bluefaced Leicester females saw a much larger entry this year, attracting many fresh consignments. Thanks go to our pre-sale judge Gillian Sedgley, Kirkby Lonsdale for her time and expertise. She had strong classes to judge especially the Gimmer Hogg class with 20 out for show. The Championship was awarded to lot 119 Carry House L075 from RD Archer & Son, Hexham with a stylish modern gimmer hogg. This was sired by G1 Highberries Highlander, out of the full sister to Carry House Jackpot J2. This went on to sell for 1400gns. Reserve Champion was awarded to J Wight & Son, Biggar with lot 101 Midlock K96 sired by Hewgill J6, carrying triplets to Midlock L27. This gimmer shearling had many influential bloodlines in her breeding and went on to sell for 900gns. The trade topped at 1600gns for a stylish gimmer hogg, lot 104 Midlock L121 from J Wight & Son sired by K1 Highberries. This was closely followed by J & W Bell, Auchengray selling lot 136 Cottage L48 to 1500gns. This gimmer hogg created a lot of pre-sale interest, sired by Blarnavaid J012 with the dam’s breeding going back to C024 Highberries. Debutante, S Allan & Sons, Dufton has had great success recently selling gimmer hoggs and sold lot 143 Greenhow L040 to 1500gns, this was sired by K1 Riddings, which is doing very well for the flock. There was plenty of interest for the in-lamb females with these topping at 1000gns for the second prize gimmer shearling from G & AJ Rawsthorne, Nether Kellet for lot 93 Lunesdale K074. This gimmer shearling was sired by Hundith F3 and is a sister to many breeding rams which are proving successful. There was strong market averages especially considering the year, and the large increase in numbers forward for the sale, saw ewes average £371, shearlings averaged £640 and gimmer hoggs averaged £588. A large number of multi-breed females were entered this year which saw a buoyant trade for all classes of sheep forward. A larger number of Texel in-lamb sheep were forward this year. Leading the way at 300gns was a 1 crop Texel carrying twins from DH Lucas & FA Nairey, Blackburn. This was closely followed by gimmer shearlings carrying twins from GR & A Surtess, Lancaster selling to 280gns. There was plenty of in-lamb Texel females selling in the mid two hundreds. Zwartbles saw a large amount of interest ringside and a buoyant trade with in-lamb sheep from DH Hogg, Murton selling to 360gns for ewes with gimmer shearlings selling to 310gns and 240gns, with L Hodgson, Crook achieving 240gns and 220gns. All in-lamb Zwartbles forward sold to a market average of £218. A consignment of Mule gimmer shearlings scanned in-lamb to the Beltex ram from BJ Bowness, Kendal sold to a top of £170 and £160; more could have easily been sold with many potential buyers leaving empty handed. The next sale of in-lamb sheep will take place on Thursday 14th February entries are now being taken for advertising.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 25th January There was an entry of over 300 Store Cattle forward which saw a very mixed show of Store Cattle, but once again as usual, a full sale clearance. There was numerous cattle sold to a top of £1290 with British Blue bullocks from H & JA Gorst, Caldervale Simmental Bullocks from R Escolme, Bay Horse and Angus heifers from R & DM Rossall & Son, Pilling. Also selling excess of the £1200 was Simmental bullocks from E J Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with Limousins to the same price from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof, Limousin bulls form the same home sold to £1160. Plenty of consignments of short keep, well-fleshed cattle sold in excess of the £1100 mark. Black and whites saw feeding heifers from R & A Jolleys, Cabus selling to £1080 with Montbeliarde steers from A & T Smith, Longridge selling to the same price. It was noticeable that there was more demand for black and white bullocks this week.

There was a smaller entry of 89 Cast Cows this week where more could have easily been sold with all specifications of cows a sharper trade. OTM heifers sold to a top of 179.5p/kg, twice, firstly for Limousins from R Keith, Grange-over-Sands with Angus’ from AK & PA Threlfall, Inskip. Black and white heifers sold to 154.5p/kg from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton. Beef cows topped at 169.5p/kg for Charolais with British Blues to 159.5p/kg both consigned by AG & GM Rowlanson, Killington. A few cast bulls forward today saw Herefords top at £1394 from MJ Fell, Whittington with Limousins selling to 134.5p/kg or £1269 from RH & RA Fawcett, Burton. Limousin cows sold to a top of £1189 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead with Simmental cows to £1099 from T & M Halhead, Priest Hutton. Black and whites sold to a top of £1079 from AT Burrow & Son, Hornby. The OTM ring saw an overall average of 113p/kg with black and whites averaging 97p/kg.

Lancaster’s monthly sale of Stirks had an entry of 80 forward for the sale which saw a strong trade for well-grown and good quality beef stirks with the trade selective for black and whites. Bullocks stirks sold to a top of £760 from P & A Bell, Pilling. Hereford bullocks topped at £720 from S Moore, Pilling. British Blues sold to a top of £690 from G & ME Smith, Samlesbury. The bull trade topped at £650 for British Blues from J & G Thornley, Kirkham. Heifers sold to a top of £580 for Herefords from S Moore. Plenty of stirks sold into the £500s. Friesians sold to a top of £390 for bullocks from Cote Farm Patnership, Nether Kellet. There was an entry of over 50 calves forward this week which saw British Blues top at £365, £360 and £345 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel with Hereford bull calves topping at £330 from C & J Smith, St Michaels. Plenty of strong beef calves sold around the £300 mark. Young beef calves often sold around the £200 mark. Black and white bull calves sold to a top of £130 from C & J Smith, with Wallbank farms selling twice to £100 and to £95. A new buyer in the market for black and whites saw younger types a sharper trade.

Monday 28th January The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs saw a slightly larger entry forward this week with a larger proportion of hill bred and heavy weight hoggs forward leading to a lesser average of 182p/kg. Topping the trade today at £98 was Texel hoggs from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth with others from the same home selling to £96. Heavy weight Continental Hoggs topped at £90 from WTC Farms, Preston. There was plenty of pens of hoggs selling in the mid to late eighties. Hill hoggs sold to a top of £83 for Cheviots from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead with Mules achieving £80 from Bargh Contractors, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Plenty of pens of Mules sold in the late seventies. J36 Sale Reports New Year Show & Sale of Store Cattle - Thursday 24th January The New Year Show and Sale of Store Cattle saw a catalogued entry of 370 which attracted buyers from throughout the Northern Counties with several new purchasers in attendance keen to secure replacement stock. Vendors must be complimented on the quality of the cattle presented at this sale; keep them coming as we have strong buyer interest for all types of cattle. The next sale is Thursday 7 February to include the Anniversary Prize Show for Store Cattle. Today’s show was kindly judged by Miss Ellie Hargreaves, Preston who had an impressive entry of 21 show cattle put before her in the two show classes. The Championship rosette and winner of the Janet Gorst Perpetual Challenge Trophy was awarded to a 15 month old British Blue x Steer from MA & JA Winn, Burneside which later sold to the judge for £1300. The Reserve Champion was a 15 month old Limousin X Heifer, again, from MA & JA Winn which achieved £1200. A large crowd of buyers saw 35 successful purchasers with many leaving empty handed or short of numbers. The sale topped at £1355 for a Limousin X steer from TA Chapman & Son, Helsington with other stronger, well-bred steers £1100 to £1250. A large entry of yearling steers sold to £1030 from M & D Hutton with others £880 to £1000. Youngest suckler steers were £720 to £850. Heifers topped at £1200 for a Limousin X from MA & JA Winn with other nice pens of well grown heifers £980 to £1150. Yearling heifers sold to £920 for a Blonde X from MJ Whitworth, with others £780 to £880. Younger suckler heifers £580 to £680. A large entry of native bred cattle saw Hereford X steers to £1120 from JE Wightman, Aberdeen Angus x steers sold to £1000 and 7 month old Beef Shorthorn steers £695. The fortnightly sale of Calves and stirks had another good entry of over 70 forward. Another younger show of calves forward again, but there was extra buyers present around the ringside, meaning trade was stronger on the previous weeks. The trade topped at £340, twice, firstly for 5 weeks old British Blue bull from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and for strong Limousin bulls from RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington to the same price. Heifer calves saw a stronger trade today, with a Limousin topping at £290 from RF & CE Hodgson, with others to £280 for British Blues from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg. A younger show of dairy bred bulls forward this morning topped at £150 for a Fleckveihs from Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck. It was nice to have a few stirks about this morning, selling to a good trade topping at £500 for a 4 mouth old Limousin Bull from PW Clarke, Crosthwaite

The sale of Cast Cows peaked at 147.5p/kg for a Limousin X from J Twigge, Grange over Sands with other heavy beef cows 115p/kg to 130p/kg, leaner feeding types were 90p/kg to 110p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 139.5p/kg from AE & M Hayhurst, Natland with an entry of predominantly parlour cows 80p/kg to 95p/kg. Top grossing cow today was £933 from J Twigge. A cull bull from PW Clarke achieved 144.5p/ kg or £1004. All cows today averaged 102p/kg with half the entry being dairy cows.

Tuesday 29th January There was a smaller entry of Prime Hoggs forward this week due to the bad weather. Thanks go to those who braved the weather today and were rewarded with a strong trade. An entry of 713 forward sold to an average of 194p/kg with an SQQ average of 201p/kg with 32kg to 39kg hoggs averaging 205p/kg. Leading the trade today at 236p/kg was Beltex hoggs from JG Harryman, Hawkshead which sold to £90 with others from the same good home selling to 226p/kg or £95. Plenty of good conformation hoggs sold in excess of 210p/kg. Top price per head was £102 for Texel hoggs from B & JM Crowe, Witherslack with other Texel hoggs selling to £100 from JG Harryman. Beltex hoggs sold to £95 from PJ Onions, Arkholme. Hill bred hoggs saw Mules sell to a top of £82 from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge, with Mules selling to a top of 207p/kg from J Longworth, Ulpha. There was a reduced entry of just short of 350 Cast Sheep for today’s sale selling to another buoyant trade at J36. Best Continental ewes sold in excess of the £100 mark topping at £119 from Harry Geldard, Levens. This was closely followed by £113 from K Birkett, Burton-inKendal for Texels, with WS Burrow & Son, Silverdale selling to £117 and £107. Plenty of sheep sold around the £90 mark. Mule ewes were a sharper trade this week, twice topping at £75 from D Crowe, Witherslack and K Armer, Kendal. Plenty of big Mule ewes sold around the £70 mark. Horned ewes saw Lonks sell to £58 and £57 from GJ Ibbetson, Roeburndale West with Swaledales selling to a top of £49. Plenty of strong horned ewes sold in the mid to late forties.
