J36 Rural Auction Centre: Annual Show & Sale of Breeding Ewes & Gimmer Shearlings, Saturday 23rd August 2025.

North West Auctions held its much anticipated annual prize show and sale of breeding sheep on Saturday 23rd August, which saw a high quality, catalogued entry of all classes of sheep attracting buyers from far and wide. North West Auctions would like to thank all judges and sponsors from today’s sale and compliment all vendors on the high quality stock presented.
The pre sale show of North of England Mule shearlings competing for the JT Nelson Memorial Shield saw twelve pens presented before the judge, Shane MaGill, who after much deliberation awarded the first prize and Championship rosette to TH Gibson & Son, Staveley for an outstanding pen of ten, which were all purchased at the Kendal NEMSA sale held at J36. The first prize pen of Mule ewes and receiving the Derek Cleasby Memorial Trophy was awarded to a pen of two crop Su olks from TA&JA Dixon, Selside. The show for Cheviot Mule shearlings was won by JS&KM Wilson, Kendal. The show for ten Masham shearlings were kindly judged by Chris Gibson and won by MJ Woof, Millriggs Farm. The any other breed ewes class was kindly judged by Mark Dodgson who awarded the first prize rosette to J&M Wilson, Selside showing a pen of two crop home bred Texel cross ewes. The Continental and Su olk shearling class was won by JR&LA Capstick, Killington with a pen of Texel cross ewes. The sale commenced with Breeding Ewes which saw a packed ringside of buyers keen to secure replacement stock from renowned, regular vendors. North Country Mule ewes sold to a top price of £275 for one crops from JM Mawson, Cleator Moor closely followed by other two crops at £270 and £265 x3 from TA&JA Dixon, Selside. Other two crop ewes were £260 from FI&ME Little, Barrows Green and one crop £260 T Sharp, Levens. Two crop Rough Fell Mule ewes from MJ&JD Handley, Sedbergh sold to £235. Older ewes sold to £220 for three crop Mules from T Edmondson, Ulverston with four crops to £205 from J&R Armitstead, Docker. All Mule ewes forward averaged £206.50. Su olk cross ewes sold to £280 for one crop from TA&JA Dixon, Selside who sold others at £265. Older Su olk cross ewes also sold at £265 from JJ&M Metcalfe, Kirkby
Lonsdale. All Su olk cross ewes averaged £263.53. Pure Texel, three crop ewes sold to £300 from JJ&M Metcalfe, with others at £290 from JT&A Armitstead, Selside. One and two crop Texel cross Mule ewes sold to £275 from FI&ME Little, Barrows Green with others at £255 from JJ&M Metcalfe, Kirkby Londale. Older continental cross ewes generally were £205 to £220, with all sold averaging £221.59. Cheviot cross Mule ewes sold to £265 from J&M Wilson, Selside.
Charity Sheep Auction – Today’s sale saw Ian Little, Helm Croft, Barrows Green kindly donate a Su olk cross shearling with lamb at foot with all sale proceeds going to Great North Air Ambulance on behalf of Richard and Helen Gardiner and Family, who required the assistance of the air ambulance for life saving transportation of their three month old daughter Grace, back in 2006. Richard, Helen and family are extremely grateful to everyone for their support today.
A larger show of Masham shearlings this year and the first year of a show also at Junction 36. The champions today courtesy of J Woof, Sedbergh making £205. Top price today was from J&C Wright, Skipton with a run of shearlings topping at £250 and not having a pen under £190.
A flying trade for Cheviot Mules, with a large entry forward. Champion pen today was from J Wilson, Wray making £325 and a top price of £330 x2. Trade for these overall was very solid, with all vendors making £230 plus.
The much anticipated and prestigious show and sale of Mule shearlings saw a catalogue entry of 2628 North of England Mules sell to a ringside of local and travelled buyers. The judging was carried out by Mule enthusiast Shane MaGill who went on to back his judgment purchasing the 1st prize pen from TH Gibson & son, Staveley at the day’s top price of £340, with this good home selling pens to £310 x3 and £300 x2. The run from JS&KM Wilson, Kendal sold to £295, with others to £285 from JM Mawson, Cleator Moor, £285 x2 for Messrs Whittaker, Millom and a pen at the same price from N Barker, Dalton. Other noted prices included £280 from M&YA Barker, Halton, £270 Fox Farms, Clitheroe with AR Edmondson, Ulverston selling two pens at the same price. Mule shearlings today averaged a very strong £241.47.
Continental and Su olk shearlings were also a joy to sell, with good quality very good to sell. Su olks flew to £390 for a fantastic pair from J&C Airey, Ulverston. The same home had another pair at £375 and three at £370. Texels topped at £355 for the champion pen of ten from JR&LA Capstick, Killington. Another pen of ten from Josh Wilson, Wray sold to £320 for top quality gimmers. An entry of Park type Cheviots topped at £285 for a pen of ten again from J&C Airey, Ulverston.

Less numbers about today with the combination of the bank holiday and the trend in prime lamb trade last week. Today’s average was 312p/kg which looks good compared with the end of last week across other centres. Good quality is still good to sell and are making for far better returns than this time last year. Lambs sold to £174 from GS Lander for a sizable Charollais, a pair of Texels from J Pinder & Sons sold to £169 and J Twigge also sold Texels to the £167 mark. A pen of five Beltex from WS Burrow Ltd sold for 342p/kg, while a pair of Beltex from Ian Richardson sold for 338p/kg. A pen of eight Texel again from J Twigge sold for 337p/kg.

Store lambs also a strong trade today, J Gardner sold a pen of five Texels to £106 and a pen of six to £104. Two lots of twelve sold to £100, both times from JH Thornhill.

PIGS
Pigs can fly - Especially if you bring them to J36!
A crackling trade today for pigs all-round, with fat pigs getting close to reaching the £300 mark. £280 x2 was the top price today from Mr John Stott for two fantastic prime gilts weighing 115kg. Lighter pigs of good quality were a good trade also, with Wendy Stamper’s 68kg gilts making £160. Weaners topped at £95 each, with an average of £63. Resilient lamb trade exceeds expectation.
Today’s weekly prime lamb sale at Junction 36 saw competitive bidding from the outset resulting in a firm result. Lambs topped per head today at £211 from RHM&S Boyren, this was for a Texel. Another single Texel hit £207 this time from Alan Thompson. Heavies very much in demand with plenty of pens between the £190 and £200 mark.
Today’s overall average was 313p/kg, for strong numbers forward once again. Top price per kilo was 379.6p/kg from Alan Thompson for a smart pair of Texels weighing 49kg, the same good farming had three more pairs at 376.4p/kg, 375p/kg and 369.6p/kg. Leicester lambs topped at £192 from Messrs Boyren. A pen of ten Su olks sold for £172 from J&R Bell, Dorsets topped at £155 from J&R Waller and Mules topped at £150 from Drinkall Bros.

STORE LAMBS
An increase in number forward and the average achieved at Junction 36 increasingly popular store lamb sale, with 3863 sold to average £102.86.
Trade was still buoyant for strong forward lambs of good quality with these regular selling upwards of £120.
Topping at £147 were Texels from MB&J Fell, Kendal. Mules again looked a good trade with these topping at £112 for twenty from JD&M Capstick, Fellside and averaging £98.87 for the entirety of

the Mules forward. Smaller long term lambs were harder to place as a result of the ongoing drought and Blue Tongue restrictions. These selling anywhere from £75 to £95.

A large entry of calves forward today at Lancaster, with 103 forward. Native sired bulls sold to £850 for Herefords from JR Newsham, Conder Green with Aberdeen Angus £780 from AW&AM Park, Ellel. STORE CATTLE
Lancasters weekly store cattle sale saw a decent entry of over two hundred, with trade similar on the week, despite dead weight quotations being down.
DR Preston, Caton stole the limelight this week with his consignment of well farmed steers topping of at £2600 for a cracking Simmental steer with its mate not far behind at £2460.
A pen of three Charolais steers from local Lancaster supports Pilling Hall achieved a final bid of £2450, with DJ&MC Platt, Caton at the same money this time for a Limousin. Aberdeen Angus steers also at £2450, this time from RB&G Robinson, Carnforth who also had British Blues to £2420 for a pair. Plenty of other strong steers round the £2250 to £2400 mark. Dairy bred bullocks were a nice trade, topping at £2150 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse for Friesians with other from the same home at £1980 for a pen of four. Other Friesian bred 20 month old steers looked well sold round the £1700 to £1800 mark.

A pen of four British Blue from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham would top the store heifer section today at £2200, with a pair of Hereford heifers not far behind at £2180 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling. While a Limousin heifer from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington sold to £2100. As always Aberdeen Angus heifers are easily sold at Lancaster, with T&E Garlick, Freckleton seeing his good run of heifers to £2100. Plenty of other Aberdeen Angus heifers were around the £2000 mark. Charolais heifers from EE Thornton, Heaton saw their pair to £2020. A good number of Hereford heifers in the

market today, M Shepherd & Son, Pilling sold to £2180 and P&S Alpe, Clitheroe to £1820.
The monthly stirk sale at Lancaster saw a ring full of buyers, all eager to secure younger cattle to replace what they had earlier sold. D&J Hay, Cockerham saw their 13 month old British Blue steers achieve £1750 and a smart Charollais to £1750. JW Thwaite, Tebay saw his monthly consignment of stirks sell to £1380 for a pen of five Aberdeen Angus at 12 month old, with others from the same good home to £1300. Dairy bred steers from R&J Parkinson, Preesall sold to £1100 for some solid looking Friesians at eleven months old.

OTM CATTLE
A very hard worked show of cows in today, with trade exceeding vendors expectations and yet again numbers falling short of demand.
Top pence per kilo was a Hereford heifer from AT Burrow, Hornby achieving 354.5p/kg, with cows selling to 339.5p/kg for Black and Whites from J Huddleston, Brookhouse and the same price paid for Charolais from T Longton & Son, Quernmore. Other cows were regularly 265p/kg to 300p/kg, with the very leanest falling below.
Top grossing was £2392.88 for a Hereford heifer from AT Burrow, with a Charolais cow
from T Longton & Son close behind at £2342.55. Black and whites sold to £2325.58 from J Huddleston, Brookhouse with others to £2238.80 from RT Halhead, Cockerham.
