Easter Spring Lambs Sales Lancaster Auction Mart - Monday 26th March The first sale of the season of Spring Lambs set off to a bouncing trade. There was plenty of interest from buyers with seven active buyers ringside and buyers going away still requiring more lambs. The pre-sale show was judged by Steven Seddon of Lakes and Dales, who we thank for his time and expertise. The Championship rosette was awarded to JD & V Towers of Camp House of Farleton, for a Beltex x lamb weighing 45kg selling for £189 or 420p/kg, bought by the judge, Steven Seddon, on behalf of Nigel Wilkinson Quality Meats Specialist of Blackpool. The Reserve Champion was awarded to a 49kg Suffolk from TA Blair of Thornfleet selling for £169, again bought by the judge on behalf of Nigel Wilkinson Quality Meats Specialist. This was closely followed by Beltex x lambs from JD & V Towers weighing 41kg selling to £163 purchased by Halton Village Butchers. Also selling in excess of the £150 mark was a 44kg Suffolk from TA Blair selling to £157 purchased by Gregory Williams Butcher of Lancaster. Texels achieved £157 from W Bradley of Goosnargh weighing 44kg purchased by Michael Lomax of Milnthorpe. The entry of 30 spring lambs sold to an overall market average 327p/kg with SQQ average of 338p/kg with all forward selling to an average of £132.73. J36 Rural Auction Centre - Tuesday 27th March The opening sale of Spring Lambs, which included the Easter Spring Show, had an entry of 29 forward. The pre-sale judging was put in to the capable hands of Raymond Matterson of Bootle. The judge had two classes placed in front of him, one for Continental bred lambs and the other for Native bred. The Continental class was won by JD & V Towers & Son of Farleton for their Beltex x Charollais lamb weighing 46kg, which went on to achieve the Championship honours. The native class was won by GI Richmond of Garstang with a 58kg Suffolk. A fantastic sale followed, where the Champion went on to achieve the days top price selling for £177 or 384.8p/kg, purchased by MN Alam of Lancashire Direct Halal Meat Ltd. The best Native bred lamb from GI Richmond, went on to achieve £152 or 262.1p/kg, with the judge backing his decision, purchasing the lamb on behalf of Irvings Butchers of Ulverston. An overall average for Spring Lambs was achieved of 228.67p/kg, reflecting a show where the majority entry were Native Bred lambs. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 23rd March The weekly sale of Store Cattle saw a buoyant trade throughout with a mixed show of cattle forward. Large well-fleshed cattle continue to sell very well at Lancaster with purchasers also now looking for grazing type cattle. Topping the trade today was a pen of four Charolais Bullocks from TN Nelson & Partners, Lancaster selling to £1450. Native Cattle always good to sell at Lancaster, with a pen of three Aberdeen Angus Bullocks selling to £1390 from WA Cardwell, Stalmine. It is beneficial to vendors to batch cattle into bigger groups to gain full financial benefit. Heifers sold to a top of £1270 for a pen of four Aberdeen Angus from G Sagar & Son, Caton. Black and White Bullocks sold to a top of £1090 for a pen of three from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton. Over 15% of the cattle forward today sold in excess of £1200. All types of cattle continued to be needed at Lancaster especially with spring approaching. There was a smaller entry of Cast Cows forward today with 85 in the market, selling to another continuous good trade. There was an overall market average of 124p/kg with more cows required week on week to meet the strong demand of 14 active buyers. This average was achieved with 95% being dairy bred cows. OTM Heifers sold to a top of 187.5p/kg for a Limousin from T & S Blades, Arkholme. Young Black and White Cows sold to 164.5p/kg from CJ Birkett, Carnforth. Best Black and White Cows sold to £1202 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. There were numerous best fleshed dairy cows selling over the £1000 mark. There was a much reduced entry of Calves forward this week. Three week old British Blue Bulls sold to £240 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Limousin weaned Heifer calves sold to £330 from K Whitaker & Son, Bay Horse. Dairy bulls topped at £130 for Montbelliardes from JK & B Birkett & Son, Morecambe. Monday 26th March A larger entry of 481 Prime Hoggs in the market this week sold to a continued strong trade averaging 220p/kg. There was a mixed entry of hoggs with well-finished hoggs in strong demand and very easily sold. Topping the trade was 45kg Texel hoggs selling to 282p/kg or £127 from George Sanderson and Family of Catforth. This was closely followed by 277p/kg for Beltex cross hoggs from J Smith of Daisy Bank. Heavy weight Texel hoggs twice sold to £126 from Andrew Butler of Hambleton and DM Cardwell of Stalmine with plenty of heavy weight, well-fleshed hoggs sold around the £120. Numerous pens of well-fleshed hoggs weighing in the mid-forties sold in excess of the one hundred mark regularly. Continental and Suffolk ewes with twins easily sold in excess of £200 topping at £238 for broken mouthed Continental ewes and lambs from JA Heap and Son of Barnacre. Suffolk ewes with twin lambs sold to £210 from James Burr of Quernmore with Mule ewes and twins selling to £180 from the same home. J36 Sale Reports Thursday 22nd March An excellent entry of 400 Store Cattle forward for the Spring Show & Sale of Suckler Bred Cattle at Junction 36, where vendors should be congratulated on the quality of cattle entered. The show classes were ably judged by David Wright of Bakewell, who awarded the 1st Prize Suckler Bred Bullock the Champion honours from A&P Hodgkinson of Poulton-le-Fylde. The Reserve being awarded to the 1st Prize Heifer forward from TMW&H Hodgson of Nibthwaite. We would like to thank our judge for this time and expertise and to our sale sponsors Lloyd Motor Group and Rural Law Practice for their generous support. Top price of the day was achieved by the Show Champion, a Limousin steer 11mo, selling for £1190, followed by another from D Nicholson of Blawith at £1180, with 3 other steers selling for £1160 from TMW&H Hodgson, M Robinson of Lowgill and J&ME Bateman of Lowgill. All steers in the market sold to average £906.36. The heifer section was topped by Thor Atkinson of Newlands for a Limousin Heifer 26mo which was fit to bull selling for £1170, with others from the same home to £1100 & £1080. The Reserve Champion from Messrs Hodgson went on to sell for £1050. All heifers in the market averaging £787.50. A consignment of 6 Pure Limousin bulls from K Thomas of Firbank sold to £1080, to average £1006.67. An overall average of £873.33, where a large percentage of the entries were young suckler bred cattle, with 50 lots being sold for £1000 or more. There was a bumper entry of over 80 Calves and stirks in the market this week. The trade topped at £400 for British Blue bulls from Messrs Sowerby of Appleby, heifers from the same home sold to £310, again for British Blues. Plenty of beef calves sold around the £300 mark. There was the sharpest trade for some time for black and white calves at J36 selling to a top of £190 from Messrs Sowerby, closely followed by £165 from HJ Robinson & Son of Milnthorpe. There was plenty of good quality rearing black and whites seeing the bestselling in excess of the £100 with younger ones selling towards £100. A few stirks on offer today were in strong demand with grass day coming ever closer with fresh faces ringside looking to purchase. A show of 50 Cast Cows & OTM Cattle were forward for sale at Junction 36 today, selling, once again, to a strong trade, with all classes well bid for. The day’s trade was topped by a tremendous British Blue cow achieving 179.5p/kg from N Cooper & Sons of Woodland. A consignment of 3 pure Blonde Cows from BT Atkinson of Newlands sold to a top of 171.5p/kg to average 165p/kg. Dairy bred cattle sold to a top of 141.5p/kg for Montbeliardes from JJ&MA Park & Son of Helsington, who also sold Swedish Red & Whites to 134.5p/kg. Holstein and Friesian Cattle sold to 139.5p/kg from J Scott & Co of Cark-in-Cartmel and 134.5p/kg from JW Hargreaves of Woodland. All cows and heifers in the market selling to an average of 128.68p/kg, with Holsteins averaging 113.8p/kg. The monthly sale of Breeding Cattle saw an entry of a dozen outfits forward, creating plenty of interest from buyers in which more could have been sold with buyers leaving empty handed. Topping the trade was a second calved pure Limousin cow suckling a bull calf at foot selling to £1850 from Thor Atkinson of Ulverston, with a fifth calved pure Limousin cow with bull calf at foot selling to £1,680. British Blue second calved cows with a Limousin calf at foot sold to £1650 from K Whitaker and Son of Bay Horse with British Blue heifers and Limousin calves from the same home to £1,600.

J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 27th March A small entry of 13 Prime Pigs forward this month, with trade back on the month before as seen nationally. The trade was topped by A Preston of Whitehaven achieving £125 five times, with NJ Wilkinson of New House achieving 147p/kg. An overall average of 115.84p/kg being achieved. A smaller show of Sheep with Lambs at Foot forward at Junction 36, with 54 families forward for sale. The trade slightly easier on the week before, with purchasers being selective due to current grazing and weather conditions. All vendors satisfied with trade, with an overall average of £54.48 per life being achieved for all sheep forward. The trade was topped by a pen of pure Charollais Shearlings with Twin Lambs forward from Julie Fell of Bootle selling for £205 per family, selling others with Singles to £170. Ewes with Lambs sold to a top of £182 from Tony Ellis of New Hutton for Mules with Twins, with others to £180. TW Gorst of Crook also selling Mules Ewes with Twin Lambs to £180. Entries for next week (3rd April) already include consignments of Mule Ewes with Texel Lambs at Foot An entry of 700 Prime Hoggs were forward at J36 today, where a fantastic trade was seen for all classes, with an overall SQQ average of 228.27p/kg achieved. The Hogg section was topped by pure Lleyns from JA&R Geldard & Sons of Gilpin Bridge at £138, with others to £134. F&SA Edmondson of Ulverston sold Suffolks to £136. George Harryman of Hawkshead topped the market at 318.4p/kg with a fantastic run of 108 Hoggs which went on to average £116.27 which included Beltex, Texel, Suffolk and Mules. The majority of hoggs forward today were within the medium weight bracket (39-45kgs) which saw an average of 238p/kg. A smaller entry of Cast Ewes in the market today with the trade continuing to be very strong. Large Continental ewes were in strong demand and more could have been easily sold. This week’s sale saw the most ewes selling in excess of £120 for some time. The trade topped at £147 for Charollais ewes from Julie Fell of Bootle, followed by Beltex ewes to £141 from B & AC Barnes of Middleton. Tups topped at £136 for Beltex from AR & C Fawcett of Gosforth, Continental tups from the same home to £131. Mule and Masham ewes continue to be a sharp trade. Masham ewes sold to £104 from T Ellis of New Hutton closely followed by £98 from E Lund and Son of Ingleton. Mule ewes sold to £97 from J & M Wilson of Selside, with plenty of pens of strong mule ewes selling in the nineties. Horned ewes sold to £80 for Swaledales from F & SA Edmondson of Ulverston with plenty of fit horned ewes around the seventy pound mark.
