PRIME HOGGS
Prime hoggs sell to £190 and 460ppk at LAM.
Plenty of interest in prime hoggs today with buyers ringside and keen to fulfil orders. Well finished and standard weight lambs were in keenest demand with a market sqq of 369ppk and overall 348ppk. Hoggs sold to £190 for Charolais x Beltex from regular supporter AG Butler closely followed by JE Parkinson & Son selling Beltex x at £187, £184 and Texel x to £182 from SH & LE Birkett and £180 from FI & ME Little. Hill bred lambs saw Cheviots sell to £170 from WB Kellet, Masham to £170 from T & D Wright and Mules to £155 from RG & H Preece and Swaledale to £129 from M & L Preece. JE Parkinson & Son enjoyed a good day’s trading leading the sale with Beltex x hoggs at 460ppk closely followed by RM Gornall selling Beltex x at 454ppk. Endless pens of well finished standard weights hoggs 380-420ppk with next draw 350-375ppk. Hill bred hoggs to 410ppk for Cheviots, 343ppk for Mules, 331ppk for Swaledales. A smaller show today but trade was up on the previous week.
Topping the trade was a prime gilt from John Stott making £205, with two running mates at £200 apiece. Young stores were a strong trade with some smart types from Messrs Critchley, Preston making £70.

PRIME HOGGS
Prime hogg trade in full force.
A proper red hot sale ring from start to finish, with quality well fed sheep rewarded accordingly. 40kg hoggs led the way on pence per kilo topping at 450p/pk from Messrs GM&A Jackson. Just behind was Messrs Threlkeld selling a pen of 41kg hoggs to 448.8p/kg. Heavier lambs also a joy to sell, with 50kg hoggs hitting 428pp/kg or £214 again from Messrs Jackson. 45kg Texels from the run of quality from KA Purtill made 408.9p/kg, with an abundance of good sheep above the 400p/kg mark today. Lighter hoggs continue to sell like hot cakes, with a pair of 38kg to 384.2p/kg from JA Airey. A pair of 34kgs hoggs achieved 370.6p/kg from D&J Woof and Cheviot hoggs selling to 369.4p/kg for a run of eight from Messrs AR Edmondson.

Ewes again good to sell with all classes easy to cash. Heavy better-bred ewes in short supply meeting a tasty trade with AR Edmondson, Ulverston selling Su olks to £265 and £262. Heaviest first cross ewes to £210 from W Garnett, Milnthorpe with Mules to £178 from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg. Best end of mules £150+, next grade down £125-£140. Horned ewes still adding up well, selling to £140 for Rough Fells from NW & EM Mason, Middleton with plenty of pens top side of £110, mediums to £85-£100 and the plainer end £45+.

IN LAMB BREEDING SHEEP
Today’s sale featured several dispersal sales from noted local flocks which saw a large crowd of local and travelled purchasers in attendance keen to secure additional and replacement stock. The sale commenced with the dispersal of Cheviot and Swaledale ewes, shearlings and gimmer hoggs on behalf of Low Moor Howe Farm Ltd, Windermere due to a change in farming policy. The first lot in the ring shared the top price of the day being £300 for Black Cheviot 2 crop ewes carrying Texel x lambs. Other Cheviot ewes to £275, £260, £255, £240. Cheviot shearlings shared the top price of £300 for a pen of 10 due Mid-March to Cheviot with others at £270, £235, £225, £220. Cheviot gimmer hoggs sold to £170, £152, £150. Swaledale shearlings in lamb to Swaledale peaked at £225 with others at £220, £205, £200 with gimmer hoggs to £210, £192, £152, £148. Other in lamb sheep today saw Mule hoggs sell to £200 from W Gardner and aged Mule ewes from A Riley sell to £185, £175, £170. The next sale of breeding sheep is Thursday 12th March to include flock dispersal of 150 Texel, Su olk and Mule Ewes from Long & Knipe, Ulverston

Store lambs up a gear in line with recent lift in prime lamb trade.
Topping today at £160 were Texels from CS Long & RH Knipe, Ulverston with other pens to £159 from DR & C Galbraith or £154 from the Holgate’s, Silverdale. Endless pens selling north of £135 with strongest mules reaching £138 from JH Barker & Son, Ulverston. Horned lambs looking well sold selling to £130 for Rough Fells from JH Barker & Son, Ulverston with the Hodgsons of Hartsop Hall topping the Swaledale’s at £116 and a further pen of 55 selling at £107. Other long-term hill bred lambs selling £80-£100 with only the real projects for less.

A nice show of calves forward for the last sale of the month, with several consignments of weaned calves forward. Rearing calves started the day with strongest Charolais cross from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel selling to £800 with this price later matched by D&M Foster selling Limonin cross. British Blue cross achieved £790 from Wallbank Farms Ltd. Younger bulls to £760 for British Blue cross from AD&RL Miller and £740 for Inra 95 from JM&MH France & Son. Native sired bulls to £710 for Aberdeen Angus from T&CM Kelsall & Sons. Dairy bulls to £480 for Fleckvieh JR Newsham & Son who also sold Black and Whites at £430.
Heifer calves sold to £630 for Limousin cross from D&M Foster, with British Blue cross £620 from JP&C Robson. Native sired heifers to £560 for Aberdeen Angus cross from Wallbank Farms Ltd and others £530 from JP&C Robson.
Weaned bulls sold to £1020 for British Blue cross from TD&A Gardner, with other four month old £900 from W Pinder. Aberdeen Angus cross (5 months old) £870 from H Kent with dairy bulls £800 from JR Newsham & Son. STORE CATTLE
Plenty of interest ringside today with buyers keen to keep the fattening pens full. Top today was a pair of Limousin cross steers at £2580 and a pair of Charolais cross all from DE&SM Moorhouse. Closely followed by KH&D Holden & Son selling Aberdeen Angus at £2550. Stronger end steers generally were £2250 to £2500, with medium keep £1900 to £2150.
Heifers peaked at £2320 for a pair of Limousin cross shown by K Capstick, Ingleton with a ring full of Charolais cross £2280 from WA Hodgson. Stronger end of the heifers £2000 to £2250, with medium keep £1750 to £1950.
STIRKS
Today’s sale concluded with the monthly sale of stirks which saw all classes and types sell to an extremely buoyant trade. A ring full of 10 month old Aberdeen Angus steers from JW Thwaites sold to £1520 with a pen of Montbeliarde (13 months) selling at £1450 from D&N Davies. Other younger Aberdeen Angus cross steers from G&D Ball & Son sold at £1350 as did a ring full from C Hargreaves & Son. Heifer stirks sold to £1420 for Aberdeen Angus cross from JE&J Pye & Son with others £1300 from D&N Davies. Native heifers generally £1150 to £1300.

More needed in the bottom ring each week to fulfil buyers requirements, all classes and types eagerly bid for with a market average of 270p/kg.
Beef cows sold to 339.5p/kg and £2529 for Aberdeen Angus cross from GR&A Foy, with Limousin cross selling to 324.5p/kg from RHM&S Boyren and £2322 from H Morgan.
Dairy cows to 279.5p/kg from EW&RM Towers and £2138 from H Halhead & Son. Other parlour types were generally 240p/kg to 255p/kg, with the leaner end 170p/kg to 200p/kg.
OTM beef heifers sold to 374.5p/kg and £2172 for Hereford cross with dairy heifers to 324.5p/kg and £2108.
OTM steers topped at 374.5p/kg for a Limousin cross and £2401 for Aberdeen Angus cross.
Several cull stock bulls forward selling to 269.5p/k and £2700.
